  1. >”Anonymous, are you ready?”
  2. >You look up from your book towards the voice’s direction to see Twilight looking back at you with a grin of eager anticipation.
  3. >As you realise she’s waiting on you, you place a bookmark in between your current pages and stand up, placing the book back on the table with the rest of the dusty books and scrolls you’re too lazy to put back.
  4. “Yeah, sure. Which one is this again?”
  5. >Your tone isn’t the most confident; it never is when you’re about to undergo an experiment as the test subject.
  6. >You look around the library, all the information here is just waiting for you to learn what lies between its pages.
  7. >Twilight was granted special permissions to come study at the Canterlot Libraries with a friend and since your arrival in this land, you and Twilight have become close friends. So she invited you.
  8. >Also because you’re the only one who was interested in spending a week learning.
  9. >The relationship between the two of you has always been that way; she wanted to learn everything about your world and you wanted to learn everything about hers.
  10. >Your reasons were very different, though; She loved learning new things and you just wanted to learn about magic. That was enough of a reason to gain your attention.
  11. >After learning about how your main interest was magic, she began inviting you to see her experiments. Then one day, you started helping her with them.
  12. >That about sums up the past behind your current situation.
  13. >”We went through this yesterday,” her frustrated tone is clear as day. “I want to try one of Starswirl the Bearded’s unfinished spells that I’ve been studying for the past month. This one—”
  14. “Are you sure? His spells can be pretty advanced. If he never finished it, what makes you think you can?”
  15. >You’re confident in her ability that she can do it but you hide that well; you don’t want her getting too sure of herself.
  16. >”I’ve completed a few of his spells before and I’m quite confident I can finish this one. He’s started thousands of experiments that he’s never gotten around to finishing, he’d always find something new to do and as a result, many things were left unfinished.”
  17. >Twilight rarely gets so passionate about something to this degree. She’s always happy to learn and teach but this kind of thing is where her true passion lies, and it shows in her attitude and tone.
  18. >You don’t want to demoralise her, though; you’re also a little excited about this. Last time the two of you did this, you got to fly.
  19. >The feeling of the wind enveloping you as the adrenaline coursed through your veins gave you such a rush.
  20. “What does this one do, then?”
  21. >You give a little yawn and rub your eyes in hopes of waking yourself up a little as you’ve been absorbed in the book you’ve been reading for too long and it’s worn you out.
  22. >”It should allow us to view the past.”
  23. “View, not time travel?”
  24. >”No, time travel is only achievable per pony once and it doesn’t last long. I only managed a few minutes when I tried.”
  25. “Wait, you’ve time traveled? What did go back to change?”
  26. >”Nothing.”
  27. >Her response is short and quick, she’s clearly avoiding the subject, but it’s only made you more curious on the matter.
  28. “What was the point of—”
  29. >”I’ll tell you some other time,” she blurts, looking away with a slight blush that you hardly notice. You still decide to let it go for her sake. “Anyway, have you brushed up on Equestria’s history before it’s founding?”
  30. ”Yeah, is that where you’re sending me?”
  31. >”I’m not sending you anywhere, you’ll still be in the room. It’s your eyes that will be elsewhere.”
  32. “My eyes will still be in my head though, right?”
  33. >”Of course, there should be no side-effects and you’ll wake up, good as new, in about an hour.”
  34. >That ‘should’ doesn’t put you at ease, but you have no doubts in Twilight’s abilities, it’s just that you’re about to be the practice subject for an untested spell. Naturally, you’re a little nervous.
  35. >”Are you sure you want to do this?”
  36. >She asks that every time and you hate it, it only makes you second guess everything.
  37. “Yeah, just,” you hesitate, unsure of what to say when your eyes drift over to your lunch, “if I explode then I want you to have my sandwich. I’ve only taken one bite.”
  38. >She just shakes her head with a small hint of laughter. She’s probably hiding it so as to not encourage you.
  39. >”Any more questions, then?”
  40. “Nope, let’s do this.”
  41. >She walks about two metres away from you and spins on the spot to face you.
  42. >You both take a deep breath before Twilight lowers her head and closes her eyes.
  43. >As you watch her concentration build, her horn begins to produce a warm glow and a light buzzing sound.
  44. >Your eyes remain fixed on her as the light and the sound grow.
  45. >The wind around Twilight picks up; her mane flows in a breeze that’s appearing from almost nowhere, the pages of open books flutter back and forth as the spell nears its full charge.
  46. >It takes roughly a minute before the spell is fully primed.
  47. >As she casts the spell on you, you flinch. You can’t help it when a bright purple flash of light is speeding towards your face.
  48. >The spell makes direct contact with your forehead and a warm, dizzy sensation takes over your senses.
  49. >It feels like you’re being put to sleep as your legs wobble underneath your weight.
  50. >You lack the energy and control to brace yourself for the coming fall but luckily Twilight had placed a fluffy mattress behind you.
  51. ”She’s always thinking ahead, that pony,” is your last thought before your eyes shut completely and your head hits the mattress.
  52.
  53. -Twilight’s POV-
  54. >You’re exhausted from that spell and you feel the need to doze off but you need to watch over Anonymous.
  55. >The spell’s effects only last a hour, but if something goes wrong then you’ll need to be awake as a precaution. He should be safe; you spent most of the last month on this just making sure he would be.
  56. >You look over to Anon’s sandwich. He didn’t explode, but you’re awfully hungry.
  57. “I’ll treat you to dinner when you wake up,” you say to the unconscious human.
  58. >As you take a bite, you sit up on a chair beside him and watch over his unconscious state.
  59. >He looks so peaceful right now.
  60. >You bring over a book to read with your magic as Anon begins to fade away. You do a double-take as you realise what’s actually happening.
  61. >He’s fading.
  62. >You panic and try grabbing onto him but your forehooves pass right through his new ethereal form.
  63. >Your panicked state only worsens as he fades into nothing, and you scream out his name in hopes that he won’t leave you.
  64. >But it’s too late. You’re standing over the mattress where he was once laying with tears welling up in your eyes.
  65. “What have I done? Anonymous, come back… Please!”
  66. >You fall to the mattress in a state of confusion, you have no idea what happened or how to fix this.
  67. >You lay there in shock and disbelief.
  68. >What have you done?
  69.
  70. -Anon’s POV-
  71. >A small breeze gushes past you, the cold wind on your cheek causing you to stir.
  72. >Your eyes flutter open and give you a wide view of a big, bright sky.
  73. “Was I outside before?”
  74. >Your speech is a little slurred as you try to wake yourself up like usual by rubbing your eyes.
  75. >You can feel the soft grass underneath you as you stretch and as you look around, you see various flowers and critters scurrying about the field.
  76. >As you sit up, you start to feel light-headed, so you clutch your head in your hands and sit perfectly still. You sat up too fast.
  77. >After a short while, the feeling fades and the memories of what happened return.
  78. >You were in the Canterlot Library when you… You look up once again and take in the sight of this land, you sit in awe of the sight before you.
  79. >This is Canterlot before the founding of Equestria.
  80. >It looks deserted.
  81. >You’re sitting in a field with a few trees that randomly dot the land.
  82. >You’re so used to seeing this place with tall, stone buildings, ponies always too busy to stop and wave and always a loud commotion of chatter that it’s weird to see all the fauna and wildlife thriving.
  83. >You imagine Fluttershy would adore seeing the land like this, untouched of any civilised life.
  84. >You rise to your feet and make your way to the tallest tree, eager to find a pony settlement you can observe.
  85. >You stand before the towering tree as you ask yourself;
  86. “If you can only ‘view’ the world, will I even be able to climb this?”
  87. >To answer your question, you reach out and touch the coarse bark of tree. Knowing you can interact, you grab onto a branch that’s hanging above your head.
  88. >You then pull yourself up using the branch and begin your careful climb up to a clearing near the top of the tree.
  89. >As you look out, you see mountains, hills, forests and more open fields. No kinds of settlements anywhere.
  90. >You’re not exactly sure what to do now so you begin to make your descent. As you turn you see a nearby camp.
  91. >You make note of the direction and quickly climb down.
  92. >With a soft ‘thud’, your feet make contact with the ground and you waste no time in setting off in the direction of the camp.
  93. >It takes a long time before the camp comes into sight and when it does your feet are exhausted, almost screaming out for a break and even the sun has already began its descent from the sky.
  94. >You pause and look back up at the sky. The warm orange glow of its rays are cast down on your face as you try to remember how high it was when you first woke up here.
  95. “It couldn’t have been an hour already, hasn’t it?”
  96. >You just shake your head, placing your trust in Twilight’s estimate, before moving up to the camp.
  97. >As you move closer, you notice three pegasi, two are taking a break as one tries lighting a fire. You haven’t really dealt with any race aside from ponies, so you’re relieved that they’re the first race you meet.
  98. >They notice you making an approach and they all jolts upright, instantly on high alert.
  99. >”HALT! Who goes there?”
  100. “My names A-Anon.”
  101. >You’re greeted with a gruff and aggressive voice, which clearly belongs to their commander. She’s a blue pony with a rainbow tail and clad in a black armor plating. She reminds you of Rainbow Dash as she stands there, glaring at you, in a defensive stance.
  102. >As you step closer for them to see you, their jaws drop in both awe and horror.
  103. >You haven’t seen those looks since you first arrived in Equestria.
  104. “Wait.” You think back for a moment and realise, “You can see me?”
  105. >”Of course I can see you, or are you supposed to be some uptight Unicorn practicing their hocus-pocus?”
  106. >You’re a little worried about Twilight’s prediction being wrong but at the same time, this is time travel. Remembering what Twilight said about it only working once, you hope that you’ll get more than an hour to explore everything.
  107. “No, I’m a mermaid,” you retort with a level of sarcasm you didn’t know you had.
  108. >”I thought mermaids had tails?”
  109. >A shy nervous pony was the one to speak up this time. She reminds you of Fluttershy in every way except she’s much more cowardly.
  110. >She’s trembling like crazy in fear; you remember Fluttershy being the only pony who wasn’t immediately scared of you but that was probably because she confused you with a wild ape.
  111. >You’re still a little offended by that.
  112. >The last pony is a stallion who’s still trying his hardest to light that fire, not paying any attention to you. He has a black coat, a grey mane and you’re paying as much attention to him as he is to you. He’s just some background guy.
  113. “I was being sarcastic.”
  114. >”What’s sarcasm?”
  115. >You’re not sure if that was sarcasm or if she really doesn’t know. You just sigh at her.
  116. “It was a kind of joke. Anyway, I’m actually a human. Not like in the-”
  117. >”Like the myths?” Her faces lights up and her voice is changed to a happy and cheerful one. “If that’s true then I could use a creature like you in my army, we could show those Earth ponies and uni-”
  118. >”No, not like in the myths. Those are all exaggerated. I don’t fly, I don’t take souls, and I definitely don’t have any magic powder to turn you into stone.”
  119. >The commander looks pretty disappointed at you but you pay no attention to it but instead to the background pony who still can’t seem to light that fire.
  120. “You’re hopeless. Here.”
  121. >You step forward and take the flint and knife away from him.
  122. >”Hey, I was about to light it.”
  123. “Yeah, and I’m Princess Luna.”
  124. >”Who?”
  125. “Never mind!”
  126. >You need to be careful about any references to your time; you don’t want to give them any information they shouldn’t have.
  127. >As you begin to work on the fire, you think about your situation.
  128. >You’re clearly time travelling now, merely watching it. Any feeling of concern is overwhelmed with a feeling of excitement. You should probably make a trip to a nearby settlement.
  129. >There isn’t much you can do about your situation but you would love to know how long you’ll be staying in this time.
  130. >It takes a few strikes, but thanks to all those times you went camping with your friends, you’ve gotten pretty good.
  131. ”Maybe I should assume I’m never going back, like a worst case scenario,” you think to yourself as a few sparks fly and light the tinder.
  132. >You get down on all fours and blow a steady stream of air to feed it oxygen until it begins to light the kindling.
  133. >Confident the fire can light the rest itself, you stand up and dust yourself off before turning to face the commander.
  134. >”Humans aren’t real but the more I look at you, the more I think you that have to be one. You don’t look like anything else but you’re a myth?”
  135. >She keeps looking you over, trying to study every part of you to try and discover what you are exactly despite you already telling her.
  136. >”I-It’s possible… he’s a subspecies, Commander. Like an ape.”
  137. >Hearing her say that does annoy you a little.
  138. >”Excellent point, Private.”
  139. “Look, I’m a real human. A homosapien.”
  140. >”Your sexual preference has nothing to do with this.”
  141. >Wait, she doesn’t think...
  142. >Before you can question it, she starts a spiel about the ‘might of the pegasus race’.
  143. >She introduces herself as ‘Commander Hurricane’ and the other mare as ‘Private Pansy’. She also introduces the stallion but you weren’t listening at that point because this mare can talk more than Twilight. It’s a little agonising to have to sit through this.
  144. >”So, Anon.” Hearing your voice snaps you to attention. “What are you doing here?”
  145. >You couldn’t think of a great backup story straight away, so instead you say the first idea you think of.
  146. “Research.”
  147. >”Researching what?”
  148. “Uh, everything. The land, animals, plants, but mainly the three tribes. You guys are the first sentient life I’ve met so far on my trip.”
  149. >Commander Hurricane puffs out her chest in pride.
  150. >”Luckily for you, you’ve already met the superior of the three.”
  151. >You’re curious if Dash is related to the Commander. They look so alike and their heads are big enough to have some kind of relation.
  152. “Which is the nearest settlement and how far?”
  153. >”That would be the unicorn territory… They’re about a night’s walk west.”
  154. >You’re willing to bet that the spell won’t last that long. It’s definitely been an hour already, but you decide to carry on here as if you’re stuck. It’ll be a good idea to go there anyway.
  155. >Twilight probably made some miscalculation, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from exploring.
  156. “Which way is west?”
  157. >”Don’t you know anything about astrology? The sun always sets in the west.”
  158. >Commander Hurricane gives you a look like you’re an idiot as she points off to the sunset.
  159. “Right, thanks.”
  160. >You stand up to face the sun. As you take in its warm glow, you begin to set off for the unicorn’s home.
  161. >”You’re actually going to see them?”
  162. >You spin and face the Commander who still has that same look as before. She just can’t understand why you’d want to visit them.
  163. “Well yeah. I said I was doing research, didn’t I?”
  164. >”Where’s your equipment, then?”
  165. >You then realise that having no equipment doesn’t credit your story of being here for research. You put on your best poker face and lie through your teeth.
  166. ”I was attacked by a… a bear recently and I had to ditch my bag.”
  167. >You’re not sure if bears are even in this area but the look on the Private’s face proves that either there must be or she has no idea like you do.
  168. >”Oh my, are you alright?” Private Pansy asks with a quiver in her voice.
  169. “Yeah, I’m fine. I got away safely but I lost all my notes. So I was hoping a nearby settlement would be generous enough to help me out with supplies.”
  170. >The Commander gives you a look of fury as she storms into her tent. Private Pansy just gives you a uneasy smile.
  171. >Neither of you are sure what the Commander is going to do, but you don’t need to wait long for an answer.
  172. >She comes back out of her tent with a small messenger bag in her mouth that she passes to you.
  173. >You catch it and open it up to see a few small books, quills and inks, and half a loaf of bread.
  174. >You look back at her in confusion.
  175. >”Those stuffy unicorns would never help out somepony who isn’t one of their own.”
  176. “And why are you?”
  177. >”Because you’re going to enlist in the pegasus army, and I want a full report of your findings before you head home. Don’t leave out any details about the enemy, understood?”
  178. >You just nod. The supplies could come in handy and you doubt you’ll run into these three again anyway.
  179. “Thank you, Commander.”
  180. >You give her a salute that she returns before you head off towards the unicorn’s home.
  181.
  182. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  183. Honestly, I did have a lot of plans for this but I couldn't make the build up to it all interesting enough and as a result, never finished part 2.
  184. If someone likes the idea, feel free to take it.
  185. Contact me on Skype (Prefered) or in thread if you want to know what plans I had for the story.
