  2. Sword of Mana (Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu)
  3.
  4. Platform: GBA
  5. Released (d.m.y):
  6. 29.08.2003 (Japan)
  7. 01.12.2003 (North America)
  8. 19.03.2004 (Europe)
  9.
  10. Based on: European version (AGB-AVSP-EUR)
  11.
  12.
  13.
  14. - I recommend playing GBA games on a DS Lite or a GameCube (using the
  15. Game Boy Player), although both options have their pros and cons.
  16. × Handheld consoles are an ergonomic nightmare and should probably
  17. never be used. However, if you already have joint issues, I suppose
  18. it doesn't really matter anymore. I myself use a smaller pillow to
  19. support my back and a stiff, larger pillow to support my arms, so I
  20. don't have to tilt my head forward.
  21. × With the Game Boy Player, you don't have to worry about fu*king up
  22. your body (at least not as much as with a handheld). However, using it
  23. produces a little input lag which, in extreme cases, can render the
  24. game essentially unplayable (eg. Puzzle League). You'll also need to
  25. use something other than a GameCube controller. I use a Hori Game Boy
  26. Player controller, but those are not cheap. You can also try to find
  27. an adapter that lets you use a DualShock on the GameCube.
  28. × In the case of Sword of Mana, the input lag isn't all that big of
  29. a deal. The main issue is with the combo timing, but you can easily
  30. learn to compensate.
  31.
  32. - This guide covers the game from the female main character's perspective.
  33. The game is largely the same regardless of which one you choose. Each
  34. character gets one exclusive dungeon, one exclusive weapon type, different
  35. allies, and they wear different types of armor.
  36. - Check the character guide and choose the class you're going to aim for.
  37. Make sure you understand how the system works.
  38. - Weapons and magic gain SP with each hit. The amount equals Exp/5 for
  39. weapons and Exp/3 for magic.
  40. - The game only gives you 2 save slots. If you really get into the game,
  41. you should get a second copy.
  42. - Due to an unaltered text scrolling speed, getting through dialog is
  43. a lot slower in the western releases. If you get into speedrunning the
  44. game, you should get the Japanese version.

  74. |
  75. [Name: Boy]
  76. |
  77. [Dlg002 - 1:01]
  78. - "Do you know how to use Spirits?" -> 'Yes'
  79. - "You got that?" -> 'Yes'
  80.
  81. \\\ Topple Outskirts ||
  82. Initial stats (Girl): 23 HP, 12 MP, 4 Pow, 3 Def, 3 Int, 3 Mnd, 3 Agi
  83. Default (Girl): Oak Staff, Oak Hat, Oak Robe, Oak Gloves, Oak Sandals
  84. - You'll start off at Level 1 with presumably 0 xp. You can't see your
  85. total amount of Experience for some reason nor can you see the exact
  86. progress of your magic levels or weapon skill levels.
  87. - Your only weapon at this time is the Oak Staff, which deals blunt
  88. damage. This is one of the 5 weapons capable of performing a 3-hit combo
  89. by pressing A during the final frames of the first and second attacks.
  90. The second attack deals 150% damage and the third 200%. Sounds pretty
  91. good on paper, but unfortunately, the hit detection is not very cooperative.
  92. - In case of the staff, you'll notice that the second hit has a habit of
  93. not registering, giving your opponent a good opportunity to bite you in
  94. the face. This is unfortunate but should not discourage you from using
  95. combos. Instead, you should try and position your character so that the
  96. first hit will miss. If that doesn't seem to work either, you can just
  97. settle for spamming the first hit.
  98. × Physical attacks are divided into three categories: slashing, piercing
  99. ("Jab"), and blunt ("Bash").
  100. × Critical hits deal double damage.
  101. × Attacking targets with weapons will build up your, er, "limit gauge"
  102. or whatever you want to call it. In any case, the gauge requires 30
  103. points to be full. At first, you'll gain 1 point with each hit, but
  104. this increases by 1 with every 10 skill levels. Either way, once the
  105. gauge is full, hold down the A button and release it to execute a
  106. special attack that has increased range and deals double damage. The
  107. gauge will not reset unless you actually hit something.
  108. - You also start off with the elemental spirit of light, Wisp (aka Lumina).
  109. Once "equipped," each spirit grants you the ability to cast two spells
  110. with the R button: a support spell (in Wisp's case, Healing Light, one
  111. of the most important assets you'll find in the entire game) and an
  112. offensive spell. You can trigger the support spell by quickly tapping
  113. R, whereas casting the offensive spell requires you to hold R for a
  114. little while. The offensive spell's behavior changes depending on the
  115. weapon you have equipped. In case of the Staff, the "magic missile" will
  116. automatically seek targets, so you don't really have to worry about
  117. positioning (unlike with most other weapons).
  118. - You can *only* level up your magic by hitting enemies with the offensive
  119. spell. The best way to level up your magic is by casting it on bosses.
  120. You should probably never try leveling it up by casting it on normal
  121. enemies (unless you're really desperate).
  122. × Healing Light heals an amount of HP equal to 30 + (Wisp level). Certain
  123. Fighter and Monk classes and all Sage classes grant an additional bonus
  124. to this spell.
  125. × You can slowly recover your MP (5% every 2 seconds) with the "Sitting"
  126. / crouching ability by holding A + L. Note that you can do this even in
  127. an area with no enemies.
  128. - You'll also find the Mana Pendant (Unique, Temp) key item lying around
  129. somewhere in your inventory.
  130. - Don't forget that you can quickly close the ring menu by pressing Start.
  131. If you're in one of the sub-menus, it's always faster than hitting B.
  132. - The game offers no interface customization whatsoever; you can't change
  133. the button settings, increase the text scrolling speed, turn off the text
  134. scrolling sound, or anything along those lines.
  135. - Once an area has been cleared of enemies, it takes approximately 8
  136. seconds for another set to spawn. If an item is dropped, the counter
  137. starts after getting hit by the trap or when the chest disappears should
  138. you leave it untouched (despawns after about 5 seconds). If there is no
  139. trap, the counter starts the moment you examine the chest.
  140. - Throughout the game, you'll occasionally find yourself in situations
  141. where it's easier to backtrack by switching to your other character.
  142.
  143. Item: Gumdrop \\\ Topple ||
  144. Item (nc): Barbecued Newt (Unique, Temp)
  145. Special: Popoi's Notebook
  146.
  147. [Dlg003 - 0:25]. This one plays when you try to take the west exit.
  148. - > 'To find my mother' + 'Yes'
  149. - If you don't have 10 Lucre, Niccolo will simply take all you have.
  150.
  151. - Talk to Luke at the General Store to start a fairly easy, yet lengthy
  152. side quest. All you need to do is talk to some specific NPCs in every town.
  153. - At night, you can find Blassie the Third staying at the inn. He'll
  154. offer to buy any Blood Pouches (dropped by Batmos) you may find for 100
  155. Lucre each.
  156. - The store has a set of accessories on sale that boost one of your stats
  157. by 5 points (100 Luc).
  158. - Talk to the boy in the southeast building and agree to locate his book
  159. for him (required for the next event).
  160.
  161. Item (nc): Wood Geode (Unique, Temp) \\\ Topple Armory ||
  162. - The 8 hidden Geodes are almost impossible to detect. You don't actually
  163. have to examine them, though; you'll pick them up automatically when you
  164. approach them.
  165.
  166. Items: Angel Grail, Gumdrop \\\ Path to Topple ||
  167. Default (Boy): Bronze Sword, Bronze Helm, Bronze Armor, Oak Gloves,
  168. Bronze Boots, Quartz Ring
  169.
  170. [Dlg004 - 0:52]. This one plays when you reach the meadow.
  171. |
  172. [Dlg005 - 0:59] (defeat the Chobin Hood)
  173. |
  174. [PC: + Boy Lv5]
  175.
  176. - You can deal slashing damage with the Boy's Sword (a weapon the Girl
  177. will never be able to use). Just like with the staff, the sword's 3-hit
  178. combo tends to leave you rather vulnerable, with the second hit swinging
  179. the air more often than not. You should mostly rely on the first attack
  180. only or try and position yourself so that the third hit is the only one
  181. that connects (usually powerful enough to kill anything in a single hit
  182. until the late parts of the game).
  183.
  184. [Dlg006 - 0:09]. This one plays when you reach Topple.
  185. |
  186. [PC: - Boy]
  187.
  188. Special: Magic Rope \\\ Topple ||
  189.
  190. [Dlg007 - 0:12]. Return the book to the kid.
  191.
  192. [Dlg008 - 0:26]. Talk to the kid's grandpa and agree to spend the night.
  193.
  194. - You can use the Magic Rope to warp back to the last Goddess Statue
  195. you've saved at. If you haven't saved yet, it'll take you to the Goddess
  196. Statue by the cabin.
  197. - There are many points in the game where a warp point is automatically
  198. set if previous areas are unavailable. There are also a few occasions
  199. during which the Magic Rope can't be used at all.
  200.
  201. - There are two people you need to talk to before you can trigger the
  202. next event at Bogard's cabin:
  203. 1. The old woman in the street (not found during the night)
  204. 2. The guy in the northwest building
  205. - You'll also need to have gotten Popoi's Notebook.
  206.
  207. Special: Jump \\\ Topple Outskirts ||
  208.
  209. [Dlg009 - 1:40]. This one plays when you approach the cottage.
  210. |
  211. [PC: + Boy]
  212.
  213. Item: Gumdrop \\\ Path to Cave ||
  214.
  215. Items: Angel Grail, Gumdrop \\\ Batmo Cave ||
  216. Item (nc): Oak Bow
  217. - Defeat the 4 Chobin Hoods in the fourth area to obtain the Bow, your
  218. first weapon capable of dealing piercing damage. You'll need to use it
  219. in order to get past the Metaball in the next area.
  220. - This is also the first of 4 weapons that have no combo ability. However,
  221. unlike the combo weapons, it can hit multiple enemies with a single attack.
  222.
  223. Items: Gumdrop, Gumdrop \\\ Vinquette Vicinity ||
  224. Item (nc): Cactus Essence (Unique)
  225. - From now on, there's a chance you'll be running into Niccolo in certain
  226. areas. The wares he's carrying include various healing items along with an
  227. accessory called Belle Bell that doubles the amount of Exp you gain from
  228. enemies killed by the character wearing it (affects both characters). This
  229. one comes with a price tag of 10 000 Lucre, though, so it'll take a while
  230. before you can afford it. For now, you should just settle for a few Magic
  231. Walnuts.
  232. - In order to access his special wares (which include numerous materials
  233. and the three accessories listed below), you have to buy something from
  234. him in 251 "sessions." As in, you buy something, exit the shop menu
  235. completely, then do it again.
  236. × FlameFlicker (4000 Lucre): Pow & Int +20
  237. × Cardinal Eye (4000 Lucre): Def & Mnd +20
  238. × Draupnir (8000 Lucre): All +15
  239.
  240. [Dlg010 - 0:15]. Plays when you approach the pot near the save point.
  241.
  242. - Within the hothouse, you can check the Cactus Diary, grow berries and
  243. fruit, and, later on, forge weapons and armor.
  244. - Unlike in LoM, you don't have to talk to Li'l Cactus immediately after
  245. completing a quest in order to get the diary entry. In fact, you don't
  246. have to talk to him at all.
  247.
  248. Item: Cicada Earrings \\\ Path to Scaly Lair ||
  249. Items: Angel Grail, Menos Bronze \\\ Scaly Lair ||
  250.
  251. \\\ Vinquette Vicinity ||
  252. - You can only enter Vinquette Hall at night.
  253.
  254. [Dlg011 - 0:51]. This one plays when you approach Vinquette Hall.
  255.
  256. Items: Angel Grail, Light Coin, Magic Walnut \\\ Vinquette Hall ||
  257. Special: Salamander
  258. Boss: Count Lee
  259.
  260. [Dlg012 - 1:27]. Enter Vinquette Hall.
  261.
  262. [Dlg013 - 0:44]. Enter Isabella's room.
  263.
  264. [Dlg014 - 1:28]. Return to your room.
  265. |
  266. [PC: - Boy]
  267.
  268. [Dlg015 - 0:28]. Leave your room.
  269.
  270. - First off, you need to locate Salamander, so you can get past that
  271. pesky little bug (2 xp, 1 Luc) in the room with the sealed door. Only
  272. Salamander's magic will work.
  273. - This will be your first encounter with enemies who are completely
  274. immune to physical attacks. I suggest you kill a couple of them just
  275. to get the journal entry, but other than that, you shouldn't bother.
  276.
  277. [Dlg016 - 0:19]. Destroy the Metaball in the fireplace.
  278.
  279. [Dlg017 - 0:44]. This one plays when you reach the room with the coffins.
  280. |
  281. [Dlg018 - 0:10] (Defeat the Ivory Butler) (5 xp)
  282.
  283. [Dlg019 - 1:47]. Enter Count Lee's chamber.
  284. |
  285. [PC: + Boy]
  286. |
  287. [Boss]
  288. - 10 Exp, 45 Lucre
  289. - Don't bother trying to level up your magic yet. The earliest bosses
  290. aren't worth enough xp.
  291. |
  292. [Dlg020 - 2:13]
  293.
  294. - Now it's time to head to the Marsh Cave (accessed from Scaly Lair).
  295.
  296. \\\ Marsh Cave ||
  297. Items: Angel Grail, Small Seed, Angel Grail, Oak Wood,
  298. Long Seed, Crooked Seed, Oblong Seed, Gumdrop, Angel Grail
  299. Items (nc): Bronze Flail, Moon Mirror (Unique, Temp)
  300. Boss: Hydra
  301. - You can cut the grass to find 'mystery items' (Blink Weed, Fragrant
  302. Flower, Tone Stone).
  303. - In one of the areas, you'll find a flight of stairs you can only access
  304. with your main character. Once you take this path, you'll fall into an
  305. area with 2 Lizardons and 3 Duck GIs. Defeat them to obtain the Flail -
  306. apparently, a very sharp flail, as it deals piercing damage. Either way,
  307. you can use it to pull yourself towards poles and similar objects. It
  308. can't hit multiple targets.
  309.
  310. [Dlg021 - 0:10]. This one plays when you examine the Moon Mirror.
  311. |
  312. [Boss]
  313. - 15 Exp, 52 Lucre

  323. Items: Animal Bone, Gummi Frog, Menos Bronze \\\ Road to Wendel ||
  324. Item: Oak Wood \\\ Wendel Coast ||
  325. - You can only reach the chest at night.
  326.
  327. [Dlg024 - 0:18]. This one plays upon reaching Wendel.
  328.
  329. Item: Oblong Seed, \\\ Wendel ||
  330. Items (nc): Bronze Sickle, 15× Leaflets (Artifact, Temp),
  331. Silver Knife (Unique, Temp)
  332. - There are two side-quests here that are only available at this point
  333. in the game (and one of them triggers two follow-up quests that also
  334. have limited time windows). You have to complete them before triggering
  335. the scene at the cathedral.
  336.
  337. [Dlg025 - 0:55]. This one plays on the north side.
  338.
  339. [Dlg026 - 0:34]. Enter the blacksmith's.
  340.
  341. - Talk to Dohmi at the General Store to receive a quest where you have
  342. to hand out 15 leaflets to various people across town. The main problem
  343. is that some of these NPCs are only found during a certain time of the
  344. day. Other than that, there's nothing to it. The time window is not limited.

  357.
  358. - Phase 2 in the quest to find Luke's father: talk to Sasha in one of
  359. the buildings, then Navali at the blacksmith's.
  360. - Talk to Vega at the inn and agree to find a Glittering Sword for him.
  361. These are dropped by Pincher Crabs. Complete this quest *now* or you'll
  362. not only fail the quest but also lose the opportunity to do the two
  363. follow-up quests later.
  364. - Talk to Umberto at the inn and take up the job (this one's not available
  365. later either). Then go to one of the buildings at night to trigger a
  366. scene with the Guy Who Won't Work. Go talk to Umberto again (he's only
  367. there during the day) and reply 'yes.' Simply return to the building to
  368. finish the quest.
  369. - Talk to Emerilie at the inn and agree to find the kitchen knife. Go
  370. talk to one of the dwarves at the blacksmith's to hear about Dofar. Go
  371. talk to Dofar at the inn to get the knife.
  372.
  373. [Dlg027 - 0:17]. Talk to Lester.
  374.
  375. [Dlg028 - 0:20]. Talk to Devius at the inn.

  397. - You will no longer have access to this dungeon once you complete the
  398. events here.

  408. [Dlg034 - 7:19]. Examine the closet.
  409. |
  410. [PC: + Bogard Lv27]
  411.
  412. - You can break the windows in some of the rooms, allowing you to reach
  413. the exterior of the ship.
  414. - On one of the floors, you'll find a soldier and two werewolves. Kill
  415. them to obtain the Knuckles. When you have this weapon equipped, you can
  416. actually control the magic missile. This is optimal for leveling up
  417. magic, as it allows you to get two hits in with a single spell - sometimes
  418. more.
  419. - In order to obtain the key to the Control Room, you have to kill every
  420. group of soldiers found throughout the ship.
  421.
  422. [Dlg035 - 0:12]. This one plays when you enter the reactor room.
  423. |
  424. [Boss]

  437. [Dlg037 - 2:23]. This one plays upon reaching Menos.
  438.
  439. Items: Crooked Seed, Menos Bronze \\\ Menos ||
  440. - You can't reach the two chests during the same time of the day.

  467. the materials you have now, though.
  468. - I suggest you get the Belle Bell now. You should have at least 5k
  469. at this point, so it won't take long. After that, you should unlock
  470. Niccolo's special wares (seen above), so you can start making gear

  663. other than hunt down items and get assraped by the Skull Drakes.

  766. - You'll need to examine all the loose rocks in order to proceed (only
  767. works with your main character).
  768. - Don't forget to switch characters to make progressing easier (as in,
  769. for instance, after getting knocked down by a stream of water).
  770. - Chibify yourself with the Tiny Tapper to enter the "hidden area"
  771. through one of the little holes (the ones that had water in them will
  772. take you nowhere, though). From here, it's possible to get to the area
  773. with the Brownie Ring. However, in order to reach it, you'll need to
  774. unchibify yourself while you're still "inside the wall" (as in, you
  775. can't see your character). You're in the right spot when you can see
  776. one of the holes (the one that had 3 chests nearby) in the lower left
  777. corner of the screen. Once you're back to normal size, you need to jump
  778. over an obstacle towards the north. That's it.

  794. to hang out with.
  795. - The Fire Geode is in the lava just a little west of the chest with
  796. the Angel Grail. This is one of the first areas (ie. the one with a few
  797. chests up on the cliffs that you can only reach by circling around from
  798. the west). Immediately north of this area is an area with several Metaballs.
