1. Tater “Tate” Mcgucket is a man of few words who rarely discusses his feelings or interests, because of his nature and circumstance. He’s seen outright reading a magazine called “Stoic Monthly” in Legend of the Gobblewonker and pulling the shades in order to ignore his father. He is rarely shown talking to the other townspeople, though he is shown attending most social functions in the town, including at the Wax Museum opening and Frontier day. He doesn’t speak about the monsters and unusual occurrences of Gravity Falls, and seems unperturbed by them on the outside, despite clearly knowing about the horrifying head in the lake. He also doesn’t discuss his feelings with his father or anyone else. He’s not an actively secretive person, just one who is not outgoing.

3. Tate McGucket also appears to be a very solitary person in addition to a very quiet one. He appears to live alone, work alone, and isn’t married. He tends to avoid eye contact, as shown by his wearing his hat very low and not typically socializing. If he doesn’t want to speak to someone, he will push them away very quickly- as seen with his father and rushing the kids away when they tried to interview him. It’s not until the end of the series that he’s seen actively spending time with anyone else, and even then he’s quietly fishing in the same pool his father swims in, along with his raccoon stepmother. He also keeps things that could make him the center of attention to himself, like knowing every year’s winning lottery numbers and avoiding his well-known town-kook father in public, and eventually in private.

5. Tate may be very stoic, but he is very quick to snap when angry or frustrated. He doesn’t want to have anything to do with his father behaving strangely in public, quick to punish and drive him away for it. He is also quick to yell at Mabel and Dipper for asking more about the tooth than he was willing to answer, telling them to remove the camera and get out of his store. This likely ties into his natural cautiousness and desire to be left alone, avoiding the public eye after his father’s breakdown and not wanting to be involved with the strangeness of Gravity Falls.

7. Tate is shown to be very harsh towards the people who push his buttons, with little patience for his father or people who ask things he doesn’t want to answer. He’s very harsh when McGucket comes about yelling at and harassing his customers at the lakeside, using a spray bottle on him like a misbehaving cat in “Legend of the Gobblewonker”. He was also quick to yell at Mabel and Dipper when they were asking about the bubbles on the lake in “Tooth” and wanted them to put away the camera and leave, even trying to cover the lense. He shows no interest in caring for his father at this point in his life and leaves him to his own to live in a dump with a raccoon wife, and when his father was exposed in the newspaper he denied interviews or to have anything to do with him publicly.

9. While he is very stoic and not particularly emotional, Tate does seem to be a relatively dutiful person. He seems to keep an eye on or at least pay attention to his father at the public functions they both attend, and it is implied he is in Gravity Falls because of his father. He and his mother were in Gravity falls for at least a short time as he was a preteen, there for Fiddleford’s research and subsequent breakdown, followed by their divorce. He would have still been young when this happened and his mother left Gravity Falls, so he likely returned as a young adult when Fiddleford finally lost his mind proper and needed someone to care for him. While their relationship is distant and strained by the time the show starts, he does show concern for his father’s behavior and a willingness to put up with McGucket when his behavior doesn’t cause a public spectacle, visiting him in private at least a few times before Legend of the Gobblewonker, when these visits stopped.

11. Despite his quiet and generally reserved nature, we have found out that Tate is extremely smart, possibly even brighter than his own father. He scored so highly on the SATs in high school that the grading machine exploded. This isn’t terribly surprising, considering he was raised in an environment with his genius father and a presumably very smart mother. His skills don’t stop there though, and he has a wide berth of knowledge. It’s stated that he predicts the winning lottery numbers every year and keeps it to himself, as well as being able to predict upcoming weather patterns.
12. Tate may not be solitary only by nature, as seen in his appearances. He knows how to avoid the terrors of Gravity falls by keeping his nose out of it, as shown in his warning to the kids about the bubbles on the lake and his general attitude. His father went through something traumatic and ended up losing his mind after being deeply involved in mystery and secrets, so he keeps his nose out of it. A solitary, cautious lifestyle is his best bet for a normal life, and it seems to be what he wants from Gravity Falls.

16. The only thing Tate seems to really care for is outdoorsmanship at the lake, as he is seen fishing and owns a bait shop at the lakeside. Tate is only seen dressed in uptight, outdoor- friendly clothing and a ball cap. In the finale he is shown fishing and has multiple mounted fish as trophies in his shop and home. He’s also very familiar with the goings on of Gravity Fall’s unusual natural setting, being aware of the giant floating head in the lake and how to avoid it. He is also shown to be relatively comfortable with, or at least unbothered by, the wild raccoon living in the mansion with him and his father.
