The present paper introduces a joint coordinate and routing system (CORONA) which can be deployed dynamically on a 2D ad-hoc nanonetwork. User-selected nodes are used as anchor-points at the setup phase. All nodes then measure their distances, in number of hops, from these anchors, obtaining a sense of geolocation. At operation phase, the routing employs the appropriate subset of anchors, selected by the sender of a packet. CORONA requires minimal setup overhead and simple integer-based calculations only, imposing limited requirements for trustworthy operation. Once deployed, it operates efficiently, yielding a very low packet retransmission and packet loss rate, promoting energy-efficiency and medium multiplexity.

They worked to create a microbial network they could "plug into" an external electronic system to interrogate and control biological function in real time. The collaborative team crafted an electronic system and a community of engineered microbial cells to create an electronically controlled biological local area network, dubbed a BioLAN.
They developed a bioelectronic communication system that is enabled by a redox signal transduction modality to exchange information between a living cell-embedded bioelectronics interface and an engineered microbial network.
A naturally communicating three-member microbial network is ‘plugged into’ an external electronic system that interrogates and controls biological function in real time.
First, electrode-generated redox molecules are programmed to activate gene expression in an engineered population of electrode-attached bacterial cells, effectively creating a living transducer electrode.
In the computer realm, a LAN consists of a collection of devices connected together in a physical location. In a similar way, the team’s BioLAN employs a network of engineered cells to convert information delivered via an electronic input into a biological response. In turn, that biological response conveys information across a microbial network in order to carry out network functions.
One such function is verification that the electronic signal was successfully translated to carry out a biological response. To make this verification possible, the team created a terminal electronic output that confirms that the original “message” was delivered to the appropriate target, similar to how a “read receipt” functions for email.
In addition, the BioLAN carries out a second critical function that involves initiating production and delivery of a therapeutic.

GLADIATOR envisions to establish a radical long-term vision leading to a drastic change in cancer monitoring and therapy. In this project the role of our team at TSSG is to develop an end to end molecular communication system for inter-cellular communication among brain cells. Molecular Communications is the emerging discipline of exploring the transmission of encoded messages via molecular channels in solutions, cells or entire living organisms. Such systems can even form networks of bio-nano-machines which, when externally controlled, can be interrogated to extract information on the status of the cancer. It is expected that the project’s results will substantially improve patient prognosis and prolong survival by minimizing recurrences and reducing drug toxicity. In this seminar we will briefly present the current activities in this project.

(d)Prior notice to Congress
Not later than 30 days after the date of final approval within the Department of Defense of plans for any experiment or study to be conducted by the Department of Defense (whether directly or under contract) involving the use of human subjects for the testing of a chemical agent or a biological agent, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the Committee on Armed Services of the Senate and the Committee on Armed Services of the House of Representatives a report setting forth a full accounting of those plans, and the experiment or study may then be conducted only after the end of the 30-day period beginning on the date such report is received by those committees.
(e)“Biological agent” defined
In this section, the term “biological agent” means any micro-organism (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, rickettsiac, or protozoa), pathogen, or infectious substance, and any naturally occurring, bioengineered, or synthesized component of any such micro-organism, pathogen, or infectious substance, whatever its origin or method of production, that is capable of causing—
(1)death, disease, or other biological malfunction in a human, an animal, a plant, or another living organism;
(2)deterioration of food, water, equipment, supplies, or materials of any kind; or
(3)deleterious alteration of the environment.

This article presents fundamental challenges in the development of a self-sustainable and biocompatible network infrastructure to interconnect the next-generation electrical and biological wearable and implantable devices, i.e., the Internet of Bio-NanoThings. The direct contact of IoBNT devices with the human body, where the cells naturally communicate and organize into networks, suggests the possibility to exploit these biological communications for the device-to-device interconnection. The aim of this work is to investigate minimally invasive, heterogeneous, and externally accessible electrical/molecular communication channels to transmit information between these devices through the Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis (MGBA), composed of the gut microbial community, the gut tissues, the enteric nervous system.
The focus of the conceptual framework introduced in this paper will be the Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis (MGBA), where electrical signals propagating through the nervous system are converted to molecular signals that influence the gut microbial communities, and vice versa. The information propagates by means of natural communication links and interfaces, which are present in the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system.
This article discusses the utilization of the MGBA as an IoBNT communication network infrastructure to transmit and receive information generated by and/or directed to electronic and biological devices. 2, where this infrastructure is also envisioned to communicate with the external environment through dedicated molecular (alimentary canal) and electrical (wireless data transfer through skin) interfaces.
The MGBA refers to the bidirectional communication network between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, which in general includes the Central Nervous System (CNS), the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), the Enteric Nervous System (ENS), the gastrointestinal tract, and its microbiome.
