  1. Stablehost new owner cuts off unlimited plans
  2. I have an older Stablehost unlimited domains, unlimited disk, unlimited transfers plan.
  3. Very cheap, and until recently excellent support.

  16.
  17. A few days ago I got a disk full message and contacted support, they said they "Increased PHP limits" to resolve the disk full.
  18. Since this is supposed to be unlimited disk, that should not happen.
  19. It had happened some time ago (before they were bought out) and they just took care of it immediately.
  20.
  21. So ff a couple days and I notice email is not arriving, contacted them again. Apparently increasing PHP limits did not resolve the problem at all.
  22.
  23. This time I was told "You have one of our old plans with a 3GB disk limit" and was offered an upgrade. I pointed out that it is supposed to be unlimited.
  24. I deleted some temp files and an old backup that had been downloaded. Things are working again. I am using about 1.5gb.
  25.
  26. They probably want to get rid of the old cheap accts that Stablehost sold.
  27. I just want to point out that their new owner (Miss Group of Sweden) is cutting things off.
  28. You might want to make plans.
  29.
  30. In case anyone cares.
  31. Does Miss Group of Sweden own any other hosting companies? Not sure that I've heard of them before
  32. They own the following brands -
  33.
  34. Miss Hosting
  35. Miss Domain
  36. NameISP
  37. Hemsida24
  38. 4UKHost
  39. Miss Affiliate
  40. HTTPS.SE
  41. HeyMO
  42. StableHost
  43. So you have an Unlimited plan that they're now telling you is not unlimited - is that right?
  44.
  45. What does it show in the billing system that your plan is?
  46. They have a right to revoke the plan, although its not best practice. Ive always felt as long as I was given notice prior to the removal or change of a plan I was ok with it. because I would be able to move if I am not ok with it.
  47. It still says unlimited.
  48. I was trying to figure out how to post a screenshot. I don't see a way.
  49. A few days ago I got a disk full message and contacted support, they said they "Increased PHP limits" to resolve the disk full.
  50. Since this is supposed to be unlimited disk, that should not happen.
  51. OK first things first: There is no such thing as an unlimited disk. That is literally impossible.
  52.
  53. There must always be resource limits, otherwise your site is a ticking bomb waiting to go off the first time a site without a disk quota runs the partition out of disk space entirely and the entire server implodes as a result.

  65.
  66. So you can use up to $X amount of disk and when you hit the limit your host increases you quota - but there must always be a hard limit. Doing anything less is foolish.
  67.
  68. So - your plan is not "unlimited" - your plan is "I don't pay for increases in disk quota"
  69. I just want to point out that their new owner (Miss Group of Sweden) is cutting things off.
  70. You might want to make plans.
  71.
  72. In case anyone cares.
  73. You have completely misinterpreted events. You should be requesting that your limits be kicked up a notch and you not be billed for that increase because you're on an "unlimited" plan.
  74.
  75. If it were as you described with no resource limits at all then eventually your site would run the entire server out of disk - and then guess what happens?
  76. for THEE in `cat /sys/hell | grep -w heart`; do /bin/stab $THEE ; done
  77. OK first things first: There is no such thing as an unlimited disk. That is literally impossible.
  78. Unlimited != Infinite.
  79.
  80. It's possible for a provider to offer a service without an arbitrary limit on the storage capacity itself but that's really not what this thread is about.
  81.
  82. I would make the argument that 3 GB is arbitrarily low no matter how you slice it.
  83.
  84. My guess is that Miss Group doesn't know how to maintain the service as well as the former owner and is taking the easy way out.
  85.

  88. They bought a plan with no set limit on storage and are now being told the storage limit is really 3 GB. It's situations like this that give unlimited a bad name - sure - but not all providers are garbage.
  89. If it were as you described with no resource limits at all then eventually your site would run the entire server out of disk - and then guess what happens?
  90. At that point personally I'd say they're a terrible provider because they didn't properly manage their infrastructure and service.
  91.
  92. At any rate this really isn't an argument of what unlimited is or isn't. If you purchase a plan with no set limit on storage capacity you expect to be able to use more than 3 GB of storage. The provider being terrible at managing their storage, infrastructure, or service does suck but it doesn't reflect on the client for choosing the plan and trusting the provider.
  93. I don't think they can change your plan without some kind of advance notice, short or otherwise.
  94.
  95. Have you spoken with the billing department? Maybe someone in that department can give you some better insight as to what your currently paying for. They have several numbers available their site.
  96. Heh. They don't talk on the phone.
  97. I talked to one guy on a sales issue once, but that's it.
  98.
  99. I told a client to sign up on one of their cheap hosting plans that they email me about constantly, because the hosting company that his inept web designer chose is just not very good.
  100.
  101. They could *never* sign up for that plan in the email, I was going to help move their sites just to help them out.
  102. But they couldn't sign up. They finally just gave up. It was after the buyout.
  103.
  104. I agree about unlimited, and it's just a matter of semantics. "Unlimited" is often a marketing term. Gee whiz. look at the limited "unlimited" cellphone plans in the US. Like these big companies don't really understand what "unlimited" means.
  105.
  106. Of course it actually means you give me more resources as needed within reason. Everyone understands that. In this case, that is.
  107. Unlimited is not unlimited. There is always limitations and the provider can just point you to TOS. A way out....
  108.
  109. But, if you go with a provider with a correct data space allocation, it can't be changed. If you purchased 100 GB, you get it. If you purchased 5 GB, you get it. No way out. You paid for it.
  110.
  111. Hope you have your own remote backup.
  112. Hope you have your own remote backup.
  113. I do, but as I said, I was using less than 3GB of disk.
  114.
  115. The thing about Stablehost, before the buyout they were so *nice*.
  116. What happens next remains to be seen.
  117. Anything Unlimited is just a marketing gimmick.
  118.
  119. At the end of the day, most big companies's shared hosting make profit from volume and not per subscription. If everyone uses 100GB of space, they won't make a profit.

  139. Hello, we haven't changed up any plans at all on StableHost since we took it over. If you check our site at https://www.stablehost.com/web-hosting.php you can see that all 3 packages we are offering have Unlimited Disk and Bandwidth? So really not sure what package you have, but if you send me a PM I can have it sorted out for you right away.
  140. This is from Paul in chat.
  141.
  142. Your current hosting plan is Shared Stable Basic which is one of our old hosting plan with only 3GB of disk usage. Please let me know if you want to upgrade it to Unlimited Pro plan. You can check the details on the below URL:
  143. https://www.stablehost.com/web-hosting.php
  144. I agree that it still says unlimited. But this is his statement to me.
  145. Unlimited is not unlimited. There is always limitations and the provider can just point you to TOS. A way out....
  146.
  147. But, if you go with a provider with a correct data space allocation, it can't be changed. If you purchased 100 GB, you get it. If you purchased 5 GB, you get it. No way out. You paid for it.
  148.
  149. Hope you have your own remote backup.
  150. Would you believe I've seen providers with arbitrary disk limits - like 5GB, 100GB - run out of space on a server? It happens . The only guarantee you really have is that the provider will give you what they promised whether or not there is a set limit on the storage capacity itself.
  151.
  152. I would like to think that those that don't set an arbitrary limit are prepared to grow the storage capacity seamlessly and they aren't just jumping on the bandwagon for marketing reasons but not every provider cares.
  153. Would you believe I've seen providers with arbitrary disk limits - like 5GB, 100GB - run out of space on a server? It happens .
  154. It happens too often at "hosts" that don't monitor their server, and are only interested in collecting $$$$$$$$$.
  155. Mostly kiddies and too-big operations.
  156. Would you believe I've seen providers with arbitrary disk limits - like 5GB, 100GB - run out of space on a server? It happens .
  157. That is another thing you are talking about. That is called "careless". That is the provider's problem.
  158.
  159. But, the client can demand to be moved because he paid for 5 GB. The provider do not have a way out of it unlike unlimited....
  160. Just like a lot of people have said you really should not focus on the unlimited part. I get it that's the plan you first got, but you have to know that there's got to be limits to everything. If they are truly offering you the unlimited plan then that's what you should have, however you might want to start rethinking that and get a plan that has limits that way you don't end up with having these issues.
  161. They call me the bread baker
  162. A friend wanted to host his high traffic, large size site and asked a few cheap "unlimited" (local) hosts about the deals. They all asked for traffic and size specifics. When questioned - "Why do you need this, it says unlimited?", they answered with something like this, literally: "everyone states that, so we (have to) state it too, but it's not unlimited".
  163.
  164. What I'd do is see about the website size, traffic, needed bandwidth and ask the provider at what price they can accomodate that. In those terms, I'd rather look for a written down max limit, than a confirmation without stating any limits, or "unlimited" (since that's quite vague).
  165.
  166. I'd also rather change either hosting plan, or the host, than hassle with trying to push what I think is my right - just doesn't feel right, regardless of who's "fault" it is.
  167. Yeah, well, I am only using about 1.5 GB of disk, so I really don't see the problem. Not like I want to host a huge site for nothing. Not at all. I do believe in paying for what I need.
  168.
  169. Here is the email I just got from Stablehost.
  170.
  171. I'm contacting you regarding a possible confusion about your account.
  172.
  173. The current plan you have is "Shared Stable Basic", which comes with 3GB (was 1GB) of space and everything else pretty much unlimited.
  174. ...
  175.
  176. Our plans have changed and the reason yours was not upgraded is because we still honor our old plans and their pricing.
  177.
  178. These are 2 options (if you need more than 3GB):
  179.
  180. Upgrade to the old Stable plan with 7GB or Plus that offered 20GB.
  181. Upgrade to the new Pro plan which comes with unlimited space.
  182. ...
  183.
  184. If you have any further questions please let me know.

  192. Whenever a company is bought out, the thing that you can usually count on is the new owner has to make some money, because they now have debt service that the old owner just didn't have. I get all that.

  211. I am quite familiar with how things work internally in StableHost and I can tell you this looks normal (don't pay attention to the cPanel limits, they're often broken or unreliable).
  212.
  213. This is not about cutting off unlimited plans, you're just paying for a very old (+5 year old) plan.
  214.
  215. I would suggest switching to the Unlimited Pro plan they're offering if you want to be in the "unlimited" bandwagon, judging by what you're have said, you shouldn't have any space issues and they wouldn't be setting any "outstanding" limit on your usage.
  216. This thread is sad, mostly because we have competitors of StableHost who continue to bash them without any investigation.
  217.
  218. I used to own StableHost, I'll be happy to explain why you don't have unlimited.
  219.
  220. Prior to going unlimited, we had 3GB, 7GB (and I think) 20GB plans which it sounds like you have one of those plans. If you wanted to upgrade to an unlimited plan, I would suggest contacting the sales team at StableHost. The unlimited plan costs more than what the $3.95 plan did so that's why at the time, we didn't just automatically upgrade everyone, we left the old plans and gave the customers the option of upgrading.
  221.
  222. Now, let's stop bashing unlimited hosts folks....
  223. Do you dream in binary and looking for a full time job? I am looking for qualified nerds to fill multiple system administration positions.
  224. Please PM me if you think you'd fit in.

  232. Tyler,
  233.
  234. Well, when I signed up at Stablehost in 2013, it was for unlimited domains, disk and transfers. There was no mention of any 3GB limit.
  235. I never abused any of that and I am not at all bashing Stablehost.
  236. As someone here said at the time, Stablehost is like fine wine. Great service and support.
  237. Much better than some others I have used over the years. I had to give it a try.
  238. And it was surprisingly good.
  239.
  240. Stablehost has had it's moments, of course. I have had downtime that was preventable. Like the time I pointed out an error in the logs caused by the Lightspeed webserver, and was told "don't worry about it, it's not causing any problems."
  241. And then a few months later someone put apache on my shared server and now that error message mattered. Oops. I said to your senior tech who is still there "See, those error messages are eligible to be resolved, even if they are not causing a problem. Because they might some day." I was down a day or two.
  242.
  243. But Stablehost is the best inexpensive host I have used. I have few complaints. I don't care for the new support system that is chat only. I liked the tickets better. But it's working for me.
  244.
  245. And then again, after a buyout, you always wonder what's gonna happen next.
