- The Dreadbriar Forest of Picardy was once known as the Ariella Woodlands, named after an exceptionally powerful Hamadryad that presided over it. Rather than bonded to a normal tree, she was instead bonded to a massive clonal colony tree organism that made up 80% of the forest. She lived among the other hamadryads in relative peace and harmony until war was brought to the Northern regions of France. Ariella fought back ruthlessly against any attempts to deforest her woods for wartime industrialization, as well as any approaching armies trying to pass through or fight within the area, and for several years she was completely successful. Her life force being connected to such a massive tree meant there was little people could do to stop her through direct physical altercations, so the people instead turned to arcane curses and poisons, hoping to incapacitate Ariella and sever her connection from her tree. Instead it turned her mad and feral and far more dangerous than she had ever been before, and her corruption spread to nearly all the flora and fauna of the forest, turning the place into a violent nightmare normally only found in the darkest depths of the Feywild.
- The other hamadryads banded together to put a stop to Ariella, and while they succeeded in putting their sister's soul to rest the corruption that had spread through her tree to the rest of the forest could not be reversed. Disheartened, the hamadryads left behind their home to find new forests to protect, all except for Aeda. Unlike the other hamadryads, Aeda was born to this new cursed forest and was left undiscovered by her sisters upon their departure. She grew up alone in Dreadbriar forest, the only saving grace of her situation being the relatively wide berth most creatures of the forest gave her out of some form of apparent deference. Regardless of this, Aeda still spent most of her life fighting to survive, drawing on the violent corruption of the forest into her dryad form to hunt and combat enemies.
- Being the only remotely sane creature in the entire forest had left Aeda with a strong desire to venture out to the rest of the world, and she eventually did. There, she quickly encountered Eliza and attached herself to the noble woman like she was an elder sister or mother, promising to help her out as long as Eliza in turn helped her find her hamadryad sisters and work towards restoring her home to the tranquil woods it used to be. Aeda knows and cares little about society and politics, content to simply do what Eliza asks of her.
