- District 1 - The Dump
- The main character wakes up in the middle of an area made practically of junk piles, unaware of where they are or who they are, and with a broken head. With nothing to do but walk, they encounter an old robot (head type TBD) who says that you aren't the first to fall down here, quickly giving you a tin can to place on your head. They asks you your name, and the player is given an name input screen, but are forced to enter the name Alum. The old robot says a small outpost is nearby, but warns you that the path is dangerous.
- A few melancholic screens, Alum encounters a large garbage pile that rumbles. Out of it pops a robot with a gun for a head, who hops down and introduces themselves as Smith. Smith is friendly, and very talkative, giving you a quick rundown of your situation, as someone who has been in it before; You're a robot in the City, dropped from somewhere higher up and as a result lost your memory when your head was damaged. They guide you to the outpost, which has a few huts made of trash, but quite a few other robots. Smith says the place has been filling up because of certain events, but welcomes you anyway.
- Alum questions the events, but Smith simply describes it as "bad things happening everywhere". Alum asks how they can help, which Smith is surprised by, but scoffs off, saying it's safer to just stay at the outpost. An argument starts, ending with Alum punching Smith to the ground, making them realize that Alum is actually very serious. They explain that they don't know, but they can probably get answers if they head to the top of the City and speak with Her, the MIRACULUM, creator of their kind and heart of the City.
- Smith says they want to join you, but they have to get something from their hut. You both head in, but Smith seems to have misplaced the item in their very sparse living space. The player is given a brief tutorial for the detective aspects of the game, as you can gather clues by inspecting objects around the room. By putting the pieces together, you find that Smith has been carrying their item the whole time, a baseball bat, and was using this as an excuse to get you to leave on your own. They wonder if you were a detective in your previous life, and quickly fishes out some clothes for you to wear, a trilby and a jacket.
- Leaving the outpost, there are a few more melancholic screens, before the sound of a telephone starts ringing through the entire area, causing Smith to have a panic attack. As the ringing concludes, several monsters made of trash appear, and start to attack the two. Smith says that they knew this was a bad idea, but is surprised when Alum takes out one of the monsters in a single punch, and decides to join in on the fight.
- After the first fight of the game, Smith is shocked that they actually survived, and now fully decides to join you, for real. They then encounter a very simple door, which Smith says is the way up. They also note that this is going to be a long journey, as there are 30 districts in the City, with the MIRACULUM being located at the very top. You both enter the door, and make your way up the dark stairwell to the next district.
- District 2 - Lower Class District
- As Alum and Smith reach the top of the stairwell, they meet a robot with a book for a head who says he'll keep track of their story so it isn't forgotten, which Smith reacts to with a nihilistic response. They enter the next district, which at first seems to be a war-torn series of ruins. Following the ruin paths leads to fights with more enemies, and eventually to the reveal of the massive towers of buildings in the distance, which break the darkness of the rest of the area.
- Smith says the city is named Mobius, the never ending town, and that its not as beautiful up close as it is from a distance. The gun-head also explains that its not going to be as easy to get up to the next district, but he knows someone who can help. The two slide down a hill to make it into the city. Up close, its revealed that the massive towers are houses practically stacked on top of each other in order to accommodate for all of the residents. Some entrance ways are even placed in unconventional ways to make the buildings accessible at all.
- Before they can explore Mobius, someone recognizes Smith and pulls you two over, clearly upset. The robot has a cardboard box for a head, and gets into an argument with smith over money. Alum quickly intervenes, stopping the fight. After an explanation of why Smith is back up from the dump, the robot (name TBD) says they're a salesman, and they will willingly give the two items... as long as they actually pay for it (using the currency "bits" which are basically scraps of non-descript metal). Smith excitedly agrees, which bothers the salesman, and they tell the party to shove off.
- Smith says the person they're looking for lives in the lower parts of Mobius, and that they're well acquainted. The player is free to explore, and will most likely run into a large, golden, ornate door that doesn't fit the rest of the area. A robot with a round head and built in permanent smile stands at the front, and talking to it will reveal that the door is to an elevator. After saying you can go to any floor, you can pick one, but will continually deny you.
- There are a lot of people to talk to in Mobius, and as you continue the game different structures will start to open and stores will start to change, making it a central hub that you will be returning to many times. For now the story will continue once you enter the largest house on the ground level you can find. The house is considerably better looking compared to the rest of Mobius, by a large degree. Inside is several more of the round headed robots that seem unable to talk and are dressed in butler and maid outfits. Smith leads you to the main room, and meet a robot in a suit with a smoke machine for a head.
