- HISTORY
- =======
- Along time ago I felt a little sad and depressed over the goals of a community event that did not meet my expectations. My life changed when the following discussion took place...
- AngryLarry: This is BS
- Darkmagician1184: in my experience, ceiling walking in any game is OKAY (Reaction: Eggplant)
- Neerrm: Make your own event
- AngryLarry: That is certainly an alternative to the argument.
- Darkmagician1184: With blackjack and hookers!
- YOU HAVE BANNED DARKMAGICIAN1184 FROM THIS CHANNEL
- Neerrm: i can give you 7 rpgs to run
- And thus NEERRMCON was born!

- WHAT IS NEERRMCON?
- ==================
- NEERRMCON is an RPG speedrunning/speedlearning event that takes 7 RPGS and forces you to learn them in 7 weeks. Games and goals are selected by Neerrm (twitch.tv/neerrm) with careful consideration to their length, realistic goals, and enjoyment. The idea is to do something new, out of the ordinary, and to throw some times on the board in the process. The event will also kickstart new life into this rando player's content.

- GAMES & GOALS
- =============
- Week #1: Radiant Historia (DS, turn-based, any% WR 3:12:34)
- - Completed in 08:56:47 on 4/28/2018
- - 2nd place on the leader boards
- - This game is a lot like Andy Capp's Hot Fries. Very tactical, as if you had to pick and choose when to eat one, when to lick your fingers, and when to clean your hands. The combat is great but RNG and compensating for things going wrong will leave you with an aftertaste. Would like to half my total time though. 9/10! Will revisit!
- Week #2: Phantasy Star IV (Genesis, turn-based, any% WR 2:57:06)
- - Completed in 08:31:02 on 5/4/2018
- - Steam/PC WORLD RECORD!
- - Game was a lot of fun and something I would like to play again, but probably won't play often. Like eating a bag of Funyuns. Every once in a while you will see it and crave it, but don't go out seeking it. 7/10 with a lower rating because of final boss RNG.
- Week #3: Summon Night: Swordcraft Story (GBA, active battle, any% WR 2:27:51)
- - Completed in 03:02:39 on 5/14/2018
- - 5th place on the leader boards, out of 6
- - I have grown fond of Atlus games and the "generic anime" RPG style I once stayed away from. This game was a lot of fun and while difficult, I did enjoy the difficulty in the boss battles with respect to my level. With practice I am sure I can do all of them a lot better. Still was only 40 minutes off of WR, closest of all Neerrmcon games, which includes a game with a WR of 32 minutes! One down side is that there is not enough fighting, has generic questing, and too much walking. You may desire to play it but is it worth the effort? Kind of like filling your take and deciding if you want to walk inside the Speedway Food Mart for their generic Slurpee. Sure they have a Mt. Dew flavor, but it is like 40 feet away.
- Week #4: Willow (NES, Action, any% WR 1:14:49)
- - Completed in 02:35:19 on 5/20/2018
- - 3th place on the leader boards, out of 3 :(
- - This game is a lot of Zelda's A Link to the Past in its controls. Often you will find killing things a struggle and get yourself trapped whiffing on the enemy only for it to damage you. Last boss on this route is a pain as it is RIP run if you miss with a single magic shot. Switched from "Any%, Deathless" as a result of my skill level during practice. Much like people who eat Lemonheads over Warheads. Some people cannot handle it. I was one of them on this day.
- Week #5: .hack//Infection (PS1 (re-released on PS4), Action, any% WR 1:48:11)
- - Completed in 08:12:53 on 5/28/2018
- - 5th place on the leader boards, out of 5 :(
- - While the game was fun and the concept of the story interested me, I struggled with this game. At times I was able to breeze through fights and splits and other times I struggled to understand what I was doing. I never felt I was able to control the game the same throughout the whole game. Therefore I give this game a bag of Smartfood Popcorn out of 10. Sometimes you eat a bag and it is amazing. Other times you eat it and every piece is partially unpopped and crunchy.
- Week #6: Final Fantasy Adventure (GB, action, any% WR 32:33)
- - Completed in 01:28:42 on 4/28/2018
- - 11th place on the leader boards, out of 11 :(
- - Fun and short game. Has a few cool tricks to warp around the map too! Boss fight is balls but pattern is easy to learn. Much like a Chunky bar with raisins, I could desire it every once in a while, but go long times without eating one because you are not getting enough with your money.
- Week #7: Trails of Cold Steel (PC, turn-based, any% no turbo WR 5:50:12)
- - Completed in 08:12:53 on 6/11/2018
- - 5th place on the leader boards, out of 5 :(
- - Reese's Nutragious, hands down! This was the most fun game of this event. Even in a category that would run 6+ hours, time flies by. The speedrun includes everything that makes a speedrun fun to me. You are playing through the whole game. There are no major manipulations or glitches that skip a huge section of the game. And it was fun to learn. I enjoyed the characters, their interactions with each other, and the story. Will run it a few more times for sure!

- POST-EVENT RETROSPECTIVE
- =============
- A lot of thanks to Neerrm (twitch.tv/neerrm) for throwing this list together. I never truly played any of these games and enjoyed getting a chance to try them. I changed the category with a few games, but that was based on my skill and/or making it a fun watch for people (like turbo vs no turbo in Trails of Cold Steel). The only thing I would do different is perhaps practice a bit more. With most games I never even played through it before attempting the run. Instead I modified notes while watching a video of a top speedrun time in that category. Ultimately this prepared me enough to attempt the runs, but they were pretty crappy in comparison. Then again I feel like I did ok because they were 1st attempts. I am only truly disappointed with Radiant Historia because of the difficulty I had in some fights versus my playthough.
- I will also continue the method of learning a game a week starting soon. My plans are to get times in every numbered Final Fantasy game. The attempts will be more drawn out as I am planning to stream my routing, practice, and have a few attempts based on the length of the games. This might also spill over to other series like Dragon Warrior/Quest, Legend of Heroes, Kingdom Hearts, and other series I never played or only sampled (Ultima, Ys, Persona). Of course a Neerrmcon Fall 2018 might happen before we ever get to these other series too!
- Thanks for being interested, watching, and supporting me!
