  1. Chaos Communication Camp 2019 Kidspace Kitchen Gear Fund Raising
  2. ================================================================
  3.
  4. tl;dr: andreasdotorg is raising money for Kidspace Kitchen. Send funds
  5. to IBAN NL51BUNQ2207896269.
  6.
  7. It's this time of the every four years again: Chaos Camp is approaching quickly.
  8. And as hacker demographics is shifting, we have more and more parents with kids
  9. attending CCC events. And then there's those considering coming, but being
  10. scared of the logistics of camping with kids in the middle of nowhere.
  11.
  12. In 2015, we had many people join forces to make sure kids and their parents felt
  13. welcome at Camp. Orga provided a spectacular location and magnificent tents,
  14. but in the end, it was also the dedication of many of the parents that made the
  15. Family Village a success.
  16.
  17. I remember considering going with the family, and the Wiki said the space would
  18. be "self-organized." Which to me meant: people need to take responsibility,
  19. or nothing at all will happen. And since I like cooking, I decided to offer
  20. my help in getting food to the families. We ended up supplying about 200 kids
  21. and parents with food, and I did a lot of the organization and my due share of
  22. cooking, together with many other volunteers.
  23.
  24. So, here I am, thinking, I would like to do this again. And I know of a lot of
  25. people thinking likewise. Let's make it happen!
  26.
  27. One of the learnings of last time is that you need a bit of gear to cook, and
  28. if you don't plan ahead, it might become expensive. We had that glorious plan
  29. of using a clay pizza oven and some brick rocket stoves to do all of the
  30. cooking. And while the pizza oven was a success, we had a bit of an incident
  31. with the rocket stoves. Contrary to rumors, we actually had an agreement with
  32. the fire brigade to light them and see how they do, but in the end, it turned
  33. out they emitted too many sparks to be safe to operate.
  34.
  35. It ended up with someone alerting the fire brigade, and they did a very
  36. spectacular performance with their historical fire engine, fire fighter
  37. uniforms, and a lot of water. The kids enjoyed it a lot.
  38.
  39. But we also then had to rent a couple of stoves on a very short notice, and
  40. in retrospect, for this kind of money, we could as well have bought them.
  41.
  42. So this time around, I'd like to plan ahead, and acquire gear in advance, that
  43. we even might be able to re-use for other Chaos events in the future.
  44.
  45. And this is what I started collecting money for.
  46.
  47. The plan here is to provide a complete food supply for kids and their parents,
  48. at a clost of €10 per day for adults and kids 14 years and older. Kids between
  49. 2 and 6 years old would be €3/day, between 7 and 13, €6/day. This would include
  50. breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner will be a warm meal, with both a carnivore
  51. and a vegetarian option (with an attempt to provide a vegan option too).
  52.
  53. I'm not collecting that money yet. This here is all about providing an extra
  54. opportunity to chip in for the equipment, especially for those who can afford
  55. to provide a little extra in order to make the experience a better one for
  56. all of us.
  57.
  58. So, how much money do we need? The answer to that is flexible. The minimum
  59. requirement would be two stool cookers and two large pots. That's about €600.
  60. But the more pots we have, the bigger the flexibility in terms of cooking
  61. a variety of dishes. Five days of eating soup would be a bit boring. Also, it
  62. would make a lot of sense to upgrade to a field kitchen on a trailer, so that
  63. instead of a loose collection of items we have one neat and transportable
  64. kitchen.
  65.
  66. The next level thus would be a Progress 57/4 field kitchen (or comparable),
  67. such as this one:
  68.
  69. https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/gulaschkanone-feldkueche-progress-57-4-tuev-3-2020/1035659209-276-19906
  70.
  71. They're running between €1500 and €2000, and come with two pressurized
  72. cookers with 90L and 170L each, plus a pressurized frying pan of 45L. All of
  73. them have a double wall with glycerin inside to prevent the food from burning.
  74.
  75. The ultimate in field kitchens, at least within reasonable civilian
  76. availability, is the TFK 250:
  77.
  78. https://www.militaerbestaende-schult.de/Anhaenger/Anhaenger-Feldkueche-Kaercher-TFK-250.html
  79.
  80. Starting at €5000 for used in a reasonable condition, they come with 2x150L
  81. pressurized pot, 2x55L pressurized frying pan, 2x28L hot water pot, and
  82. 2x78L oven. This would allow us to cook a great variety of dishes.
  83.
  84. Now there's probably work that needs to done to get this into a good condition,
  85. so this is where extra money would go into. You can get them fully restored,
  86. modified to work with liquid propane instead of Diesel, towable by a regular
  87. car instead of a truck, painted in a friendly white instead of camo, for
  88. around €16000, which is a lot more money than I would expect to be able to
  89. collect, but hey, maybe one of you is rich and wouldn't mind helping us out
  90. big way. We might be able to arrange to make the donation tax deductible for
  91. larger chunks of money.
  92.
  93. So, what do we do with the gear between Chaos events? Obviously, there's more
  94. than just Camp: ICMP, GPN and Easterhegg would come to mind, as well as
  95. Congress of course. If it's just a couple of pans and pots, we just put them
  96. into storage. If we make it to a field kitchen, the plan would be to strike
  97. a deal with an organization such as THW Helfervereinigung: they would take care
  98. of storage, maintenance, license plate, insurance etc., in exchange for the
  99. right to use it themselves when we don't need it.
  100.
  101. So, if you like to support Kidspace Kitchen, please send money to either
  102. IBAN NL51BUNQ2207896269, or https://bunq.me/andreasdotorg if you happen to
  103. have iDEAL (don't use Sofort, they'll ask for your banking PIN. Bad style!)
  104.
  105. I'd like to close financing end of March, so that there will be plenty of time
  106. for proper planning an acquisition.
  107.
  108. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me on twitter, @andreasdotorg.
  109. This is not an official Chaos thing, I'm acting all by myself, with a promise
  110. to do everything in the best interest of Kidspace Kitchen.
  111.
  112. P.S.: We might get a clay pizza oven again!
