  1. Local Competitor ranked #1 using spammy unrelated pbn
  2. I have read over and over how unrelated niches wont pass any link juice. Guest post are dead blah blah.

  15. I was checking on who was beating my brother in the serps for his personal business and the guy at #1 has some very crappy looking pbns and other spammy links leading the pack. This is a business in the roofing industry so there is real money from the leads.
  16.
  17. Its interesting to see in 2019 that this stuff still works. Looks like many of the links were created in 2017.
  18.
  19. I have never used any of the automated software to build links but I am sure interested as i looked through his pbns a bit .
  20.
  21. His tier one pbns only had around 20 or 30 links but they came from tier 2s that were just spammed to death and looked like they were built in the 90s. Bizzare that this still works ... They do have some real reviews from clients ... might be one of those things where they used black hat to get them to the top but then they can sustain the rankings because they are getting other trust factors like 5 star reviews to the GBL ... anyway .. happy sunday BHW
  22. Interesting, thanks. I've seen something similar with a competitor in my local market and niche (real estate). Got a lot of spammy contextual links that were paid articles and such. Always fun to look at a backlink profile. :)
  23. I rank sites through a combination of related and non-related backlinks.
  24.
  25. - If the site is non-related, but has a lot of juice (DA/PA) then YES - I get a few of these. The effect is quite significant. I count this as passing authority, as in link juice.
  26. - I also blend with several related links (often with less juice) to stay on topic. I count this as passing authority + relevance (as in, maintaining overall site resonance within the exact niche).
  27.
  28. Combining the two, the effect is amplified. I get to rank sites quite easily with the right content and not many links (medium diff). I often use a few of my own domains, especially the high DA ones are mine (never more than 3). Too bad I'm often too lazy with content (eh, hard work).
  29.
  30. So the answer to your post is, from my perspective, a few high DA/PA links can help a lot, but you need niche related links too.
  31.
  32. Edit: Forgot to say, if they're your competitors, how about reporting them to G. I bet they wouldn't like the PBN stuff.
  33. I have been thinking about that. My brother is coming to visit me soon and figured I would show him when he gets here and see if wants to report them hah.
  34.
  35. Is there a place in analytics to do that or do you make a google account? Hes pretty dang busy as it is so im not sure he will want to mess with it but if someone from google took a look they would be in big trouble I think.
  36. Reporting a competitor just because they are doing things better than you is a real dick move.
  37.
  38. Spend your time, effort and energy outranking them instead of being a douchecanoe and reporting them.
  39. If I report him it will just be to teach him not to be that terrible when building pbn/s ... or dont buy public links ... plus the dick move would be to run a press release documenting all the fake actions he took to increase rankings :)
  40.
  41. But I figured this would ruffle some feathers and I doubt my brother will report him.
  42. Checking to see if I can trademark that word.

  46. Dick move over a dick move.
  47.
  48. Go outrank him and stop crying on BHW.

  59. If those links are made in 2017 and that guy website is still up, then he didn't use spammy links.
  60. Maybe your bro needs an extra reading session on BHW ? :)
  61. Checking to see if I can trademark that word.
  62. Thanks for this, I had missed the awesome variation of such a classic haha
  63. Occupation:Trapped between the Matrix and Bubble
  64. You sure it's the link? What his social presence. Do your brother use Google Search Console?

  67. haha, I do for sure he is not interested in SEO much.
  68. I mean spammy as in looking like shit for tier one.. 3 pages on the pbn ... one is about us .. blank ... one is private policy ... also blank ... They did link out to other authority pages to give the some cover.
  69.
  70. Was just pointing out that spammy shit is ranking someone who is making serious bank on it today. I have had a theory with ranking local pages you can go spammy and then somewhat authenticate all the crap by getting real reviews in your gbl. I think if you get 50+ real reviews for your business it starts protecting you some from the bad quality of your backlinks.
  71.
  72. I will do a case study down the road but it might be awhile . Have to stay focused now

  79. You made me really curious about that website can you share the link through PM ?
  80. Something else I noticed was that even though all of the articles had been posted in 2017 the blog showed that it was recently updated. Another one of his properties was set up the same way.
  81.
  82. I am guessing there is some automated software to tweak something on the page to make it seem fresh? anyone know the name of something that does that.
  83. Checking to see if I can trademark that word.
  84. Already beat you to it. ;)
  85. Dude.... it's not f// spammy ahhahaha it's a very balanced PBN in my opinion, these are top #5 backlinks
  86. # DA/ PA/ Moz Rank
  87. 1) 26 18 1.80
  88. 2) 45 21 2.10
  89. 3) 43 22 2.20
  90. 4) 34 21 2.10
  91. 5) 90 45 4.50
  92.
  93. This is that guy's main 5 domains, do these metrics look like spammy links to you?
  94.
  95. Those links that you said are spammy are mainly random links for diversity, but even those links have OK metrics in my opinion:
  96. # DA/ PA/ Moz Rank
  97. 1) 26 18 1.80
  98. 2) 11 13 1.30
  99. 3) 24 18 1.80
  100.
  101. I don't have a PRO Semrush account to check all backlinks, but even the free one show more than enough info, your bro is losing to this guy not because of spammy links and thats for sure.
  102. I guess spammy is not the right word. Was just suprised to see such obvious PBN post public and easy enough for me to stumble on. Wouldn't matter if it had the same metrics as Google it would still be slapped hard from a manual review.
  103.
  104. Hes in 5th because no seo has been done to his site in years. Im not interested in beating this guy at all just was learning what was making him rank. A few years ago when he was ranked first and I was handling his SEO I knew all the players so when I saw a new guy at 1st I was interested how he got there.
  105. Checking to see if I can trademark that word.
  106. I purposely didn't use 'jackwagon'.

A few years ago when he was ranked first and I was handling his SEO I knew all the players so when I saw a new guy at 1st I was interested how he got there.
  110. It's good to know that I don't have to be totally anal about my web2 PBNs and their articles if such spammy/obvious PBN stuff is ranking.
  111.
  112. I can see the argument about not reporting too, if you do something similar karma could bite you later.
  113. Reporting someone has seo's fighting amongst themselves, as this just entices other seo's to fight back against other seo's.
  114.
  115. Google loves this sort of behaviour as it distracts seo's from the real job of trying to rank.
  116. The real enemy here is google.
  117.
  118. Better off to try and recreate the same type of backlinks as this other guy used to see if the method works for you and learn a new technique.
