The Zafiros (Also known as “The Saphires” or “El Imperio”) Is a violent and powerful, predominantly Hispanic street gang actively operating in the east side of Los Santos. They are known to have had ties with numerous Cartels and Crime Syndicates in the past that originated south of the border but The Zafiros have seemingly now broken away from the cartels direct work to focus on maintaining their East Los Santos turf and expanding on it, eliminating competition alone under the hierarchy of the very tactically organized, founders that are now controlling the street gang in Los Santos by using fear and intimidation techniques to protect and control their area. The assembled group first involved itself in trafficking Marijuana. However due to the products low profit rate, the leadership shifted their focus to more lucrative drugs and also invested in the the gun running trade. They are now known to be involved with a majority of the main drug markets running through the state of San Andreas. Affiliated individuals to Maduro or Los Zafiros also speak in a classic Spanish slang known as "Calo" and although they like to be known as a brutal and murderous street gang, the structure of the gang is similar to Cartels operating in South America as the leadership is seemingly somehow more advanced when it comes to prediction and planning. The street gang identifies themselves as The Zafiros and trusted members wear a teal bandanna to show their affiliation to the gang.

A cartel using Vice City as their hub for trafficking drugs in the late 80’s found itself able to expand to a new area to gain more control over the American drug trade and began sending associates and drug lords to different states over the country. One of the states was San Andreas and several cartel members were ordered to move and set up there in order to start gaining control in the cities of Los Santos, Las Venturas and San Fierro. One of the selected locations to move in and gain control was Los Santos, which was once lead by a known criminal Syndicate.

The individual who had been sent to Los Santos (Nicholas Maduro) was a notorious drug lord from Cuba, but was captured in the early 2000’s after a police raid was targeted on a warehouse he was known to control, seizing equipment that was being used to produce illegal narcotics. A number of drug related charges were dropped on the active and well connected criminal and was supposed to have started serving a harsh prison sentence ordered by the court of San Andreas.

The criminal activities relating to the captured cartel associate began to dip in occurrence rate before his son took up a vital part to play in the drug trade in Los Santos and found himself getting himself involved with the production of cannabis – Buying properties in different names to distract federal attention, and begin growing large quantities of marijuana which he would have harvested and bagged up for distribution. Although he was rarely seen making casual street deals personally and was known to employ several drug runners to do his work for him which lead him into a professional way of building new strong connections with equally powerful names in the drug trade.

Due to this, several other drug lords in Los Santos took attention and began investing in the supplier. As time went on the criminal syndicate operating in Los Santos also took interest in the drug producer which lead the cartel associates son and his men into the syndicate, meeting them with some of the most powerful regional contacts in the state. However doing business with this syndicate was different as they were infamous and known to several other powerful organizations who were also competing for the whole of Los Santos’s illegal trade markets – which gave them a bad reputation and found themselves working on the public enemy’s side.

The supplier and his associates within the Syndicate decided to take action and move fast in order to gain a turf and complete control over this location after finding himself growing numerous and strong connections with other successful associates in that current line of work. When the time was right, the syndicate leader was turned on and executed for his poor management skills by a (group of) lower ranking member of his organization. This member then used his connections built through-out his time spent working for the syndicate to set up a stable turf, claiming the whole east side of Los Santos as a location for the newly formed operation to profit from criminal offenses such as kidnappings, murders, drug trafficking and gun trafficking.

Half a decade later it's clear that San Andreas, mainly East Los Santos had been effected by the well-organized drug trafficking that Los Zafiros were operating but as time went on and with money just piling in they were on top of the game. However not all was well as the Syndicate most recent to be crossed and exiled from Los Santos by Los Zafiros had connections who weren't too happy to now be losing out on the trade and began adding pressure to Los Zafiros to bring in more income to pay off the past contacts of the Syndicate which the leader was beheaded 5 years prior to this, by Anthoy Maduro himself in a moment of madness and example. The leader of the organization needed to think and act fast. He needed to either establish another trafficking route in San Andreas or give them a cut of his own profits. Cutting into his own money was something Anthony Maduro was not known for and he didn't intend to start doing so.
