45. Nick Walker, a narcotics detective with the Boston Police Department, has just been killed in the line of duty. Rather than face judgment to determine his final resting place, Nick is recruited by Chief Mildred Proctor into the Rest in Peace Department (R.I.P.D.). Part of the reason for he ending up in this limbo of sorts is that on Earth, he and his partner, Detective Bobby Hayes, in the process of a drug raid, found a stash of gold pieces, which they took for themselves, Nick doing it solely in the want to make a better life for his wife, Julia. The limbo is also despite Nick, before his death, feeling remorse for this action and vowing to turn in his share of the gold, in the process not turning in Bobby. The mandate of the R.I.P.D. is to go back to Earth to find and destroy deados - dead people who have been able to evade judgment and are now back in human form among the living on Earth - so that they will face that judgment, ultimately sending them "down there" as their final resting place. Initially, Nick, learning that he will be going back to Boston, expects that he will be able to reunite with Julia and avenge his death in this job, that is until he learns that R.I.P.D. members are given new appearances and thus new identities. Nick is partnered with Roy Pulsipher, a longtime R.I.P.D. member who was a southern US Marshal during the Civil War era in his life on Earth. Judgmental Roy, who is not told of Nick's criminal actions, hopes to be able to retire soon to go to his final resting place. In the process of their work, they will discover that the gold pieces have a higher more nefarious purpose which, if in the wrong hands, could spell the end of life on Earth as it is known. As such, Nick tries to do this work while attending to his own initial goals of avenging his death and reuniting with Julia, which may not be easy considering the role of the gold pieces and with Roy and Proctor constantly looking over his dead shoulder.
 46. In Boston, the dirty cop Nick hides gold that he has stolen from drug-dealers with his partner Hayes in the backyard of his house. However, on the next morning, Nick tells Hayes that he will deliver the evidence to the police since he loves his wife Julia and he could not face her acting that way. Nick and Hayes are assigned to a raid against a dangerous gang and unexpectedly Hayes kills Nick. Nick is drawn by a tunnel and based on his previous experience in the police department, he is assigned in the afterlife by the Proctor to join the Rest in Peace Department that protects the living world from the undead and work with the old-fashioned agent Roy. Roy and Nick accidentally find that Hayes in plotting a scheme to revert the sense of the tunnel to the afterlife and bring the Apocalypse to Earth.
 47. R.I.P.D. (2013) * Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, Stephanie Szostak, James Hong, Marisa Miller, Robert Knepper, Mike O'Malley. DOA - Woeful mashup of MEN IN BLACK meets GHOST BUSTERS attempt at a new sci-fi/comedy franchise based on a comic book by Peter M. Lenkov about an elite supernatural crime fighting force (Rest In Peace Department, get it?) with recently killed-in-the-line-of-fire cop Reynolds teamed up with Old West peace officer Bridges (channeling his Rooster Cogburn with a mouthful of gravel; seriously he's barely comprehensible and I love Bridges but whoa; really bad choice here to go with that) to, what else, save the world from nefarious 'dead-os' (evil dead). Yeah I know. The hackneyed screenplay by Phil Haym Matt Manfredi & David Dobkin delivers no laughs, character development or entertainment and the D-grade level CGI is dreadfully cheesy (do we really need TWO obese 'dead-os'? The monstrosities here are just monstrously tediously terrible). Robert Schwentke is responsible for the reprehensible 'direction'. Truly one of the worst films of the year.
 48. From Robert Schwentke, the director of OK movies like RED and The Time Traveller's Wife, this summer we got R.I.P.D., an action comedy based on a comic book. If you've seen the trailer, you know you shouldn't expect much from it - although in my opinion, before you see the actual movie, it's reasonable to hope it will at least be funny, lighthearted and well executed by the good cast it features. Unfortunately, the critics hate it, it is a box office bomb and it holds extremely low ratings on various movie review sites all over the internet. The reasons for this are many, and I wouldn't even say the unoriginal story is one of them. So this is probably the ultimate "must never see" movie.

After being killed by his cop partner Hayes (Kevin Bacon), who didn't want him to turn in some gold the two of them had taken from dealers days ago, Nick (Ryan Reynolds) is recruited by the Rest in Peace Department. Along with his new partner, former sheriff Roy (Jeff Bridges), he must go back to Earth daily in order to hunt down and bring back dead people. While trying to reconnect with his wife (who doesn't recognise him because he was given a different body), he also follows his ex partner and starts a sort of private investigation, unauthorised by the R.I.P.D. This might not sound that bad, and actually, as I said before, I don't think the story itself is one of the things that made this movie a complete failure.

First of all, there's the special effects. I've read many reviews online, and quite a lot say the CGI was fine. Are you kidding? This movie looks worse than an Eighties' video game! And that is unforgivable for a movie with a $130 million budget. I recently reviewed Elysium, a sci-fi that, with a smaller budget, managed to look truly impressive. We might argue R.I.P.D. features more famous actors - quantity and perhaps even quality wise - who cost more, that way leaving less money for the CGI, but this would only mean the director is an idiot: who cares about the good actors if the movie looks like utter crap? And therefore, who cares about the actors in R.I.P.D. at all? Their performances weren't horrible, but that was to be expected. On the other hand, it didn't seem their roles were too demanding. Mary-Louise Parker was good as the director of the Boston division of the R.I.P.D. Proctor. but she didn't get enough screen time to show her qualities.

Jeff Bridges is the only one that might manage to make you laugh from time to time, but his mumbling can get pretty irritating. Another big problem is that you never think of Bridges and Reynolds as one - even though they are partners and share the same job, there's nothing really keeping them together, at least nothing we can truly feel. We should just believe it because the movie says things are the way they are. Bridges and Parker are a much better couple, but then again they share too little screen time. And here's something else: the movie is short, fortunately, since it's awful, but not even this can be considered a redeeming quality, as it makes the story feel rushed and the characters remain undeveloped causing the public to be unable to feel for anybody. Last but not least, R.I.P.D. is one of the most unfunny movies I've seen in a long time - and that's a tragedy for a comedy (no pun intended). Sadly, I think it has potential: for example, I found Nick's 'reincarnation' as the little Chinese guy who threatens people with a banana to be cute. But in the end, this movie has absolutely nothing to offer.

Rating: 3/10 Read more at http://passpopcorn.wordpress.com/
 49. There is a legitimate film in here somewhere, buried deep beneath the rubble of its terrible script and editing.
