- ---
- Articles:
- “the” = we both (speaker and listener) have a specific idea about which thing I’m talking about
- I need to get a new phone. (No one has a specific idea of which phone.)
- I got a new phone yesterday. (I have a specific idea, but you don’t.)
- I heard you got a new phone yesterday. (You have a specific idea, but I don’t.)
- I bought the phone yesterday. (We’ve both talked about this phone, and we both have a specific idea about which phone.)
- a/an (indefinite articles)
- a: the next sound is a consonant sound (a one-way street, a university)
- an: the next sound is a vowel sound (an hour, an honest person, an honor)
- ---
- Determiners: words that go at the beginning of noun phrases, which “determine” which noun it is
- - articles
- - possessives (my, your, his,...)
- - quantifiers (each, every, all, some, many, several,...)
- - demonstratives (this, that, these, those)
- All nouns have a determiner, but sometimes it’s the zero article. (Singular nouns can’t have the zero article, so they must have another word at the beginning.)
- ---
- Remember that the head noun always goes last in English:
- English learner = someone who is learning English (a learner of English)
- learner English = the type of English that learners speak
- ---
- p. 108 part 1 - choose two things your partner has with them, and ask these questions about them
- How did it get to the store?

- It must have been transported by plane. = I’m pretty sure, because other explanations don’t make sense.
- It can’t have been transported by truck, because it crossed an ocean. = I think this is impossible.
- might/must/can’t = speculation (with different degrees of certainty)
- have + past participle = perfect form = something about the past
- be + past participle = passive voice = the action happened to this thing

- ---
- Are you good at bargaining? (negotiating for a better price)
- auction = when you try to find who can pay the most for something and sell it to that person
- bid = the action of offering a price for an auction (and the noun for the money offered)

- ---

- *I can offer you for $7.
- -> I can offer it to you for $7.
- *How could you offer my product for her?
- -> How could you offer my product to her?
- Buy it for her. Cook it for her. Do it for her. (Do the action and then she benefits.)
- Give it to her. Offer it to her. Send it to her. (She is included in the action itself.)
- *You can’t buy it for less $200.
- -> You can’t buy it for less than $200.
