- EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE - NIGHT
- An empty stretch of highway.
- A lone police cruiser sits in front of a convenience store,
- the lights flash. A truck with a smoking engine and Texas
- plates sits next to it.
- OFFICER DAVID PARKS, (25) steps out of his cruiser then
- presses the mic to his radio. Three people argue inside of a
- convenience store.
- PARKS
- (into radio)
- 1532, dispatch we're 97, code two.
- DISPATCH (O.S.)
- 10-4, 1532.
- OFFICER LANCE HAWKINS, (21) is next to him.
- HAWKINS
- Should we call for backup, sir?
- Parks turns to Hawkins and points at him.
- PARKS
- Watch. Let me do the talking.
- Anything looks weird, call it. No
- need to call backup for this.
- HAWKINS
- 10-4 sir.
- INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - NIGHT
- The two walk in and immediately see two people. The older
- one, JOHN STEVENS, (late-40s) wears a confederate flag hat
- with a jacket and jeans.
- JOHN
- Look pal, see-
- He pulls out a Triple-A card.
- JOHN (CONT’D)
- I just gotta get me a tow truck so
- I can bring my truck to the shop.
- Please, I gotta just borrow your
- phone.
- The STOREKEEPER, (late-50s) points toward the door.
- STOREKEEPER
- No, you leave!
- The younger one, JACK STEVENS, (early-20s) wears a jacket and
- jeans and has long hair.
- JOHN
- God damn brown motherfucker...
- John's fists clench up.
- JACK
- Dad, let's just go outside, we'll-
- The two officers watch this for a moment. The door closes
- behind them and a "DING" can be heard.
- Hawkins points at the door.
- HAWKINS
- That sensor's a little late.
- Hawkins chuckles and grins.
- Parks glares at him, then looks at the two.
- The storekeeper looks at Hawkins and points.
- STOREKEEPER
- These men, right here sir! I do not
- allow racists in my store!
- JOHN
- Look pal, we were just looking to
- borrow a phone. No trouble here.
- Hey, slant eyes.
- Parks shoots him a grin.
- John's hands are in his pockets.
- PARKS
- Step back from the counter sir,
- hands out your pockets.
- Parks looks over at John and motions toward him.
- John takes his hand out of his pockets then cocks his head in
- confusion at Parks.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- John, was it?
- JOHN
- Yeah.
- PARKS
- How about you and your son step
- outside and talk with me? Hawkins,
- check the security footage.
- Hawkins nods.
- EXT. CONVENIENCE STORE - NIGHT
- John takes a sigh.
- PARKS
- You alright?
- John massages his eyes.
- JOHN
- Just needed to borrow a phone man,
- phone's dead and the battery in my
- truck died. He just went on
- spouting about how I was racist.
- Christ, people these days gettin'
- butthurt over lil' symbols like
- these. They were just words, too. I
- wasn't trying to cause any trouble.
- John takes off his hat.
- JOHN (CONT’D)
- Long night. We were trying to make
- it to New Mexico when the truck
- broke down.
- PARKS
- I see. Sorry to even ask, but you
- guys got weapons on you?
- John motions over to the shotgun mounted on the truck.
- JOHN
- And then mine and my son's carry
- pieces.
- PARKS
- Alright, thanks. Let's just get you
- guys outta here as soon as we can.
- JOHN
- Hey officer?
- Parks looks back.
- JOHN (CONT’D)
- You ain't too bad for a slant.
- Hawkins steps back out.
- HAWKINS
- Yeah, he apparently called the cops
- and freaked out seeing the hat, he
- said a few other things too, called
- him a few names.
- PARKS
- They get violent?
- HAWKINS
- Not that I saw, sir.
- With a sigh, he massages his eyes, then thumbs his radio.
- PARKS
- (into radio)
- 1532, dispatch.
- DISPATCH

- He glances at Hawkins and motions for him to follow him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Alright sir, we're gonna be across
- the street doing traffic if you
- need us, just wait out here for the
- truck. Anything happens, just give
- us a holler or call.
- JACK
- Thanks, officer.
- Parks and Hawkins get back into their cruiser.
- INT. POLICE CRUISER - NIGHT
- The two wait across the street from the gas station and clock
- traffic.
- HAWKINS
- So, how'd I do?
- Parks jots something down on a paper and stares at the
- passing vehicles.
- PARKS
- That's a three.
- HAWKINS
- Come on, just a three?
- PARKS
- You should've handled that faster.
- HAWKINS
- Why didn't you?
- Parks shoots him a grin.
- PARKS
- The guy's truck engine was smoking,
- he had no reason to be robbing the
- place or causing any kind of
- trouble for us. Pay attention,
- rook.
- HAWKINS
- Right. Well it's not another two
- which is good.
- Hawkins clocks traffic with a radar gun.
- HAWKINS (CONT’D)
- You were military though? A few of
- the guys at the station said you
- were in Afghanistan a few years.
- David glances over at the radar gun.
- He takes a deep breath.
- PARKS
- Yeah, still kind of am.
- HAWKINS
- That's really cool! You know I was
- gonna join, but then they wouldn't
- take me because-
- Parks takes a sigh, then massages his eyes.
- PARKS
- Fuck, kid- You gave 'em a reason
- not to.
- Parks takes out his phone, checks it, then puts it back in
- his pocket.
- HAWKINS
- (voice trails off)
- ...Of a surgery when I was nine.
- David continues to watch cars pass.
- He massages his eyes as Hawkins continues to take radar.
- HAWKINS (CONT’D)
- Pretty quiet today, huh?
- Parks slowly moves his head and glares at Hawkins.
- PARKS
- I'm gonna make you eat those
- fucking words.
- A car screams past the two-
- HAWKINS
- Holy shit! Did you see that?!
- Parks picks up the car's radio.
- PARKS
- You called it, not me. Light 'em
- up.
- Hawkins floors the accelerator and speeds up behind the other
- car.
- Hawkins turns on the siren and Parks grabs the radio.
- The siren blares as the car begins to pull over.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- 1532, dispatch, be advised
- performing TC on reckless driver-

- The two get out and approach.
- Hawkins crosses toward the passenger's side.

- Parks looks over. His eyes widen.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- GRAB THE RIFLE NOW, HAWKINS!
- Hawkins shakes as he reaches into the car and pulls out the
- patrol rifle.
- Hawkins now crouches next against the door of the cruiser. He

- IND VOICE 1 (O.S.)
- FUCK YOU WEY!
- The fire continues as Parks watches one charge him with a
- knife.
- Parks fires a round into his chest and just watches him come
- at him.
- He places his hand on the forend of the shotgun as the man
- starts to swing his knife at him.
- Parks kicks him back, chambers a round, and fires as the
- man's intestines hang out.
- PARKS
- What the fuck?!
- IND VOICE 1 (O.S.)
- You just fucked up homie.
- He trains his weapon once more and tries to chamber the next

- PARKS (CONT’D)

- JAMES
- Grab a drink then? Do some catching

- Dave nods.
- PARKS
- Haven't seen you since...
- JAMES
- ...Convoy.
- PARKS
- Time flies, fuck.

- What? The fuck you want? You feds?
- He's clearly nervous.
- WHITE
- Officer- Or do you want it to be

- all I know.
- JAMES
- If it's on me, I don't have any god
- damn dogs.
- Parks rolls his eyes.
- PARKS
- If it was on you, I'd have thrown
- you in cuffs.
- JAMES
- Not if there was already an IED

- PARKS
- James...
- James smiles, though it looks nervous.
- JAMES
- I'm just joking. I swear.

- James pokes the case with a screwdriver.
- Elena crouches behind a couch.
- ELENA
- Why did you want me back here

- PARKS
- So if it goes off, there's not
- pieces of me inside of you. Plus,
- they're not gonna come out here
- because someone gave me a
- briefcase.
- ELENA
- But I already get pieces of you
- inside me.
- PARKS
- Fuck, walked int-
- James slams his hand against the top of the case.
- PARKS (CONT’D)

- Parks unlatches the case and takes out a flashlight.
- PARKS
- How'd they set these things up?
- JAMES
- Damn things were rigged for a few
- inches, you pulled up and boom.
- Just look under it for wires.
- Parks glances under it, opening the case just a crack. He
- shines the light around inside of it.
- JAMES (CONT’D)
- Anything?
- PARKS
- Negative, any clear string would've
- made a shadow too. Fuck it, I'm
- going for it.
- He opens the case all the way. The files are stacked neatly.
- Elena emerges from behind Parks's couch.
- ELENA
- What is it? Anything solid on

- Parks.
- Before anything else, a hatchback runs over Torres, knocking
- him to the ground.
- Parks sees this and clutches his arm. He keeps his gun out
- and sprints to the scene.
- James gets out of the car.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What the fuck...
- Torres isn't getting back up, but he's still breathing. James
- is pointing wildly at Torres.
- TORRES
- Fuck...
- JAMES
- He knows where they are!
- Parks holsters his weapon and takes out his hand cuffs. He
- presses his knee against his ass.
- PARKS
- Grab his other arm.
- James helps him out and he manages to get them on him.
- TORRES
- You...
- JAMES
- WHERE ARE THEY?!
- He flips Torres on his back.
- PARKS
- You fucking recognize me?
- TORRES
- Yeah, you should be dead.
- JAMES
- You'll be fucking dead if you don't
- tell me where they keep the cat
- girls!
- Parks watches a cruiser a few blocks away close in.
- PARKS
- Back off, James!
- Parks glares at him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I want answers. Where's your
- partner?
- He takes out his badge and keeps it in the direction of the
- approaching cruiser.
- TORRES
- Fuck you cabron, I don't need to
- tell you shit. Besides, my ride's
- on its way here.
- A cruiser pulls up with two officers. They get out of their
- cruiser. One runs over to James.
- IND OFFICER 3
- Sir, step back.
- James goes to his car and watches this.
- JAMES
- He knows where the cat girls are,
- don't let him get away with that
- knowledge!
- IND OFFICER 1
- We won't sir, just stand back.
- A small army of cruisers shows up behind them.
- TORRES
- Don't leave me down here, I can
- fucking stand, if I didn't have
- these cuffs I could probably beat
- the shit out of you, wey!
- Parks just watches this.
- PARKS
- You never answered my question.
- TORRES
- My answer is, "Fuck you."
- Parks rolls his eyes.
- His hands shake in anger.
- Another cruiser rolls up with Stanton in it.
- STANTON
- You good, Parks?
- He gives an "okay" hand symbol.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- The hell happened?
- Parks points at James.
- JAMES
- Army buddy happened to be driving
- through- Retard ran into traffic,
- got hit.
- Stanton nods.
- STANTON
- Better hope he doesn't sue.
- James just stands there with the officer.
- Stanton thumbs his radio.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- (into radio)
- Dispatch, requesting an additional
- ambulance to 23rd and McDowell.
- Parks watches as three suburbans with lights and sirens start
- advancing on their location.
- PARKS
- Who the hell are these guys?
- Stanton steps in front of Parks and watches all of this.
- The three suburbans stop and surround the officers.
- One man in particular, SMITH, (late-30s) steps out holding
- out a badge.
- Their uniforms read, "DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY".
- STANTON
- Who might you folks be? You weren't
- on our channels.
- SMITH
- Just call me Smith. This individual
- is of importance to national
- security, you see.
- Stanton adjusts his glasses.
- STANTON
- He shot one of my men.
- SMITH
- I'm sorry to hear that-
- STANTON
- I'm sorry ain't exactly going to
- cut it.
- Smith glances at Parks.
- SMITH
- How's the arm doing? My associate
- White was asking earlier.
- Two of the agents walk over to where Torres is detained.
- Stanton takes out his phone. Smith just patiently waits for
- him.
- STANTON
- (into phone)
- Colin? Yeah, waiting out here with
- one of your guys- Agent Smith?
- Stanton eyes's widen.
- He motions toward the officer to move away from Torres.
- SMITH
- Thank you for your cooperation,
- Lieutenant. We'll take it from
- here.
- Two agents pick up Torres. He spits in the direction of Parks
- and glares at Stanton.
- PARKS
- I'LL FUCK YOU UP!
- Stanton grabs Parks.
- STANTON
- Don't do this, not here.
- Smith looks back at him.
- SMITH
- These feelings are normal, officer.
- Anger is a normal emotion in the
- grieving process.
- Parks watches as the agents get into their vehicles and drive
- off.
- A few tears roll down his eyes.
- PARKS
- I was so close, I was this close
- and the feds fucked it up, like
- they do everything fucking else!
- Fuck!
- Parks kicks a can next to him in anger.
- STANTON
- PARKS!
- He pulls Parks aside.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- Look, I get it. This ain't easy by
- any stretch, but you gotta keep
- your shit together. At least until
- that arm of yours heals. I'm
- recommending you for a promotion.
- Parks puts his head down.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- Just keep it together until you get
- put on desk duty for that.
- A tear rolls down his eye.
- James sees this and looks down.
- Another car pulls up.
- Someone jumps out of the driver's seat.
- NELSON
- WHAT THE FUCK, PARKS?!
- PARKS
- My arm's feeling better!
- His eyes widened.
- NELSON
- Are you looking for IA to fire you?
- Hell, worse they get you for faking
- your injuries.
- PARKS
- But-
- Nelson massages his eyes.
- NELSON
- Please get better Parks. Go home.
- PARKS
- Fine.
- INT. CAR - NIGHT
- The two sit in James's car.
- PARKS
- James.
- James watches the road in silence.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What the fuck is wrong with you?
- Parks looks at the police scanner in the backseat of his car.
- JAMES
- I need to know, Dave.
- PARKS
- About shit that exists in Japanese
- cartoons? If it's fucking real?
- JAMES
- You don't get it, but these guys,
- they're fucking connected!
- Parks glares at James.
- PARKS
- You stupid fuck! My partner's dead
- and you're looking for fantasy
- characters?! Tell me when you find
- elves with thick fookin' oirish
- accents, boyo.
- JAMES
- I have some proof that they're
- real, Dave! You just have to
- believe-
- PARKS
- (mockingly)
- Believe me Dave, they're real!
- Parks rolls his eyes.
- James slicks his hair back.
- JAMES
- It sounds fucking nuts, okay? Just
- stick with it. I'll tell you if I'm
- wrong.
- PARKS
- IT DOES.
- Parks pats his shoulder and his face grows to that of
- discomfort.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Shit. Hey James...
- He starts to feel light headed.
- His vision goes in and out.
- JAMES
- Dave?!
- Parks's eyes widen as a massive pain enters his shoulder.
- PARKS
- TAKE THE FUCKING CAST OFF ME!
- JAMES
- Oh shit.
- James pulls over and turns on his hazard lights. He takes off
- his seatbelt and takes out his knife.
- Parks begins to scream in agony as he tries to take his cast
- off with one hand.
- James is hesitant as he stares at Parks, completely unsure of
- what to do.
- JAMES (CONT’D)
- I don't need you bleeding to death
- in my-
- PARKS
- GET IT OFF!
- JAMES
- Shit! You coked up-
- He cuts Parks's cast.
- PARKS
- DAMN IT!
- James freezes up out of sheer confusion.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- KEEP GOING!
- Parks starts to try and get the cast off of himself by prying
- at it with his hand.
- James takes his knife and starts to cut his cast out.
- Parks takes his jacket off. The cast comes free. Parks's
- takes off his shirt.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- So fucking hot in here, jesus
- christ.
- Bandages are wrapped around where he was shot.
- JAMES
- You think I should call Doc?
- Parks shakes his head and starts to take the bandages off of
- his shoulder, finding it...
- ...As if it were unscathed by the round that had struck him.
- All that's left is a scar.
- Parks takes a deep breath.
- PARKS
- What the fuck was that man?
- James just shrugs, his eyes widened.
- Parks puts his shirt back on.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Get me home.
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
- Parks holds his kevlar vest and jacket in his arms as he
- steps out of James's car.
- JAMES
- You gonna be good man?
- Parks stretches out his left arm. A loud "pop" comes out of
- it as he straightens it out.
- PARKS
- Your guess is as good as mine.
- James just looks at this, completely astounded.
- JAMES
- You are one lucky son of a bitch,
- Davey. If only the guys back then
- had the luck you do.
- PARKS
- It doesn't change anything.
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
- The lights are still on when Parks comes back inside.
- PARKS
- Elena?
- ELENA
- I'm in the kitchen!
- PARKS
- ...I need to show you something.
- Elena walks through the kitchen.
- Parks turns on the light.
- Elena's jaw drops as she looks at his arm.
- ELENA
- Your arm...
- Parks stretches out his formerly damaged left arm.
- PARKS
- I don't know.
- She walks over to Parks and holds him.
- ELENA
- They said you weren't going to make
- it, Dave.
- Parks closes his eyes and holds her.
- He kisses her on the forehead and holds her tight.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- Lance's funeral's tomorrow. I got
- your dress uniform dry cleaned.
- With a sigh, Parks's hands hold her tighter as he leans into
- her neck.
- He sits there in silence as he holds her.
- PARKS
- You know I gotta talk to his
- wife... It should have been me,
- Elena.
- ELENA
- Dave. You made it.
- Parks sobs as he holds her.
- FADE TO BLACK.
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
- Parks puts on his dress uniform.
- His face looks weary as the world around him seems to move at
- a different pace than he is.
- He sits and eats his breakfast. His eyes look haggard.
- Elena appears behind him and kisses him on the cheek.
- ELENA
- I'll drive.
- Parks swallows his food.
- PARKS
- Sure, I guess.
- INT. CHURCH - DAY
- PASTOR HILL, (mid-50s) stands behind a podium.
- HILL
- On behalf of the family, I would
- like to thank you...
- Parks sits there in his dress uniform.
- He's spaced out. The words from the pastor drift away.
- The world seems to go away as he looks out a window next to
- him.
- ELENA
- Dave?
- Parks takes a deep breath and snaps out of his trance.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- They want you to say a few words.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- Yeah, uh... Yeah, I'll do that.
- Sorry.
- The eyes of the congregation fix themselves onto Parks.
- Parks makes his way up to the podium. He takes out a set of
- notecards. His hands shake as he looks up at the crowd.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- (into mic)
- You guys can hear me alright?
- He looks at the front row of pews which give him a thumbs up
- and a smile.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Roger that...
- He starts to rearrange his notecards.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Lance Hawkins was 21 when he taken
- away from us. To me, he seemed a
- lot older than that.
- He tries to force a smile as he looks back down at his cards,
- then back at the audience.
- Parks sighs.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He was however, young,
- inexperienced, and struggled. He
- was stupid.
- A gasp from the audience as they begin to murmur amongst
- themselves.
- Sergeant Steele and Nelson are in the audience. Nelson's eyes
- widen and he massages his eyes. Steele jots down some more
- notes.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He'd made mistakes. I was hard on
- him and so were all the others who
- worked with him during his field
- training period.
- Parks takes another breath. His hands almost freeze up and he
- has to move the cards that he just spoke aside.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- However, and Mrs. Hawkins please
- correct me if I'm wrong- He was
- often times trying to correct
- himself in his mistakes. He'd go
- through notepads, and I noticed
- that at the end of them he'd have a
- set of goals.
- The audience goes silent.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He'd ask me what he missed out on.
- How he could do his job better, how
- he could keep both of us safe.
- Parks chuckles.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He was obsessive with his notes and
- trying to better himself as an
- officer. Even in his final moments,
- he was listening to me, using
- everything he learned...
- Parks looks down and sets his notecards aside.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- In all, we lost him. He was good.
- He steps off the podium and walks back to his seat. He spots
- MARK DIAZ, (late-20s) sitting in the back of the room.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Reporter?
- Parks sits back down.
- HILL
- At this time, I will be speaking
- with Mrs. Hawkins. Refreshments
- will be served in the room to my
- right.
- People around Parks begin to stand up and converse amongst
- themselves. Parks makes his way over to Mark.
- He continues to move over to where Mark is. Mark jots
- something down "unaware" in his phone next to Parks's name.
- PARKS
- You better have a good reason to be
- here.
- Mark stands up and smiles at Parks.
- MARK
- Step outside with me, I need a few
- words with you.
- PARKS
- Like hell you do!
- People glance over at him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- (hushed)
- Like hell you do.
- MARK
- See what I mean?
- Mark puts his phone in his pocket. He stands up and walks
- with Parks.
- Mark looks forward.
- MARK (CONT’D)
- (whispering)
- Look, more people who have no idea
- what you've actually just
- uncovered.
- LAYLA HAWKINS, (22) suddenly holds Parks, sobbing.
- LAYLA
- He's never coming back! He's never
- coming back.
- Parks's eyes widen as he holds her.
- A look of shock in Parks's eyes. Mark walks up behind her and
- taps her on the shoulder.
- She turns around.
- He pulls out a handkerchief and passes it to her.
- MARK
- Mrs. Hawkins, your husband was a
- hero who handled the situation as
- best he could.
- Layla takes the handkerchief and sobs into it.
- LAYLA
- He was going to be a dad, Officer
- Parks.
- PARKS
- Dave. Just, Dave.
- She sits in the pews and struggles to regain her composure.
- Layla struggles to say anything.
- Her phone rings.
- LAYLA
- Hold on, I have to take this.
- She sniffles.
- PARKS
- If you need anything, just ask.
- LAYLA
- Thank you, Dave.
- EXT. CHURCH - DAY
- The rain comes down. Mark leans against the wall with a
- cigarette in his mouth.
- MARK
- I'm surprised, newly promoted
- detective. You don't realize the
- shit you've just stepped in, do
- you?
- PARKS
- Cut the shit, what do you know?
- MARK
- Well Torres is dead. Someone did
- you a favor, my man. Seems like the
- responding officers can't seem to
- get their radios working, so they
- had to use their personal phones to
- call up the coroner. Better meet
- 'em there.
- Parks's eyes widen.
- PARKS
- The feds got him last night.
- MARK
- (mocking)
- But the feds!
- He laughs at this.
- MARK (CONT’D)
- Oh, the guys in suits! Right!
- Parks's eyes widen in anger as he walks over to Mark.
- PARKS
- What the fuck are you not telling
- me or anyone on this investigation?
- There's a dead cop and you want to
- play Frank fucking West?
- MARK
- I actually look up to the guy
- myself, but-
- Parks gives him a death glare and gets ready to raise his arm
- as if to strangle him.
- MARK (CONT’D)
- Okay, okay, look. I'm just on the
- side looking to tell the truth, the
- facts of the matter, you don't see
- that shit anymore.
- Parks motions for him to go on.
- MARK (CONT’D)
- The truth is, there's some kind of
- war breaking out. You happened to
- be a roadblock in the middle of it.
- The dead guy? Guy who got his
- brains blown out and caused you
- guys to go light up that car? Step
- away while you can, Dave.
- He shows a scar on his neck.
- MARK (CONT’D)
- Because you and I, we ain't built
- for this.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- That's all I need.
- INT. CHURCH - DAY
- Parks walks over to Elena.
- PARKS
- I need to go.
- ELENA
- Dave, his wife...
- Layla is in line to look into Lance's grave.
- Parks takes a moment to glance at her, then glances at his
- phone.
- He turns away and walks out of the church.
- EXT. CHURCH - DAY
- Nelson walks up next to Parks as he steps out.
- NELSON
- Parks, I advise you be careful when
- you do things like that. IA's been
- up and down your case all day,
- there's a chance they found
- something.
- PARKS
- There's always a chance.
- Parks stretches out his arm and walks over to his car.
- NELSON
- What happened to your cast?
- PARKS
- I was just lucky, I guess.
- Nelson just shrugs.
- NELSON
- Alright then.
- He walks out and gets into his car.
- INT. MORGUE - DAY
- Stanton waits for him in there.
- Parks reads off the case file then looks down at the body.
- Two gunshots to the chest and one to the head.
- STANTON
- You weren't wrong.
- PARKS
- About what?
- STANTON
- Whatever these guys are, they got
- something going with 'em.
- Professional killing by the looks
- of it.
- Parks looks down at the body.
- PARKS
- What do we got here, Vincent from
- Collateral coming to take what's
- his?
- STANTON
- Something like that.
- He points to the glass.
- Three rounds sit in the clear sample glass.
- Parks takes a pair of forceps and looks at them.
- PARKS
- That's not a handgun round.
- STANTON
- Not at all, we're gonna send it up
- to the ME, but from the looks of
- it, it's probably .308.
- THOMAS SCOTT, (mid-50s) runs his scalpel down the man's
- chest. The three watch as the incision sows itself back up
- slowly.
- SCOTT
- As you can see here, Mr. Torres has
- some kind of regenerative healing
- ability.
- STANTON
- The hell kind of freaks are we
- dealing with?
- Parks watches as the incision closes itself.
- SCOTT
- It's nothing I've ever seen
- before.
- PARKS
- Christ.
- SCOTT (CONT’D)
- The skull is interesting however.
- He takes out an autopsy saw.
- Stanton taps him on the shoulder and makes a motion for him
- to put on his glasses.
- He turns on his saw and sparks begin to fly out.
- PARKS
- (over saw)
- IS THAT NORMAL?!
- Scott turns off the saw and sets it down next to his other
- tools.
- SCOTT
- That's some kind of metal. I sent a
- sample up to forensics for
- examination, but other than tha-
- The door opens and slams shut behind them.
- A man Matthews, (late-20s) and a woman, DAWN PAULSEN (early-
- 30s) walk into the room.
- PARKS
- Who the hell are you?
- Matthews has a grin on his face.
- MATTHEWS
- Agents Matthews Matthews and Dawn
- Paulsen, Department of Homeland
- Security, about to secure this
- body.
- PARKS
- This body's in our custody
- actually.
- He bites his lip and looks over at Dawn.
- MATTHEWS
- Oooohhh, well-
- Stanton watches this in confusion.
- Dawn passes a paper to Stanton.
- Stanton watches this puzzled.
- He takes a look at her for a moment and just continues to
- watch her as he takes the paper.
- STANTON
- (reading)
- By order of the Department of
- Homeland security, you are to give
- any details of the murder of
- Officer Lance Hawkins...
- His expression changes to that of anger. Stanton looks up and
- passes the paper back to Dawn.
- Parks's eyes widen.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- All yours then.
- PARKS
- Wait, what?
- Parks stands in front of the body.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Abso fucking lutely not.
- MATTHEWS
- You're really going to impede a
- federal investigation, Officer?
- STANTON
- It's detective now, actually.
- MATTHEWS
- Well, detective!
- Matthews glances at Parks.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- I'm ordered to secure any and all
- evidence by any means necessary.
- Even if it means Miss Dawn here
- knocking you out and dumping you in
- the desert.
- PARKS
- Fuck you.
- MATTHEWS
- That's no way to speak to a federal
- officer, detective.
- Parks glares at Matthews, then walks out of the door in
- anger.
- EXT. MORGUE - DAY
- Parks bursts out of the morgue with a pack of cigarettes.
- PARKS
- FUCK!
- He lights one and puffs on it in anger.
- Diaz appears behind him.
- He steps on a leaf. The sound causes Parks to reach for his
- weapon.
- With a glare, he looks at Diaz.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I take you had something to do with
- evidence being removed from our
- jurisdiction?
- Diaz goes wide eyed.
- DIAZ
- Wait. Who?
- PARKS
- Homeland came in with some familiar
- name...
- He drops his cigarette.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Dawn... Don... Paulsen.
- DIAZ
- Doc had something to do with this?
- PARKS
- That's where I've heard that
- fucking name.
- Parks takes out his phone and thumbs through the contacts.
- DIAZ
- Hey, whatever you're doing, I want
- in on too.
- PARKS
- No, you don't.
- DIAZ
- Even if I have information relating
- to his death that you may very well
- need?
- Parks stops his thumb on James's contact.
- DIAZ (CONT’D)
- This goes both ways you know.
- Parks just looks at Diaz dead in the eyes.
- DIAZ (CONT’D)
- Give me your contact card.
- Parks puts his phone in his pocket. He takes out his wallet
- and passes him his contact card.
- PARKS
- Email me everything you have. Until
- then, I have to make a phone call
- to a friend.
- Diaz nods.
- A van pulls out of a gate at the morgue.
- Matthews sits in the driver's seat, Dawn right next to him.
- Parks goes back inside
- INT. MORGUE - DAY
- Stanton stands there and massages his eyes.
- STANTON
- Go home Parks, we'll figure this
- out next week. Rest up, get someone
- to take a look at you, because
- you're not looking too good.
- Parks just nods.
- PARKS
- Yes, sir.
- Parks takes another sigh as he takes out his phone. He thumbs
- James's contact and calls him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- (into phone)
- Yo James.
- JAMES (O.S.)
- What's up?
- EXT. MORGUE PARKING LOT - DAY
- He walks out the doors of the morgue.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- You still talking to Doc these
- days?
- He unlocks his car.
- JAMES (O.S.)
- Yeah, kind of broke contact after
- the whole convoy incident though.
- We talk here and there.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- Did he ever talk about having a
- sister?
- JAMES (O.S.)
- Nah, he was a closed box when it
- came to family shit. Never even
- talked about LA.
- Parks gets into his car.
- INT. PARKS'S CAR - DAY
- Parks starts his car, his phone still up to his ear.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- Just call him for me, please. I
- really need this info in
- particular.
- JAMES (O.S.)
- Look, I know I barely stand you
- when it comes to cops, but doc is a
- different animal entirely. Worked
- with him or not, he's not going to
- be thrilled you're calling him in
- that capacity.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- Are you okay?
- JAMES (O.S.)
- What?
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- You actually said something sane,
- you're right. Fuck.
- JAMES (O.S.)
- I'm still looking for cat girls.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- Alright then, talk to you later.
- JAMES (O.S.)
- Wait, Dave-
- Parks hangs up the phone, puts his car in gear and goes to
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
- Layla and Elena sit in there.
- Layla sips some tea. Elena is in the kitchen.
- Elena looks back.
- ELENA
- Hey, Dave- What happened?
- PARKS
- I'm gonna rest.
- Parks walks to the couch and sits down. His eyes are ragged
- as he takes a throw pillow next to him and holds it tight.
- Elena scoots over and watches Parks.
- LAYLA
- It wasn't your fault, Dave. You're
- still looking for who got Lance,
- right?
- Parks nods. He opens his mouth to say something, but stops.
- PARKS
- I can't say anything about the
- investigation, sorry.
- Parks carries a troubled look.
- The events of the shootout play out in his mind.
- EXT. DESERT HIGHWAY - NIGHT
- The world is silent.
- He sees the concussion grenade roll in front of him and go
- off.
- Silence.
- The chaos of the world around him stops.
- Parks looks over at Hawkins. Hawkins turns his head with
- black, darkened eyes.
- HAWKINS
- You could've done something, why
- didn't you do anything Dave? THIS
- IS YOUR FAUL-
- ELENA (O.S.)
- Dave!
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
- Parks sits there and shakes. Elena holds him.
- Layla puts her hand on his shoulder.
- LAYLA
- Dave-
- PARKS
- Don't worry about it. I'm sorry.
- LAYLA
- For what?
- PARKS
- It's... I can't talk about it.
- His voice trails off.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I'm sorry, I don't know how to
- explain it. It's my fault Hawkins
- is dead, I should've been cover
- officer, maybe then-
- ELENA
- Nothing would've done anything,
- Dave.
- PARKS
- It doesn't feel that way.
- His phone vibrates.
- ELENA
- Work again?
- Parks nods.
- An e-mail appears:
- Mark.Diaz@gmail.com - Subject: You should be dead.
- Parks opens the e-mail, stands up, and walks away from the
- two.
- He goes into the hallway and sits down.
- LAYLA (O.S.)
- He doesn't seem like he wants to
- talk much.
- ELENA (O.S.)
- He's just processing it, give him

- -But I can.
- Right below, a video file is attached below the report.
- "Security footage .mp4".
- Parks opens the file and a video plays.
- It's Dawn in a set of scrubs.
- PARKS
- What the fuck...
- She looks to her left and right. Dawn approaches Parks's
- body.
- She takes a blue syringe out of her jacket and looks on at
- the IV line hooked up to him.
- Dawn injects it into Parks's IV line, then looks up at the
- camera, wide eyed.
- The footage ends.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- She's the one... Why? The
- investigation... Is she cartel?
- Parks looks down and shakes his head in confusion.
- Parks gets back to work after this and opens up a word
- document, and begins to take screenshots of the IV.
- Parks does all this and puts it in a draft.
- A moment later, Elena opens the door behind him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What's up?
- ELENA
- Was wondering if you wanted to join
- us for dinner.
- Parks cracks a smile.
- PARKS
- Shit, already?
- He checks the time.
- It's 7PM.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Oh. Shit. Already.
- Elena carries a look of annoyance.
- ELENA
- Yeah. Already.
- PARKS
- Sure, I'll eat.
- He grabs his phone off the table and follows her.
- PARKS'S DINING ROOM
- Parks continues to look at his phone.
- A "sent" message appears to Jon.Stanton1983@PPD.gov
- LAYLA
- ...He took me to New York with the
- money he saved up. We walked
- through Central Park and it was the
- happiest I'd been.
- Parks continues to look at his phone for updates from
- Stanton.
- LAYLA (CONT’D)
- He wanted to be a cop after some
- guy tried to mug us. He stepped in
- after a guy walked up to me with a
- revolver...
- ELENA
- What did he do?
- Elena taps Parks on the leg.
- Parks looks up from his phone.
- Layla notices this.
- LAYLA
- He almost got shot trying to keep
- the gun away from me. Next thing I
- knew, two cops were breaking up a
- fight and I had to explain to them
- Lance wasn't the one who started
- anything. They let us go and enjoy
- the rest of our time in New York,
- but after he said he loved it.
- ELENA
- Loved it?
- LAYLA
- The danger. We've been together
- since freshman year of high school.
- Had the worst look on his face when
- the Army turned him down. Said he
- wanted to get shot at and save
- people kinda like your husband
- here.
- PARKS
- Didn't do much of that.
- LAYLA
- He said you were a dick, but that
- he respected you.
- PARKS
- I couldn't save him...
- LAYLA
- You were so good to him! One day,
- he came home and told me about when
- they filled his locker full of
- shaving cream before his shift
- ended.
- Parks chuckles at this.
- PARKS
- I'm aware. I helped with it.
- Layla gives a chuckle at that.
- He just shrugs at this as his phone vibrates.
- The contact reads, "Stanton".
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Hang on, I gotta take this. Sorry.
- He steps outside.
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
- Parks picks takes the call.
- PARKS
- Yeah?
- A different voice enters the speaker.
- STEELE (O.S.)
- Parks, we want you down at the
- station, your union rep is already
- waiting for you.
- PARKS
- (mouthing)
- Fuck...
- Parks rolls his eyes.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Yeah, I'll be on my way.
- He goes back inside.
- PARKS'S DINING ROOM
- Parks comes in with a sigh as he shuts the door behind him.
- He walks over to Elena and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
- PARKS
- They need me back at the station,
- probably nothing.
- Elena cocks an eyebrow at this.
- ELENA
- Alright love, just tell me what's
- going on when you get back.
- PARKS
- I will.
- Parks leaves as the door closes behind him.
- INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT
- Parks walks inside. Steele waits for him alongside Stanton.
- Steele gives a grin to Parks.
- STEELE
- How you doing Dave? Your wound heal
- already?
- Parks gives a look of disgust.
- PARKS
- I'm great. The wound did heal.
- STEELE
- Pretty good looking for someone who
- got shot only days ago.
- Parks gives Stanton a look. Stanton nods at him.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- And I was really moved by what you
- said about your partner.
- PARKS
- Th-Thanks...
- Parks carries a look of suspicion.
- STEELE
- Relax, Dave-
- PARKS
- Cut the shit, why am I here?
- STEELE
- Let's take a walk.
- The three walk together into the
- FORENSICS LAB
- Security footage of the video Parks sent to Stanton.
- STEELE
- You know that lady? You can be
- honest with me, relax.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- Never seen her before.
- STEELE
- Me neither, but I had someone run
- some facial recognition.
- Steele gets on the computer and pulls up a facebook profile
- that reads, "Dawn Michelle Paulsen".
- PARKS
- That's...
- STEELE
- As it turns out, she was at the
- hospital-
- STANTON
- -And posing as a federal agent.
- STEELE
- So you got anything to say about
- that? You were one of the what?
- Lucky 28?
- Parks takes a deep breath and then gives a glare to Steele.
- PARKS
- I don't like talking about what
- happened over there.
- STEELE
- Funnily, she's related to a combat
- medic with the same name with the
- same name. Different spellings
- though.
- PARKS
- What are you saying?
- STEELE
- If you're on someone's payroll, you
- can always come clean. Nothing bad
- will happe-
- PARKS
- I'm not.
- Then tell me about this.
- He pulls up another security tape.
- Parks stands in an elevator, his gun out.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I had a credible lead!
- STEELE
- And you didn't tell us. We get it,
- man.
- PARKS
- I had to make sure!
- Parks carries a look of realization.
- STEELE
- We also have a sworn statement that
- says you took a bribe-
- PARKS
- That's outlandish, the hell?!
- STEELE
- Yup. Come on Parks, we're on your
- side here.
- PARKS
- Where the hell is my union rep? I
- ain't saying shit now.
- STEELE
- Well you're already too far in now.
- Let's get this figured out.
- INTERROGATION ROOM
- Parks sits there.
- The door in front of him opens.
- Nelson walks through.
- NELSON
- You're lucky to still have a job.
- You're free to go, all their
- evidence was circumstantial.
- Nelson moves his mouth next to Parks's ear.
- NELSON (CONT’D)
- (whispering)
- Whatever you're chasing, it better
- be good. These guys are fixing to
- bury you now.
- Parks gives a stunned look.
- PARKS
- Thanks...
- NELSON
- Best of luck. Your friend's outside
- waiting.
- Parks nods at this.
- He walks outside to
- EXT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT
- James sits in Parks's car and smokes a cigarette.
- He looks at Parks and motions for him.
- JAMES
- Come on, I'm taking you home.
- PARKS
- I'm driving, my car.
- JAMES
- That wasn't part of the deal.
- PARKS
- Deal?
- James rolls his eyes.
- JAMES
- Don't fucking worry 'bout it.
- Parks opens his car door and gets in.
- INT. PARKS'S CAR - NIGHT
- PARKS
- Can you not fucking smoke in my
- car? Jesus, you haven't changed.
- He looks at the box of Lucky Strikes in the cupholder.
- JAMES
- You have.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- Whatever, that doesn't fucking
- matter dude. What deal? What did
- they pay you for?
- JAMES
- I'm just supposed to drive you
- home.
- Parks cocks an eyebrow.
- PARKS
- What? That's it? Nelson pai-
- JAMES
- Money got wired into my account.
- They said they'd pay for an Uber
- once I got you to your place.
- James merges onto a highway that reads "I-17 North, Black
- Canyon/Flagstaff".
- His eyes constantly scan the road in front and around him.
- JAMES (CONT’D)
- What I don't know is why this group
- has a vested interest in you, a
- cop.
- PARKS
- Mind if I take a look?
- James takes his phone out of his pocket and holds his free
- hand out for Parks.
- JAMES
- Knock yourself out.
- Parks takes his phone. The glow illuminates James's face as
- Parks looks at the text.
- TEXT
- 5,000 dollars to get your friend
- home. Sincerely, an interested
- party.
- Parks screenshots the text and tabs out to James's home
- screen that shows a harem of cat girls.
- His phone vibrates as he sends the screenshot to himself.
- PARKS
- What made you want to help me?
- JAMES
- Well, disregarding the 5k
- supposedly being transferred into
- my account, and disregarding the
- fact that your position as a cop
- violates the non aggression
- principle- I really want to find
- out whether cat girls are rea-
- PARKS
- Oh my fucking god.
- JAMES
- You'll know. One day, you'll see
- them and question everything you
- know. I would know, I did.
- PARKS
- Look, the day cat girls are real is
- the day I eat my 9mm.
- Police lights flash behind them.
- JAMES
- God fucking damn it.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...Eat my gun... Damn it.
- James pulls the car onto the right shoulder of the freeway.
- Parks looks at the mirror.
- The cars are unmarked Crown Vics.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Wait a fucking second...
- JAMES
- Problem?
- Parks reaches for his Glock.
- The officer on Parks's side steps closer and reveals himself
- full of face tattoos.
- James looks at Parks with wide eyes as he looks to his side.
- The officer's arm is covered with tats.
- PARKS
- DRIVE!
- James puts the car in gear and slams his foot on the gas.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- GO GO GO!
- The one approaching runs back to his car as the other two
- cars pursue.
- James watches the rear view mirror and pulls out his phone,
- then turns the volume knob all the way up.
- A grin materializes on James's face.
- Running in the 90s by Dave Rodgers plays on the radio.
- JAMES
- Let's do this...
- The highway in front of them stands empty as two of the
- cruisers try to catch up.
- James turns the car to the right and takes an exit.
- Parks watches behind him as the cruisers follow the two.
- James looks down at the transmission.
- JAMES (CONT’D)
- Fuckin' automatic... PIECE OF SHIT!
- The cruisers behind follow even closer.
- James slows the car down and hangs a right turn right before
- traffic starts.
- The cruisers behind the two screech to halt.
- One makes it through and continues to tail the two.
- Parks gets his phone out and dials 911.
- He puts the phone to his ear. He looks at his phone.
- PARKS
- I got no reception!
- JAMES
- Got it!
- The cruiser continues to follow.
- James looks at the road around him as it tails them.
- Parks raises his handgun and raises it toward the cruiser.
- PARKS
- I don't think I can do this James!
- JAMES
- I DON'T THINK THEY AGREE, DAVE!
- The cruiser pulls further away from the two and then comes
- back to ram them.
- Parks takes a breath as he watches the other guy pull out his
- gun.
- Parks's eyes widen.
- James slams the brakes and watches the other car crash into a
- wall.
- The two watch as both of them get out of the car dressed in
- Phoenix Police uniforms.
- PARKS
- Christ...
- James guns the engine and continues to drive forward.
- JAMES
- Who did you piss off Dave?
- Parks looks behind him and holsters his handgun.
- PARKS
- I don't know. I don't.
- JAMES
- Christ. I might be fucking nuts for
- chasing cat girls, but at least
- people have the common decency not
- to shoot me over them! Then again,
- if they do, they probably are real
- and someone's covering it up.
- Parks sits back in his seat and takes a deep breath. James
- turns off the music.
- PARKS
- Do you hear yourself right now? Are
- you this self-aware?
- James just shrugs and makes a right turn into Parks's
- neighborhood.
- JAMES
- Whoever is chasing you, you and I
- both need them dead.
- PARKS
- Wait, wait, wait. You're gonna
- fucking kill them?
- JAMES
- I mean, yeah, why not?
- PARKS
- We need them alive-
- JAMES
- You saw what happens when you
- spring them in jail, some fucking
- fed bails them out. This is how I'm
- doing this. If it weren't for me,
- those guys would've blown your
- fuckin' brains out!
- Parks sits there and sighs.
- PARKS
- If those were real cops...
- JAMES
- They weren't. You made the right
- call Dave.
- James makes another turn.
- PARKS
- I don't think I'm very good at
- that.
- JAMES
- You were better than any MP
- stateside or in country. I mean,
- choice wise. You were shit at your
- job.
- PARKS
- I didn't care. Those guys were
- fucking retards.
- JAMES
- Thanks for giving me my pressure
- cooker back. We're even now and I
- get five grand.
- PARKS
- Whatever works for you dude.
- The car makes another turn into
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
- James's hatchback sits outside the house. The lights are on
- inside.
- INT. PARKS'S GARAGE - NIGHT
- The car pulls into the garage.
- James sighs.
- JAMES
- Dave. Rest. Just do that. I get
- paid, you solve your case. I go
- find my cat girls.
- Parks just chuckles.
- PARKS
- Fuck, dude.
- The two get out.
- James tosses Parks his keys.
- JAMES
- Fucking rest dude. They'll still be
- out there trust me. The bad guys
- always are.
- PARKS
- You are something else, you know
- that?
- James shrugs.
- JAMES
- We're all the main characters in
- our own stories, Dave.
- Parks just shoots a confused look.
- PARKS
- What?!
- James lights up a cigarette and gets into his car.
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
- Parks comes home.
- PARKS
- Hey, sweetheart.
- He passes out on the couch.
- Elena walks over with a blanket. She holds Parks and pulls
- the blanket up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- (exhausted)
- I need to fucking rest.
- INT. POLICE STATION - DAY
- SUPERIMPOSE: THREE DAYS LATER
- Parks has the metal briefcase on his desk and scans different
- documents onto it. He looks refreshed, his eyes look rested.
- Parks has a lollipop in his mouth.
- Nelson walks over to Parks's desk and watches him.
- NELSON
- How was your break Parks?
- PARKS
- Can't complain. It was good, yeah.
- NELSON
- No trouble?
- PARKS
- None at all.
- Parks gives Nelson a grin.
- NELSON
- Any leads?
- PARKS
- I got one. Looks like someone I
- think I might know. I have to make
- sure though.
- Nelson gives him a nod.
- NELSON
- Keep at it then.
- Parks looks at a file folder.
- "Dawn Michelle Paulsen", Knight Pharmaceuticals Employee
- #4382
- PARKS
- Doc?
- Parks opens up the file.
- A mugshot of Dawn falls out of the file.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Arrested for selling and possession
- in 2010 by the Santa Barbara PD.
- Parks goes back to his computer.
- With one hand, he pulls the security footage up on his
- computer.
- He sets the file down next to the keyboard and picks the
- photo of Dawn up.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Got nothing to fucking link them
- with...
- His eyes widen.
- Parks takes out his phone. He looks through his contacts.
- "Doc, contact in case of emergency" sits as one of the
- contacts there.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Fuck, man... Worst I can be is
- wrong, right?
- He looks at the contact for a moment.
- Parks looks down in discomfort as he looks at the phone. He
- puts it down and gets on his computer.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Maybe I can just...
- He gets on his computer and searches up her name on Facebook.
- "Dawn Michelle Paulsen" appears in the search bar.
- He sifts through the results.
- "Dawn Paulsen, Doctor at Knight Pharmaceuticals - Corporate"
- shows up as one of the results.
- He clicks it and finds her profile is public.
- Parks scrolls through it and stops on a post.
- Dawn stands among a group of other doctors in a corporate
- photo. Parks saves this photo and prints it out, then places
- it on top of a scanner.
- With a deep breath, he looks up the address.
- He gets it, stands up, puts his gun on, and makes his way
- out.
- He gets in his car and drives across a highway to
- EXT. CORPORATE BUILDING - DAY
- The building bustles with activity. Delivery trucks enter as
- people head home.
- Others head inside to start their day, as others sit outside
- as they smoke cigarettes.
- One sits with his lunch out and watches the cars pass.
- Parks pulls up in an unmarked Crown Victoria.
- He lowers the window and flashes his badge at the security
- guard at the door.
- PARKS
- Howdy there, Detective Parks,
- Phoenix Police Department. I need
- to speak with a Dawn Paulsen.
- The security guard looks up this name.
- SECURITY GUARD 1
- Paulsen, Paulsen...
- PARKS
- You're looking for Doctor Paulsen,
- right?
- Parks nods.
- SECURITY GUARD
- Got it. See the receptionist when
- you get inside.
- The guard lifts the gate.
- IND SECURITY GUARD 1
- Go on in.
- Parks pulls inside
- CUT TO:
- INT. KNIGHT PHARMACEUTICALS ENTRANCE - DAY
- Parks flashes his badge at two security guards.
- PARKS
- Detective Parks, Phoenix Police.
- They let him through.
- Parks walks over to the receptionist.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Looking for a Dawn-
- DAWN
- Detective!
- DAWN PAULSEN, (32) walks over, a clipboard in hand.
- She sets it down.
- PARKS
- Miss Paulsen? Let's just cut to the
- chase here.
- She stands there, attentive.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Where were you four nights ago?
- Dawn looks down. Her eyes widen.
- DAWN
- Look, I had no other choice, I was
- roped in with him.
- PARKS
- That's good to hear. Turn around,
- hands on the back of your head.
- She does what Parks says.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Interlace your fingers. Anything on
- you I should worry about?
- DAWN
- No, but they're gonna kill me.
- Don't you realize that?
- Parks searches her.
- PARKS
- Maybe you should think about these
- things before you get into 'em,
- huh?
- He places the cuffs on her.
- DAWN
- This is the safest place for me to
- be, Parks. You're making a mistake.
- The two move towards the exit.
- PARKS
- You know what was a mistake? Not
- bothering to let me or anyone know
- what the hell is going on. I don't
- know what's going on.
- DAWN
- And that's for the best!
- PARKS
- Who killed Officer Hawkins? Where's
- Torres's body? Work with me here.
- She goes quiet. Dawn opens her mouth.
- The two move outside.
- EXT. CORPORATE BUILDING - DAY
- Parks puts her in the backseat of the cruiser.
- DAWN
- You're going to get me killed,
- Parks. You don't know what you're
- up against here. This is bigger
- than you and my brother.
- Parks gets into the driver's seat.
- INT. UNMARKED POLICE CRUISER - DAY
- Parks chuckles.
- PARKS
- Really? And who is this brother of
- yours?
- He turns the ignition.
- DAWN
- Donovan Paulsen? "The Hero of
- Houston". If you ask me, he's more
- of a war criminal for supporting
- the American imperialist regime-
- Parks closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
- PARKS
- Shut up.
- He goes silent. His hands clutch the steering wheel.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Fuck.
- Parks massages his eyes.
- DAWN
- Surprised you couldn't have put two
- and two together there, detective.
- PARKS
- Son of a bitch...
- He looks back at her and takes a deep breath.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Miss Paulsen, at this time you have
- the right to remain silent,
- anything you say can and will be
- used against you in a court of law,
- you have the right to an attorney,
- if you cannot afford one, one will
- be appointed to you, do you
- understand these rights as they've
- been read?
- DAWN
- Yeah. Fine. You'll be talking to my
- lawyers soon.
- She sits back in silence.
- Parks drives forward.
- PARKS
- 1532, dispatch, show us en route to
- station, one suspect in custody.
- DAWN
- You're gonna get me killed!
- Parks rolls his eyes and continues to drive forward.
- EXT. CITY - DAY

- about their lives.
- The car stops at an intersection.
- INT. POLICE CRUISER - DAY
- The car pulls forward. Dawn sits in the back. She looks out
- the side of the cruiser.
- Her eyes widen.
- DAWN
- DETECTIVE PARKS-
- The car gets rammed on the driver's side. Parks's airbag
- deploys as his head slams into the steering wheel. The
- windshield is busted.
- The cruiser goes into a spin.
- It stops in the middle of the intersection.
- Parks's head is in the airbag. Blood drips down from his
- head.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1 (O.S.)
- Be advised, securing the package.
- An arm reaches over and the car unlocks.
- Parks tries to take off his seatbelt.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 2
- HE'S MOVING!
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Cease fi-
- Parks opens his eyes, looks forward, and watches the muzzle

- A scream comes from the back.
- DAWN (O.S.)
- PARKS!
- Dawn gets dragged out and a cloth sack gets put over her
- head.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Jesus fuck I just shot a cop...
- Behind the cruiser, Dawn gets thrown into the back of a
- minivan.
- The door closes and the minivan drives off.
- EXT. CITY - DAY
- Parks opens the door and falls out of the cruiser. He groans
- in pain as he takes his gun out. A cut sits on his head.
- The minivan is long gone, what remains is Parks's smashed
- cruiser which sits in ruin next to the pickup truck. Glass
- and metal from both cars line the street.
- Parks tries to stand up and looks around that cityscape
- around him.
- He coughs up once again and falls over.
- Parks unbuttons his shirt and opens it. He looks at the hole
- made by the 12 gauge shell.
- Sirens in the distance.
- Parks crawls back into his cruiser and takes out his radio's
- handset.
- PARKS

- Parks cocks an eyebrow.
- PARKS
- Weren't you fixing to bury me?
- Steele shakes his head.
- STEELE
- I needed to scratch out all the

- STEELE
- Keep your friend James out of

- MATTHEWS
- He is, wouldn't have him here
- otherwise.
- Jackie looks up at Parks.
- JACKIE
- Been awhile, hasn't it Dave? Last

- Parks glances behind him at Matthews.
- PARKS
- And what do you got going on here
- Matthews?
- Matthews shoots him a grin.
- MATTHEWS

- PARKS
- Right.
- He goes to pick his notepad up and watches Matthews.

- He motions to Jackie.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- Detective Miller, could you clue

- get them to pull over in a marked
- SUV. Any questions?
- Parks raises his hand.
- PARKS
- You know I just got shot, right?
- MILLER
- Don't worry about it, it'll be a
- quick one. We get the kids, you
- become a hero, what's the worst
- that could happen?
- Parks's eyes widen.
- PARKS
- A lot, actually Detective. I'm sure
- you know that in this line of work.
- MILLER
- We have all our bases covered here,
- Parks.
- PARKS
- Sure we do.
- Parks stands up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- If that's everything, I'm gonna get

- Jackie rolls down the window to the SUV.
- MILLER
- You're not gonna need that!
- Parks starts putting magazines in his plate carrier pouches.

- that's fine you know.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- I got this shit.
- He takes his rifle then checks his watch.
- The truck drives by.

- PARKS
- Get down!
- The two take cover.
- Jackie drops the handset. More gun shots ring out.

- Parks peaks over as smoke clouds appear in front of him.
- Rounds begin to bounce off the metal of the cruiser as Parks
- tries to peek out.
- The driver's side of the truck opens. Two figures in fatigues

- PARKS
- What the hell?
- The rounds pass Parks's head.
- JACKIE
- Parks, they're moving!
- PARKS
- I got it!
- Parks runs forward into the smoke. He fires back at the

- JACKIE
- PARKS YOU FUCKING IDIOT!
- Parks charges through the smoke. His rifle points forward. He
- turns the light on it and spots two as they run into a

- past him. Parks takes cover behind a parking lot pillar.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- We need the two Army guys dead!
- Parks watches three of them get out of the van. The van
- drives away and down the ramp.
- PARKS
- (radio)
- You got a van on its way down
- there, stop it! White Ford van!
- Parks crouches down and peers out with his rifle. He moves to
- cover while he does so. The militia soldiers wear all black
- with black pants, balaclavas, and boots.
- One goes down as Parks takes aim and a round goes through his
- skull. The other two begin to fire at Parks. One charges at
- him while the other keeps him pinned behind the car.
- Parks waits for an opening.
- He peers out as the guy who was charging him starts to change
- his magazine. Parks peeks out, fires two into his chest and
- one in his skull.
- He falls down, dead.
- Parks listens for a moment.
- The sound of boots echoes through the garage. Parks peeks out

- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Come on, big guy.
- Parks's rifle is slung in front of him. His handgun raised
- forward, he makes his way down the staircase and makes his
- way down.
- An open window sits at the bottom of the stairwell. Next to
- it, a lone shotgun with the shells scattered around it.
- Parks looks out the window and keys his radio.
- PARKS (CONT’D)

- A groan comes from the other end.
- TURNER (O.S.)

- to JAMESON, (mid-30s).
- Jameson talks into a radio.
- JAMESON
- Negative, send units behind the
- building across from us and have
- them go around!
- He looks over at Parks.
- PARKS
- You see a guy in camo running away?
- !
- He nods.
- JAMESON
- Yeah, went down the alleyway!
- Parks peeks his head out for a moment, only to have rounds
- nearly strike him in the face.
- He goes back to Jameson.
- PARKS
- Christ. I think I'm gonna try and
- head him off.
- JAMESON
- You going to be good?
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- I can take care of myself.
- Parks makes a run toward the back of the reception office,
- the sound of gunfire goes off behind him.
- He goes to

- It's open.
- He looks back at the dumpster.
- PARKS (CONT’D)

- Alright- Alright, you see him?
- Turner shakes his head.
- TURNER
- Yeah, he was wearing a green mask-
- Had brown eyes, black hair,
- Caucasian.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- Bodycam rolling?
- Turner nods.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Come on then, let's go get that
- truck open. See if the tip was
- legit.
- The two walk to
- EXT. STREET - NIGHT
- The two step out of the alley. A prisoner transport sits
- there as multiple ambulances take wounded away. The street is
- blocked off as Homeland Security agents and uniformed Phoenix
- officers take photos of the crime scene.
- Uniformed police officers herd
- Down the street, cameras flash as officers keep the media at
- a distance.
- Two agents in suits, a man and a woman stand there and guard
- the cargo of the truck.
- Parks looks over at Turner.
- PARKS
- Feeling okay?
- TURNER
- Yeah, I'm good man.
- The Phoenix SWAT team stands there
- PARKS
- You keep a set of bolt cutters in

- Turner nods.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Get 'em for me.
- TURNER
- You got it, detective.
- Turner runs back to his cruiser.
- Jackie walks over.
- JACKIE
- Feds are taking over Parks, we've
- done our job.
- Turner takes the bolt cutters out of his car. He makes his
- way back.
- PARKS
- That's bullshit and we both know
- it, Detective Miller. The feds from
- what I've been fucking seeing
- always fucking take over. Our
- fucking turn.
- Turner comes back with the bolt cutters. Parks takes the bolt
- cutters from him. The two agents continue to guard the
- truck's cargo hold and watch Parks.
- Parks watches them.
- JACKIE
- We're here to do a job-
- PARKS
- AND THAT'S TO SEE IF THIS TIP WAS
- BULLSHIT, IS IT FUCKING NOT?! Isn't
- it our job to have some level of
- accountability with these-
- Parks points to the two agents that guard the truck.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...Pretentious...
- Parks walks forward and readies the bolt cutters.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...Lying....
- He walks closer to the truck.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...Shrewd...
- The two agents protect the back of the truck and stand backed
- up against it.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- FUCKS!
- Parks reaches between the two agents with the bolt cutters
- and cut the lock off.
- The female punches him in the face and causes him to stagger
- back. The male agent tackles him to the ground.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- OPEN THE TRUCK, OPEN THE FUCKING
- TRUCK GOD DAMN IT!
- Jameson looks over at Parks on the ground.
- JAMESON
- Get your fucking hands off him!
- Turner pulls the female back, only to take an elbow to the
- shoulder. The woman breaks free, only for Turner to tackle
- her down.
- Jackie pulls the male agent off of Parks, knocking him off
- balance. She locks his arms in a hold and throws him to the
- ground.
- Parks gets back on his feet, takes out his sidearm, then
- takes the lock off with his free hand.
- He gets the container open.
- Darkness.
- Parks takes a light out from his pocket and turns it on.

- A few give terrified looks from where they are.
- IND CHILD 1
- Police... Officer...?
- Parks reaches into his pocket for a wallet.
- He pulls out his badge and points to it.
- The kids recoil back in fear.
- Parks backs away and makes his way down. He looks over at

- EXT. STREET - NIGHT
- PARKS
- Get the fucking Red Cross out here.
- The two agents that attacked Parks are pinned to the ground.
- Matthews walks over.
- MATTHEWS
- Officers, release my men.
- TURNER
- Screw you, they attacked one of
- ours, I got it on video!
- MATTHEWS
- You're right. You know what else is
- on video? Losing your firearm to a
- dangerous suspect, that's worthy of
- you losing your badge Officer
- Turner.
- TURNER
- Yeah, and you're a fed the hell you
- gotta do with that?
- MATTHEWS
- Consider yourself fired then,
- Officer Turner.
- Matthews turns over to Parks.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- As for you, Detective Parks.
- Matthews looks at him.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- Expect a suspension for striking
- one of my agents.
- PARKS
- Fuck you, Matthews. Anytime I find
- something, Homeland always seems to
- suddenly be interested in it.
- What's so interesting about these
- kids?
- MATTHEWS
- That's a bit above your paygrade,
- detective.
- PARKS
- Always fucking is.
- Parks walks off in anger but stops as he watches two Homeland

- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Homeland...
- FLASHBACK
- EXT. STREET - NIGHT
- The black suburbans.
- "DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY" jackets flash through
- Parks's mind.
- MARK (O.S.)
- Well Torres is dead. Someone did
- you a favor, my man. Seems like the
- responding officers can't seem to
- get their radios working, so they
- had to use their personal phones to
- call up the coroner. Better meet
- 'em there.
- END FLASHBACK.
- PARKS
- Oh, no, no, no, no...
- He runs back into
- INT. RECEPTION ROOM - NIGHT
- He checks behind the reception desk.
- Nick isn't there.
- PARKS
- Oh, fuck.
- Parks runs out to

- CONRAD
- Lawyer.
- Parks's eyes widen.
- Nick gets loaded into the back of a black van.
- PARKS
- Oh, christ.
- Parks runs over to Jackie.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I need to talk to your suspect.
- Conrad's eyes widen in shock.
- JACKIE
- Sure, but-
- PARKS
- Fucking, nothing!
- Parks pushes her out of the way and looks at the black van
- with government plates. He closes the door
- JACKIE
- Hey, what the fuck Parks?
- Parks goes into
- INT. POLICE SUV - NIGHT
- Parks buckles Conrad's seatbelt. He throws his rifle into the
- seat next to him.
- Parks starts the SUV and drives forward.
- He watches the black van drive off and follows behind it.
- CONRAD
- The fucking Chink, bailing my ass
- out. What did I do to deserve this?
- PARKS
- I'm keeping you from getting your
- brains blown out. You still float
- with that reporter?
- Parks reaches over and takes the dashcam off the mount.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Hold that. Burn it when you get the
- chance.
- He continues to trail the black van.
- Parks passes the handcuff keys to Conrad.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- There's a guy in that black van.
- Can you get him out?
- CONRAD
- That fucking limey?
- Parks moves the rear passenger's side mirror.
- PARKS
- Yes, that fucking limey.
- CONRAD
- I don't fucking know him.
- PARKS
- Can you cut the bullshit for once?
- It doesn't take a genius to figure
- out if you and him are there, that
- someone who got all of us out of
- hell got themselves into more
- trouble. As to be expected.
- Conrad looks down and sighs.
- CONRAD
- Fuck, fine.
- PARKS
- One more thing.
- CONRAD
- Yeah?
- PARKS
- The female Paulsen.
- Conrad shakes his head.
- CONRAD
- Fuck if I know.
- PARKS
- Damn it.
- Parks continues to follow the van.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Act handcuffed for a sec.
- He turns on the lights and sirens.
- The van makes a turn, then stops.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Act like you're handcuffed. Once I
- get them out of their car, grab
- him, grab the cruiser and go.
- CONRAD
- 10-4, copper.
- Parks unlocks the car doors.
- EXT. STREET - NIGHT
- Parks steps out of his cruiser. He makes his way over, his

- PARKS
- Howdy there sir, how you doing
- tonight?
- The driver flashes his Homeland Security badge.
- IND AGENT 1
- Not too good now that you've pulled
- us over.
- Parks clicks his tongue.
- PARKS
- Well damn, sorry to hear that. I'm
- gonna need you two to step out of
- the vehicle in either case. Your
- plates match the vehicle of a
- murder suspect my division's been
- tracking.
- IND AGENT 1
- Excuse me?
- Parks sighs and gives a tired chuckle.
- PARKS
- Yeah, it's been a long night for me
- too man.
- The agent in the passenger's seat gives a look of confusion.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Please exit the vehicle.
- IND AGENT 1
- What the hell are you talking about
- I just-
- Parks's expression changes to that of sheer annoyance.
- PARKS
- GET OUT OR I DRAG YOU OUT.
- The door next to him opens as the agent steps out of the van.
- IND AGENT 1
- What's your name, detective? You've
- got no acceptable basis for this
- stop and we both know it! Now give
- me your badge number!
- PARKS
- Detective Parks, Human Trafficking
- Division, badge 91859, 24th Street
- Precinct.
- IND AGENT 1
- You lousy brat-
- PARKS
- I'm just doing what I'm told sir.
- IND AGENT 1
- What? You know what I can do to
- you- To your career son?
- The group are positioned in front of the van.
- Parks moves so they face away from it.
- The two begin to stand above Parks.
- Parks watches the back of the van open up as Conrad carries
- Nick outside the van.
- Conrad picks him up and carries him to the cruiser.
- PARKS
- Fucking take your best shot, bitch.
- The agent gets ready to swing-
- Only for the tires to the cruiser to screech as the SUV
- screams past the three.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Oh, fuck!
- He watches the SUV drive off.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Well-
- The two agents give him opposing glares.
- INT. OFFICE - DAY
- PARKS
- That was that.
- Stanton looks at Parks, jaw dropped.
- STANTON
- Did you eat paint as a child Parks?
- He put a gun to your head so
- instead of crashing the car you did
- what he said?
- PARKS
- I was scared, sir.
- STANTON
- Your badge and gun, Parks.
- Parks takes them out and passes them to him.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- A month's suspension, you're lucky
- to still be getting paid while we
- investigate this. Starting a fight
- with two federal agents, leaving a
- scene before investigators can
- arrive, and then proceeding to pick
- another fight with Homeland?
- Stanton shakes his head.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- You are a lucky man to still be
- allowed to have a job here.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- I'm sorry sir. Thank you, sir.
- STANTON
- Get the hell outta my office.
- Parks nods as he walks out to
- INT. POLICE STATION - DAY
- Jackie stands there and waits.
- Parks closes the door behind him.
- PARKS
- The hell do you want?
- JACKIE
- Interesting how two unknown
- suspects disappear on your watch.
- Nick Fletcher and Conrad Miller?
- Parks just shrugs.
- PARKS
- Never actually caught their names,
- actually.
- Jackie scratches her chin.
- JACKIE
- Mmhmm. Interesting. Strange how
- those names have come up after all
- these years, isn't it? It's like we
- were just having dinner as couples
- again.
- Parks walks over to his desk. He takes some of his notes with
- him.
- PARKS
- Turner gone?
- Jackie nods.
- JACKIE
- Poor guy.
- PARKS
- Real fuckin' shame.
- Parks starts to take notes out of his desk. He walks by
- Turner's desk.
- It sits empty.
- Parks takes a moment to look at it, the notes in his hand.
- He walks over to the exit.
- CUT TO:
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - DAY
- Elena sleeps on the couch as Parks comes in.
- PARKS
- Hi, Elena.
- Parks drops to the floor, passes out, and falls asleep.
- He wakes up at
- PARKS'S BEDROOM
- Elena holds him tight.
- Parks blinks and wakes up, Elena next to him.
- PARKS
- Hey, baby.
- ELENA
- Why didn't you tell me Dave? And
- what the hell is gash on your face?
- PARKS
- It's part of the job and I didn't
- want you to worry about me. Got
- into another fight while working,
- they got me suspended for the next
- month.
- ELENA
- Worry? Worry is all I've been doing
- since Lance died! Is part of the
- job also being a lone wolf thinking
- that no one has your back?
- PARKS
- How was I supposed to know that
- Doc's sister had people after her?
- Besides, PD got into a little fight
- with the feds after what I found.
- Parks gets up and massages his face.
- ELENA
- And what would that have been?
- PARKS
- Truck full of kids being shipped to
- god knows where.
- Parks yawns.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Been fuckin' awake for four days.
- Jesus.
- ELENA
- Yeah, I can tell. When was the last
- time you showered?
- Parks just shakes his head.
- PARKS
- Four days ago.
- She points to the shower.
- ELENA
- Go.
- Parks gets up and goes into the bathroom.
- He closes the door behind him, only for Elena to follow
- behind.
- CUT TO:
- PARKS'S KITCHEN
- Parks brews himself a cup of coffee.
- He wears a pair of shorts and a "101st Airborne" T-shirt.
- Elena wears a bathrobe and kisses him on the cheek.
- She wraps her arms around his stomach.
- ELENA
- Dave?
- Parks looks at her.
- PARKS
- Yeah?
- ELENA
- It feels like...
- She looks down.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- ...Feels like you're going back
- overseas again.
- Parks sighs.
- PARKS
- I gotta do this. Elena I haven't
- been completely upfront with you.
- Parks turns around.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I'm working a case and it's Don.
- Elena looks into Parks's eyes.
- ELENA
- Sweetheart, what did he do this
- time?
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- That's the problem, I don't think
- he did anything. That's what
- worries me. Whoever-
- Parks shakes his head again.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Someone's fixing to bury him and
- they were gonna kill two of Don's
- friends for it to happen. I don't
- even know the why of it all,
- normally Don pisses someone off or
- he...
- Parks looks up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...comes across something he
- shouldn't have...
- Parks's eyes widen.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Oh my god.
- ELENA
- Dave?
- PARKS
- I've seen Matthews before. I've
- seen that rat bastard before!
- ELENA
- Matthews?
- Parks lets off a nervous chuckle.
- PARKS
- I've seen that fucking face before.
- He's not a Homeland...
- Parks goes into his bedroom.
- A file cabinet sits next to his computer.
- Right next to it, a brown office box labelled "Army".
- Parks begins to dig through it. He looks through old Army
- photos.
- He stops on one.
- Parks gets pinned a "Staff Sergeant" rank pinned to his
- uniform.
- Matthews stands next to him and wears a blue polo T-shirt, a
- pair of tan cargo pants, and a pair of tan boots with a Rolex
- watch.
- COLONEL MICHAEL WALLACE, (mid-50s) pins the rank on Parks.
- Parks takes out his notepad.
- "Colonel Wallace" and "Marcus Matthews".
- He jots one more note into it.
- "Who is Marcus Matthews?"
- ELENA
- Back to work, are we?
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- Fuck yeah, we are.
- ELENA
- Don't you have anyone you can call,
- Dave? People care about you, yet
- you insist on constantly trying to
- do things alone and your way! What
- if you're wrong?
- Parks cocks an eyebrow.
- PARKS
- Since when have I been wrong?
- ELENA
- Transporting Don's sister would be
- a good start.
- PARKS
- That was... Yeah, that was a bad
- idea. How was I supposed to know
- that people were after her?
- Elena just shrugs.
- ELENA
- Didn't they tell you to call for
- backup before you did stupid shit
- like that?
- PARKS
- It's different, Elena.
- ELENA
- What's different, Dave?!
- Parks looks away, then back at her.
- PARKS
- I don't want the same shit that
- happened to Hawkins, to happen to
- someone else!
- ELENA
- I fucking knew it!
- PARKS
- Elena-
- ELENA
- This is what's wrong, Dave!
- Parks stands up.
- PARKS
- What's wrong, Elena? The fact I'd
- rather be dead rather than some
- poor guy with a family?!
- ELENA
- Those guys signed up for a job, and
- they know the risks! This hero
- bullshit that you think is out to
- help those closest to you only
- serves to fuck you in the end! What
- if one day someone shoots you and
- leaves you out in the desert?! What
- then Dave?! End up like Hank from
- Breaking Bad, and maybe I get that
- phone call that no one knows where
- you are. You're missing while your
- buddy buries you under 20 feet of
- sand! Tell me what I'm supposed to
- do then!
- Parks goes quiet.
- PARKS
- Elena, who am I supposed to call?
- ELENA
- Baby, you know more than I do that
- those guys would do anything for
- you and that you'd do anything for
- them.
- PARKS
- They're the reason I'm suspended,
- Elena.
- ELENA
- Then even more reason for you to
- find them. Dave, I love you so god
- damn much but there's a point in
- time where it's okay to ask for
- help. People care about you, Dave.
- Parks nods at this.
- PARKS
- Get me my shotgun.
- ELENA
- What?
- PARKS
- Fine, we'll do it your way, Elena.
- Elena goes into the walk in closet and comes out with a 12
- gauge in her hand.
- ELENA
- What are you doing?
- PARKS
- Calling some friends.
- Parks stands up and walks over to his phone. Parks picks it
- up and scrolls through his contacts, then scrolls past
- "Conrad" and stops on "Don".
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Sweetheart, are you sure this is a
- good idea?
- Elena nods at him.
- ELENA
- Only one way to know for sure,
- right?
- Parks stops on Don's contact name.
- He takes a deep breath and dials the number.
- The line rings for a moment as he steps out into the living
- room.
- Elena turns on the TV.
- TV POV
- IND REPORTER 1
- Police are looking for what they
- are dubbing "The Gentleman Car
- thief", the victim, 43-year old
- Brenda Johnson describes what she
- saw.
- BRENDA
- He came up and pointed the gun at
- me and asked, "Ma'am may I take
- your car?" so I said to him, "Boy,
- you got a gun in my face, am I
- supposed to say no?"
- The camera cuts back to the reporter on TV.
- IND REPORTER 1

- remind the public that if they see
- him to call police immediately.
- BACK TO:
- PARKS
- Mother of fuck.
- Parks scrolls through his phone contacts and stops on Don.
- He takes a deep breath and dials the number.
- Parks waits for a moment.
- The line connects. DON, (30) picks up the phone.
- DON (O.S.)
- Dave?
- PARKS
- If that was you running away from
- me, why'd you need to steal a car?
- DON
- Checkpoint got in the way.
- PARKS
- They wouldn't have gotten you.
- DON
- Didn't want James going to jail.
- PARKS
- Not his first time in though, is
- it?
- Don chuckles over the mic.
- DON (O.S.)
- This your way of coaxing me to come
- back and turn myself in?
- PARKS
- If that was the case, how'd Nick
- and Conrad go free?
- DON (O.S.)
- (mockingly)
- I'm gettin' too old for this shit.
- That fucker still hasn't changed.
- CONRAD (O.S.)
- (distant)
- Hey, fuck you arthritis is a
- serious thing!
- The three chuckle at that.
- Parks grins and sits against his couch. A sigh comes from the
- other end of the phone.
- DON (O.S.)
- How've you been man? Sorry about
- never having kept up with shit.
- PARKS (O.S.)
- (into phone)
- Shit's going. Only, it's been
- crazy.
- DON (O.S.)
- (into phone)
- Yeah, heard about your partner.
- Sorry man.
- Parks sighs and massages his head.
- PARKS
- (into phone)
- Part of the job, man. There was a
- lot more to his case than I thought
- there was.
- Don chuckles at that.
- DON
- There was a lot more to this job
- than I thought there was. Jackie
- and I ain't together.
- PARKS (O.S.)
- (into phone)
- I could tell, she wasn't wearing
- her ring.
- DON
- Bitch got me, that's why.
- Parks stands up and looks out his window.
- Parks gives a smile. Two men sit across the street from his
- house in an unmarked Dodge Charger.
- One snaps a picture on his phone.
- PARKS
- Hey Doc.
- DON
- Yeah Dave?
- He watches two agents snap photos of his house.
- PARKS
- James there?
- DON
- They watching your place now?
- PARKS
- Took the words outta my mouth.
- DON
- He's a little busy right now. Can
- it wait?
- PARKS
- I can take care of it.
- DON
- You sure buddy?
- Parks takes a second and looks at the two.
- PARKS
- You know, on second thought- You
- able to come by?
- DON
- Yeah, I can do that. Give me an
- hour. James should be done too.
- A metallic thud comes from the other end of the mic.
- PARKS
- The hell was that?
- DON (O.S.)
- (into phone)
- Don't worry about it.
- PARKS
- Sure, man.
- DON (O.S.)
- (phone)
- See you on the flip side,
- Specialist Parks.
- PARKS
- You too, Don.
- The line goes out.
- Parks sighs and massages his eyes, then buries his head in
- his hands.
- He looks back out at the car parked near his house.
- Parks grabs his phone again. He looks outside once more.
- He scrolls over a contact that reads, "IA".
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Fuck, here we go.
- He opens up the contact, his finger hovers over the call
- button.
- He presses it, then puts the phone up to his ear.
- STEELE (O.S.)
- Sergeant Steele, Internal Affairs.
- PARKS
- This is Detective Parks.
- STEELE (O.S.)
- You got a lot of nerve calling this
- number, Detective. Aren't you on
- suspension?
- Parks takes a deep breath.
- PARKS
- I-I am. But I need your help.
- STEELE
- What could I possibly do for you
- detective?
- PARKS
- I have a two man team posted
- outside my house and I'm trying to
- figure out whether it's one of
- ours.
- STEELE
- Why would there be a...
- Papers shuffle around a desk. Some typing from a keyboard can
- be heard.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- I'm gonna send a unit to check it
- out. You stay there, Parks.
- PARKS
- Yes, sergeant.
- Parks sighs and looks down.
- Parks reaches into his pocket and takes a couple pain
- killers.
- His phone vibrates.
- The contact reads, "Reporter".
- He takes a deep breath and winces.
- REPORTER (TEXT)

- my place and take a look.
- An address sits attached to the e-mail:

- Parks stands up and takes a breath.
- PARKS (TEXT)
- Omw.
- Parks gets up and glances out the window. A cruiser pulls up

- The cruiser's lights come on as he goes into
- PARKS'S BEDROOM
- Elena does her hair.
- PARKS
- Elena, sweetheart, hey-
- She turns around.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Don and a few others are gonna be
- here soon, let 'em in when they
- come by. I gotta go meet up with a
- friend to see what's going on.
- She nods at him. Parks gives her a kiss on the cheek.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I'm doing it your way now, baby.
- Elena smiles at this and kisses him on the lips back.
- ELENA
- Go get 'em, Dave.
- Parks nods and opens the safe to his Glock 17. He reaches for
- his shotgun, checks it, then loads it.
- Parks steps away.
- ELENA (CONT’D)

- Parks's eyes widen.
- PARKS
- Dave, it's me!
- DIAZ
- ...Fuck your faggot ass... GONNA
- STICK IT IN!
- Parks raises his handgun.
- PARKS
- Mark, it's me!
- Parks opens the door and gets tackled by Diaz. His gun gets
- knocked away.
- Diaz holds a knife in his hand.
- DIAZ
- PIECE OF SHIT!
- Diaz tackles Parks down and knocks his handgun away. Diaz

- The two train their guns on the body.
- Parks stands back up.
- Parks gets his gun out again.
- JACKIE
- Parks, what are you doing?
- PARKS
- There was something wrong with his
- wrists.
- Parks walks forward, his gun stays on the body.
- Parks looks at Diaz's wrists, then feels them.
- JACKIE
- What the hell are you doing, Parks?
- !
- PARKS
- Rope burn. He was tied up.
- Parks keeps his weapon up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Help me clear the house!
- The three move in on the house.
- INT. DIAZ'S HOUSE - DAY

- JACKIE
- Clear here!
- Parks turns on the light in the kitchen.
- Some cut rope sits on the floor in front of Parks.
- Parks takes a knee and looks at the pieces of rope. A wooden
- chair is in the middle of the room.
- PARKS
- Someone tied him down.
- Parks looks around.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Where's his phone?
- Parks looks at the counter. It sits on the kitchen table.
- Parks checks the kitchen.
- Jackie comes back.
- JACKIE
- What have you got?
- Parks points to the door.
- PARKS
- Door was ajar when I got here.
- Either guy was in a hurry or...
- He makes his way over to the door. A blood stain sits on the
- front of it.
- Parks looks down at the glasses on floor, then at the blood
- stained dent on the door.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He forced his way in. Bashed the
- guy's face with the door, then-
- He goes back to the front of the house.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Tied him to the chair.
- JACKIE
- Doesn't explain why he attacked us.
- Parks shakes his head and looks around the house.
- PARKS
- I don't know either. Check the
- house.
- Parks looks around the house and stops at Diaz's computer.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- We'll be taking over from here,
- gentlemen.
- Foot steps enter Diaz's home. Parks looks at the download
- time on the flash drive.
- A flash drive sits plugged into the computer. Parks looks
- around for a moment, then plugs the flash drive into the

- He starts to move folders marked "cases" into the drive.
- Another folder sits in it marked "Knight Pharmaceuticals"

- PARKS
- (muttering)
- Shit, shit, shit...
- Parks watches the download. "90 percent downloaded".
- The footsteps come closer to the door.
- The download finishes. Parks pulls the flash drive out, puts
- it in its case, and puts it back in his pocket.
- An agent, (mid-40s) looks at him.
- IND AGENT 1
- Lemme see your hands. Who the hell
- are you supposed to be?
- PARKS
- Detective David Parks.
- IND AGENT 1
- Where's your badge?
- PARKS
- I'm suspended.
- Matthews appears behind Parks.
- MATTHEWS
- Davey boy, why the hell are you
- chasing leads without us?
- Parks shrugs. He gets his hand out of his pocket.
- PARKS
- Reporter's a friend of mine from-
- MATTHEWS
- Helluva a nickname you got for him.
- Parks raises his arms.
- PARKS
- Motherfucker tried to kill me.
- Matthews shakes his head.
- MATTHEWS
- Real shame, ain't it?
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- He probably lost it working these
- cases I guess.
- MATTHEWS
- Guy like him? Probably.
- Matthews come up and puts his hand on Parks's shoulder.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- Sorry about your friend, Dave.
- Parks nods as the two walk out to

- Detective.
- Parks just shakes his head at this.
- Diaz's body is put on a stretcher.
- PARKS
- Nothing I could've done about it.
- Steele looks at Matthews.
- STEELE
- Mind if I speak to Parks?
- Matthews nods and walks away.
- Steele pulls Parks in close.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- (whispering)
- I'm glad you called me, Parks.
- Parks nods.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- (whispering)
- At this time we're not aware of any
- federal investigations being held
- against you. We don't know what
- those two agents were up to. When
- we tried to question them, they
- told us to talk to their
- supervisor.
- PARKS
- And who would that be?
- Steele motions to Matthews.
- Parks takes out a notepad jots down something.
- STEELE
- (whispering)
- What are you writing?
- PARKS
- There's a few things I'm missing
- here, but I think I have an idea on
- what I'm going after.
- Steele nods.
- STEELE
- Well, given you never fired a shot,
- you don't have to deal with
- paperwork, but just have a report
- done. We clear?
- Parks nods at this.
- PARKS
- Yes, sergeant.
- Steele gives Parks a pat on the back. Parks gets into his car
- and drives off to
- INT. POLICE STATION - AFTERNOON
- Parks goes into his cubicle and looks at it.
- The briefcase with all the files still sits in it. Parks
- opens it and begins to sift through it.
- He plugs the flash drive into the computer.

- A video plays. Dawn is tied up.
- She looks below a camera.
- DAWN
- My name is Dawn Paulsen and I am
- responsible for the trafficking of
- children from eastern Ukraine.
- She stops for a moment. A look of fear registers in her eyes.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- I alongside Marcus Matthews have
- willfully trafficked children into
- the ports of Boston, New York, and
- Los Angeles.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1 (O.S.)
- And under whose orders were you
- working under?
- DAWN
- Matthews.
- A masked man passes her a smartphone.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Can you show us a picture of this
- man?
- Dawn unlocks her phone.
- A picture of Matthews shows on screen.
- Matthews stands behind Parks.
- MATTHEWS
- What you looking at, there
- Detective?
- Parks tabs out and clears his throat.
- PARKS
- J-Just a case I'm following up on
- related to the Hawkins murder.
- Parks takes the flash drive out and puts it in his pocket.
- MATTHEWS
- You think we could compare notes?
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- No, I think I'll be fine.
- MATTHEWS
- Keep at it, Detective.
- Matthews turns around, then stops.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- There's something that's been
- bothering me though. We lost three
- suspects last night actually during
- a prisoner, would you know anything
- about them?
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- Wouldn't know. Who would they be?
- Matthews reaches into his messenger bag and pulls out a
- picture of Nick, Conrad, and Don.
- Parks's eyes widen. Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Wouldn't have a clue who you're
- talking about.
- MATTHEWS
- Damn shame. I think- I think
- there's a connection between the
- "Gentleman carjacker" and Donovan
- Paulsen. You knew the guy, paint me
- a picture.
- Parks shrugs.
- PARKS
- Alcoholic, couldn't really hold
- down a job- Real deadbeat.
- Matthews nods.
- MATTHEWS
- Shame that's what a guy like him
- has turned into after only four
- years. I'll look into the other
- two, but one of them has their
- records sealed. So either we got a
- guy with a really boring job or a
- guy with an insane one. Either way,
- British M.O.D. has him on lockdown.
- PARKS
- Yeah- Yeah they do.
- MATTHEWS
- Well, if you do find anything, let
- me know.
- Matthews walks off.
- Parks gets his phone out and calls Elena.
- PARKS
- Elena, baby?
- ELENA (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Dave- Dave? There's men in the
- house. I got a gun on me but
- there's four of them.
- PARKS
- Oh, shit.
- Parks's eye widen.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Baby, I'm on my way, call 911.
- ELENA
- Alright, Dave.
- Parks gets walks through the police station hallway. He looks
- off to his side and watches Matthews text someone.
- He bumps shoulders with Jackie and Turner. He looks at both.
- PARKS
- I need your help, please.
- JACKIE
- Yeah?
- PARKS
- I got guys breaking into my fucking
- house right now.
- TURNER
- Say no more.
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
- A group of officers keep their guns trained on five guys on
- Parks's lawn.
- Elena sits inside an ambulance and breathes into an oxygen
- mask. A puppy sits in her arms.
- A paramedic motions for her to calm down.
- The three approach the scene.
- Jackie takes her badge off her belt and flashes it at the
- officers.
- Parks takes his badge out.
- PARKS
- Coming through.
- CARLOS HERNANDEZ, (27) looks up at Dave, wide eyed. Hernandez
- looks away.
- Parks looks at the other four IGNACIO, (24), ERNESTO, (26),
- MARTIN, (27), and ADAM, (35).
- A patrol officer stands behind Hernandez.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Miller, you're with me. Turner, see
- what you can find out.
- TURNER
- Yes, sir.
- Parks and Jackie make their way over to the ambulance.
- Elena bursts out in tears.
- ELENA
- I'm sorry, Dave!
- Elena sets the puppy down behind her. She holds Parks.
- PARKS
- Wait, what? Elena, are you hurt?
- Elena cries into his shirt.
- ELENA
- I'm fine, but I was scared Dave- I
- got you a gift and those guys
- almost killed Samantha.
- Parks looks at the puppy.
- PARKS
- I'm not worried about the puppy,
- Elena! What happened though?
- Parks holds her tight.
- ELENA
- They broke in while I was playing
- on your computer- I grabbed my .38
- and ran into the closet, closed the
- door...
- PARKS
- Yeah? What did you hear?
- ELENA
- They were arguing about whether
- they should shoot Samantha.
- PARKS
- Samantha?
- Elena picks up the puppy and shows her to Parks.
- ELENA
- Samantha.
- Elena sets the puppy back down.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- One of them started freaking out
- when he saw something and said, "We
- need to leave, we need to leave!"
- JACKIE
- Would you be able to figure out who
- that might be?
- Parks looks at the five.
- ELENA
- That's not it, though.
- Parks cocks an eyebrow.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- I came out with the gun in my hand
- and there was a guy fighting them
- all-
- Elena shakes her head.
- ELENA (CONT’D)
- I don't know how he did it but he
- managed to get them all outside and
- even closed the door behind him.
- PARKS
- Which one?
- She points at Adam.
- ELENA
- He fought them all and then when I
- pointed a gun at him all he did was
- run outside- I locked the door,
- grabbed Samantha and sat there with
- my gun.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- You gonna be alright, sweetheart?
- ELENA
- Yeah, I'll be okay.
- PARKS
- I'm gonna do my job. We'll be
- alright.
- Parks and Jackie go to
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
- Parks goes inside his house and looks on the ground. A
- lockpick kit sits on the ground.
- PARKS
- Looks like they were in a hurry to
- get inside.
- Parks looks around his house. Some dishes on the ground are
- strewn about the kitchen floor. Some dirty footprints on the
- ground next to that.
- A few picture frames are knocked over.
- Parks looks around. The house looks- fine, with the exception
- of the kitchen. Elena's revolver sits on the table.
- Parks looks around his house again.
- He goes into
- PARKS'S BEDROOM
- It's in good condition, with the only thing out of place
- being the open closet.
- He walks back out to
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
- Parks out of his house. Hernandez gets put in the back of a
- cruiser.
- Parks rolls his eyes and looks at him as he's put into the
- back of a cruiser by Turner. Parks jogs over to him.
- PARKS
- Turner!
- Turner puts him into the back of his cruiser.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I'll take him.
- Carlos's eyes widen.
- CARLOS
- Hey wait, let me explain.
- Parks faces Carlos.
- PARKS
- SHUT UP!
- Turner looks at Parks with a confused look.
- TURNER
- You-You got it, Parks.
- Parks springs the door open and takes Carlos out of the car.
- Parks moves him into the back of an undercover cruiser.
- Jackie cocks an eyebrow and watches Parks.
- JACKIE
- Parks, what the fuck are you-
- PARKS
- Shut up, Jackie.
- JACKIE
- Parks, we gotta do this by the
- book-
- Parks points at her.
- PARKS
- Yeah, we fucking are gonna do it by
- the book, don't you worry about it.
- Parks drives off, suspect in tow.
- INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT
- Parks and Jackie pull Hernandez in. Steele stops Parks.
- STEELE
- Go home.
- PARKS
- The hell you mean?
- STEELE
- You are too attached to this case,
- Parks.
- Steele pulls him aside. Parks looks at Jackie and waves her
- on.
- PARKS
- Go on without me.
- The two stand in a hallway. Officers walk by with paperwork
- in their hands.
- STEELE
- Go home to your wife Parks, I'm
- gonna put you on admin leave this
- time with pay.
- PARKS
- What the hell? I just got my badge
- back, Steele.
- STEELE
- Look, any half rate lawyer is a
- lawsuit waiting to happen. You're
- unfairly biased in this whole
- ordeal.
- PARKS
- Unfairly biased? Hell yeah, I got a
- reason to be unfairly biased. That
- fuck broke into my house with my
- wife and almost killed her.
- STEELE
- Please go home Parks, I ain't gonna
- ask you again. You can keep your
- badge and gun.
- PARKS
- Can I at least sit through the
- interrogation?
- Steele nods.
- STEELE
- Sure you can. Besides, you should
- see how to actual do an
- interrogation and not a smoking.
- PARKS
- Yes, sergeant.
- Steele goes into his office and comes back out with a box of
- doughnuts. A cup of coffee sits on top of it.
- STEELE
- Watch.
- Parks watches him go into the interrogation room. He goes
- into an observation room.
- INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Steele sets the box down. His tone is calm, casual.
- STEELE
- Hey man, how are you today?
- HERNANDEZ
- I don't know, we screwed up- You
- got us, y'know?
- STEELE
- Well, all good things must come to
- an end eventually, right?
- INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Jackie sits next to Parks. They watch the interrogation
- through the double sided mirror.
- HERNANDEZ
- Look, I'll keep it simple. I don't
- say anything until I talk to a
- lawyer.
- STEELE
- Suit yourself.
- JACKIE
- What you working on?
- PARKS
- Wouldn't believe me if I told you.
- JACKIE
- I was married to Donovan Paulsen,
- trust me, nothing fazes me anymore.
- PARKS
- You say that. But here's the thing.
- I know this guy. I busted him a few
- times when I was still a Guardsman.
- Parks looks through his notes.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Suddenly, he comes back into my
- life and he's breaking into my
- fucking house? I'm supposed to take
- that at face value?
- Parks jots another note down.
- Steele comes in.
- STEELE
- Well, that was woefully
- unproductive.
- Parks continues to sit there. He flips through his notes.
- Parks looks at the two officers.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- You got something?
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- Nothing that'll help us- Maybe
- it'll help the Paulsen kidnapping
- case, but past that it's nothing.
- STEELE
- What do you got?
- Parks sighs.
- PARKS
- Something called The Emancipation
- Project.
- Parks takes his phone out and looks it up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- They're some kind of non-profit
- against human trafficking. I don't
- really have anything to go off of,
- or any suspects to follow.
- STEELE
- Well, let's try shaking the tree
- then and see what comes out.
- A knock at the door.
- Steele opens it up.
- He looks back-
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- It's the attorney.
- MICHAEL RAMSEY, (early-50s) looks in.
- RAMSEY
- A moment of privacy gentlemen?
- The three step out of the interrogation room into
- POLICE STATION HALLWAY
- Parks keeps his hands in his pockets. Ramsey comes out.
- RAMSEY
- My client would like to assist with
- the investigation in exchange for
- immunity.
- Parks and Jackie look at each other and nod.
- STEELE
- We'll take it.
- Steele goes back into the interrogation room.
- Parks and Jackie go into the observation room.
- INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Hernandez sips a cup of coffee. Hernandez takes out his
- phone.
- HERNANDEZ
- So, my buddy Ernesto called me up,
- right? Said he had a job for me.
- And I was like- Nah man, I'm on
- parole.
- INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Parks opens Hernandez's file. He starts to put the burglary
- into his mind.
- INT. HERNANDEZ'S APARTMENT - DAY
- Hernandez talks to someone on a phone.
- HERNANDEZ (O.S.)
- And I was like, "I don't want to
- spend another six months for stupid
- shit like that." And then he was
- like, "Man, you being a bitch, so
- then I was like, nah man you try
- spending time in prison with dudes
- bigger than you trying to rape you
- and shit."
- INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Steele shrugs at this.
- STEELE
- Let's get back on topic here,
- Carlos- Can I call you Carlos So,
- you're telling me that Ernesto put
- you up to this?
- Hernandez sips some coffee.
- HERNANDEZ
- Nah, nah- What happened was he said
- there was some crazy, creepy cat
- that was gonna give us some cash if
- we scared a guy. And I was like,
- "Sure."
- STEELE
- There wasn't much damage at the
- Parks apartment. What happened?
- Hernandez smiles at this.
- HERNANDEZ
- Well, that's funny, you know? You
- know that movie about that guy
- whose wife dies and the dog his
- wife gets him gets killed and he
- straight ganks all them other
- motherfuckers? Well, I was watching
- that with mi chica and I got really
- scared of being an actual criminal
- because of that. She had an amazing
- rack, y'know and it was the set of-
- STEELE
- Alright, look. I like a good story
- as much as the next guy, but can we
- cut to the chase here?
- HERNANDEZ
- Sorry, sorry.
- INT. PARKS'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
- The four of them go into Parks's house.
- They all hold baseball bats and wear hoodies. Carlos is at
- the front of the group and walks into the kitchen.
- CARLOS (O.S.)
- We decided to start fucking shit
- up, one room at a time, y'know?
- They start to destroy dishes in the kitchen.
- CARLOS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- Then I saw the fridge.
- Carlos stops at the fridge and looks at the picture of Parks
- in an Army uniform and Elena with her arms around him.
- CARLOS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- "Oh shit," right?
- STEELE (O.S.)
- You know Detective Parks?
- CARLOS (O.S.)
- Met him a few times. But he had an
- old unit picture on the fridge.
- Behind him, a puppy walks runs out to the hallway.
- Carlos looks behind him.
- CARLOS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- Ignacio grabbed the dog and there
- was a whole argument. I didn't want
- Parks going John Wick on all of us
- if we did kill his dog. Ignacio and
- Ernesto kept yelling at me that I
- was being a bitch about the whole
- thing. Before we could do anything
- else, some guy busted down the
- front door.
- The group looks back at a man in a motorcycle helmet, jeans,
- and combat boots.
- The man stands there.
- In one hand, he holds a handgun and in the other holds a
- collapsible baton.
- He raises the gun and pulls the trigger.
- The gun goes click.
- CARLOS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- We thought he didn't load his gun
- so we started rushing him. Ignacio
- pulled out a revolver and started
- to shoot into him.
- The group charges him and goes out to
- EXT. PARKS'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON
- The group ends up outside on Parks's driveway.
- Ernesto charges the man with a knife. The man grabs the knife
- and bashes him in the head with his helmet.
- CARLOS (O.S.)
- That's when I realized I needed to
- split before someone called the
- cops.
- Carlos tries to put the man in a head lock only to get
- elbowed in the face.
- Carlos heads to his car and gets inside of it.
- CARLOS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- I tried to start it- Thing wasn't
- working.
- STEELE (O.S.)
- Yeah, dead battery.
- CARLOS (O.S.)
- Fuck is that what it was? Anyway.
- He was fighting us until the cops
- showed up.
- INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - NIGHT
- PARKS
- I'm gonna go check on one more
- thing and follow up on this in the
- morning.
- Parks gets his files, gets up, and heads off.
- INT. JAIL INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT
- Adam sits in the room. He looks down at the table in front of
- him.
- The jail door slides open.
- Steele and Parks come in. Parks carries a clear shoebox.
- The two seat themselves across from Adam.
- STEELE
- I need you to draw me a picture. We
- tried your prints, nothing. Looked
- you up in every database we have.
- Nada. So, what I want to ask is.
- You got a name?
- Adam looks up.
- ADAM
- Depends which one you're looking
- for.
- STEELE
- What exactly do you mean by that?
- Parks looks up at Adam, then opens the shoebox. He takes out
- a set of dog tags that read "8/13/2016" and above it reads
- "Numquam Obliviscar".
- PARKS
- These tags. MSR Houston. You were
- there?
- Adam nods.
- ADAM
- 42nd Artillery. You?
- Parks looks at the tags.
- PARKS
- 16th MP.
- ADAM
- Snitch.
- Parks grins at that.
- PARKS
- Yeah, you guys were trouble.
- A knock at the jail door.
- Matthews stands there. Adam looks over at Matthews with fear
- in his eyes. Parks looks at Adam and nods at him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- There something you need here,
- agent?
- Matthews points at Adam.
- MATTHEWS
- Need to speak to your suspect.
- PARKS
- Sorry, his lawyer said he wanted to
- speak to me specifically.
- Matthews scoffs at this.
- MATTHEWS
- Real shame. So much for inter-
- agency cooperation, right?
- Matthews steps out.
- Adam sits watches Matthews leave and takes a sigh.
- PARKS
- You know that guy?
- ADAM
- I don't trust him, man. He was CID
- out at Leatherneck.
- Parks looks down. His eyes widen.
- PARKS
- We're done here, thank you for your
- time.
- Parks steps out to
- INT. POLICE STATION - NIGHT
- MATTHEWS
- Hey Parks, where you-
- Matthews's eyes widen.
- Parks shoves past him and walks over to his desk. He reaches
- into it and takes out a disorganized group of files.
- He grabs them and walks into
- INT. STEELE'S OFFICE - NIGHT
- Steele is about to make his way out the door. Parks comes in
- and closes the door behind him.
- PARKS
- We can't trust Matthews.
- Matthews gives him a tired look.
- STEELE
- Parks?
- PARKS
- We cannot fucking trust Matthews.
- STEELE
- Parks, you're-
- Parks starts to flip through his notepad.
- PARKS
- You saw what happened at the truck,
- Steele. He's impeding our
- investigations, constantly
- obstructing what we do. Steele, one
- of our guys was killed and all
- we've been able to do is pick
- pieces up thanks to that prick.
- Steele looks at Parks and sighs.
- Parks walks over to a corkboard and turns it over.
- Behind him, Steele watches him.
- STEELE
- Let's talk outside, alright?
- Parks puts notes up on the corkboard.
- PARKS
- Fine, fine-
- Parks steps back and starts to connect the dots.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- It's all connected- the cartel, the
- Emancipation Project.
- Steele nods at this and sets his coat on the chair next to
- him. He watches Parks put his notes up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Sir, we gotta keep eyes on
- Matthews. Whatever he does, I want
- to be on it like white on rice.
- Parks finishes putting his notes up.
- STEELE
- Whatever you need, Parks. You tell
- anyone else?
- PARKS
- I'll tell Miller, but I don't know
- who else on that team I can trust.
- STEELE
- I'll keep you in the know. They got
- something planned for tomorrow.
- Some kind of raid on a suspected
- terrorist at Phoenix Community
- college. That's all I know.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- Thanks.
- Parks steps out.
- STEELE
- No problem.
- As Parks steps out of Steele's office, Steele gets his phone
- out.
- STEELE (CONT’D)
- Hey, it's me. We may have a
- problem.
- EXT. COMMUNITY COLLEGE - DAY
- Parks sits in his Toyota across the street from two agents.
- The college bustles with activity as college students go from
- class to class or back to their cars.
- PARKS
- What on earth are they looking
- for...?
- The two agents get on their radio.
- Parks watches them. The two step out of their cars.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Alright then...
- Parks reaches into his glove box and takes out a pack of
- Lucky Strikes. He passes the two agents and looks off to the
- side. One agent stands alone behind a blue Toyota further
- down the road. He looks off to the side as Parks takes cover
- behind a sedan next to him.
- IND AGENT 1 (O.S.)
- Stay the fuck outta the way kid,
- police business!
- Eli puts his hands up and gets behind a car. Parks looks left
- and right. The area looks clear.
- Parks comes up behind the agent. The agent reaches for his
- gun-
- Parks puts the agent in a chokehold. The agent struggles.
- Parks pulls him behind a van and continues to choke him out.
- PARKS
- Gotosleep, gosleepgotosleep...
- Parks looks off to his side.
- Eli takes out a 1911. The man goes unconscious as Parks takes
- out his badge and flashes it. He puts one finger between his
- lips and motions for Eli to be quiet.
- Eli nods.
- ELI
- No, I didn't see shit.
- Eli moves over and sits behind the wheelwell of his car.
- Parks takes the agent's radio and puts it on, then takes his
- wallet.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Anyone got eyes on the Paulsen
- girl?
- Parks takes cover behind the van and peers behind him.
- A gunshot rings out.
- WALSH (O.S.)
- (radio)
- The bitch just shot me!
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Get her! We're about to have local
- PD on us in a second!
- Parks walks back and forth and watches the agents' movements.
- They're organized and communicate among one another. He
- watches two of them talk amongst themselves, then move.
- Parks sees Ash get out. The two continue to walk as she
- starts to skirt behind the cars. Parks gets behind the van
- and waits.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- (radio)
- Anyone got eyes on?
- IND AGENT 1
- Negative. We got one, we'll be
- taking her to site one. No eyes on
- Paulsen.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Copy, keep looking, lemme know if
- you find something. You got three
- minutes, first shots fired call
- just went out.
- IND AGENT 1 (O.S.)
- Copy, we'll look.
- Parks looks over where Eli is.
- Sirens ring out in the distance.
- Ash and Eli argue for a moment, then get in the car. The car
- speeds off as Parks watches for a moment,
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Be advised, got eyes on a moving
- vehicle, moving to intercept.
- The two drive off and make it halfway across the parking lot.
- Parks makes a run forward towards the two and takes his gun
- out.
- The scream of tires fills the air.
- Then a crash.
- Parks puts his gun in its holster. Three agents drag Ash out
- of a cruiser as Eli falls out of the car in his daze.
- Matthews stands over him. Parks wraps the radio around
- Eli backs up and reaches behind him for his 1911 on the
- floor. Eli grabs it, only to get dragged back. An agent steps
- on his wrist which causes him to cry out in pain.
- An agent flips him on his back and launches a punch into his
- face.
- The agent starts to beat him down. Two others kick into his
- back and side
- Parks runs over. He flashes his badge as the two agents turn
- Eli over and handcuff him.
- PARKS
- What the fuck are you doing?!
- The agents stop beating Eli.
- IND AGENT 1
- He was resisting, he pulled a
- fucking gun on us!
- Parks walks over and looks at Eli.
- PARKS
- Then call an ambulance, you prick!
- He's subdued!
- Eli lets out a groan of pain as he rolls over. A black bag
- sits over Ash's head. Her hands are ziptied as she's thrown
- into a van.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS, MATTHEWS?!
- MATTHEWS
- A matter of national security,
- detective! Now stand back!
- Matthews gets into the van as the other agents pack up and
- move out. The knocked out agent is carried away by Walsh.
- PARKS
- What the fuck...
- Other cruisers arrive on scene as the others leaves.
- Turner runs over to Parks.
- TURNER
- You okay?!
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- I'll ride with you.
- INT. POLICE SUV - AFTERNOON
- Parks takes out the agent's wallet and looks at his
- credentials. Jackie sits in the back.
- Parks looks at Jackie. He takes out his notepad and looks
- over at the Emancipation Project page related to it.
- Parks takes out his phone. He dials a number.
- The line rings.
- MICHAEL SHAW, (early-50s) picks up the phone.
- SHAW (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Shaw speaking.
- PARKS (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Hi there, Mr. Shaw? I'm Detective
- David Parks-
- Shaw chuckles.
- SHAW (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Heard your name before. Sorry about
- your partner.
- PARKS (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Thanks. I got some questions I
- wanted to ask you in person, you
- wouldn't mind meeting up would you?
- SHAW (O.S.)
- (phone)
- That's just fine, I'm more than
- happy to support law enforcement in
- their fight against crime! Meet me
- at my office, I'll text you in
- address.
- INT. OFFICE - AFTERNOON
- Two cartel members stand in the office. The phone is on
- speaker. They both stand with guns out.
- PARKS (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Yeah, I'll be there in the next
- hour.
- Shaw smiles at this.
- SHAW
- You got it detective! Have a good
- one!
- Shaw hangs up the call.
- He nods at the two in front of him.
- CUT TO:
- Parks walks into the room and takes out his notepad.
- PARKS
- Mr. Shaw-
- Both gang bangers put guns to his head.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Are you fucking with me?
- Shaw shakes his head.
- SHAW
- 'fraid not, son. Have a seat.
- Parks takes a seat and sighs.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- Now, I don't want to hurt you son.
- But you've gone down this rabbit
- hole and I think you deserve the
- truth.
- Parks cocks an eyebrow at him.
- PARKS
- That's all I've been looking for.
- SHAW
- You were an MP in Afghanistan.
- Parks nods.
- PARKS
- That's correct.
- SHAW
- And you were in the MSR Houston
- incident, correct?
- Parks nods but looks around even more confused.
- PARKS
- Yeah, but what the hell's that
- gotta do with all this?
- SHAW
- You work under acting special
- agent, Matthews too, correct?
- PARKS
- How do you know all this?
- Shaw sighs.
- SHAW
- Son, I don't know how to break this
- to you, but at MSR Houston you were
- attacked by government agents.
- PARKS
- Did they attack us with the girls
- from Sailor Moon too?
- Shaw chuckles at that.
- SHAW
- Good sense of humor you got on you.
- Shaw reaches into his desk. Parks watches.
- He takes out a flash drive and plugs it into his computer in
- front of him. Shaw angles the monitor to face Parks.
- PARKS
- Holy fuck.
- EXT. MOUNTAIN - DAY
- On screen, "insurgents" fire at a convoy below the mountain.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- Like fish in a fuckin' barrel!
- The group fire on the convoy below. A figure darts back and
- forth between stopped vehicles.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- Can someone fucking kill that dude
- down there?!
- Two pickup trucks roll speed behind the convoy and fire DSHK
- machine guns at the group. Don can be seen between moving
- between vehicles. At times, he stops to fire at a nearby
- mountain.
- The crack of gunfire as the group get down and shoot back.
- Parks sees himself on an M240 SAW as he fires at targets
- below. Another agent dressed in insurgent garb has an RPG
- out.
- IND AGENT 1
- CLEAR BACKBLAST, 400! ROCKET!
- The rocket flies into two soldiers. One has a cloth over his
- face and carries another.
- MATTHEWS
- We gotta move let's go!
- BACK TO:
- INT. OFFICE - AFTERNOON
- Shaw reaches his hand out. His eyes show genuine concern.
- SHAW
- Now, son...
- Parks stands up and screams in terror.
- PARKS
- That's doctored footage! You
- fucking liar!
- The two gang members walk over to try and do something-
- Shaw waves them away and shakes his head.
- Parks at Shaw, his face red with anger.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO
- GET THOSE MEMORIES AWAY FROM ME?!
- DO YOU KNOW WHAT I HAVE HAD TO DO
- OVER THE YEARS TO KEEP MYSELF FROM
- EXPERIENCING THAT SHIT AGAIN?! And
- you show me that!
- Shaw stands up. He looks at Parks and walks to him.
- SHAW
- It's real, it's real... But son.
- Parks walks to the back of the room and grabs a trash can. He
- vomits into it. The two gang members look clearly disgusted
- at this.
- PARKS
- Do you know what that incident did
- to us?! To all of us?! Some of the
- guys still wear fucking diapers
- from the shit! Some of us are stuck
- trying to forget the past while
- fucks like you keep trying to
- resurrect it! Then you shoot at
- fucking cops thinking you're all
- that!
- SHAW
- All I ever wanted was justice for
- all this.
- PARKS
- Where'd you get it? Who's your
- source?
- Parks's hands shake.
- SHAW
- Reporter. Mark Diaz.
- PARKS
- He went crazy and tried to kill me.
- Shaw shakes his head.
- SHAW
- Experimental psychoactive drug.
- Parks sits back down and buries his head in his hands.
- PARKS
- What?
- Shaw takes out a manila folder.
- Parks reads through it.
- SHAW
- Go to the toxicology report.
- PARKS
- Methamphetamines.
- Shaw shakes his head.
- SHAW
- Matthews has been fucking around
- with psychoactive drugs, Parks.
- Experimental shit. The only guys
- who know about it being...
- PARKS
- Dawn Paulsen of Knight
- Pharmaceuticals.
- Shaw nods at Parks.
- SHAW
- Now you're getting it.
- PARKS
- Then you're the assholes who took
- kidnapped them.
- Shaw nods at this.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- She still alive?
- SHAW
- Non-compliant, but alive, yes.
- Parks looks down.
- PARKS
- What's your stake in all this?
- He motions to the guys behind him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- And theirs too. They're cartel.
- SHAW
- I lost my kid after I got back from
- the sandbox in '91. It was the
- worst feeling in the world. They
- found her a few years later. Dead
- in the forest. Some hikers came
- across the body. They told me to
- come in and ID the thing. She had
- scars everywhere like you wouldn't
- believe.
- Shaw looks down.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- It ate at me. I left my wife,
- reenlisted. I needed to distract
- myself from Christina's death. I
- was working in Bosnia when I came
- across something similar. A group
- of militia guys showed me some of
- the guys they had captured. They
- told me they were mobsters. I asked
- 'em, "Why the hell should I be
- worried about some damn criminals?"
- Then this one lady walks out of a
- room, and she has this look like
- she's just walked into the gates of
- hell itself. She points me to it. I
- go in there. There's girls that
- were my daughter's age. We let the
- girls go. Killed the criminals. I
- saved the leader for myself. Kept
- him alive for a week. By the time
- some proper investigator got to
- him, he'd died of a sucking chest
- wound. I promised myself... I
- promised myself that when I got out
- I wouldn't let that shit ever
- happen again. Worked a few
- construction jobs to get my fix.
- PARKS
- So you made the Emancipation
- Project.
- SHAW
- Worked a few jobs to support myself
- to do so, but yeah. They were
- people, good, normal, and sensible
- people who wanted things done the
- right way.
- PARKS
- Why didn't you want it done the
- right way through guys like me?
- Shaw scoffs at this.
- SHAW
- Guys like you? Who send them to
- jail where they get a lengthy
- trial, get the power of the
- completely infallible appeals
- process and if they're lucky get a
- lighter sentence for flipping on
- their own boys? Oh, I've tried that
- Detective. Believe me, it was the
- first thing I did. The system is
- too crooked for that. What would
- you do? What if it was that Elena
- girl of yours?
- Parks sighs.
- PARKS
- You're right.
- SHAW
- The cartel, they want some of their
- boys freed. You killed one of their
- lieutenants and as much as they
- want revenge they've agreed that
- you're off limits. Blood for blood
- in their eyes.
- PARKS
- And what do you need me to do?
- SHAW
- Join us, detective. We'll take you
- to our base of operations and you
- can be the man on the inside that
- we need.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- I can't. I'm sorry. If I walk out
- with you, right now, my guys are
- gonna think something's up. Let me
- meet you on my terms. Tonight.
- Parks stands up. Parks reaches out for a handshake.
- SHAW
- You got it.
- The two shake hands. Parks steps out.
- INT. POLICE SUV - AFTERNOON
- Parks gets into the car.
- JACKIE
- How'd it go?
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- You're not gonna believe what I've
- found. How much do you trust
- Matthews?
- JACKIE
- Go on.
- CUT TO:
- The group sit in the SUV outside the station.
- PARKS
- Jackie, you stay with Matthews. See
- if you can shadow him. Turner,
- you're with me while I go meet up
- with the Emancipation Project. If
- this works, we can take Matthews
- down the right way.
- Parks's phone rings.
- Steele's name comes up in the contact.
- Parks pick it up.
- STEELE (O.S.)
- We got a Donovan Paulsen who says
- he got stuck in a storage unit and
- that his daughter's been kidnapped
- by a Marcus Matthews.
- Parks sighs.
- PARKS
- Give us a location, we're on our
- way.
- EXT. POLICE SUV - AFTERNOON
- The SUV speeds off.
- EXT. SELF-STORAGE BUILDING - AFTERNOON
- The SUV drives past two officers.
- Parks walks over to Don. Don sits next to James
- PARKS
- Whatever it is you're chasing. You
- need to leave it to us, Doc.
- DON
- My daughter is missing, and you
- people have done nothing but sit on
- your asses and twiddle your thumbs.
- PARKS
- Who kidnapped your daughter Don?
- Don sighs.
- DON
- My boss, Marcus Matthews.
- Parks massages his eyes.
- PARKS
- Ohhh, shit.
- DON
- You know him?
- Parks scratches his head.
- PARKS
- Go home. Stay outta this.
- DON
- It's my daugh-
- PARKS
- I KNOW!
- Jackie stands there.
- JACKIE
- Donny, please.
- DON
- DON'T FUCKING CALL ME THAT! You
- don't got a god damn right!
- James pulls Don back as the three get back in the SUV.
- Parks closes his eyes and sighs.
- CUT TO:
- EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT
- An SUV sits parked by an empty highway in the woods.
- Parks looks at Turner.
- PARKS
- If I'm not back in 12 hours, call
- everyone. You get the National
- Guard out here and you wipe whoever
- it is working here off the face of
- the fucking Earth. Are we clear?
- Turner nods.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Good.
- Parks makes his way into
- EXT. FOREST - NIGHT
- Parks holds out a flashlight and his phone. He copies a set
- of coordinates in a text message from a contact that reads
- "unknown" and puts into Google maps.
- Parks looks down at his phone. It reads "Distance: 10 miles
- away".
- He cocks an eyebrow. Parks starts to walk and shines the
- light forward.
- Parks continues to walk.
- Parks raises an eyebrow as he looks up. Two lights shine on
- him.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- HALT! WHO GOES THERE?!
- PARKS
- Santa fucking Claus!
- One of the lights shines brighter as a militia soldier walks
- closer to Parks.
- Parks puts his hand out in front of his face.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Post, we got one outside the
- perimeter.
- The soldier walks toward Parks. He wears jeans and a flannel
- shirt with a tan plate carrier.
- PARKS
- I'm looking for Shaw.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Phoenix PD?
- PARKS
- Yeah, of course.
- The soldier walks up to Parks.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Keep your hands up. You carrying?
- PARKS
- That's kind of my job there,
- detective.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- It's always a fucking smartass.
- He walks over and searches Parks. He grabs Parks's wallet. A
- picture of Elena falls out.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1 (CONT’D)
- Badge is good- What do we got here?
- He looks at the picture on the ground. Parks tries to reach
- for it.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1 (CONT’D)
- Ah, ah, ahh. Nope.
- He grabs the picture off the ground and looks at the back of
- it.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1 (CONT’D)
- Taken in 2016, huh? Fuck that was a
- time ago. I'll be keeping this.
- He puts the picture in the pocket of his jeans.
- PARKS
- Fuck no you won't.
- The soldier motions to his rifle.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- How about you drew down on me and I
- had to put two in you?
- PARKS
- Fuck, fine it's just a picture.
- Parks sighs.
- IND MILITIA SOLDIER 1
- Shaw's gonna see you inside.
- PARKS
- There's an inside.
- The soldier points toward the interior perimeter.
- Parks sighs and looks around. The other militia soldiers are
- dressed the similar. Some wear assorted camouflage while
- others wear plain T-shirts and plate carriers. The look is
- the same.
- Paramilitary.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- They got better fucking gear than
- the local SWAT team. I wonder how
- well they train.
- He walks up to a concrete building in the side of a mountain.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- A fucking bunker, jesus fuck.
- A camera at the end of it looks at Parks. He walks forward
- towards it. A light shines and causes him to put his hand up
- once more.
- SHAW (O.S.)
- (loudspeaker)
- Parks?
- PARKS
- Yeah, it's me.
- The doors open. Parks walks forward.
- INT. MISSILE SILO - NIGHT
- The silo is well lit.
- PARKS
- What the hell...
- Shaw stands in the middle to greet Parks.
- SHAW
- Detective!
- PARKS
- You got all this? How the hell did
- you manage to stay under the radar?
- SHAW
- We only show this place to people
- who prove themselves to us.
- Normally, that applies to members
- and the absolutely loyal.
- PARKS
- And no three letter agency has
- happened catch you in the process-
- (chuckles)
- You know militias stop being cool
- in the nineties right?
- SHAW
- We have people actually as members
- of said three letters. Come on.
- PARKS
- That's... concerning.
- The two walk together.
- SHAW
- It's what happens when you got
- three decades worth of help.
- Internet connection's good too. We
- got a few guys who work with fiber
- optics.
- They pass by more soldiers. Parks passes by a sign that reads
- "Cafeteria". Other militia members sit inside, laugh, and eat
- together.
- PARKS
- And these are all volunteers?
- SHAW
- Good majority of them are, yeah.
- We're all together today- Well,
- most of us at least. We all work
- odd jobs when we're not taking care
- of this place, but there's always
- someone here.
- PARKS
- Then what do you need me for?
- SHAW
- The Paulsen girl. She's yours.
- PARKS
- What?
- SHAW
- We got what we needed. We just need
- you to take her.
- PARKS
- You just showed me your entire base
- of operations. For one person.
- SHAW
- Yeah.
- Parks just looks at this dumbfounded.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- Well you've come this far.
- PARKS
- You're quick to trust. That's...
- dangerous. Take me to her.
- The two go into
- INT. CONTROL ROOM - NIGHT
- Dawn sits there and eats a meal.
- SHAW
- All the questions you got for her,
- she'll answer.
- PARKS
- You know she's fucking worthless
- now, right?
- Shaw cocks an eyebrow.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- They'll throw everything about my
- case out because you guys coerced a
- confession out of her!
- Shaw shakes his head and places his hand on Parks's shoulder.
- DAWN
- I can show you where we kept the
- samples.
- PARKS
- What's your stake in all this? The
- kids?
- DAWN
- Get me out of here and I'll answer
- everything.
- She finishes her food. She looks fine, as if she wasn't
- harmed.
- PARKS
- What happened anyway?
- SHAW
- After we nabbed her, we roughed her
- up a little bit, but we got the
- flash drive off her.
- Shaw passes Parks the flashdrive.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- It's the video I showed you
- earlier.
- PARKS
- Why don't you just tip off the
- right people?
- SHAW
- We have. They always end up dead,
- reassigned, or replaced.
- PARKS
- Oh, and you expect me not to end up
- the same way. You're fuckin'
- stupid.
- SHAW
- Be that as it may, you are the last
- hope we have Parks. Even if we go
- down, you're the one who needs to
- expose all of this.
- PARKS
- The FBI? Some senator- Could've
- leaked it online-
- SHAW
- Easily debunked as conspiracy
- drivel, Detective.
- Parks looks off at Dawn.
- PARKS
- Miss Paulsen. Let's go.
- Vera Lynn's "We'll Meet Again" plays over loudspeakers.
- SHAW
- What the hell?
- Shaw gets on a walkie talkie. Gunfire rings out in the halls.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- (into radio)
- Power team, report.
- Silence.
- SHAW (CONT’D)
- Fuck.
- (points to Dawn)
- You need to get her out.
- Parks takes out his Glock.
- Shaw reaches into a cabinet and takes out a shotgun. He racks
- it.
- PARKS
- Way ahead of you!
- A militia soldier comes in. A hole is in his chest.
- SHAW
- Mr. Shaw?
- Gunfire rings out in the halls. The power goes out. The room
- goes black. The backup power kicks back on as an alarm rings
- out through the bunker.
- PARKS
- Paulsen, get behind me!
- Dawn gets behind him as Shaw opens the door.
- Gunfire continues to echo down the hallway.
- The three stack up on the door.
- Parks looks behind him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- No matter what happens, you find
- your way outta here. We clear?
- Dawn nods at him.
- Shaw peers out with a shotgun.
- SHAW
- We're good, come on.
- INT. MISSILE SILO - NIGHT
- The other soldiers shoot it out with an unknown enemy. They
- fall, one by one as the three continue to move toward the
- exit of the bunker.
- The group pass by another group of dead militiamen.
- DAWN
- Oh, shit...
- Parks stops for a moment and unslings one of the rifles off a
- dead guy. He reaches into the militiaman's chest carrier and
- takes the magazines out of it.
- SHAW
- Come on, Parks!
- Parks nods as he continues to move with Shaw.
- PARKS
- Keeping up there, Paulsen?
- DAWN
- Yeah, trying.
- The group continues to move through the silo.
- Shaw stops.
- A group of dark silhouettes stands there. They look to speak
- amongst themselves.
- Shaw pops out, shotgun in hand.
- SHAW
- Who's there?! identify yourselves!
- IND GANG MEMBER 1
- Cartel, homie, who are you?
- Parks gets on his stomach and trains his rifle on one of
- them.
- One of the gang members starts to reach for his handgun.
- PARKS
- Gun left!
- Parks takes aim with his rifle and pulls the trigger.
- The other gang members start to shoot back as one drops.
- Parks continues to fire his rifle at the second one.
- The third gang member takes cover behind a wooden crate.
- Shaw fires his shotgun into it, the crate starts to show
- damage.
- The gang member pops out of cover with an AK. Parks and Shaw
- light him up as he's riddled with shotgun shells and bullets.
- Parks stands up and cuts around Shaw.
- SHAW
- We gotta move, Parks!
- The three continue to run as Parks looks at a body on the
- ground. It's Walsh.
- PARKS
- Oh fuck, I know who these guys are.
- Parks reaches into his pocket and reaches for a radio with an
- earpiece.
- MATTHEWS
- -Give me a status, do we have an
- eyes on Parks, the kid, or the
- doctor?
- IND AGENT (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Negative, no eyes on here, just
- bodies.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Make sure you get them, it was hard
- enough to flip the cartel to us.
- PARKS
- Oh, fuck.
- Parks looks at Shaw.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- New plan, everyone is hostile. He's
- turned your bullshit alliance
- around.
- SHAW
- SHIT!
- IND AGENT (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Be advised, I got gunfire near the
- exit of the bunker!
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- (radio)
- I'll be there to intercept!
- PARKS
- We got a fight coming to us, Shaw!
- Shaw reloads his shotgun while the group continues to move
- toward the front of the silo.
- Gunfire rings out behind them.
- Parks takes cover behind a forklift, stops, and fires behind
- him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Contact, six o'clock!
- Parks begins to fire at the direction of the muzzle flashes.
- Shaw gets behind a concrete wall.
- SHAW
- Parks, move!
- Parks moves back as Shaw covers him with a shotgun. Dawn gets
- low to the ground.
- PARKS
- We gotta run!
- IND AGENT (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Got eyes on three assailants,
- moving to engage!
- Parks grabs Dawn's arm and the two start to run. Rounds fly
- past the two as Parks takes cover behind a wall across from
- Shaw.
- SHAW
- Loading!
- Shaw reloads his shotgun as Parks peers out. Matthews's
- agents run out. Parks starts to light them up. Behind him,
- Dawn covers her ears.
- PARKS
- Shaw, loading!
- Parks changes his rifle's magazine out for a fresh one.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Loaded, move!
- Parks fires his rifle at more advancing silhouettes of
- agents.
- SHAW
- Parks, move!
- Parks grabs Dawn and they move to the silo's exit.
- PARKS
- Set!
- Parks peers out again.
- DAWN
- Parks behind you!
- Parks looks behind him. Agents pop out from the outside of
- the site.
- PARKS
- Shit! Shaw, we have to move
- together!
- Shaw looks behind him as rounds continue to ping off the
- concrete wall next to him.
- Shaw looks behind him-
- A spatter of blood and brain matter comes out of his head.
- Parks looks over at this. His eyes widen.
- He takes a deep breath.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Once more unto the breach, dear
- friends, once more...
- Parks pulls his magazine out and stays low.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- ...Or close the wall up with our
- English dead.
- Dawn's eyes widen.
- DAWN
- Mikee used to say that before
- deployment...
- PARKS
- Whatever happens, Dawn. Get outta
- here. Do whatever you want. But I'm
- getting you out.
- Parks lets out a scream as he charges out with his AR. A
- round flies into his back as he continues to charge forward.
- AGENT (O.S.)
- (radio)
- Two contacts outside, take 'em
- down!
- Parks screams with all his might as he runs out to
- EXT. FOREST - NIGHT
- Parks fires his rifle where he saw the agents firing at him.
- Another pops out and tries to take a shot at him.
- Parks crouches down, takes a round in the abdomen, and fires
- into the man's body. He falls backwards as Dawn runs into the
- forest to the side of Parks.
- Parks gets back up, his face red, with anger in his eyes.
- DAWN
- Detective, come on!
- Parks follows her and provides covering fire, with rounds
- continuing to hit him.
- He becomes riddled with holes, front and back.
- Dawn continues to run. Flashlights follow behind them.
- Parks makes his way forward. His vision to start to go in and
- out. Blood comes out of his mouth as he uses the trees around
- him as a way to keep balanced.
- Parks takes off the rifle and throws it to the ground.
- Dawn runs back to him.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- How far is it?!
- Parks points forward.
- PARKS
- ...Close...
- Dawn carries him.
- DAWN
- Come on, come on...
- Parks continues to black out as the SUV can be seen.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- HEY! HEYYY!
- She stops and looks in the SUV. Turner sits in the SUV with a
- bullet in the side of his head.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- Oh shit, he's dead!
- She drags him out of the SUV and throws him to the side.
- Parks struggles to stay conscious.
- Parks fades in and out as she sets him down in the
- passenger's seat.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- I'll get you out of here, Parks.
- The sound of tires revving.
- PARKS
- Elena...
- DAWN
- You'll get to see Elena, it's okay,
- come on, come on come on...
- Parks looks at Dawn again.
- DAWN (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- I need to treat you, fuck.
- Parks lets out a pained groan.
- PARKS
- Elena!
- DAWN (O.S.)
- Fuck!
- Dawn pulls off to the side of the road.
- FADE TO WHITE.
- INT. KNIGHT PHARMACEUTICALS LAB - DAY
- A light appears above Parks. He lays on an operating table.
- Dawn appears above him. She wears scrubs and injects Parks
- with a larger, blue syringe.
- Parks takes a breath of air and looks down. He screams in
- pain as he watches the holes in him close themselves. The
- skin and muscle reconstruct as Parks takes another gasp for
- air.
- The pain subsides. Parks takes another deep breath.
- DAWN
- You feeling better?
- PARKS
- Where's Turner?
- Dawn shakes her head.
- DAWN
- I'm sorry.
- Parks buries his head in his hands.
- He tries to stand up, only to fall down.
- PARKS
- FUCK! Where am I?
- DAWN
- Considered missing, no one knows
- where you are. My brother
- apparently killed his wife then got
- out of jail.
- PARKS
- Wonderful.
- Parks struggles to stand up.
- DAWN
- Give it a moment, the nanites are
- still trying to reconstruct your
- muscles and ribs.
- Parks puts up one finger and takes a breath.
- PARKS
- Feels fine to me. Nanites?
- Dawn shrugs.
- Parks puts a shirt on and stands up.
- DAWN
- We've been working on nanites that
- can reconstruct parts of a person.
- Parks manages to stand up now.
- PARKS
- That aside. Seriously. Where am I?
- DAWN
- Knight Pharma, Scottsdale.
- PARKS
- Fuck, we shouldn't be here!
- DAWN
- Relax, it's Sunday. Medical wing's
- off today.
- PARKS
- And you know this-
- DAWN
- I've worked here for a near decade
- I should know this, Parks.
- Dawn throws him a pair of jeans. AMBER, (mid-20s) with red
- hair, fox ears, and a tail stands there and holds a tray of
- food.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- You're gonna need these.
- PARKS
- What the fuck?
- Amber stands there in confusion. She looks down.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- I've lost it. Miss Paulsen, if you
- could kindly give me my nine
- milimeter, I will gladly make my
- exit from this world.
- DAWN
- It's been hard keeping your friend
- from the truth.
- PARKS
- Maybe you should tell him. I'm sure
- he could use some more new hobbies.
- Parks continues to stare at Amber with confusion in his eyes.
- Amber looks down. Parks looks at Dawn.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What else do you have cooked up in
- this house of horrors, Paulsen?
- DAWN
- The guys who killed your partner.
- Amber sets the tray down.
- AMBER
- It's for you!
- Parks reaches his hand out and pats her ears.
- PARKS
- My god, I've gone and lost my mind.
- AMBER
- Is he okay Miss Paulsen?
- DAWN
- He just needs some getting used to
- all of this.
- Parks sighs and looks at the plate of food. It's some chicken
- alfredo pasta.
- PARKS
- Thanks.
- He takes the tray from her.
- She smiles at him and walks off. Parks takes a plastic fork
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Autistic?
- Dawn cocks an eyebrow at Parks.
- DAWN
- You can tell?
- PARKS
- Yeah, I used to volunteer at a
- children's hospital.
- DAWN
- You must have had an interesting
- childhood, Parks. Now that's
- something I would've paid to see.
- The big badass detective helping
- kids in a hospital.
- PARKS
- I was doing it for the college
- credit. Anyway.
- Parks moves over to a counter and eats his food. Dawn slides
- him a keycard, his badge, and his gun across the counter.
- DAWN
- End this Parks. All of it.
- Parks chuckles.
- PARKS
- You want me to kill you after all
- this, Dawn? Starting to sound like
- your brother.
- DAWN
- That keycard goes to sublevel one.
- There's a vault down there. All the
- evidence you need to take Matthews
- down with it.
- Parks finishes his food and looks at the two cards.
- DAWN (CONT’D)
- You're gonna want to call for
- backup, you know.
- Parks shakes his head.
- PARKS
- I'm gonna solve this case myself.
- I've gone this far.
- DAWN
- You what?
- Parks pushes the tray forward.
- PARKS
- I'm gonna take 'em in alone.
- DAWN
- Oh, no. You've lost it.
- PARKS
- This was my goal from the start!
- DAWN
- What? Screw over everyone else's
- plans?
- PARKS
- What do you mean?
- DAWN
- Oh, I don't know. Everything that I
- did and your department did to keep
- you from losing your job, dying,
- y'know all of the important stuff.
- And you're gonna throw it away.
- PARKS
- Sorry to have disappointed you
- then.
- Parks grabs his things and steps out of the room. He steps
- into an elevator.
- INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY - DAY
- Parks turns on a light switch to an empty lab. Nothing truly
- stands out as he walks through it.
- The hallway itself sits empty. Parks walks through it. It's
- well lit, well-maintained, and clean.
- Parks walks through it. He hears a thud.
- PARKS
- (echoing)
- Hello?
- He looks behind him.
- Nothing.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Losing my fucking mind here.
- Parks walks through the halls.
- He puts his hands in his pockets. A decontamination section
- sits in front of him. A card reader sits next to some
- automatic doors.
- Parks scans the badge.
- FEMALE ANNOUNCER (O.S.)
- Welcome Doctor Paulsen.
- Parks walks into
- INT. LABORATORY - DAY
- The lights around come on. Against the wall list the faces of
- doctors. Dawn is on one of them.
- Parks looks at it and sighs.
- He looks down at the keycard. Dawn's face is on it and she
- looks younger.
- In black sharpie reads, "My office: Office 12".
- Parks walks through the lab.
- He passes through windowed offices attatched to the inside
- and follows the numbers.
- He walks through other labs and stops at an office with a
- "12" above its windowed sliding door. Another card reader
- sits in front of it.
- PARKS
- Would ye kindly?
- Parks puts the card up to the door. It slides open.
- DAWN'S OFFICE
- PARKS
- Fucking Umbrella Corporation guys,
- I swear to god...
- Parks looks around a small office. It's surrounded by stuffed
- animals and almost looks like an office meant for children.
- Parks looks around it. On a desk sits a picture of Don and
- Dawn, the two are kids in the picture. Don wears a birthday
- hat, the date below it reads March 23rd, 1997. Behind them
- are their parents. Don wears a birthday hat and gives an
- eccstatic smile to a camera.
- He holds a Pikachu plush. His sister hugs him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- He never talked about his
- childhood...
- Parks looks at the desk. On the desk a sticky note that
- reads: "Password: oct181998".
- Parks turns on the desktop. He puts the password in and opens
- up Dawn's e-mails. He creates a new message.
- Parks sifts through Dawn's emails and opens up a video
- message that reads "Test subject: #94".
- The tab opens to
- INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - NIGHT
- A little girl's screams break out and echo. A camera pans on
- Sarah. She sits in a chair with an IV in her arm.
- IND RESEARCHER 1
- What's your name little girl?
- SARAH
- My name's Sarah Flynn.
- IND RESEARCHER 1
- And where's your family from?
- SARAH
- Ireland...
- IND RESEARCHER 1
- Run it again.
- More screams break out.
- DAWN'S OFFICE
- PARKS
- Oh, fuck...
- Scream after scream breaks out as Parks goes through each of
- the emails. He sends one after another.
- Parks stops at another e-mail that reads simply, "intent to
- resign".
- The message reads:
- "Marcus,
- This is the last straw. If I see another incident like the
- one on April 15th, I am leaving this post. That's my
- brother!"
- Parks takes out his wallet. He takes out the dog tags that he
- showed Adam.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- April 15th, 2015... He really did
- it.
- Another reply to it:
- "My goal is to increase the security apparatus of the United
- States Armed Forces through any means necessary or required.
- The people of this country are more divided than ever before.
- As it was in 1941, the United States needs to find a reason
- to come together."
- Dawn replies.
- "My *brother* was in that convoy! The Hero of Houston? That
- was *MY* brother, Marc. We're done! Anymore favors I gotta do
- for you better have a good god damn reason behind them!"
- Parks looks down.
- He continues to send more emails over to another recipient.
- Parks looks at the drawers around the desk.
- One opens up.
- A red Gameboy sits in it.
- Parks takes it out and turns it over.
- It reads, "To the best sister in the world. 10/22/2004"
- Parks looks down and sighs.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Better than what I had.
- Parks gets back on the computer. He looks through more
- emails.
- He stops at another. The office phone on the table rings.
- Parks picks up the receiver.
- DAWN(O.S.)
- (phone)
- What do you think?
- PARKS
- I'm trying to figure out
- specifically what I'm supposed to
- be looking at here. It doesn't
- answer why you pretended to be a
- fed or even why you've been helping
- the militia.
- DAWN
- Marcus was gonna promote me if I
- helped him... We were a thing for a
- bit but after I found out what he
- did to my brother and the people
- around him-
- PARKS
- You cut him off.
- DAWN
- He dragged me into things. Told me
- that if I didn't play ball with him
- that he'd hurt my brother.
- Parks laughs.
- PARKS
- Are you fucking crazy? We-
- DAWN
- Before you go any further and if
- you haven't seen already, we've
- been working on a project.
- Parks searches for "projects" in her search bar.
- PARKS
- I'm looking through your email,
- what do you want me looking at
- specifically?
- DAWN
- Phoenix Weapons Program, related to
- the PMC my brother's in.
- Parks searches that up.
- A string of emails shows up.
- Parks opens up one.
- INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY
- A subject strapped to a chair sits in it.
- IND DOCTOR
- Test subject 22, Jonathan Willis,
- early-30s, no prior history of
- violence.
- WILLIS
- Hey man, I just want to go
- home!
- IND DOCTOR (CONT’D)
- As we've found with previous
- subjects, the Darkheart serum
- causes those with no
- aggressive tendencies for
- five minutes.
- A doctor comes up behind him and injects Willis with a
- syringe.
- Willis starts to fight in his restraints.
- WILLIS (CONT’D)
- I'M GONNA FUCKING KILL ALL OF YOU!
- A clock behind him counts down the minutes. The video speeds
- up to three minutes. He still fights in his restraints.
- The video goes back to normal speed.
- Willis continues to fight in his restraints.
- WILLIS (CONT’D)
- GONNA KILL ALL OF YOU! I AM GOING
- TO FIND A WAY!
- Another subject is pushed into the room. He wears an orange
- jumpsuit. He look around in confusion.
- Willis's restraints come off. A scalpel sits on the table.
- Willis falls forward, then stands back up. The other test
- subject looks behind him.
- IND TEST SUBJECT
- Willis, it's me man! It's me!
- Willis tackles him to the ground and slices his throat open,
- then continues to stab into him.
- The video speeds up and stops.
- Willis stands up.
- WILLIS
- Oh god, what have I done?
- The doors open. Two Sentinel Securities PMCs shoot him dead.
- BACK TO:
- DAWN'S OFFICE
- PARKS
- Diaz... I shot reporter. Matthews
- was in there with him.
- Parks puts the phone on speaker.
- DAWN (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Who?
- He look at different emails.
- PARKS
- He was with us at Houston. I shot
- him after he bum rushed me with a
- knife, but he was tied down.
- Someone cut the rope.
- Parks scrolls through different pictures and stops at one. He
- taps a pen on the desk and puts on his lip.
- DAWN (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Yeah... Darkheart. I'm sorry,
- Parks.
- It's a picture of him. He shakes hands with a military
- Colonel. Matthews stands behind the Colonel.
- PARKS
- That's Colonel Wesley Tyler. How's
- he connected to all this?
- Parks takes out his notepad. He jots down, "Tyler a part of
- the Phoenix Weapons Program".
- DAWN (O.S.)
- (phone)
- I've never heard that name before.
- PARKS
- I'll figure it out later.
- Parks looks at the first email. A set of coordinates. Parks
- jots them down and sends them to another address.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What's Matthews's endgame?
- DAWN (O.S.)
- (phone)
- He never said anything about it. He
- keeps the people he knows in the
- dark.
- Parks shakes his head and massages his eyes.
- He tabs out.
- The doors that lead to the hallway open. Elena walks forward,
- two armed guards behind her.
- DAWN (O.S.) (CONT’D)
- Parks, you have company. Matthews
- has a woman, red hair, blue eyes,
- freckles. He's got a few security
- guys with him.
- Parks's eyes widen. Matthews holds a .22 Ruger to the back of
- his skull.
- PARKS
- Oh, no... Elena.
- DAWN (O.S.)
- (phone)
- Parks?
- PARKS
- I gotta go. Which way out?
- DAWN
- Only one and that's through four
- guys. I'll help you out where I
- can, I'll get to engineering and
- try to get you out that way.
- A flash drive sits plugged into a computer. Parks takes it
- out and ducks under a table. He grabs his keycard and starts
- to move.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- PARKS! I know you're in here! Come
- out and your wife doesn't take a
- bullet!
- He steps out to
- INT. LABORATORY - DAY
- Parks crouches down behind a desk. He gets his gun out and
- checks his ammo.
- PARKS
- Fuck.
- Parks stays down.
- MATTHEWS
- Search the area! Find him!
- Parks puts his gun away and stays behind a desk. He moves to
- another one as they enter his room. Elena still has a gun to
- her head as she walks forward. Tears roll down her eyes.
- Parks stays down and gets his gun back out as the group moves
- through.
- PARKS
- (whispering)
- Stick to the shadows...
- The room goes black.
- Gunshots ring out as the power begins to flicker.
- IND AGENT
- The hell was that?!
- An agent lays dead on the floor as Parks makes a break for
- the hallway. The three agents open fire on Parks.
- MATTHEWS (O.S.)
- STOP FUCKING SHOOTING YOU PRICKS!
- GET HIM! BRING HIM BACK TO ME!
- Parks continues to run. He holds a keycard as he does.
- The agents give chase behind him. Parks scans the card and
- goes to
- INT. UNDERGROUND HALLWAY - DAY
- Parks sprints through the hallway and holds his gun out
- behind him.
- The elevator opens up. Parks dives into it.
- ELEVATOR
- He slams his hand into the ground floor button.
- He keeps his weapon outside the elevator doors. They close as
- the three agents open fire on Parks.
- Parks sits there for a moment and catches his breath.
- The elevator doors open. He takes a deep breath.
- Parks steps out of the elevator.
- He gets out his phone and calls an uber.
- CUT TO:
- INT. POLICE STATION - DAY
- Parks bursts into Steele's office sits on the door.
- A wanted poster of Don
- He holds a flash drive. Parks holds a fearful look.
- PARKS
- Tell me you got my email, TELL ME
- YOU GOT WHAT I SENT YOU!
- Steele cocks an eyebrow.
- STEELE
- You've been blowing up my email all
- day Parks, why don't you just wait
- and-
- PARKS
- MATTHEWS HAS MY WIFE! I sent you
- all the evidence I have, now tell
- me we can put a stop to this
- insanity! Hawkins is dead and so is
- anyone able to testify against all
- of this! I got nothing left! This
- case took everything that I have. I
- can't do anything anymore.
- STEELE
- See Stanton.
- Parks looks exhausted.
- PARKS
- Fine.
- He steps out to
- STANTON'S OFFICE
- Parks takes a seat.
- STANTON
- What's the problem now Parks?
- PARKS
- You fuckin' crazy? What's the
- problem now? The problem is that
- the guy that's supposed to be
- Homeland Security is a Special
- Activities, spook, Stanton. The
- problem is he's holding my wife
- hostage. The problem is that
- Officer Turner is dead and I
- haven't heard from Detective
- Paulsen.
- STANTON
- Son... She's dead. Her husband shot
- her in the heat of the moment. And
- he was broken out of county. We're
- still looking for him.
- Parks cocks his head at that.
- PARKS
- Why would he do that?
- STANTON
- Years in the sandbox finally got to
- him. We think some of his
- connections in the military helped
- him out, but we don't have any
- names for sure.
- PARKS
- That makes literally no sense at
- all.
- STANTON
- I'll put it to you straight. You're
- officially on suspension with pay,
- pending an investigation regarding
- the group.
- PARKS
- That's nonsensical. You and I both
- know that.
- STANTON
- You know the drill, Parks. I'm
- disappointed in what you've shown
- me. Two weeks.
- Parks passes him his badge and service weapon.
- STANTON (CONT’D)
- We'll be looking for Elena.
- PARKS
- MATTHEWS HAS HER!
- STANTON
- GET OUT OF MY OFFICE, PARKS. We.
- Will. Find her.
- Parks gets out.
- INT. MICK'S BAR - DAY
- Parks walks inside with a defeated look.
- Don sits in there. Conrad and Kobel look at him, both with
- confused and shocked looks.
- Parks looks at the bartender.
- PARKS
- Irish coffee.
- He sits down between Don and Conrad. Conrad starts to reach
- for a handgun.
- Don looks down in fear.
- Parks looks at the two of them and sighs.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Please fuck off. I've had a long
- day and managed to get myself
- suspended again.
- Conrad cocks an eyebrow.
- DON
- Dave?
- PARKS
- You got my e-mail, right?
- DON
- Yeah, and I gotta get my daughter.
- PARKS
- I gotta get my wife. You get those
- coordinates?
- Don nods.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Good, because I'm solving this case
- alone.
- Kobel, Don, and Conrad look at Parks with a stunned look in
- their eyes.
- DON
- You're gonna end up dead, wife
- ain't going to have anyone to come
- home to.
- PARKS
- The only person that can save her
- is me, Paulsen.
- DON
- Let us help you!
- Parks downs a shot of whiskey.
- PARKS
- I know what I'm doing. If I don't
- come back, leak everything I sent
- you online. The coordinates are
- where they're most likely keeping
- your daughter. Experiments,
- Matthews, your daughter-
- DON
- Slow the fuck down, Parks.
- Don takes out his phone and scrolls through his emails.
- PARKS
- You don't hear from me tomorrow,
- leak everything.
- Parks takes another shot and steps out of the bar.
- DON
- Parks, wait!
- The door closes behind Parks.
- EXT. GUN STORE - DAY
- Parks goes inside of a gun store.
- INT. GUN STORE - DAY
- Parks sights in an AR, a look of solid determination in his
- eyes.
- He loads a magazine, puts it in a bag and looks at all the
- others.
- He steps out to
- INT. PARKS'S CAR - DAY
- Parks looks exhausted all the same.
- Parks looks at the AR in the rear passenger seat of his
- Toyota.
- He pulls into a parking lot and falls asleep. The car idles.
- GO TO:
- EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
- Parks's Toyota sits outside an office. The front of it reads,
- "Department of Homeland Security - Phoenix".
- The door swings wide open as Parks watches the last agent
- step out.
- He stands against the wall. Parks holds his shoes while he
- walks into
- INT. HOMELAND SECURITY BUILDING - NIGHT
- Parks takes out a flashlight and makes his way through the
- building.
- Parks walks by different individual offices and stops at an
- office that reads "ASAC Matthews".
- Parks takes a sigh and checks his pockets.
- PARKS
- Now would be a great time to know
- how to pick a lock.
- Parks kicks the door open and makes his way into
- MATTHEWS'S OFFICE
- Parks looks around. Nothing stands out with the exception of
- some files on the table.
- Parks shines a light around the room.
- Nothing really stands out. Some awards on a wall. Parks looks
- at some picture frames.
- Matthews sits there with a wife, a dog, and a child. They
- look happy.
- PARKS
- ...Even evil has family, doesn't
- it, Dave?
- He sets the picture frame back down.
- Parks continues to walk through the office and stops at a
- desk. Its nice wood glistens as Parks shines his light on it.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Fancy wood.
- Parks looks at the drawers below it.
- He opens a bottom one.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What the hell...
- Parks takes out his light. Different identities sit in his
- drawer. He puts the flashlight in his mouth as he sorts
- through a small group of passports and different law
- enforcement IDs.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Okay then.
- Stacks of money sit below the IDs.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Who the fuck is this guy...?
- The door opens.
- A JANITOR, (late-50s) walks in.
- The janitor lugs a vacuum cleaner behind him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Oh, fuck.
- The janitor flicks a light switch.
- JANITOR
- Getting some extra work done there?
- Parks nods.
- JANITOR (CONT’D)
- Well leave a light on then so I
- know which room to clean next! You
- need me to do a work order on the
- door?
- Parks nods again.
- JANITOR (CONT’D)
- You're the boss!
- He walks out. Parks closes his eyes and sighs. He continues
- to look through Matthews's things.
- Parks looks at the door.
- PARKS
- Hey buddy hold up!
- The janitor comes back in.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Can I borrow a screwdriver? I'm the
- IT guy.
- JANITOR
- Asian dude- IT guy. Of course.
- The janitor fishes around his pockets.
- PARKS
- I'll give it back, don't worry.
- JANITOR
- Alright, man.
- Parks takes a flathead screwdriver from him. The janitor
- steps back out.
- Parks goes back to the lock on the desk. He checks the door,
- then behind him.
- He jams the screwdriver into the lock and slams it in with
- his hand. The screwdriver pushes itself into the lock.
- Parks turns it.
- Parks pulls against the drawer. It doesn't open at first, but
- with some effort he pulls the drawer open. On top sits the
- cover for a badge wallet. Parks opens it.
- PARKS
- Oh, boy. I've done it now.
- Parks opens it. A CIA badge reveals itself next to CIA
- credentials "Michael Mayberry". Matthews's photo sits in it.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Oh fuck me, this is bad.
- Parks looks at a sealed envelope inside the desk. He sets the
- badge down on the desk.
- Parks opens up the envelope.
- A dossier.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What the hell is this...
- Parks opens it up.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Following the failed actions at MSR
- Houston, the agency looks to use
- enhanced humans in order to secure
- an American future in Afghanistan.
- The Phoenix Weapons Program will
- allow the
- Parks's eyes widen.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- The nanites make them stronger.
- They're a force that can take
- bullets and explosions better than
- the average person.
- Parks looks through the documents in the envelope.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Matthews sent soldiers to take guys
- out.
- He looks at one part of the text.
- "in order to secure an American future in Afghanistan"
- Parks shuffles through the envelope.
- A map sits between the papers.
- Parks looks at it and opens it up.
- Highways are highlit along with red circles.
- Above the police stations are times with assorted numbers.
- A date sits on top of the map. December 29th, 2020.
- Parks checks his phone. It's December 19th.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- What the fuck?
- Parks starts to put it together in his mind.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- The Phoenix Weapons program...
- His mind turns to that of the desert.
- EXT. DESERT MOUNTAINSIDE - DAY
- The insurgents fire down into the convoy below.
- His mind goes back to the

- it.
- EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
- Parks runs outside. Black suburbans pull into the lot.
- Parks makes a break for his sedan and gets to the rear
- passenger door.
- He throws the documents into the back of it. He goes to the
- driver's seat of his car and pops the trunk.
- Parks puts on his AR. The suburbans stop. Agents step outside
- and raise weapons at him.
- Matthews steps around.
- MATTHEWS
- Detective!
- Parks raises his rifle at him.
- PARKS
- You gonna appeal to my sense of
- reason, Matthews? Huh? Do you
- prefer Mayberry?
- Matthews's expression changes to that of sheer horror.
- Parks gives a grin.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- How long have you been turning kids
- into weapons? Injecting them with
- nanites and god knows what.
- Stopping anyone that gets in your
- way.
- Parks carries a crazed look in his eyes.
- MATTHEWS
- Parks, think of Ele-
- Parks fires two rounds into Matthews's chest. He raises his
- rifle, only to have something hit him in the neck.
- Parks falls down.
- MATTHEWS (CONT’D)
- Get him to Warehouse Sierra, we're
- out of here before the locals start
- asking questions.
- Steele stands next to him.
- STEELE
- We out of the woods yet?
- MATTHEWS
- Get the car and shell casings out
- of here, then meet me at the
- warehouse.
- INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY
- Parks sits in a cold freezer. A dim light shines above him.
- Another light across the room shines over a tied up Elena.
- Parks's hair is wet, his face covered in scratches. He has a
- black eye.
- Blood runs down her legs.
- ELENA
- Dave... Make them stop, please...
- PARKS
- I've told them everything, baby. I
- told 'em all about the case.
- Matthews appears out of the shadows and hits slams a pipe
- wrench into Parks's leg.
- MATTHEWS
- Evidently, not fucking enough
- Davey!
- Matthews takes out his Ruger .22 and walks over to Elena.
- He sticks the barrel of the gun to her leg.
- PARKS
- I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ELSE,
- MATTHEWS!
- MATTHEWS
- Lies and excuses, Davey.
- Matthews fires the Ruger into Elena's leg. Elena lets off a
- scream of pain.
- ELENA
- DAVEY, WHY?!
- Elena cries out in pain as two more men step out of the
- shadows.
- MATTHEWS
- Now while I wait for you to make up
- your mind, my partners are going to
- have some fun with your wife.
- Parks's eyes widen as he struggles in his binds.
- ELENA
- Dave?
- Parks's eyes widen as Matthews pulls up a chair with a grin.
- Three men appear behind Parks and drag Elena in her chair
- into another room.
- PARKS
- No, no! I told you everything god
- damn it!
- Elena's screams echo through the warehouse.
- Parks sits there. Tears roll down Parks's eyes as more
- screams ring out.
- Matthews sits there and checks his watch.
- Time passes as more bags build in Parks's eyes. The screams
- are loud at first and sound more hoarse-
- -Then they stop.
- Elena crawls out of the room. Parks's eyes carry a thousand
- yard stare.
- MATTHEWS
- Ready to talk yet, Dave?
- PARKS
- Just let me die.
- Matthews comes closer to Parks.
- MATTHEWS
- Her first.
- Matthews turns his Ruger to face Elena and pulls the trigger.
- Elena falls down, dead.
- The room goes silent.
- Parks lets off a slow and quiet laugh.
- It increases. Parks starts to get louder and faster with it.
- Parks lets off a weak smile.
- PARKS
- You're a stupid fuck, you know
- that?
- Matthews looks at Elena, then at Parks.
- MATTHEWS
- Yeah?
- PARKS
- Well, you planned out the whole
- whack everyone that gets in your
- way part down. Good job.
- Parks gives a smile.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- But you. Fucked. Up, Matthews,
- Mayberry- Whatever the hell your
- name is.
- Matthews watches him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- If you're really trying to play the
- federal agent, a law enforcement
- guy, you of all people should know
- that killing one tends to the bring
- some ungodly heat. This ain't
- Mexico, Marcus.
- MATTHEWS
- I can take it.
- PARKS
- So did the Guadalajara Cartel back
- in the 1980's.
- MATTHEWS
- You seem to know your history.
- PARKS
- I spent a lot of time reading on
- deployment. Crime novels- The shit
- that made me want to get back on
- the road. But partner, I don't
- think you know, get, or even have
- the faintest idea of what's coming.
- Parks spits some blood out on the floor next to him.
- PARKS (CONT’D)
- Double homicide? Suspended cop gets
- too close to a case and then
- murdered? People are gonna ask
- questions.
- MATTHEWS
- I got people handling that-
- PARKS
- Yeah, on the law enforcement end of
- the stick.
- Matthews's eyes widen.
- MATTHEWS
- What the hell are you talking
- about?
- PARKS
- Diaz, he left a flash drive on the

- Everything he'd been watching and
- waiting for. All on that drive.
