He lived peacefully for much of his early life; eating, sleeping, playing and going to school like the other children his age. However, his quiet life was not to last, for one day his village was attacked by the vile dragon, Yamata no Orochi. Date's family was unable to do anything before the wyrm, as his relatives were all scholars and pacifists, not samurai. Unfortunately, words and numbers could scarcely scratch Orochi's scales, so they fled the village to start anew. Date then realised that not every problem can be solved with intellect; for all his family's knowledge, their sharp tongues were meant to move hearts, not pierce them. In secret, he decided to take up his own sword and slay Orochi himself.

[indent]Date spent many sleepless nights honing his skills. Every morning at dawn, he would venture into Orochi's lair to put his training for the night to the test, only to be blown away by Orochi's powerful roar. Afterwards, he would return home and begin his training afresh, hoping to someday cut through Orochi's roar and plant his sword down his neck. One day, Date's grandfather found him training out in the woods. He did not punish him, but rather recounted the story of his family's ancestor, a blacksmith who fought Orochi in the past. Like Date, the blacksmith's village was destroyed by the wyrm. Swearing revenge, he forged a sword that could split sound, allowing him to pierce through Orochi's defences and kill him. The sword, known as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, was heralded as the sharpest ever made. Armed with his creation, the blacksmith carved his way through Orochi's roar and was just barely successful in dealing him a mortal wound
