  7. Chapter 62. Training
  8.
  9. Ruby had asked Weiss to come train with her in the forest today so they could work on their partner attacks and practice combined techniques.
  10.
  11. Naturally, Weiss was never one to pass up an opportunity to practice and perfect her skills if she could spare the time, so she agreed and followed Ruby out into the forest on campus.
  12.
  13. Once they were a good distance into the trees to begin, Ruby cracked her fingers and drew Crescent Rose.
  14.
  15. "Allll righty! Are you ready, Weiss?"
  16.
  17. "As I'll ever be, I suppose."
  18.
  19. She said it with feigned indifference, but smiled as she drew her rapier.
  20.
  21. "Okay! Oh! Wait, one last thing before we start." Ruby darted close without warning, pecked Weiss on the cheek, and then jumped back. "For good luck!"
  22.
  23. Weiss blushed at the sudden kiss and instantly got to chiding her partner.
  24.
  25. "Ruby! Now isn't the time for-"
  26.
  27. "Can't catch meeee!"
  28.
  29. And with that, Ruby took off into the trees, pelting through them like a small red blizzard, trailing rose petals behind her.
  30.
  31. Weiss rolled her eyes before tearing off after her. She followed Ruby into the trees, easily able to track her, not only because of the petals, but because as her partner and girlfriend, Weiss knew exactly where she was most likely to go.
  32.
  33. After running a short distance, Weiss paused and looked up, knowing Ruby was crouched somewhere in the branches.
  34.
  35. "You're too predictable, Ruby," she called out. "You'll have to try better than th- ah-!"
  36.
  37. Weiss shrieked when she turned around and suddenly found Ruby dangling upside-down from a tree branch right in front of her. Ruby managed to poke her partner's nose and call out "Boop!" before jumping away.
  38.
  39. As Weiss recovered from the surprise, she pawed at her nose.
  40.
  41. "I see you've been training with Nora again..."
  42.
  43. "Maaaaaybe~"
  44.
  45. "Ruby, would you please take this seriously?"
  46.
  47. "Awww but that'd be no fuuuun!"
  48.
  49. "That isn't the point!"
  50.
  51. Exasperated, Weiss rounded on the spot where her partner had previously been standing, but again, Ruby was already gone, vanished in a haze of red petals.
  52.
  53. She kept doing that, darting around to Weiss' back or blind side and then disappearing as soon as Weiss turned around to face her.
  54.
  55. The heiress was spinning in circles and was beginning to get dizzy now. She could still hear Ruby's giggles echoing around the forest as she took up her next hiding spot.
  56.
  57. Weiss focused on the noises her partner was making as she moved around. Once she was certain she knew where Ruby was hiding, Weiss raised her sword and fired a shot of lightning.
  58.
  59. The selected tree splintered and crumbled, revealing a certain brunette. Ruby's smug snickering was cut off the second her hiding spot was revealed.
  60.
  61. Weiss could assume they weren't going to be practicing their joint attacks, but were mock battling instead. Therefore, she showed no mercy as she took aim at Ruby's hiding spot.
  62.
  63. But just as she fired the shot, Ruby managed to leap out of the way, and took off running once again.
  64.
  65. Weiss groaned and gave chase. But as she started charging forward, she felt something from behind, a slight contact above her right ear. When she whipped around, she found Ruby there, slipping a red rose into her hair.
  66.
  67. "There!" she chirped. "Weiss, you're so pretty!"
  68.
  69. "Ruby!"
  70.
  71. "Can't catch me!"
  72.
  73. And again, she was gone.
  74.
  75. Weiss growled, irked at the fact that Ruby really did seem to just want to flirt rather than actually practice. And while Weiss didn't particularly mind the former, she would prefer to get at least a bit of the latter done today.
  76.
  77. But she was finished chasing Ruby. By doing so, she was running right into all of her partner's little traps.
  78.
  79. So this time, when Ruby tore off, Weiss stayed perfectly still in her spot. She sprinkled a small bit of ice around herself in the grass, then made sure there were no overhanging branches nearby Ruby could access from above.
  80.
  81. As such, Weiss began her tactful waiting game.
  82.
  83. And it wasn't long at all before Ruby realized Weiss wasn't coming after her. So with a pout, she made her way back and found her girlfriend standing in the same place where Ruby had left her. Weiss gave her an expectant glare, and Ruby caved.
  84.
  85. "Sorryyyy! I know we should've been training. I just- waah!" Her boot slipped on a bit of the ice Weiss had cast, and Ruby ended up on the ground. "Owwie!"
  86.
  87. Weiss couldn't help but chuckle.
  88.
  89. "That is for not taking our training session seriously," she chided gently, making her way over. Weiss balanced herself perfectly, even on top of the thin layer of ice. She reached her hand down with a smug smile.
  90.
  91. Ruby sniffled and accepted, whimpering as she smoothed out her dress. Weiss pulled her up with one swift motion, then caught her swiftly as they began skidding – or rather skating – on the small ice rink Weiss now created for them over the grass.
  92.
  93. Ruby's jaw dropped as she let out a small squeal, her sore back already forgotten. Weiss kept her close and guided her along the ice.
  94.
  95. "And this," Weiss leaned in and kissed Ruby's cheek. "Is for the rose."
  96.
  97. Ruby giggled and kissed Weiss on the lips.
  98.
  99. And Weiss wasn't opposed to kissing back.
  100.
  101. After all, she'd gotten a bit of training done today.
  102.
  103. She thought she deserved to get a bit of flirting in as well.
  104.
