  193. History:
  194.
  195. The organ was built 1743-1746 by organbuilder Zacharias Hildebrandt.
  196. Hildebrandt reused the old decorated organ case of the old organ built
  197. by Thayssner in the years 1696-1705. The organ was proofed ("Orgelprobe")
  198. on September 27th, 1746 by Johann Sebastian Bach and Gottfried Silbermann
  199. (Hildebrandt was a pupil of G. Silbermann). J. S. Bach also worked as an
  200. organ consultant for this project. In the 19th century the organ was
  201. extensively rebuilt. In 1933 the action was electrified by E. F. Walcker
  202. organbuilders. 66 percent of the pipes by Hildebrandt are lost and a lot
  203. of the surviving pipes are not on their original location on the chest. So
  204. it is not a Hildebrandt-organ but more or less an organ with Hildebrandt-pipes
  205. and an old Thayssner-case. In the year 1992 there was a symposium at Naumburg
  206. which decided together with a commission of organ consultants/organists to
  207. reconstruct the organ to its original state dating from 1743-46. This work is
  208. currently done by organbuilder Hermann Eule from Bautzen. It is planned, that
  209. in September 1996 (250 years after its completion) the Rueckpositiv will be
  210. playable again. (Now, 1999, the Rueckpositiv is playable.) In 2000 the whole
  211. organ was restored and playable again.
  212.

  214. Timetable:
  215.
  216. 1696/1705 organ built by Zacharias Thayssner
  217.
  218. 1743 J. S. Bach made a proposal for a repair of the organ
  219. to the local authorities
  220.
  221. 1743/46 Totally new organ built in the old case by Zacharias Hildebrandt
  222.
  223. 1834 Organ repaired by organbuilder Friedrich Beyer from Naumburg:
  224. some stops revoiced, pitch raised 1 halftone (pies shortened)
  225.
  226. 1865 Organ repaired by Friedrich Ladegast, some changes made by Beyer
  227. removed, Posaune 32' exchanged by Violonbass 32'
  228.
  229. 1912/15 Oskar Ladegast (son of Friedrich L.): chests of the Oberwerk
  230. replaced by pneumatic cone chests, pitch changed (pipes shortened
  231. and changes in the key action), some Hildebrandt stops removed
  232. and replaced by 'modern' stops
  233.
  234. 1928 Plans to rebuilt the whole organ (reusing some Hildebrandt stops)
  235. (organist Wilhelm Nichterlein)
  236.
  237. 1931 Organ visited by Chisthard Mahrenholz as consultant: recommended
  238. to restore the organ to its original (Hildebrandt) state
  239.
  240. 1931/33 Organ rebuilt by organbuilders Walcker: original pipes from
  241. Hildebrandt retained, also the chests and some parts of the
  242. old console, but: new electropneumatic action with a new console,
  243. pipes shortened again (3rd time), new pipes added
  244. Before and during the restauration the whole organ in all details
  245. was photographed, these photos now are an important historic document.
  246.
  247. 1964 First trial of organbuilders Eule to restore the organ
  248. towards its original state
  249.
  250. 1976 New plans to restore the original action, i.e.
  251. electropneumatic-->mechanical
  252. action
  253.
  254. 1992 Symposium at Naumburg recommended to bring the organ back to
  255. its original state as in 1746
  256.
  257. 1993 Contract with organbuilders Eule to restore the organ:
  258. detailed investigations of the history of the organ
  259. using the old photos from 1932. The existing old pipes
  260. from Hildebrandt (also their metal composition) was
  261. analyzed and missing pipes were built in the same manner.
  262. The shortened pipes were brought back to their original length.
  263.

  283. - to document this organs sound before its restoration
  284. - to make a financial contribution to the restoration, through profits
