Here's a straight lift of the obit of Harold "Hal" Snook, from the Napa Valley web site. He's worth mentioning in connection with the Zodiac case for three reasons, I guess. First, he was on the scene at Berryessa - the phone box he was called to first, then to Bryan's car - indeed he was one of the first practising forensic detectives in that neck of the woods. Second, he had his own crime lab, access to lots of materials and information, and friends in high places in other crime labs and crime centers - including newsmen (since he was himself an ex-newspaperman.)
Last, his signature's at the bottom of a report which people often say looks like the same kind of handwriting on The Zodiac's letters. Well, some do. I can recall Trav and I discussing this a while back, and not being so sure.

Harold K. “Hal” Snook passed away on July 28, 2010. The son of John and Mary Snook, Hal was born on April 21, 1925 at Calpella, Calif., the last of six children.

He is survived by his wife Barbara and sons Keith, Larry and Randy, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hal served in the Army in the enlisted ranks for three years during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines. He served another three years as an Air Force officer during the Korean War.

Hal graduated from San Jose State College in 1949, where he met and married Barbara Parker, his wife of 60 years. He worked as editor of the Western Sentinel in Etna, Calif. and as editor of the Napa Journal before being recalled to active duty in 1951.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Hal, after completion of his military service, opened a sporting goods store in Napa.

In 1961 Hal joined the Napa Police Department as a dispatcher and in 1962 became a deputy at the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. He specialized in crime scene and narcotic investigations and was in charge of the crime laboratory. He was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court as an expert in narcotics and fingerprint identification. He also taught scientific crime investigation for the criminal justice department of Napa Community College.

Hal retired in May 1980 and opened a jewelry and fossil business. Hal and his wife cut the stones and did custom metalwork on the jewelry they sold. They also dug and prepared fossil fish from Wyoming and sold them to museums, dealers and collectors worldwide.

Hal was a member of the California Narcotic Officers Association, Napa County Peace Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, National Rifle Association and the Napa Rock and Gem Club.
