- >I got my hands on the 2.0 theatre booklet the other day and there's an interesting interview that says that when they were making the TV series Anno and the staff had totally different interpretations of the story and characters; Anno himself says that when Shinji says he doesn't want to pilot anymore he actually means it, while in the actual show the staff animated it the opposite way; When he leaves in episode 19 you see him at the train station at Hakone, and then when you see him again he's in a shelter at the geofront; The train station is literally an entire fucking mountain away, but he ended up going back all the way to the shelter because, according to the staff (names were named but I can't recall who at the moment), they interpreted it as Shinji not really meaning it, like a kid in a fight with their dad yelling "yeah well then I'm just not going to study anymore"- He knows, deep down, that he has to do it, and will. He just wants to say that he won't because fuck dad.
- >Also the interview makes it clear that the fuckers really are just making it up as they go along; 1.0 and 2.0 were worked on at the same time completely independent of each other, and when making 2.0 Anno just gave them input and vague directions and had the right to veto shit and let them go crazy; The instructions they had on Mari when working on 2.0 was "introduce this new character" and they were told that they didn't even actually had to use her; Having her stand somewhere silently was enough. They used her in the end to carry out Anno's order of "breaking" Eva; He says that all the characters in Evangelion are extensions of him, and that the only way to break it is by introducing a character that isn't, and that's Mari. Her personality and presence is supposed to be out of place in the show, because that's the entire point of her character.
- >Tsurumaki says he doesn't think Anno actually likes sentai, his exact words being that he thinks Anno likes sentai only "as a joke". Anno prefers Kamen Rider and Ultraman, while Tsurumaki prefers sentai; In fact Tsurumaki at first wanted to make Zeruel's second form in 2.0 be a woman with the head only half covered by the monster part, like one of the female villains from a sentai show (or Riderman). Anno told him to go fuck himself.
