  1. >That night was something special.
  2. >You and Jennette had laid out in a field, just talking.
  3. >Not even things relating to the situation at hand, but average stuff.
  4. >Jennette apparently liked indie rock and pop.
  5. >You promised to show her some good bands.
  6. >Though you didn`t really listen to much music, so it would be a bit difficult to match her tastes.
  7. >Soon, the conversation shifted to video games.
  8. >She really liked the pokemon game you had given her.
  9. >According to her, video games weren`t very advanced in her world, only being around Nintendo 64 levels.
  10.
  11. >As time went on, there were more pauses in the conversation.
  12. >During one of these lapses, you got a good look at her.
  13. >She... well, she was stunning.
  14. >Exotic and out of the ordinary, but still a beautiful woman.
  15. >The way the moonlight was casted upon her face, as she gently smiled at you, as you took her hand in your own.
  16. >She had let you forgive yourself.
  17. >You had let her have a friend in this world.
  18. >And that was all either of you wanted for.
  19.
  20. "So, what now?"
  21. >"Let`s go inside. I`m cold."
  22. "Good idea."
  23. >You helped her to her feet and both of you walked to your house.
  24. >There was a brisk wind coming in.
  25. >The trees and grass swayed in the breeze.
  26. >There was not but a single cloud in the sky.
  27. >But the stars, they were amazing.
  28. >Jennette seemed to share your opinion.
  29. >"The sky sure is pretty. I wonder... what it`s like out there."
  30.
  31. "That`s a question that I`ve thought about for a long time."
  32. >You looked at her.
  33. "Though I finally think I have an answer."
  34. >She turned her attention back to you.
  35. >"Well... what do you think it`s like?"
  36. "A lot of it is empty. There are a lot of places without life or anything at all."
  37. >You looked up at the moon.
  38. >A mat of fallen leaves crunched underneath your feet as you both walked.
  39. "Though there are things worth going out there to find. Extraordinary things."
  40. >You could hear the gradually fading calls of insects along the path.
  41. >The call of an occasional owl echoed through the trees.
  42. "Just like you."
  43.
  44. >She seemed to avoid meeting your eyes as you said this.
  45. >Though she was smiling... and blushing.
  46. >"I... well... I`m tired of this!"
  47. >She reached up, put her arms over your shoulders, and kissed you.
  48. >It only lasted a second, but the surprise took your breath away.
  49. >"Come on, let`s get inside. I`m really cold out here."
  50. "R-right. Yeah."
  51. >You were sure your cheeks were beet red.
  52. >Goddamnit you weren`t prepared for that.
  53. >The both of you continued down the path and arrived at the front door.
  54. >You fumbled with the keys for a moment, then unlocked the door.
  55. >It creaked as you held it open for Jennette.
  56. >"Thanks. I`m gonna go bundle up on the couch."
  57. >You closed the door behind you and deposited your jacket on a hook on the wall.
  58.
  59. >Jennette had already kicked her shoes off and was curled up in that quilt.
  60. >She always slept with that.
  61. >Even though it was warm in the house, she was still shivering.
  62. >You had the perfect fix for this.
  63. >You walked into the kitchen and made sure you had what you needed.
  64. >Yep, everything was there.
  65. >You made some hot cocoa for you and her.
  66.
  67. >You walked into the living room holding two plates with mugs of cocoa balanced atop.
  68. >"That smells good..."
  69. >You handed her a plate and sat down next to her.
  70. "Drink up. But let it cool f-"
  71. >She lifted the mug to her face and took a sip.
  72. >"This is chocolate? Why haven`t you made this before? It`s literally the best thing I`ve ever had!"
  73. >Though the milk you had used was almost boiling not a minute ago, Jennette drunk down a large amount of it in a few seconds.
  74. >"Ah, that`s good..."
  75.
  76. >She downed the rest of it in over the course of a few more seconds.
  77. "You good? Want some more?"
  78. >You offered your mug.
  79. >"Thanks. I needed this."
  80. >She took the mug from your hand.
  81. >You felt her other arm go around your back.
  82. >She pulled you closer and wrapped the blanket around you as well.
  83. >"Sorry. I`m really cold."
  84.
  85. "It`s okay."
  86. >You put your arms around her and held her close.
  87. >She finished off the rest of her cocoa and set the mug down.
  88. >Then she nestled up against you and sighed.
  89. >"Thanks... For everything."
  90. "Hey, I`ve got you to thank for... well, a new outlook on life. Everything`s changed for the better."
  91. >"It has, hasn`t it? I never thought I`d meet a human. No less... fall in love with one."
  92. "You were so afraid though."
  93. >She laughed for a moment.
  94. >"Yeah, and you shot me! I mean, my fears were valid for a little bit, you know."
  95. "Mhmm. You did attack me though. But hey, we`re all okay now."
  96. >"Yeah... we are. And we will be, as long as we`ve got each other."
  97.
  98. >She leaned on your shoulder.
  99. >"I`m not sure what to feel right now. So much has happened..."
  100. >You saw her solemnly looking down.
  101. >"I`m sorry, but I`m thankful. I feel safe but I`m still afraid. I... I want to go home."
  102. >She looked up at you.
  103. >"But I want to be with you."
  104. "I can come with you, you know. There`s nothing here for me."
  105. >"Wait... you`d do that? Just leave everything behind?"
  106. "There`s nothing here to leave behind except broken hopes and bloody memories. I`d be grateful for a change of pace."
  107.
  108. >You wondered if this was true.
  109. >Well, the only thing keeping you going was the hollow pursuit of revenge, trying to find the man that killed your family.
  110. >You remember the night after your third job.
  111. >The first and last time you took a contract against a normal person.
  112.
  113. >You picked the lock of the target`s front door and headed inside.
  114. >They were supposed to be home alone today.
  115. >This should be easy.
  116. >You proceeded around the corner of the vividly painted hallway.
  117. >Gun raised, ready to fire.
  118. >Nobody in the living room.
  119. >Dining room was empty.
  120. >The entire downstairs contained a stunning lack of people.
  121. >So you headed up to the second floor.
  122.
  123. >You heard someone talking.
  124. >"This isn`t good. I think he`s here."
  125. >Muffled voices followed.
  126. >Who was he speaking with?
  127. >Well, you would find out in about three seconds.
  128. >You silently cracked the door open and peeked inside.
  129. >Your target was just sitting there on the side of a bed.
  130. >Waiting completely unarmed.
  131. >"I see you. Come on in."
  132.
  133. >Well, your cover was blown.
  134. >No big deal; there shouldn`t be anyone else here anyways.
  135. >"You`re here to kill me, right?"
  136. >You nodded.
  137. >"Can I ask you something?"
  138. "What is it?"
  139. >The man looked oddly content as he stared into your eyes.
  140. >"Are you here to hurt my family?"
  141. "No. I`m just after you."
  142. >There was a brief period of silence.
  143. >"Good. Then go ahead. It`s fine."
  144. >This... this wasn`t right.
  145. >He was way too calm about this.
  146.
  147. >"Don`t hurt daddy!"
  148. >A child came running out of the closet.
  149. >She must have been at most four years old.
  150. >The man yelled out at the little girl.
  151. >"Tina! Please go... you don`t need to see this."
  152. >Yet the girl ran up and began to hit your leg with her fists.
  153. >"Go away! Don`t hurt my daddy!"
  154. >You... you couldn`t do this.
  155. >The child was sobbing loudly while imploring you to leave them alone.
  156. >You leaned down and patted the girl on the head.
  157. "Don`t worry. I`m not going to hurt him."
  158.
  159. >You stood back up and looked at the father.
  160. "I can`t do this. I`ll find some way to get them off of your back. I`m sorry about all of this."
  161. >The man stood up and pulled his daughter into a hug.
  162. >"So... you`re not going to shoot me..."
  163. >He looked towards the ceiling and said something, likely thanking whatever deity they prayed to.
  164. "I`m going to head out and leave you to your business. But first, I`ve got to ask. Why was there a mark on your head?"
  165.
  166. >The man put his hand on his daughter`s shoulder.
  167. >"Hey Laura, go play. Everything will be okay.
  168. >The girl hugged her father`s leg.
  169. >"You`ll be okay, right dad?"
  170. >"Everything will be fine, don`t worry."
  171. >He hugged her then she walked out of the room.
  172. >The sight of that left a hollow ache throughout your body.
  173. >You still missed them.
  174.
  175. >"My son was in one of those gangs."
  176. >He looked down.
  177. >"And he was killed by them over some dumbass mistake or something."
  178. >Oh.
  179. >"So I went and got them back. Took them all out. The other gangs didn`t like that, so they`ve been sending you guys after me for a while."
  180. >This guy didn`t look like much, being at least fifty years old.
  181. >Wait, 'for a while'?
  182. "Have you been-"
  183. >"Yeah. Every hitman that`s come after me is now buried six feet under. You didn`t try anything though. That was never your intent, was it?"
  184. >The guy stood before you, staring into your eyes.
  185. >"I could tell that you didn`t want to do this the moment you walked in. It`s not hard to see that on your face."
  186. >He held out his hand, probably wanting you to shake it.
  187. >So you did.
  188. >"You`ve been given a chance to do more good than bad here. Just take out the ones that deserve it."
  189. >Then the guy brought you into a hug.
  190. >"I think you`re a good man. Prove me right."
  191.
  192. >You didn`t complete the contract, of course.
  193. >Your employers didn`t pay you, but you remained unpunished for your refusal to kill the guy.
  194. >It all worked out in the end, it seemed.
  195.
  196. >And this had all led to this somehow.
  197. >You and Jennette curled up on a couch, underneath a quilt.
  198. >She was asleep now.
  199. >You tried to get up to turn out the light, but she held on to you.
  200. >"What are you doing?"
  201. "I`m going to turn the light off."
  202. >"Okay..."
  203. >You flipped the switch and walked back to the couch, once again curling up with Jennette under the quilt.
  204. >"Are you done?"
  205. "Yeah."
  206. >"Good."
  207. >You felt her lean up and kiss your cheek.
  208. >"Goodnight."
  209. "Goodnight."
