  24. >haven't seen the bear that lived here
  25. >arrived too late to poke around
  26. >sulking in a cave for the day
  27. >goals for this expedition: loot and fun
  28. >don't really need the loot, just hoarding
  29. >like collecting cards, or something

  33. >need to stay in practice after all

  35. >couple of scouts and dogs

  43. >three sentries patrolling with dogs

  90. >mostly chit-chat, occasional "All clear here" from meeting sentries
  91. >spot a lone, bored looking scout
  92. >no dogs in sight
  93. >sneak in close
  94. >try my best, "aLL ClEaR HeRE"
  95. >sentry pales, looks around unnerved
  96. >try again, "nICe weATHer, aYE?"
  97. >sentry drops his spear, runs into camp
  98. >hear them arguing
  99. >decided to help myself to stuff
  100. >who's got two thumbs and a new spear?
  101. >also took the food, gotta feed the bear
  102. >sentry came back
  103. >brought another sentry, and dogs
  104. >arguing with each other over missing stuff
  105. >killing the mood, but meh
  106. >sentries shouting now
  107. >new sentry shouts"THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE!"

  109. >dogs start barking, both sentries freaking out
  110. >make the same growl as cats I remember

  208. >decide to answer their question, "SCREAM."
  209. >heave tied busybody at a scout
  210. >leap from the tree at other scout
  211. >impact knocks both out
  212. >scouts down, 2 busybodies left
  213. >remaining busybodies too busy screaming to fight
  214. >and then the dogs attacked
  215. >nearly buried by weight
  216. >kind of nice, aside from the biting
  217. >can't keep playing though
  218. >slip out of dogpile
  219. >spend rest if the night leaving false trails around

  242. >"NONE."
  243. >isn't an AIDS circle, doesn't bother me
  244. >definitely isn't twink
  245. >drag mage away into the night

  248. >still early in the night, plenty of time for games
  249. >sneak back to the camp
  250. >scouts and busybodies gathered up in the large tent

  252. >all the dogs are gone

  254. >like they ran out of rope or something

  260. >course they didn't fall for it, try small-talk

  291. >chant loudly, "NO MARK. NO AMMO. NO SAFE."
  292. >heave bag-o-mage into their tent

  296. >still looking for a temp bolt-hole
  297. >spot a nice hole to bury myself in
  298. >eagerly rush over

  300. >hit the ground hard enough to chip teeth
  301. >first time falling in years
  302. >nam was waiting for me
  303. >only see his eyes and a hand from the ground
  304. >holding my foot
  305. >gives me a glare, "You fucked up."

  307. >"You did it on purpose."
  308. >thought the bear was full from everything else
  309. >dead-eyed look now, "You should've known better. How long have you been here?"
  310. >don't really mess with bears, bro
  311. >"And all those times you played 'poke-the-bear' doesn't count"
  312. >was focused on playing around, wasn't paying attention
  313. >nam starts lecturing, "That's why your stuck here. You should have learned that years ago."

  315. >"This is your penance. Safeguard the remains back to the outpost."
  316. >survivors are doing that
  317. >get an annoyed look, "They left it where it landed. Retrieve it and get his remains to the outpost. Bring the pelt, too."

  330. >like walking through a blast furnace
  331. >can't rush, down to a slow jog
  332. >no joke, think bits of me melted off
  333. >in the western quadrant by nightfall
  334. >take a quick breather
  335. >how the heck did I get sunburns on gear??
  336. >keep pushing forward
  337. >spot a light just inside forest
  338. >twink sitting in a circle of candles
  339. >legit glad to see him
  340. >calls out to me, "Beast! I wish to talk."
  341. >good timing
  342. >call back "TALK. YES."
  343. >"Some of our men entered the forest a week ago, but we did not send them. Did you take them?"
  344. >"NO. JUST FUN."
  345. >"And my apprentice? Do you know what happened to him?"
  346. >thought mage smelled familiar
  347. >"DEAD. BEAR ATTACKED."
  348. >step into light to lay out the sack and pelt
  349. >"ACCIDENT. MENT TO BRING HERE ALIVE."
  350. >never want to play poker with twink
  351. >"Can you bring the men back?"
  352. >sounds like too much work

  370. >remains of it torn apart
  371. >3 sets of tracks split three ways
  372. >four sets dragging something, roughly heading southwest
  373. >ten going south, two north
  374. >choose north first
  375. >smallest group, and they going wrong way
  376. >find them close to sunset
  377. >a pair of sentries
  378. >trudging on despite growing dark
  379. >good for me, lets me sneak in close
  380. >close enough to hear them comment on strange oder
  381. >dead mage smell isn't fading, not good
  382. >pair pick up their pace
  383. >sentry 1 trips on a root
  384. >quickly pounce and hog-tie him
  385. >still managed to let out scream
  386. >sentry number 2 freaks out and makes a run for it
  387. >tree KO's sentry
  388. >bind him up nice n' tight
  389. >two down, 15 to go
  390. >only made one mistake
  391. >gotta carry both myself
  392. >end up dragging both back to starting point

  400. >find em in two hours, guess which it was

  402. >no compass, no map, and they keep pointing west when they say north
  403. >other 3 trying to corral 5 busybodies
  404. >busybodies and other sentries looking tired and frustrated
  405. >too many to tie up and carry off
  406. >might as well check around their projected path
  407. >get back in time to see...they're still arguing
  408. >drop off excess baggage nearby
  409. >made enough noise to attract attention
  410. >need to track down southwest group anyway

  412. >went back to broken tent and followed the last set
  413. >really easy to follow thanks to the drag marks
  414. >practically a direct path to outpost
  415. >scouts unaccounted, probably in this group
  416. >most likely why they ain't lost
  417. >eventually catch up to em

  445. >bayonet slices through the shaft like butter
  446. >3-round burst blinds him, flying brass gets him running again
  447. >finally got a nice routine after about an hour
  448. >single shot to redirect them, short burst to keep them motivated
  449. >only concerned about ammo now
  450. >end up using all but holdout mag driving cattle
  451. >group made good time with the magic power of adrenaline
  452. >only middle of the day
  453. >almost enough fun to blot out burning pain
  454. >twink still sitting in the candle circle, eyes closed
  455. >how long was he waiting? wonder if he's stiff
  456. >call out to him, "MEN RETURN. PROMISE KEPT."
