background: suyin was the result of an impulsive rendezvous between a lonely chinese soldier and a young and dumb korean woman. suyin's father, zheng, soon left as he was being stationed somewhere else without knowing he had impregnated her. her mother, sooah, was furious. after suyin was born, sooah parents disowned her. sooah was left to starve. but she didn't give up. she took on four jobs and came home every day with a new ache on her body. however as suyin grew up, sooah began to neglect her more and more, often leaving for "work" and then coming back a few days later drunk off her ass. one day, sooah suddenly announced she was getting married. the man she was marrying was an extremely wealthy ceo of a clothing company. sooah and suyin's lives were turned upside down. sooah's new husband, sangwook, drowned the two in gifts. the mother and daughter even managed to rekindle their relationship. things were seemingly perfect until sangwook's mask came off. he got bored of sooah, who was getting too "old" for his tastes. his attention turned to suyin. he would hug her a second too long or his hand would "accidentally" bump into her rear. at first, suyin didn't notice but he gradually became bolder. he would sit next to her as the dinner table and rub her inner thigh or slip his hand up her skirt. he would tell her to come sleep with him at night. suyin slowly became aware of what was going on, but she didn't know what to do about it. however the tipping point came when sangwook snuck into her room one night and tried to take her clothes off and to get her to have sex with him. completely terrified, understandably so, suyin screamed. sangwook immediately covered her mouth and told her to say that she had a nightmare when asked about her scream or else he would kill her before leaving. suyin began to pack her bags the moment he left and ran away from home the next day.

personality: on the exterior, suyin is a no-nonsense type of girl. she has no problem telling you the truth, even if it's ugly. she is very brave and tough, almost nothing can scare her. she is fiercely protective of her friends and will not hesitate to confront you if you talk shit about them. her motherly side comes out when she's with her friends as she is always looking after them. she is their rock. however she is dying on the inside. she's lonely, depressed, and weak. she is extremely insecure about herself, especially her body. she is constantly skipping meals and if she does eat, it's only small nibbles. suyin suffers from insomnia and takes loads and loads of sleeping medication. although she never self-harms with anything sharp because she is afraid her friends will notice, she uses a rubber band. at night, when her sleeping pills don't work, she just stays up the entire night pulling the rubber band as far as she can and watches it as it slaps her wrist, listening to the snap against her skin. she has slight androphobia due to the incident with her step-father and is hesitant to find romance, although she wants someone whom she can lean on. even she truly cares a lot for her friends, suyin cannot bring herself to open up to them and everything she does around them is usually faked.

his personality: youngjae is just a little ball of sunshine. unlike suyin, youngjae is a genuine person. he gives 100% to everything he does. he is constantly smiling and lights a room up when he walks into it. everyone who knows him likes him. he is very childish, unable to sit still and getting bored very quickly. he is rarely ever sad or mad. he is very good at reading people.

relationship: suyin is too scared to continue her relationship with youngjae and runs away from him.

how he acts around her: in the beginning, he was scared of her. her aggressiveness and straightforwardness intimidated him. he found the permanent scowl on her face to be unsettling and would constantly wonder what she would look like if she smiled. in the middle, once he began paying attention to her, he easily saw through her facade. he saw how depressed and lonely she was and pitied her. this made him want to befriend her and eventually fall in love with her. he is constantly dragging her to new places and to do things with him, much to her annoyance. he is unfazed by her grumpiness. he is always sneaking glances at her to see if she's having fun. he is the only person whom suyin told about her past with her step-father. he never wants to hurt her and wants her to be happy. at the end, youngjae does everything in his power to hold onto suyin and make it work. but he knows their relationship is slipping through his fingers and there's nothing he can do about it.

how she acts around him: in the beginning, she found youngjae to be frivolous and annoying. she envied how genuinely happy he was and how he made everyone around him happy as well. when he first began to approach her, she tried her best to push him away. half because she is scared of men and half because she didn't want to taint him with her brokenness. however during the middle, no matter how hard she fought it, she began to like him too. although she would pretend to be annoyed by his cheerfulness and company, she actually loved it. he was the happiest part of her life and she was eternally grateful for that. she trusted him enough to tell him about her past. at the end, suyin, leting her insecurity take over, breaks it off with youngjae. she thinks that he's too good for her and wants him to be with someone who won't drag him down.
