- **ROLLING DICE**
- Werewolf is a dice pool game, meaning you roll multiple dice at once, opposed to a single one. The dice used are d10s, and the number you roll for a given task varies based on what stat you're using. Most rolls are used by adding the number of dots in an *Attribute* with the number of dots in an *Ability*, but sometimes a trait like *Rage* or *Gnosis* is used on its own or in addition to the others. The goal is to get as many dice as possible to come up the same as or higher than a *Difficulty* rating; the default is 6, but it could be higher or lower.
- Let's take an example character; we'll call her Eyes-like-Doe. If Doe were trying to hack a computer, she would roll a number of dice equal to the dots in her Computer ability (say, 2), plus the number in her Intelligence attribute (3), for a total of 5 d10s. If it was just your average Joe's computer, it would be difficulty 6, but if it was a Pentex database, it could be difficulty of 8 or 9. It's just a normal computer, so it'll be 6. Doe rolls her 5 dice, and gets a 1, 4, 6, 7, and 3. Two of these dice came up as a 6 or higher, which are successes. but one die was a 1, which subtracts one of those successes; Doe has made 1 success. That's enough to do the job, but not any more than just scraping through. If she had rolled more 1s than she had rolled successes, that would be a *Botch*, which means the task failed spectacularly, usually with something bad happening; she could have damaged the computer, or been caught. If she had got 5 or more successes, though, that's an *Exceptional Success*! Something very good could happen to her, like she fins more information than she was expecting of use.
- Sometimes, you may want to do multiple actions at once; you will need to split your dice pool to do so. A split pool looks at the pools that would be used for both actions, and uses the lower one, divided between both. So if Doe wanted to hack that computer while staying unnoticed, she would compare her Computer 2 + Intelligence 3 pool (5), and her Wits 4 + Stealth 3 pool (7). 5 is a smaller pool, so she will use that many dice, but they're split up between two actions. So she would roll 3 of those dice to hack the computer, and 2 to keep quiet. If a Doe spends Rage, though, she could do both at once with her full pools, but those can't be split themselves.
- Some rolls can be bypassed entirely if a character is skilled or determined enough. A character can spend a *Willpower* point to get 1 automatic success on a roll she's going to make; you can only spend one point this way a turn, though. And if a character's dice pool would be higher than the difficulty of the task she's about to do, she can take a success instead of rolling. It'll count as just one success, though, so rolling even in these cases could be beneficial, if risky.
