  1. The following strat is designed to make the late game safer under certain conditions. It involves fighting Erika early so you can pick up the Rare Candy inside the warden's house when you go there after defeating Koga. Using the Rare Candy makes you a level higher for the rest of the game, which helps you one-hit and outspeed certain dangerous Pokemon.

  29. Here are the basic steps, with tips on when to use them described below:
  30.
  31. - Go for red bar off Silph Rival. If you don't get it but you have <37 HP, use Thunderbolt on Giovanni 1's Rhyhorn until you get it.
  32. - Rare Candy once after Silph Rival to reach Lv. 38 (don't do this strat if you're only Lv. 36 after Silph Rival)
  33. - Bike to Erika's gym after Silph Co.
  34.         > Exeggcute: IB
  35.         > Victreebel: EQ
  36.         > Tangela: IB
  37.         > Vileplume: EQ
  38. - Fly to Fuchsia. Use Elixer, then bike to Koga's gym.
  39.         > Drowzee: EQ
  40.         > Drowzee: EQ
  41.         > Kadabra: EQ
  42.         > Drowzee: EQ
  43.         > Don't menu before the second Juggler
  44.         > Drowzee: EQ
  45.         > Hypno: EQ+TB
  46.         > Koffing: X Acc, Drill
  47.         > Muk: Drill
  48.         > Koffing: Drill
  49.         > Weezing: TB, die to Selfdestruct
  50. - Bike to the warden's house. Get Strength, then open the menu. Super Repel, then scroll down to teach Strength to Squirtle. Then use Strength, move the boulder and pick up the Rare Candy.
  51. - Fly to Pallet Town, then open the menu. Scroll up four, and use all of your Rare Candies on Nidoking to reach Lv. 45. Then Bike to the water, and Surf to Cinnabar Mansion.
  52. - In the mansion, use a Super Repel a few steps after the Carbos, then scroll down to the bottom of the menu (where it says "Cancel"), using the Carbos first if you got it. Pick up the two Rare Candies, then open the menu to use them on Nidoking to reach Lv. 47. Exit the menu, grab the key and Dig out.
  53. - Fly to Cinnabar, walk to Blaine's gym, fight Blaine normally and use Dig after the fight.
  54. - Use Elixer, bike to Sabrina's gym, fight Sabrina normally and use Dig after the fight. Nidoking should be Lv. 48 after Kadabra.
  55. - Fly to Viridian and bike to Giovanni's gym.
  56.         > Rhyhorn: IB
  57.         > Machoke: EQ
  58.         > Machop: EQ
  59.         > Machoke: EQ
  60.         > Rhyhorn: X Special, IB

  65. - Bike to fight Viridian Rival.
  66.         > Pidgeot: X Acc, X Speed, IB x2
  67.         > Rhyhorn: IB
  68.         > Gyarados: TB
  69.         > Growlithe: EQ
  70.         > Alakazam: EQ
  71.         > Venusaur: Drill
  72. - Fight Lorelei and Bruno as normal.
  73. - Your strategy for Agatha depends on your Speed and Special DVs.
  74.         WITH 13-15 DV SPEED AND 12-15 DV SPECIAL:
  75.         > Gengar: EQ (you're faster)
  76.         > Golbat: X Special, IB
  77.         > Haunter: EQ
  78.         > Arbok: EQ (X Speed first if you have a spare one, Golbat used Haze, you have 28-56 HP, and you can cure paralysis without losing too much time)
  79.         > Gengar: EQ
  80.         WITH 13-15 DV SPEED AND 0-11 DV SPECIAL:
  81.         > Gengar: EQ (you're faster)
  82.         > Golbat: IB x2
  83.         > Haunter: EQ
  84.         > Arbok: EQ (X Speed first if you have a spare one, you have 28-56 HP, and you can cure paralysis without losing too much time)
  85.         > Gengar: EQ
  86.         WITH 0-12 DV SPEED and 0-15 DV SPECIAL:
  87.         > Heal to 57+ HP before the fight if you can afford to
  88.         > Gengar: X Speed, EQ
  89.         > Golbat: IB x2
  90.         > Haunter: EQ
  91.         > Arbok: EQ (X Speed first if you have a spare one, Golbat used Haze, you have 28-56 HP, and you can cure paralysis without losing too much time)
  92.         > Gengar: EQ
  93. - Fight Lance as normal, but note that being a level higher means you'll take slightly less damage from Hydro Pump on most Special DVs.
  94. - Fight Champion as normal, except with a slight variation on when to use the X Special strat. You can use it with 10-15 DV Speed and 6-15 Special because you'll be a higher level for Alakazam and Rhydon.
  95.
  96. The main benefit of this strat is that it decreases your chance of dying to the Black Belt in Giovanni's gym. With perfect Attack and normal strats, you have a 13-15% chance of dying. With perfect Attack and this strat, you have a 1-2% chance of dying. This is because you're Lv. 48 for the first Machoke and Lv. 49 for the second. You get a damage boost for reaching Lv. 48, and you get Attack stat boosts with each level.
  97.
  98. ATTACK DV       % TO 1-SHOT MACHOKES
  99. 11              81, 85
  100. 12              81, 91
  101. 13              85, 96
  102. 14              85, 100
  103. 15              91, 100
  104.
  105. Most of the other benefits depend on your HP, Speed and Special DVs:
  106. - If you fought at least one encounter or the Hiker in Mt. Moon and your HP DV is 1-3 or 6-15, you'll stay in red bar for the entire Lorelei fight even if you took no damage from Koga until Lorelei. Normally, you'd come out of red bar on all DVs.
  107. - If you didn't fight encounters or the Hiker in Mt. Moon and your HP DV is 1, 6, 10-12 or 15, you'll stay in red bar for Lorelei. Normally, you'd stay in with DVs of 0-3 and 5-7.
  108. - With Speed DVs of 0-2, 5 and 7-9, you need one fewer Carbos for Dugtrio, Jynx or Sabrina's Alakazam.
  109. - With a Speed DV of 6, you need one fewer Carbos for Alakazam and don't have to kill an extra Mt. Moon encounter for Speed stat experience.
  110. - With Speed DVs of 10-11, you'll be faster than Champion's Alakazam after an X Special.
  111. - With a Speed DV of 13, you'll be faster than Agatha's Gengar after using 1 Carbos. Normally, you would be slower.
  112. - With Speed DVs of 14-15, you'll be faster than Agatha's Gengar without using Carbos. Normally, you'd be slower with 14 DV, and you'd need 1 Carbos to be faster with 15 DV.
  113. - With Special DVs of 0-5, you'll be guaranteed or almost guaranteed to 1-shot Lance's Aerodactyl with Ice Beam. Normally, the range is 66 percent with 0 DV and 91 percent with 5 DV.
  114. - With Special DVs of 6-7, you'll be guaranteed or almost guaranteed to 1-shot Champion's Rhydon with Ice Beam.
  115. - Regardless of your stats, you'll level up before Giovanni 2's Rhydon and skip the jingle. Normally, you'd level up after the Rhydon and get the jingle. Other red-bar level ups are the same.
  116.
  117. As you can see, how much time you'll save/lose greatly depends on your DVs. On average, you'll lose about 10 seconds with this strat but decrease your chance of dying by about 10 percent. With some DVs, such as 6 DV Speed, you might actually save time while reducing your risk. With perfect DVs, you'll lose about 6 seconds and decrease your chance of dying by about 12 percent.
