- Back in 2008, the uncontrollable and utterly devastating Reaper Virus smites Scotland, claiming thousands of innocent lives, and inevitably, putting the land in quarantine. However, almost three decades later, in 2037, the lethal virus manages somehow to re-emerge, and as a result, the Prime Minister summons a team of disposable heroes led by Major Eden Sinclair to retrieve possible survivors, and hopefully, a radical cure. But no one really knows what horrors remain hidden deep within the scorched and unstable quarantine zone.
- Great Britain, 2007. A deadly plague, known as the "Reaper Virus," has broken out, killing hundreds of thousands in its wake. In desperation, the British Government evacuates as many survivors as it can out of the infected area, and then builds a wall, preventing the remainder from escaping. Thirty years later, with the wall still up and the victims all but forgotten, the virus breaks out again. The Government decides to send a crack team of operatives, led by Major Eden Sinclair, into the hot zone to investigate the possibility of a cure.
- What a waste of time! And I, for one, am really fed up with the modern-times cliché "Don't expect to get much out of this movie, just go and enjoy your time, have some fun". How am I expected to enjoy my time, if the movie is a very poor blend of many films past, with nothing new? I HAVE watched those past great films, even if only action-packed they might have appeared to be, enjoyed them very much, thank you, and they, in the end, catapulted themselves into the cult classics that we love so much, best examples of their genre which are to be viewed over and over, anyway.<br/><br/>This film, however, has absolutely nothing new or meaningful to add to the mix. It is as if the producers said "let's take these details out of that movie, and those details out of this one, and make a film... Ooohhh, yeeess, yesssss, the sweet smell of the piles of money the unsuspecting movie-goers will pay us"... I mean, this is ridiculous! And I don't mean that because this is a raw action film and not a decent drama or comedy or historical or a musical piece with a great artistic value. I mean that because this movie just wastes my time with details that just don't fit together, looks like a poor collage, and rips of many good films of the genre.<br/><br/>My suggestion to you is, if you want to empty your mind, have some fun and pass some time, at least do it with a film, action or not, which deserves your dough, and doesn't cheat you this cheaply! (I am giving this movie 4 stars not because of the plot, but because of the occasional good cinematography and effects, nothing more!)
- I see about 20 to 25 new movies a year. Doomsday 2008 is not even worth paying for at the discount seats. Poor story line, not believable,The writing is not original , parts of story taken from other movies, plot is predictable. Acting is less that what you would expect from a "B" movie. Don't waste your money, don't even rent it. The special effects are not special at all. The goth makeup and wardrobe are unbelievable as is the whole mid evil sequence. It has been quite a while since I paid full price for a movie and left the theater feeling duped and ripped off. I really believe the writers are running out of good stories to tell. The recognizable name actors; Bob Hoskins, Malcolm McDowell and Adrian Lester must be pretty hard up or desperate for work to participate in this "BOMB" gmp
- Neil Marshall's flair for visceral action more than compensates for his script's lack of conceptual novelty in Doomsday. Principally South Africa-shot tale of a post-apocalyptic Great Britain cobbles together large chunks of "Escape From New York," "The Road Warrior," "28 Days Later" and "Resident Evil," but those with a taste for revved-up, splattery fantasy thrills won't be complaining.
- Thirty years after Britain successfully walled off Scotland to contain the spread of the Reaper virus, a particularly lethal virus that has infected millions, England is devastated to find that the virus has popped up again in London. Consequently, Major Eden Sinclair (<a href="/name/nm0593961/">Rhona Mitra</a>) of the Department of Domestic Security is asked to lead a team of operatives into the quarantine zone to find medical researcher, Dr. Marcus Kane (<a href="/name/nm0000532/">Malcolm McDowell</a>), who was last known to be working on a cure ...that is, if they can survive the survivors who have taken over Scotland. Doomsday is based on a screenplay by British screenwriter Neil Marshall, who also directed the film. Sinclair, Ben Stirling (<a href="/name/nm0604418/">Darren Morfitt</a>), and Cally Kane (<a href="/name/nm1769728/">MyAnna Buring</a>) are intercepted by a gunship carrying the new Prime Minster, Michael Canaris (<a href="/name/nm0641244/">David O'Hara</a>). He asks for the cure, and Sinclair produces Cally, explaining that she is immune to the virus and that they can use her blood to make a vaccine. Canaris informs Sinclair that he has no intention of producing the cure just yet. He would rather withhold it until such time as the virus has killed off the infected as a form of population control. Canaris invites her to come back to London with him, but Sinclair chooses to remain in Scotland and look for her mother at the address written on the note. Sometime later, Nelson uses that address to fly into the quarantine zone and locate Sinclair. She tells him of Canaris' plan and gives him a recording she made with her artificial eye of their conversation, giving Nelson all the proof he needs to bring down Canaris. In the final scene, she returns to Glasgow where she tosses Sol's (<a href="/name/nm0176660/">Craig Conway</a>) head to the punk cannibals, saying, "If you're hungry, try a piece of your friend." Realizing that Sinclair has defeated their leader, they begin cheering her as his replacement. The film gives three possibilities: (1) She stayed to look for her mother, (2) she stayed because she knew the hot zone was free of the virus but that London would soon be raging with it, and (3) she stayed to build an army amongst the punks to protect her should Canaris come looking for her. Crowd parties at Sol's show - "Dog Eat Dog" by Adam and The Ants.<br/><br/>Sol dances onstage with strippers - "Good Thing" by Fine Young Cannibals.<br/><br/>Sol dances onstage with men in kilts - "The Can Can" by Ariel Rechtshaid.<br/><br/>Talbot is brought out to the crowd - "Spellbound" by Siouxsie and the Banshees.<br/><br/>Sol's gang chases Sinclair, Stirling, and Cally on the road - "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.<br/><br/>End credits - "Club Foot" by Kasabian. The film's theatrical cut was rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Later, an unrated version was released on DVD and Blu-ray disc, adding more story to the film. a5c7b9f00b
