Shinji: ...*sigh* It’s no good. There’s no cell service and the busses and trains have all stopped too. ...There’s no way we can meet up like this.

シンジ
「街の中には誰もいないし…
しょうがない、シェルターに行こう」
Shinji: There’s not even anyone in the city... I should just head to a shelter. It’s not like I have any other choice.

(Dido walks nearby.)

Dido: ...

シンジ
(あの人…)
Shinji: That guy...

ディド
(やはり、ここだ…。
俺を引き寄せる何かがある…)
Dido: (This is definitely the place. There’s something drawing me here...)

シンジ
(避難するのが遅れたのかな…?)
Shinji: (Did he not make it to a shelter in time...?)

ディド
(この空気…ここで何が起きる?
いったん、離れた方がいいか)
Dido: (This sensation in the air... What’s causing it? It might be best if I leave for now.)

(Dido walks off.)

「あ…」
Shinji: Ah...

(不思議な感じの人だったな)
Shinji: (There was something really odd about that guy...)

(Misato’s car comes to a screeching halt next to Shinji.)

シンジ
「!?」
Shinji: !?

ミサト
「ごめーん、お待たせ!
特別非常事態宣言が出たんで、ちょっち遅れちゃった」
Misato: Did I keep you waiting? Sorry~! What with there being a whole state of emergency and all, I was just a little bit late.

シンジ
「葛城さん…?」
Shinji: Are you Miss Katsuragi?

ミサト
「ミサト、でいいわよ。碇シンジ君」
Misato: You can just call me Misato. You’re Shinji Ikari?

シンジ
「はい」
Shinji: Yes.

ミサト
「早速で悪いけど、
特務機関[NERV]の本部まで
一緒に来てもらうわ」
Misato: I know this is sudden, but you’ll be coming with me to the headquarters of the special organization [NERV].

シンジ
「特務機関…ネルフ？」
Shinji: Special organization...nerve?

ミサト
「そう、地球連邦政府直属の非公開組織」
Misato: Yep, it’s a private organization under the direct control of the Earth Federation.

シンジ
「父のいる所ですね…」
Shinji: And that’s the place where my father is...

ミサト
「まっねー。お父さんの仕事、知ってる?」
Misato: Well, yeah. You know about your father’s work, right?

シンジ
「人類を守る大事な仕事だと先生からは聞いてます。
これから、父の所へ行くんですか?」
Shinji: My teacher said it was an important job to protect humanity. Are we going to see him?

ミサト
「ええ。お父さんからIDもらってない?」
Misato: That’s right. Your father gave you an ID, didn’t he?

シンジ
「あ、はい」
Shinji: Ah, yes.

ミサト
「じゃ、この資料を読んどいてね」
Misato: Then go ahead and read the stuff inside it.


シンジ
「NERVの…父さんの仕事…。
なんかするんですか、僕は?」
Shinji: Am I going to be doing something for NERV’s...my father’s work?

ミサト
「………」
Misato: ...

シンジ
「そうですね…用もないのに、
父が僕に手紙をくれるはずないですよね」
Shinji: I should have known... Father wouldn’t have wrote to me if he didn’t need me for something.

ミサト
「そっか…苦手なのね、お父さんが。
あたしと同じね」
Misato: I see... So you’ve got some daddy issues too.

シンジ
「え…？」
Shinji: Huh...?

「連邦軍のモビルスーツ部隊、撤退していきます。
目標は、再び移動を開始」
Shigeru: The Federation Forces’ mobile suit squad is withdrawing. The targets have begun moving once again.

冬月
「第4の使徒…大した自己復元能力だな」
Fuyutsuki: The 4th Angel... Its regenerative ability is quite impressive.

ゲンドウ
「単独で完結している準完全生物だ。当然だよ」
Gendo: It is an independent near-perfect being, complete unto itself. It’s only natural.

冬月
「生命の実を食べたモノたちか…」
Fuyutsuki: One of the beings that ate from the fruit of life...

ゲンドウ
「ああ。
知恵の実を食べた我々を滅ぼすための存在だ」
Gendo: Indeed. They are entities that have partaken in the fruit of knowledge for the sake of destroying all mankind.

冬月
「…連邦政府からの通達だ。
本作戦の指揮権は我々に移譲された」
Fuyutsuki: ...We’ve received a message from the Federation. Control over this operation has been transferred over to us.

ゲンドウ
「決断が早かったな」
Gendo: A rather prompt decision.

冬月
「機械生命体や異星人、[赤い彗星]まで現れたからな。
極東方面軍は、これ以上の戦力を失うわけには
いかんだろう」
Fuyutsuki: Machine life-forms, aliens, even the [Red Comet] have made their appearance. The Far Eastern Army can’t afford to lose any more of their forces now.

ゲンドウ
「では、極東方面軍司令部へ通達。
ロンド・ベル隊を[第3新東京市]へ向かわせろ」
Gendo: Then notify the Far Eastern Army Headquarters. Tell them to send Londo Bell to [Tokyo-3].

冬月
「あれと戦わせるのか?」
Fuyutsuki: You want them to fight it?

ゲンドウ
「時間稼ぎと露払いをさせる。
例の巨人も現れるだろう」
Gendo: They will buy time as the opening act. I suspect the titan will appear as usual as well.

冬月
「並行世界から到来した、異星文明の兵器か…」
Fuyutsuki: The weapon from an alien planet in a parallel world...

ゲンドウ
「ある種のヒトであると同時に、
ヒトならざるモノだろう」
Gendo: I believe that while it is similar to a human, it is simultaneously something inhuman.

冬月
「その推測が事実ならば、実に興味深いが…」
Fuyutsuki: That would certainly be interesting, if that speculation turns out to be reality.

(A notification sounds.)

ゲンドウ
「…冬月、後を頼む」
Gendo: ...Fuyutsuki, I leave the rest to you.

(Gendo walks off.)

冬月
「3年ぶりの対面か」
Fuyutsuki: They’ll be meeting each other for the first time in 3 years...

シゲル
「第1、第3管区内に高熱源反応、多数!」
Shigeru: High energy heat sources have been detected in Districts 1 and 3! Several of them!

マコト
「いきなり現れたのか!?」
Makoto: They just showed up out of nowhere!?

シゲル
「ああ、前触れなんてなかった」
Shigeru: Yeah, no warning whatsoever!

冬月
(…やはり、嗅ぎつけたか)
Fuyutsuki: (...So they caught wind of it then, like we expected.)

シゲル
「副司令、識別完了しました!
[インベーダー]です!」
Shigeru: We’ve identified them, Vice-Commander! They’re [Invaders]!

冬月
「総員、第一種戰關配置。对地迎擊戰用意」
Fuyutsuki: All hands, level 1 battle stations. Prepare for ground level interception.

Episode 9
The 4th Angel


(Scene begins on a map screen of Tokyo-3. Invaders appear and immediately start attacking the city.)

シゲル
「インベーダーは地上都市部を無差別に攻撃!」
Shigeru: The Invaders are attacking the above ground urban areas indiscriminately!

冬月
「狙いが散漫だな。
地下のジオフロントを狙っているわけではない」
Fuyutsuki: They’re targeting randomly. So their goal definitely isn’t the underground GeoFront.

シゲル
「ロンド・ベル隊のラー・カイラム、
御殿場方面より進入!」
Shigeru: Londo Bell’s Ra Cailum is entering the area from the direction of Gotemba!

冬月
「早かったな」
Fuyutsuki: How expedient.

(Ra Cailum appears.)

トーレス
「艦長、NERV本部より
インベーダーの掃討命令が出ています」
Torres: Captain, NERV Headquarters have sent orders to mop up the Invaders that appeared!

ブライト
「事情を問い質す時間はないか。
各機を出撃させろ!」
Bright: I see there’s no time to question the situation. Launch all units!

(Londo Bell units launch.)

竜馬
「なんでインベーダーどもが
こんな所に出てきやがるんだ?」
Ryoma: The hell are Invaders doing here?

ユンナ
「彼らの求める何かが、ここにあるのでしょうか?」
Yunna: Perhaps there’s something here they’re looking for?

竜馬
「言っとくが、ゲッター線レベルは正常値だぞ」
Ryoma: That’s the thing, the Getter Ray levels are normal here.

弁慶
「お前たち、話は後だ。
NERVからインベーダーの掃討命令が出ている」
Benkei: Talk later, you guys. Right now we’ve got orders from NERV to clean up the Invaders here.

バナージ
「命令って…」
Banagher: Orders, they say...

カミーユ
「どうしてNERVがロンド・ベルに?」
Kamille: Why can NERV give orders to Londo Bell?

弁慶
「連邦政府からの通達で、
岡長官が作戦の指揮権を彼らに移譲したんだ」
Benkei: It’s a Federation directive. Chief Oka’s right to command the operation has been transferred to them.

シゲル
「長尾峠方面より高熱源体接近!
数は1!」
Shigeru: High energy heat source approaching from the direction of Nagao Pass! One unit!

冬月
「碇の予測が当たったか」
Fuyutsuki: Ikari’s prediction was right on the money.

(Didarion appears.)

ディーダリオン
「………」
Didarion: ...

冬月
「あれがディーダリオンか…データを取っておけ」
Fuyutuski: So that’s Didarion... Gather all the data you can on it.

マヤ
「了解」
Maya: Yes, sir.

メグ
「来てくれると思ってたわ、ディーダリオン」
Meg: I knew you’d come, Didarion.

竜馬
「あいつも[使徒]と戦うつもりか?」
Ryoma: He gonna fight the [Angel] too?

メグ
「そうだと思います」
Meg: I think so.

ディーダリオン
「………」
Didarion: ...

竜馬
「まあいい、露払いをやってやる。
インベーダーどもをぶちのめすぞ!」
Ryoma: Alright, time for the opening act. Let’s rip these Invaders apart!

(Battle 1 begins.)

(Battle 1 ends when all Invaders are defeated.)

Torres: Readings for all Invaders in the combat zone have disappeared!

Bright: Now for the Angel...!

「ラー・カイラムへ通達。
ロンド・ベル隊の機体を下がらせろ」
Fuyutsuki: Contact the Ra Cailum. Tell them the Londo Bell units are to stand down.

マコト
「彼らを援護に回した方が、
作戦の成功率が上がるのでは?」
Makoto: Wouldn’t we have better odds of success if we let them provide backup?

冬月
「これは碇の意向だ」
Fuyutsuki: This is what Ikari wants.

シゲル
「了解。通達します」
Shigeru: Understood. I’ll contact them now.

リツコ
「到着予定時刻を12分もオーバーよ、葛城二佐」
Ritsuko: Your 12 minutes past your ETA, Lieutenant Colonel Katsuragi.

ミサト
「ごめん、リツコ」
Misato: Sorry, Ritsuko.

リツコ
「彼が例の男の子ね」
Ritsuko: This is the boy we talked about, hm?

シンジ
「………」
Shinji: ...

リツコ
「技術局一課、E計画担当責任者、赤木リツコ。
よろしくね」
Ritsuko: I’m Ritsuko Akagi. Technology Division, Section 1, Chief Office of Project E. It’s nice to meet you.

シンジ
「は、はい」
Shinji: H-hi.

リツコ
「早速だけど、あなたに見せたい物があるの。
中へ入って」
Ritsuko: Now, there’s something I’d like for you to see right away. Come inside.

「こ、これは…!」
Shinji: Th-this is

「人の造り出した究極の汎用ヒト型決戦兵器、
人造人間エヴァンゲリオン。その初号機」
Ritsuko: The All-purpose Humanoid Battle Weapon Artificial Human Evangelion, the ultimate weapon created by human hands. This is Unit-01.

リツコ
「我々人類最後の切り札よ」
Ritusko: This is humanity’s final trump card.

シンジ
「…これも父の仕事ですか?」
Shinji: ...Is this also part of my father’s work?

ゲンドウ
「そうだ」
Gendo: Indeed.

シンジ
「!」
Shinji: !

ゲンドウ
「久しぶりだな」
Gendo: It’s been a long time.

シンジ
「父さん…」
Shinji: Father...

ゲンドウ
「フ…出撃」
Gendo: Hmph. Prepare to launch.

ミサト
「出撃!? 零号機は凍結中です!
まさか、初号機を使うつもりなんですか!?」
Misato: Launch!? But Unit-00 is still frozen! Don’t tell me you’re planning to use Unit-01!?

ゲンドウ
「そうだ」
Gendo: Indeed.

リツコ
「他に道はないわ、葛城二佐」
Ritsuko: There’s no other way, Lieutenant Colonel Katsuragi.

ミサト
「そんな…!」
Misato: You don’t mean...!

リツコ
「碇シンジ君」
Ritusko: Shinji Ikari.

シンジ
「は、はい」
Shinji: Y-yes?

リツコ
「あなたが乗るのよ」
Ritsuko: You’ll be the pilot.

シンジ
「!」
Shinji: !

ミサト
「リツコ!」
Misato: Ritsuko!

シンジ

Shinji: ...

「父さん…何故、呼んだの?」
Shinji: Father... Why did you call for me?

ゲンドウ
「お前の考えている通りだ」
Gendo: You already know why.

シンジ
「じゃあ、僕がこれに乗って戦えって言うの…!?」
Shinji: Then, you’re saying you want me to get in that thing and fight...!?

ゲンドウ
「そうだ」
Gendo: Indeed.

シンジ
「嫌だよ、そんなの! 何を今更なんだよ!
父さんは僕がいらないんじゃなかったの!?」
Shinji: I won’t, no way! Why are you trying to get me to do this now!? I thought you didn’t want me anymore!

ゲンドウ
「必要だから、呼んだまでだ」
Gendo: I called you because I have a use for you.

シンジ
「何故、僕なの…!?」
Shinji: But why me...!?

ゲンドウ
「他の人間には無理だからな」
Gendo: Because there is no one else who can.

シンジ
「無理だよ、そんなの…!」
Shinji: It’s impossible, I can’t do it...!

シンジ
「見たことも聞いたこともないのに、
できるわけないよ!」
Shinji: I’ve never even seen or heard about this thing before, there’s no way I can do it!

ゲンドウ
「説明を受けろ」
Gendo: You will be instructed.

シンジ
「そんな…!
できっこないよ!
こんなの、乗れるわけないよ!」
Shinji: There’s no way...! I just can’t do it! I can’t pilot that thing!

ゲンドウ
「乗るなら、早くしろ。でなければ、帰れ」
Gendo: If you are going to pilot, then be quick about it. Otherwise, leave!

Shinji: !

(The room shakes.)

ミサト
「使徒が第3新東京市内に入った…!?」
Misato: Is the Angel already inside Tokyo-3...!?

リツコ
「シンジ君、時間がないわ」
Ritsuko: Shinji, there’s no time.

シンジ
「………」
Shinji: ...

ミサト
「乗りなさい」
Misato: Pilot it.

シンジ
「嫌だよ…せっかく来たのに、こんなのないよ!」
Shinji: I won’t...! I came all the way here, but there’s no way I can do this!

ミサト
「シンジ君、何のためにここへ来たの?」
Misato: Shinji, why did you come here?

シンジ
「………」
Shinji: ...

ミサト
「駄目よ、逃げちゃ。
お父さんから、何よりも自分から!」
Misato: You mustn’t run away. Not from your father, and least of all from yourself!

シンジ
「わかってるよ…! でも、できるわけないよ!!」
Shinji: I know that...! But, there’s just no way I can do it!!

(Gendo contacts Fuyutsuki.)

「…冬月、レイを起こしてくれ」
Gendo: ...Fuyutsuki, wake Rei up.

冬月
「使えるかね?」
Fuyutsuki: You think we can use her?

ゲンドウ
「死んでいるわけではない」
Gendo: She’s not dead yet.

冬月
「わかった」
Fuyutsuki: Very well.

リツコ
「聞こえる、伊吹二尉?
初号機のコアユニットをL00タイプに
切り替えて、再起動」
Ritusko: Can you read me, Second Lieutenant Ibuki? Swap Unit-01’s core unit with the L00 Type, then began reactivation.

マヤ
「了解。現作業中断、再起動に入ります」
Maya: Yes, ma’am. Cancelling current operation. Beginning reactivation now.

シンジ
(やっぱり、僕はいらない人間なんだ…!)
Shinji: (I knew it, I’m not needed by anyone...!)

(Rei is rolled in on a gurney.)

レイ
「う、うう…」
Rei: U-ugggh...

シンジ
「…!」
Shinji: ...!

ゲンドウ
「レイ、予備が使えなくなった。もう一度だ」
Gendo: Rei, the spare isn’t usable. You’ll have to pilot again.

レイ
「はい…」
Rei: I understand...

(The room shakes violently.)

シンジ
「うわあっ!!」
Shinji: Uwah!!

レイ
「ああっ!」
Rei: Aaah!

シンジ
「だ、大丈夫ですか!?」
Shinji: A-are you alright!?

レイ
「あぐっ…! はあ、はあ、は…!」
Rei: Ach...! Haa, haa, haaa...!

シンジ
(ち、血が…!)
Shinji: (She’s-she’s bleeding...!)

ミサト
「損害状況の報告を!」
Misato: Give me a damage report!

マコト
「目標からの攻撃により、
第一層、第八装甲板、損壊!」
Makoto: The target’s attack has destroyed the first through eight armor layer!

ゲンドウ
「奴め、ここに気づいたか」
Gendo: It must have noticed us.

レイ
「う、ううう…!」
Rei: U-ugggh...!

シンジ
(逃げちゃ駄目だ、逃げちゃ駄目だ、逃げちゃ駄目だ、
逃げちゃ駄目だ、逃げちゃ駄目だ…っ!)
Shinji: (I mustn’t run away, I mustn’t run away, I mustn’t run away, I mustn’t run away, I mustn’t run away...!)

「やります! 僕が乗ります!」
Shinji: I’ll do it! I’ll pilot it!

(Scene ends.)

(Scene begins on the map screen of Tokyo-3. Only the 4th Angel, Ra Cailum, and Didarion are on the map.)

「弁慶、なんで俺たちを出さねえ!
使徒はそこまで来てんだぞ!」
Ryoma: Benkei, why the hell won’t you let us out there!? The Angel’s already here!

弁慶
「だから、NERVから待機命令が出てると
言ってるだろう!」
Benkei: Like I said, it’s because NERV order us to remain on standby!

カミーユ
「こうしている間にも、街に被害が…!
NERVは何を考えてるんです!?」
Kamille: Even while the city’s under attack...!? What is NERV thinking!?

アムロ
「俺たちに退去ではなく待機命令を出したということは…
少なくとも、作戦を放棄したわけじゃない」
Amuro: If we’re being ordered to standby rather than evacuate... Then at the very least, they haven’t abandoned the operation.

健一
「NERVには
何か対策があるって言うんですか…!?」
Kenichi: You mean NERV has some sort of plan...!?

アムロ
「おそらくな」
Amuro: That’s what it looks like.

一平
「ディーダリオンは
NERVの命令なんか聞く必要がねえってのに、
あそこで見てるだけか?」
Ippei: Didarion doesn’t need to listen to orders from NERV, so why’s he just over there watching?

メグ
「たぶん、彼にはなんらかの意図があって、
ああしているんじゃ…」
Meg: Maybe he has his own agenda, something he has to do...

Four: He came up from underground...!

「NERVの戦闘ロボット…なのか?」
Guy: That’s NERV’s combat robot...isn’t it?

「たった1機で使徒と戦うつもり!?」
Hiyoshi: They’re going to fight the Angel with just one machine!?

大次郎
「そいじゃそいじゃ! ぼっけな!」
Daijiro: Yeah! That’s too reckless!

ディーダリオン
(あれが俺を引き寄せたのか…?)
Didarion: (Is this what drew me here...?)

ミサト
「…構いませんね、司令?」
Misato: ...Are you alright with this, Commander?

ゲンドウ
「もちろんだ。
使徒を倒さぬ限り、我々に未来はない」
Gendo: Of course. If we do not defeat the Angel, then we have no future.

冬月
「碇、本当にこれでいいんだな?」
Fuyutsuki: Ikari, are you truly sure you want to do this?

ゲンドウ
「………」
Gendo: ...

ミサト
「いいわね、シンジ君?」
Misato: Everything alright, Shinji?

シンジ
「は、はい」
Shinji: Y-yes.

ミサト
「最終安全装置、解除!
エヴァンゲリオン初号機、リフトオフ!」
Misato: Final safety device, release! Evangelion Unit-01, activate!

めぐみ
「あのロボット、動き出すみたいよ!」
Megumi: The robot looks like it’s about to move!

一平
「手並みを見せてもらおうじゃないか」
Ippei: Well, let’s see what it can do then.

リツコ
「シンジ君、今は歩くことだけを考えて」
Ritusko: Shinji, just focus on walking for now.

シンジ
(歩く…)
Shinji: (Walking...)

(Unit-01 moves a few spaces closer to the Angel.)

竜馬
「おいおい、足元がおぼつかねえぞ!」
Ryoma: Whoa, hold on, it can’t even walk right!

渓
「あんなのでホントに大丈夫なの!?」
Kei: Is he really going to be okay!?

ミサト
「シンジ君、こちらの指示に従って使徒を倒して。
頼んだわよ」
Misato: Shinji, just follow our orders and defeat the Angel. We’re relying on you.

シンジ
「わ、わかりました!」
Shinji: I-I understand!

(Battle 2 begins.)

(This exchange triggers when Shinji attacks the Angel.)

ミサト
「シンジ君、落ち着いて相手をよく狙って!」
Misato: Shinji, stay calm and aim at the target carefully!

シンジ
「は、はい!」
Shinji: O-okay!

(Battle 2 ends when the Angel falls below 70% HP.)

ミサト
「その調子よ、シンジ君!」
Misato: Keep it up, Shinji!

(The Angel completely recovers.)

マヤ
「目標が損傷を修復しました!」
Maya: The target’s damage has completely recovered!

リツコ
「あんなに早く…!」
Ritsuko: It recovered so quickly...!

ミサト
「まずい!」
Misato: This is bad!

(The Angel uses Arrow of Light (光の矢) on Unit-01. An attack animation begins.)

4th Angel: ...

シンジ
「うわあああああああっ!」
Shinji: WAAAAAHHH!

(Attack animation ends, leaving Unit-01 critically damaged.)

「や、やられちゃったよ!!」
Hiyoshi: H-he just took some serious damage!!

アムロ
「あれは致命傷だ…!」
Amuro: That had to be critical...!

凱
「見ちゃいられない!
あのロボットを助けなければ!」
Guy: I can’t watch anymore! We have to go save that robot!

ミサト
「状況は!?」
Misato: What’s his status!?

シゲル
「頭部破損、損害不明!」
Shigeru: Head damaged, extend of damage unknown!

マヤ
「活動維持に問題発生!
シンクログラフ反転、パルスが逆流しています!」
Maya: Problems with sustaining activity! Synchro Graph is inverting! Pulse is reversing!

リツコ
「回路切断!
せき止めて!」
Ritusko: Cut the circuits! Keep it from progressing!

マヤ
「駄目です、信号拒絶! 受信しません!」
Maya: We can’t, Unit-01 is refusing the signal! It won’t accept it!

ミサト
「シンジ君は!?」
Misato: What about Shinji!?

シゲル
「モニター反応なし! 生死不明!」
Shigeru: Monitor is unresponsive! Life signs unknown!

リツコ
「ミサト!」
Ritsuko: Misato!

ミサト
「くっ、ここまでね…!
ロンド・ベル隊の待機命令を解除!
使徒への攻撃を要請!」
Misato: Tch, so this is it then...! Lift the standby order on Londo Bell! Tell them to attack the Angel!

ミサト
「初号機はパイロット保護を最優先!
プラグを強制射出して!」
Misato: The pilot’s safety is our first priority! Force eject the plug!

マヤ
「駄目です! 完全に制御不能です!」
