- Eric,
- I have a friend who had a question about her Microsoft Exchange
- implementation and I figured you'd be the best to ask.
- Currently, my friend Karen has a hosting company provide her with an
- exchange server running at youthcollegeconnections.com and she would like to
- move the exchange server to her newly-purchased domain at yourycc.com.
- Assuming all the domain redirects work correctly, is there an easy way for
- her or her hosting company to move her entire exchange database/server to
- yourycc.com, while keeping youthcollegeconnections.com as an alias to the
- new domain? What would she have to do personally, and what would the hosting
- company have to do?
- Thanks for your input on this, I appreciate it.

- Below are a few thoughts on exchange servers.
- Understanding the process is the first step.
- I need additional info regarding the # of users with E-mails,
- Do the e-mails contain SS numbers, CC numbers etc...
- Will the company use a domain.
- Exchange Info
- When you send an e-mail to [email protected] the e-mail provider
- (gmail.com) looks at the MX record for test123 ( IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
- the e-mail is sent to the IP. The exchange server at the IP is set up
- to accept e-mail from only specific Qualified domain names (test.com)
- When the MX record is updated with the registration company (godaddy,
- network solutions) it can take 3 -4 days to start getting e-mail
- delivered to the new MX record IP. It has been known to be a RGE.
- (Resume generating event).
- I updated the schools MX record 2 days before XMass pointing to
- Postini (spam filter, antivirus filter owned by google) postini will
- only send registered users E-mail to the schools exchange server.
- Postini will spool 4-5 days worth of E-mails if my exchange server
- brakes. I will never need to change the MX record from Postini. I can
- redirect to a new exchange server with 0 downtime.
- Q1 how many users have accts?
- Small numbers - archive from current server to local PST files use
- Carbon copy to secure files.
- Large numbers- copy the info store to a new exchange server and
- connect mailboxes to domain user accts. Backup to USB device with
- windows backup every week.
- Only a full backup will clear the log files.
- The exchange server can be configured to allow E-mails from more than
- 1 domain. Allowed QDM test123 test321 will allow e-mail into the
- exchange server from both QDM
- Exchange then looks for e-mail accts associated with e-mail acct
- ebugda@test123.
- User might have more than one e-mail with different QDM..
- Note
- Make sure you set the default from E-mail acct for when the user
- sends out E-mails.
- Note
- When building an exchange server use 2 sets of harddrives.
- Raid set 1 for the OS and Log files.
- Raid set 2 (3 drives or more) for the info store.
- When the info store gets backed up the log files are flushed.
- If raid set 1 goes bad re install os and exchange and reconnect to
- info store to user E-mail accts
- If raid set 2 goes bad restore info store from backup and run the log files.
