49. To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
 50. Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.
 51. This film is riddled with situations which would have far different outcomes in real life. There were many times when people giggled or laughed out loud in the theatre as the star pulled off stunts or escapes that would make James Bond choke on his martini. If the CBP and Panamanian police were this inept, smugglers wouldn't need submarines, they could use hot air balloons. That said, the movie does a good job of making you want to smack some people upside the head (both bad guys and good guys making bad choices). There are also some tense scenes involving kids that will unnerve some audience members, especially those who are parents. Bad guys just don't have any rules do they? In the end, the implausible movie wraps up sweeter than when the submarine rises up underneath Bond's adrift life raft in the middle of the ocean. Bourne would also be proud of the size of the bow-tie on Wahlberg's walkaway.
 52. Give us an antihero that's gonna break the law for a substantial reason and not only can anything happen, but the audience will embrace it with open arms. But prepare to sustain disbelief through this action/suspense yarn involving a freshly retired contraband smuggler who, because of his brother-in-law's involvement in the same trade but with unlucky results, returns to his old life to straighten things out.

It's a piece of cake… with exploding candles… as Mark Walhberg goes from ship to land back to ship: dodging bullets, tricking drug dealers, and getting smashed up… after which the real fun begins. Old school melodrama envelopes the b-story as his wife and two children, vulnerably at odds with grimy, over the top mobster Giovanni Ribisi – but the suspense relies on how the ex smuggler can figure to sneak stuff through without being caught, and most importantly, to save his family as the goons move in.

Wahlberg carries the movie with more cool than edge, and even when the story gets mazy and convoluted, he's a genuine enough protagonist to make everything seem precisely clear: exactly when it needs to be.

And welcome back veteran actor William Lucking to a big budget movie, looking perfectly gruff as Walhberg's imprisoned father.

For More Reviews: www.cultfilmfreaks.com
 53. This Americanized version of the 2008 Nordic thriller "Reykjavik Rotterdam" transfers the original's gritty, violent action into an entertaining and intense starring role for Mark Wahlberg.
 54. When Giovanni Ribisi first auditioned for Contraband, it was for a different part. The director, Kormákur, suggested he read for Tim Briggs, the local thug who terrorizes the Farraday family. Kormákur says he was originally looking for the tough guy, but he felt that Ribisi brought something unexpected and more dangerous than a typical bully would. a5c7b9f00b
