  9. Chapter 58. Crush Advice
  10.
  11. It had taken Ruby quite some time to get used to the fact that her older sister and her English teacher were... romantically involved.
  12.
  13. After that first conference they'd had, Yang had started taking Weiss out on little dinner dates, or would sometimes even go so far as to have Ruby deliver cards or little gifts to Weiss during school.
  14.
  15. At first, Ruby had been weirded out by the idea of her older sister dating one of her teachers.
  16.
  17. But as time went on, and the two of them grew closer and closer, Ruby realized it might not have been so bad.
  18.
  19. Ruby got to witness firsthand how happy Yang had become. Every evening when her older sister came to pick Ruby up, she'd inquire about her day, then eventually go off babbling about Weiss. Whenever she came back from a date with her, Yang was always giddy and smiling.
  20.
  21. And Ruby saw a notable change in her English teacher as well. After she started seeing Yang, Weiss became much more vibrant in class, and she started smiling a lot more often.
  22.
  23. So once Ruby had seen for herself the positive impact this relationship was having on them both, she'd stopped viewing it as a strange thing, simply because it involved her sister and her teacher.
  24.
  25. Yang and Weiss were just normal girls, and responsible young adults at that. They deserved to find happiness in each other.
  26.
  27. And even though Weiss was her teacher, Ruby had always liked her and thought of her almost as a second older sister. Even before she and Yang had started seeing one another, Weiss had always been there to help Ruby during school if she was feeling nervous about anything or if she needed to talk. Her consequent relationship with Yang only served to strengthen that special bond she had with Ruby.
  28.
  29. Between the two of them, Ruby always had someone to look out for her, be it at home, or at school. And that was certainly nice to know.
  30.
  31. But it was only inevitable that Ruby would eventually move up a grade, until she was no longer in Weiss' class.
  32.
  33. Of course, that made her a little sad at first, but the dejection didn't last long at all. Weiss still made time to see Ruby during lunch periods, and Ruby made time to see her before or after school.
  34.
  35. Plus, she still saw her at home a lot, too. It wasn't uncommon for Weiss to sleep over at their apartment or go out with them on weekends.
  36.
  37. So though Ruby might've lost a few school time hours with her, she still saw Weiss every day for plenty of time. And now that she wasn't her teacher anymore, she felt a lot more comfortable talking to her.
  38.
  39. Especially about someone in particular...
  40.
  41. It was after Yang and Weiss had been officially dating for over a year, and Ruby had been in another teacher's English class for just as long when a transfer student arrived at the school.
  42.
  43. She was a very calm, quiet, and clever girl, who liked to wear darker colors most of the time. She had long black hair and wore a matching bow atop her head every day. But what had drawn Ruby to her right away had been her pretty golden eyes.
  44.
  45. She ended up being in most of Ruby's classes, and just listening to roll call had told her that the girl's name was Blake. Ruby didn't know what it was, but there was just something about Blake that made her smile.
  46.
  47. So on that first day, when she noticed Blake sitting alone in the cafeteria, Ruby gathered herself up and went over to her. She'd never been good at social things or starting conversations, especially with strangers.
  48.
  49. But by some miracle, she'd managed to say hello to Blake and introduce herself.
  50.
  51. And in turn, Blake's nervous demeanor had gradually melted away, until she was smiling naturally.
  52.
  53. They hit it off right away, and became very good friends. Ruby made sure to sit next to Blake in every class they had together. She helped her with her schedule and showed her around the school, sat with her at lunch and helped her study for quizzes.
  54.
  55. And every time Blake smiled at her, she just felt warmer and warmer.
  56.
  57. Ruby told Yang about Blake, but not about the warm fuzzy feeling she got from being around her. She more or less knew what that meant, and she didn't want to talk to Yang about it.
  58.
  59. So she turned to her other big sister.
  60.
  61. One day before school began, before Blake's bus had arrived, Ruby hurried to Weiss' classroom and knocked on the door. Weiss perked up when she saw her visitor and waved her in.
  62.
  63. "Good morning, Ruby. How are you today?"
  64.
  65. "I'm fine!" she chirped. "I-I'd um... actually wanted to ask you... about something, though..." She must have been fidgeting and blushing quite a lot, because Weiss instantly put down her papers and turned to face her directly.
  66.
  67. "What is it? How can I help?"
  68.
  69. Ruby whimpered, but knew it was time to spill the beans.
  70.
  71. "It's just-! I... I think I really, um... I really like someone, a-and I don't know what to do!"
  72.
  73. Clearly, Weiss had been worried about her up until this point. But upon hearing Ruby's dilemma, her eyes softened and she let out a sigh of relief.
  74.
  75. "You do?" She tried to act surprised; she'd seen just how infatuated Ruby was with the new girl. "Well, then I'd advise you to just be honest with them. If you feel a certain way about them, then they deserve to know, wouldn't you say so?"
  76.
  77. Ruby considered her words for a moment, taking it all very seriously.
  78.
  79. "Yeah... You're right. Th-Thanks, Weiss." Ruby hugged her tightly and quickly before pulling back. "U-Um... could you maybe... n-not tell Yang-?"
  80.
  81. "My lips are sealed," she assured. "You'll tell her when you're ready."
  82.
  83. That took the last bit of pressure off of Ruby's shoulders.
  84.
  85. "Thank you, Weiss!"
  86.
  87. With that, she turned and darted off into the hallway, hurrying for Blake's locker to meet her when she arrived. The second she saw her friend approaching, Ruby ran to cover the distance between them and hugged her warmly.
  88.
  89. "Hi, Blake!"
  90.
  91. Her friend chuckled and squeezed her back.
  92.
  93. "Hi, Ruby. Thanks for waiting for me again."
  94.
  95. "Of course!" She walked Blake to her locker and tried not to be nervous. She took Weiss' advice and just tried to be herself. "Um, so... I know we just had a lot of tests and stuff, a-and since it's Friday now, I-I was wondering if maybe you'd wanna... I dunno like, go see a movie or something tonight? So we can celebrate our tests being over, y'know?"
  96.
  97. Blake's eyes widened in surprise, but a smile formed on her lips just as quickly.
  98.
  99. "Sure. That sounds really nice, Ruby."
  100.
  101. Ruby's spirits lifted so high she thought she might start drifting away.
  102.
  103. Throughout the day, she and Blake discussed what movie they should see and at what time. They hugged before going home and promised to see each other again soon.
  104.
  105. Yang came to pick up both Weiss and Ruby that afternoon, and Ruby was given the daunting task of requesting a ride to the movie theater later to meet with Blake.
  106.
  107. And of course, Yang was thrilled. She went off ranting and raving about her little sister's "first date" while Ruby sat in the back seat with her cheeks burning red. Yang was still gushing when she parked in the driveway.
  108.
  109. "Okay, you gotta shower right away, Ruby. I'll pick out something for you to wear! Oh my gosh, I still can't believe my baby sister is going on her first- mm-!"
  110.
  111. Ruby was more than thankful when Weiss cut her off with a kiss.
  112.
  113. "Yang, that's enough. Let Ruby do this herself."
  114.
  115. Yang looked to her sister and to her girlfriend and back again, then nodded.
  116.
  117. "You're right. Ruby, you just have fun tonight, okay? If you need help or anything, text me any time!"
  118.
  119. "Yeah. I will! Thanks, Yang. Thanks, Weiss."
  120.
  121. An hour later, Yang was driving Ruby to the theater for her very first date.
  122.
  123. And a month later, she was driving Ruby, Weiss, and Blake to a double-date supper.
  124.
