- “2016-03-22 Evening: 12 Saving money”
- ---
- p. 141 - What can you guess about this person from her coat and car?
- What are other things people do to show off their wealth?
- conspicuous consumption = buying things to display (to be conspicuous), such as fancy cars or jewels
- Would you buy things to show off if you were very rich?
- ---
- p. 142 - What do you know about Norway?
- Read the article about Norway’s economy and quality of life.
- ---
- Look at these three sentences from the reading:
- 1) Norway’s success is not only the result of its huge reserves of oil.
- 2) Laws just recently passed by the government emphasize the importance of family and time off.
- 3) It is not even invested in new schools and hospitals.
- With a partner, explain the meanings of the sentences without using the underlined words.
- part 5 - which option describes the position of these adverbs? - c
- 1) It’s not all about the reserves of oil. There are many different factors.
- 2) [emphasizes that it’s very recently]
- 3) They didn’t invest it in anything, including these things that usually are invested in.
- Only Mike could play the guitar. = Mike and nobody else.
- Mike could only play the guitar. / Mike could play only the guitar. = The guitar and no other instruments.
- Mike could only read English. = English and not another language.
- Mike could only read English. = Read but not speak or write.
- ---
- These are called focus adverbs. They focus on one part of the sentence, and moving them can change the meaning of the sentence.
- ---
- p. 143 part 7 - Match the sentences to what follows logically.
- 1 g
- 2 e (if “think” is pronounced strongly)
- 3 d (This is the same meaning as if you pronounce, “Visitors only think NORWAY is expensive.”)
- 4 b
- 5 f (“just” = “only”)
- 6 a
- 7 h
- 8 c
- ---
- It’s so easy that even a child could do it.
- (Children are not very capable. It’s surprising that they could do something.)
- It’s so difficult that even Einstein couldn’t do it.
- (Einstein is very capable. It’s surprising that he couldn’t do something.)
- ---
- “too”, “as well”, and “also” are also focusing adverbs
- part 9 - Rewrite these sentences with “also” in the correct position.
- 1 Norwegians can also expect to get a good education.
- Also, Norwegians can expect to get a good education. (“also” can go at the beginning, with a comma)
- 2 It is also due to the Norwegians’ thrift.
- 3 Norwegians also work hard.
- 4 The country is also saving for the future.
- “also” goes after the first auxiliary verb (and after “be” if it’s the only verb), but before everything else
- The country has also saved for the future.
- The country has also been saving for the future.
- ---
- part 11 - Where can “also” go in these sentences? (2 is a bit tricky, because “also” doesn’t go together with any of the verbs in the sentence)
- 1 would also like
- 2 and also a lot
- 3 they also get
- 4 and also support
- 5 is also expensive
- 6 can also use
- (When “also” is in a part of a sentence without a verb, it goes directly after “and”.)
- ---
- part 12 - Use words from part 11 to make phrases with the same meaning
- 1 payment
- 2 investment
- 3 borrowing (this sounds very British to me) / debt (borrowing = the money you have borrowed)
- 4 spending
- 5 loan (money lent by a bank)
- 6 debt (= the money that you owe)
- 7 salary
- 8 grant
- wage = the amount you earn per hour or day of work
- salary = the agreed amount you earn per year (or month)
- ---
- p. 146 - What do you think a gift economy might be?
- Discuss with your partner what this might include and what an example might be.
- What do you know about gifts in Japanese culture?
- ---
- Homework: read p. 147 and do p. 146 parts 3 and 4
- Also, p. 143 part 8 (add “just”, “only”, or “even” to the sentences, and say if it’s true in your country)
