  1. “Madness… pure madness…” The grey-haired scientist
  2. waved his palms across the holographic wall in
  3. frustration. Each swipe of his wrinkled, clawed Nephilim
  4. hands pushed a complex equation to the side of the wall
  5. or off the edge and into the digital bin.
  6.
  7. With a large empty space now occupying the centre
  8. of the holographic wall, the hulking Nephilim scientist
  9. scrawled a clean and deceptively simple equation.
  10.
  11. V = Sqrt(GM/R)
  12.
  13. “… or magic.”
  14.
  15. “Gratar, this is not what we are here to do.” The
  16. frustrated Corporate botanist took a seat; she knew this
  17. would take a while. “We need to continue our genetic
  18. mapping of the flora and fauna across the system.”
  19.
  20. “Child’s play.”
  21.
  22. “Child’s play? Really?” Sam hated how her counterpart
  23. could so easily reduce her life’s work to nothing. “We
  24. haven’t even begun to scratch the surface on the genetic
  25. structures of even half the Archon-created plants on
  26. Mishpacha, let alone the mutated X’ion hybrids…”
  27.
  28. “No!” Gratar gritted his teeth in frustration. “It means
  29. nothing to understand how the Archons and the X’ion
  30. populated the worlds if we can’t grasp the basics of how
  31. the worlds were altered to accommodate life.”
  32.
  33. “But we do know. humanity used powerful chemical
  34. synthesisers to alter and balance the atmo…”
  35.
  36. “You are missing the point! Atmospheres, bio-diversity,
  37. all of this we can begin to grasp. But this!” Gratar pointed
  38. towards his wall. “Gravity, this eludes us all.”
  39.
  40. Sam sat patiently. This would take a while.
  41.
  42. “We often mistakenly think that electronics was
  43. humanity’s crowning achievement. But it’s not…” Gratar
  44. closed his large eyes in thought. “It’s as if humanity
  45. looked at the planets like we would look at an overgrown
  46. field and said, ‘No, this will not do; let me change things
  47. so that I may build a home here’… to planets! They had
  48. this attitude of damn planets! None of our orbits or
  49. gravitation pulls are what they should be! None of them!
  50. Humanity has changed every single one of them, and
  51. we have no idea how!
