  1. Chapter 4
  2.
  3. >You are stirred awake, quickly rising to from your bed.
  4. >You shake yourself out of the sleepiness.
  5. >You were in your room- that was for sure.
  6. >A solitary beam of sunlight shone through the single window above your bed.
  7. >You turn to Christie’s bed, only to find it empty.
  8. >You turn away and try to leave your bed, only have it prevented by a weight on your legs.
  9. >You tug at it, but whatever it was, it was heavy.
  10. >You lazily turn to see this mystery item.
  11. >A hand races to hit you in the face, dazzling you- and knocking you off the bed.
  12. >You know that bad bed habits anywhere.
  13. >And there she was- the changeling of the century.
  14. >Sprawled over the wall-side of your bed, arms out stretched, peacefully drooling onto your clean bed.
  15. >As soon as she senses your absence, she moves in to take over the bed.
  16. >She grabs your pillow, and goes back to her dormant state.
  17. >That changeling was a demon under that fake human skin.
  18. >You sigh, and grab the blanket under her.
  19. >A thought of yanking the cloth under her comes to your mind.
  20. >She could be on the floor, just like you are.
  21. >You feel a sinister grin coming to your face.
  22. >You hold tight and-
  23. >Give it a gentle pull.
  24. >You make sure the blanket is completely out, and you flap it wide.
  25. >And then you quickly slip it over Christie, and tuck her in.
  26. >You can see a smile forming on her face.
  27. >You fix the edges of the bed, and admire your handiwork.
  28. >You could say you were admiring-
  29. >No.
  30. >…
  31. >Okay, maybe once.
  32. >You lower yourself over Christie’s sleeping form, and plant a simple kiss in her forehead.
  33. >There, all done.
  34. >You quickly rush out of the room, trying to wipe away your blush.
  35. >You close the door gently, and sigh again.
  36. >Unknown to you, you weren’t the only one awake in that room.
  37.
  38. >You are hit face first with the smell of cooking.
  39. >Legit, delicious food in the making.
  40. >That could only mean one thing.
  41. >You quickly hurry up the stairs, and open mother’s room.
  42. >Her bed is empty.
  43. >”Anonymous, you up?” You hear her call from down stairs.
  44. >You run down the stairs, all the way to the first.
  45. >You jump over the few bottom stairs, landing with a thud.
  46. >Mom comes in, holding the usual beakers and a frying pan.
  47. >”Anon, you alright?”
  48. >You smile, and run to your mother.
  49. >And then you hold her into hug, still smiling.
  50. >She drops the two items, and hugs you back.
  51. “Glad to have you back, mom.”
  52. >”Good to be back, but- I’m not making that egg again.”
  53. >You let go, and rush back to your room.
  54. >You slam open the door, and go to the most amazing mare in your life.
  55. >She stirs awake from the ruckus, and looks to you with fazed glare.
  56. >You jump into the bed, and hug her.
  57. “THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANK-“
  58. >”OOOOKAY.”
  59. >Her face says no, but her body is saying otherwise.
  60. >Wait, why is this starting to sound like rape story?
  61. >”Anon.”
  62. >You still hold on to her, in some awkward to say thanks.
  63. >”Anonymous.”
  64. >You grip tighter.
  65. >”Let go.”
  66. “No.”
  67. >”Fine.”
  68. >A burst of green flames erupt from Chrysalis.
  69. >As if that could scare you.
  70. >And then, you hear a chink of metal, before some tidbits fall to your head.
  71. >You shake it off, wondering what that was.
  72. >You look up, and gasp.
  73. >PERFECT TEETH
  74. >Well, in their standards.
  75. >NO BRACES
  76. >You see her tongue feeling for the lost metal, and then to her evenly matched canines.
  77. >”What the…”
  78. >Her green eyes were in full slit now, looking more reptilian.
  79. >Her horn was longer and better angled, but still had those holes.
  80. >Her short mane was now up on your face.
  81. >Mind you, you were at the bottom of her neck.
  82. >She blows it away, and looks to you.
  83. >”You had your chance, Anon…”
  84. “Christie, y-“
  85. >She interrupts you with a quick kiss on the lips, and then pulling back with a playful smile.
  86. >Damn, you forgot these ponies had very flexible necks.
  87. >You can feel yourself blushing up a storm.
  88. >She grins, and turns back to her human form.
  89. >You feel your arms loosening up, and Chrysalis goes back to her struggling.
  90. >And then you lose your balance, falling out of the bed again.
  91. >You panic, and hold tighter.
  92. >”A-NOOOOOONNNN!”
  93. >She shouts as she falls with you.
  94. >You land on your back- hard.
  95. >No, that was not a euphemism.
  96. >Christie is sprawled right over you, pinning to the floor.
  97. >”Oh, this is one of your ruses, isn’t it- Anon?”
  98. “Dammit Christie.”
  99. >”What?” She smiles.
  100. “Also, I like your new look.”
  101. >”What?”
  102. “What?”
  103. >”What new look?”
  104. “Your changeling form?”
  105. >Chrysalis immediately gets off you, and goes to the looking glass.
  106. >She quickly changes into her original form, and begins to look around.
  107. >Was she always that tall?
  108. >She grins, frown, smiles, and pouts at the mirror, getting a better feel of her new teeth.
  109. >She then turns to you, face full of triumph.
  110. >”I told you it was a phase.”
  111. >You shrug.
  112. “So, any clue how you got out of it so quick?”
  113. >She shrugs as well.
  114. >”Not a clue.”
  115. >She thinks for a while, placing a hoof under her jaw.
  116. >You do the same, and sit on the open window.
  117. “Maybe it was last night?”
  118. >She raises a brow, looking at your bed.
  119. “No, not that! The healing!”
  120. >”Oh, that.”
  121. >She turns into a human again and close in on you.
  122. >”Possibly.”
  123. >You are slightly leaning outwards, trying to maintain some sense of respectful distance.
  124. >She studies you carefully, before coming closer.
  125. >”Just an experiment…”
  126. >She’s just an inch away from you now.
  127. >You’re almost half-way out of the window.
  128. >Actually-
  129. >You lose balance, and you heart sinks as you start to fall backwards.
  130. >A hand quickly grabs your shoulder, holding you.
  131. “Oh gee, thanks Chry-“
  132. >She pulls you to her lips.
  133. >You awkwardly kiss once again, your arms held up chest high in surprise.
  134. >She then lets go, and starts smiling again.
  135. >”I knew it! I knew you cared about me!”
  136. >Your heart sinks again.
  137. “Care?”
  138. >”Yeah, looks like it’s a powerful boost- remember last night?”
  139. >You’re trying to wrap your head around this.
  140. >”I tapped into your emotions last night, and got this sudden surge.”
  141. “Do you think that caused your growth?”
  142. >”Possibly.”
  143. “So, ‘Care’ is the most powerful?”
  144. >”As far as I can tell, then yes.”
  145. “Then how come you never felt it before?”
  146. >She cocks her head to the side.
  147. >”What do you mean?”
  148. “I mean I- I Care about you and-“
  149. >Anon, your stupid is showing again.
  150. “Nevermind.”
  151. >You quickly escape the room, rushing over to mom.
  152. >”What the hell?” Chrysalis exclaims, not sure what just happened.
  153. >And she thought she was the one holding the wild cards.
  154. >Your descend down the stairs wasn’t exactly nice.
  155. >As soon as you hit the floor, that murky smell caught you again.
  156. >It was not even ten, and Mom was already off making more brews.
  157. >”You should have eaten breakfast early, honey!”
  158. >She shouts over her chemistry set.
  159. >She already has five vials set.
  160. >Wait, where were those flasks last time?
  161. >And the glass- all cleaned up.
  162. >You secretly hope you could mooch off your mother forever, seeing how clean she is.
  163. >You spot a plate of eggs on the kitchen table.
  164. >Without a word, you go for it, downing it in one go.
  165. >”Anon, you should have told me if you were that hungry.”
  166. >She smiles warmly, before placing your canteen on the table.
  167. >You take a sip of the mixture, almost getting nausea over the blend of the two tastes.
  168. >You force them down.
  169. >You can’t help to poke out your tongue in disgust.
  170. >Christie comes over and sits across you, eyeing your expression.
  171. >”You tried eating with the mix, didn’t you.”
  172. >You nod, while taking a glass of water.
  173. >You cough is quickly drowned out by the mixture.
  174. >Some escape, as you hit your chest.
  175. >”Well, are we done? We need to get back to our ‘job’.”
  176. >”You kids got work?” Mom chimes in.
  177. “Err, yeah, we got one by the market.”
  178. >Mom has this stoic look on her face, she’s not buying it.
  179. “Well, gotta go, love you.”
  180. >You and Chrysalis leave the establishment immediately, taking your respective bags.
  181. >Mom has barely a second to answer, as the sick and wounded started to pour in.
  182. >You barely have a second to catch your breath, as Christie starts making her way to the markets.
  183. >Just got out, and she’s already at work.
  184.
  185. >You rendezvous with your partner in crime by lunch time.
  186. >She’s waiting by the same corner, back in her human form.
  187. >”Got good cuts today?”
  188. “Enough.”
  189. >”Wish I could say the same.”
  190. “What did you fuck up now?”
  191. >”Nothing! At least that’s what I’m thinking.”
  192. >You cross your arms.
  193. >Typical.
  194. >”Look, two mares have been following me all day! They keep saying strange stuff at me, alright?”
  195. “Mares?”
  196. >You then feel a strange tingling on your back.
  197. >You turn around, to see five mares staring at you and Christie.
  198. >”Oh god, there’s five of them now!”
  199. “Let’s just… get out of here.”
  200. >You push Chrysalis into her tracks, and she runs with you into a nearby alley.
  201. >As if by cue, the five mares run as well.
  202. >You glance back to see six mares behind you.
  203. “Oh, you have got to be kidding me. Who did you piss off now?”
  204. >”No one! Well, there was this stallion…”
  205. >You can’t help smiling.
  206. “Don’t ever change, Christie.”
  207. >”I don’t plan on it.”
  208. >You turn again to the mares, and your mouth hangs open.
  209. >Their colorful form melts away, and you see six sickly creatures against you.
  210. >They look like-
  211. >You turn to your friend.
  212. >Chrysalis?
  213. “Christie.”
  214. >”Saw it!”
  215. >One of the changelings finally speaks up.
  216. >”Halt!”
  217. >Funnily enough, the two of you comply.
  218. >”Who are you, what do you want?”
  219. >Another steps up.
  220. >Actually, they do look like Christie, but something is off.
  221. >Five of them are way shorter, almost normal pony-sized.
  222. >Only one looked JUST LIKE Chrysalis.
  223. >The tallest one steps out; you can smell the pride from here.
  224. >”We got wind of a new queen emerging here, and look what we have here.”
  225. >You turn to Christie.
  226. “Christie?”
  227. >The other changeling laughs.
  228. >”Christie? Is that some pet name he’s giving you?”
  229. >Chrysalis steps up.
  230. >Oh she mad.
  231. >”Is that an insult?”
  232. >You back away slowly.
  233. >Chrysalis turns into her original form, glancing angrily at the offending changeling.
  234. >To be honest, they do look alike.
  235. >Just their iris and mane is differently colored.
  236. >The other one also has a much more angled head, giving a more masculine feeling.
  237. “What do you want?”
  238. >”Me? Want? No.”
  239. >She blinks once.
  240. >”I COMMAND.”
  241. >”Idiots, by the looks of it.” Chrysalis drops a comment.
  242. >She points at the lesser changelings, who look strangely dazed.
  243. ”Are they alright?”
  244. >The Chysalis-look-alike glance back and forth, looking worried.
  245. >”Interesting, looks like your pheromones are quite strong as well.”
  246. >“Somep0ny translate.” Chrysalis looks uninterested.
  247. >”When SHE fully developed, she is ready to become a queen, human.”
  248. >You turn to Chrysalis.
  249. >She makes small circles next to her head.
  250. >Yeah, I think she’s nuts too.
  251. >”Pheromones, eh?” Chrysalis steps up.
  252. >”Then how come you’re unaffected?”
  253. >The doppelganger facepalms.
  254. >”Because I’m also a queen, you twat.”
  255. >Are they family? That would explain so much.
  256. >”And?” Chrysalis shoots a disdaining glare.
  257. >The other ‘queen’ draws out a dagger.
  258. >”I’m going to have to kill you.”
  259. >A changeling whispers something to her, and she grins manically.
  260. >”And the human, just for kicks.”
  261. “Oh come on.”
  262. >Chrysalis turns to you, smiling.
  263. >”Let’s see if they can catch us.”
  264. >And with that, the two of you are away.
  265. >You race through the alleys, occasionally splitting with Chrysalis.
  266. >After years of work, this was almost too easy.
  267. >You knew the paths, in and out.
  268. >They didn’t.
  269. >Soon enough, you lost all of the little changelings.
  270. >Only the contending queen is behind the two of you, still holding her dagger.
  271. >She was a lousy shot with her magic.
  272. >Chrysalis done better- and she was drunk that time.
  273. >”Come back here, human!” She calls.
  274. >Wait, why you?
  275. >You’re not a changeling as far as you can tell.
  276. >Or, are you?
  277. >You just loved internal monologues, didn’t you?
  278. >Chrysalis slides out of view, and you find yourself back at the market.
  279. >You try to crouch and blend with the ponies, but more you do it, more attention you gather.
  280. >The changeling was already half way through the crowd.
  281. >You could see the anger and determination in her eyes.
  282. >And then, shit goes to hell.
  283. >”Pickpocket!” Some jackass calls to you.
  284. >Everyone backs off.
  285. >The changeling smiles, and licks her lips.
  286. >She changes to a human, still with her knife.
  287. >Ponies are now blocking your path and exit, due to their frightened state of having a pickpocket.
  288. >You are starting to panic, she’s getting closer.
  289. >And closer.
  290. >”Anon!” You hear a familiar voice.
  291. >The changeling is now on a full-on sprint, dagger aimed at you.
  292. >Was it Chrys?
  293. >No, it was not her-
  294. >The changeling stepped up to you, as did another person.
  295. >”Time to end this.”
  296. >”There you are, son!”
  297. >The rest is a blur.
  298. >Mom comes up to you, right in front of you, with a worried expression.
  299. >She gives you a shake, not because of she’s angry.
  300. >But because of that red stream of liquid behind her, and the shocked changeling far beyond that.
  301. >You mother’s expression goes wide, and she slowly falls to her knees.
  302. >And then, the crowd started to scream.
  303. >The ponies quickly move out of the area, as you stared at your mother’s dying form.
  304. >She’s holding your ankles, for her dear life.
  305. >You quietly lean down, spotting the knife plunged to her back.
  306. >You are at a loss of words.
  307. >Mother goes limp, going silent.
  308. >You start to shutter, glancing at the changeling and the knife.
  309. >She then grins at you, and runs off.
  310. >You kneel and hold your mother one last time.
  311. “I’m sorry mom, I’m so sorry…”
  312. >You keep on muttering.
  313. >Soon, you see a figure emerge from one of the alleys.
  314. >It’s Christie.
  315. >She has a smug expression, but that goes away when she spots you.
  316. >Wasn’t hard, the bazaar is empty now.
  317. >”Anon…” She crouches next to you, and touches your mother.
  318. >”She’s gone, Anon.”
  319. “No, no no no no, she’s still here, Christie, right here.”
  320. >Christie pats your shoulder.
  321. >”I’m sorry Anon.”
  322. >Your tears break out at this point, and you find yourself burying your head in Christie’s shoulders.
  323. >She holds you for a while.
  324. >And then, she feels a spark of emotion.
  325. >Something burns up within you, as you clutch the knife which was once buried in your mother.
  326. >Chrysalis has to back away; it burned her.
  327.
  328. “Let’s go visit someone.”
