- Griffon and pony relations were going quite well in the magical land known as Equestria. Just years before, griffons were mostly shunned by ponies and did not get to enjoy the same rights and pleasures as most other ponies in the kingdom, but now that had all changed.
- Now ponies could move back and forth between Griffonstone, and the griffons that lived there could do the same. It was a time of great joy and prosperity. However, there were some ponies that did not really enjoy this new age of joy and prosperity, ponies that remembered all too well the fact that there had been a time in which griffons and ponies had gone to war.
- Hatter was one of these ponies. He had not been alive for the war, and any ponies that might have seen it would need to be hundreds of years old. Yet he still held a bitter hate towards the griffons. The reasons for which were not quite clear.
- It might have had something to do with the fact that he was a thin, feminine stallion, clad in gray fur and a red trench coat that had been padded to try and hide his thin frame from the outside world.
- Compared to him, most griffons he had seen were strong, bulky creatures with talons and the ability to fly. All the pony females seemed to love them, and it had been hard enough for the unicorn to find a girlfriend to begin with. Now it was practically impossible.
- So, that was likely a large part of the unicorn being very racist towards griffons. He wanted them to go back to their own country so that he could have a larger chance at finding a pony girlfriend.
- It seemed like nothing could change his opinion on the matter, he was a very poor hat trader who happened to be very stubbon in his opinion.
- It just so happened that one day he was selling hats outside a fairly modest milkshake bar when he saw the most beatiful creature he had ever seen in his life. Her fur was black like the midnight sky, with red mixed into her hair and eyes, eyes which seemed bright and filled with a wondrous intelligence.
- She was perfect, young and in her prime and filled with life and intelligence. There was just one problem, and that was the fact that she was a griffon. Hatter felt dirty just for having such feelings about a griffon, but even he had to admit there was something just so perfect about the way she looked.
- And she was just sat out the front of the milkshake bar, sipping softly at a thick pink milkshake, staring thoughtfully out at the road ahead. Hatter had no idea how it was he was going to introduce himself to her, or even if he should introduce himself. The thought alone sent his heart racing frantically within his chest.
- He really did dislike griffons, and he really was quite a nervous wreck of a stallion. What if it did not go quite to plan? He would never be able to recover if she found his advances annoying and sent him away with his tail between his legs.
- Hatter’s head begin to spin, frantically trying to come up with the things that he was going to say, the things he was going to do. If his plan did not go perfectly, then she was certainly going to send him away.
- After all, what did he really have to offer a lady such as herself? He was a poor hat maker who lived in a hut made out of tin, and she was wearing a dress made out of really fine looking black silk.
- There was no way a stallion like him would have much to offer someone like her, and for a moment he considered just walking away and forgetting about this whole situation, returning home to count his profits for the day and see how much he was able to afford to eat.
- But she was by far the prettiest creature he had ever seen, and if he did not at least try to seduce her, it would likely haunt him for the rest of his days.
- Hatter slowly walked his way over to the table, time seeming to slow down around him as his heart thudded away like the engine of some great machine within his chest. He was still putting a plan together in his head as he moved over to the table, the street seeming to melt away around him, the ponies vanishing and the world becoming nothing more then a white void.
- A white void with a table and a griffon in it. Had she been a mare rather then a griffon, he was quite sure his heart would burst, considering how hard it was currently trying to leap out of his chest despite her being a creature he was not all too fond of.
- He just hoped he did not get a noticeable erection before he had managed to try seducing her. Thankfully he was far too close to having a panic attack to even attempt being aroused right now.
- The stallion finally reached the table and took a seat at it, starting softly at the griffon who was now setting her deep red eyes upon him. Right, now he just had to give his speech, explain why it was that he was here, sitting across from her.
- As he stared into those deep red eyes, all the words seemed to leave him. The whole world seemed to fall apart and he let out a soft noise somewhere between an eep and a squeak.
- It was like the entire dictonery of words just vanished from within his head, and in that moment he froze up like a rabbit in a set of headlights, a moment that in actual time spanned several seconds and managed to make the black griffon tilt her head.
- “Yes, what is it?” She said, her voice spilling from within a bright yellow beak in the same way he pictured melting chocolate would sound. It certainly did not help him find his words any faster, and in the end he realized there was no way his brain was going to recall his original speech, he was going to have to come up with a new one, on the spot. Right this second.
- Unfortunately for him, this really was not one of his strong suits.
- “Hello,” He begin, followed by an uncomtable pause as he raced over the sentances he might be able to tack onto that, finally settling on “I just had to come and say that you are the most amazing griffon I’ve ever seen, your beauty knows no bounds, and I’d rather like to buy you a drink and then deidicate my life to trying my best to please you in whichever way you so desire.”
- Yes, his speech skills were really not the best, and for several moments he expected the female griffon to reach across the table and slap him for being so stupid, for her talons to sink deep into his flesh and leave bloody rend marks across it.
- And now he was starting to get an erection. This likely could not have gone any worse then it already had, and he was quite sure that he could feel his face dripping off his skull. He really hoped that that was not the onset of a stress enduced stroke, he was only in his late 40’s, it was far too early to be doing stuff like that.
- The griffon tilted her head the other way, then slowly straightened up in her seat, her eyes looking over him, reading every single ounce of the expression on his face, before realizing that he was in fact serious, and that this was not some kind of cruel prank.
- And then she begin to laugh. It was not a mocking, cruel laugh designed to destroy any hope that Hatter had remaining, much rather it was the kind of laughter angels would give, the kind of laughter that was like bird song and would raise the spirits of all those that heard it.
- Despite her laughter being one of the most amazing sounds that he had ever heard, it still sent his spirits into a downward spiral of crushing defeat. This was it, she was laughing at him, and as soon as she was done laughing at him, she was going to tell him to go away, that his love and affection were not needed, and that he was beneath her.
- His expression dropped even further, which he was not even sure should have been possible. After several moments of laughter, she looked back towards Hatter and realized that she had totally crushed him, and suddenly her own face saddened and she leaned back slightly in the chair, giving the briefest of expressions to show shock before she spoke.
- “I’m sorry! It’s just, you walked up to my table and dumped all that on me in a super serious voice, and I just never expected that. You must really like me, huh?”
- Hatter stiffly nodded to the best of his ability, which earned a soft smile from the griffon, who moved a talon up to rest her head on “Well then, maybe you should buy me a drink first, and we’ll discuss the matter further?”
- The stallion almost fell over his own hooves in his haste to get up, horn glowing to life as he dug around in his jacket, desperately searching for his wallet. He was in that much of a hurry that when he did finally take his wallet out, he practically threw it at the poor griffon, watching as it fell open and spilled his meger earnings all over the table, showing the mare how poor he was.
- Right now he was far too high on hope to care however, his horn glowing again as he desperately jammed the small metal coins back into his wallet and turned to walk into the cafe.
- He was pretty sure that as he headed inside, he heard the griffon make an offer to buy the drinks instead, but there was no way he was going to let that happen, and so he totally ignored it.
- His heart was doing that thing where it was beating far too fast, threatening to stop at any moment, but he did not care. He did not care about anything at the moment, he did not care about the fact the ponies around him were giving him funny looks, nor the fact he had forgot to ask what kind of milkshake she wanted.
- Well, that last one might prove to be a bit more of a problem, but he would just order the same as she had drunk before, it would be easy.
- He barely even remembered ordering the milkshake, one moment he was going into the cafe and in the next he was coming out with a strawberry milkshake clutched triumphently in his magic like some kind of war trophee.
- For a moment he considered the fact that the female might have left, taken the time it had taken him to order the milkshake to hightail it out of there and go back to her comfy life before the scruffy stallion managed to come back and embrass her further.
- But no, when he did finally get out there, the griffon was still sat there in all her glory, and he had to fight off the urge to get a boner as he moved back to the table and set down the milkshake before her.
- “Here you go! I forgot to ask what you wanted, so I just got you strawberry.”
- The griffon smiled softly, which looked a bit odd as she had a beak instead of a row of white teeth, but it still made his heart flutter, or maybe that was just because the increased heart rate had put too much strain on it and it was finally giving up.
- He was not sure, but it was just another thing to stick on the list of things he did not currently care about.
- “So, I guess I should start with my name. It’s Ruby, what is yours, strange stallion?”
- Hatter stumbled over his words and let out a soft squeak rather then just giving his name, then quickly tried to retrace his steps, while trying his best to hold off on having a panic attack.
- The griffon female was very paitent however, simply giving a soft smile as she watched him stumble over his words and try to think of something so simple as his name.
- “I-I I- I It i- Hatter.” He finally managed to say, really struggling with his
