- SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early '80s, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up. We see the story through the eyes of Will, the eldest son of a fatherless Plymouth Brethren family. The Brethren regard themselves as God's 'chosen ones' and their strict moral code means that Will has never been allowed to mix with the other 'worldlies,' listen to music or watch TV, until he finds himself caught up in the extraordinary world of Lee Carter, the school terror and maker of bizarre home movies. Carter exposes Will to a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood and from that moment Will's mind is blown wide open and he's easily convinced to be the stuntman in Lee Carters' diabolical home movie. Will's imaginative little brain is not only given chance to flourish in the world of film making, but is also very handy when it comes to dreaming up elaborate schemes to keep his partnership with Lee Carter a secret from the Brethren community. Will and Carter's complete disregard for consequences and innocent ambition means that the process of making their film is a glorious roller-coaster that eventually leads to true friendship. They start to make a name for themselves at school as movie makers but when popularity descends on them in the form of the Pied Piper-esque French exchange student, Didier Revol, their unique friendship and their precious film are pushed, quite literally, to breaking point.
- Garth Jennings' entertaining film, 'Son of Rambow', is a sprightly comedy that tells the story of two boys who set out to make their own sequel to Sylvester Stallone's bloodthirsty hit. The movie's charm lies in the fact that their vision is both fantastic and yet falls within, just, the range of the possible; and a strain of class struggle provides some slightly darker context. There's also (less originally) a religious brotherhood and an androgynous French visitor to add to the mix. Although more professional than the boys' fictional film, there's an enthusiastic (almost amateurish) feeling to 'Son of Rambow', and I've seen films with young actors who've given stronger performances. But it's still a hard film not to enjoy.
- Despite the brief images of violence, a couple of children smoking, and some children using profanity, "Son of Rambow", written and directed by music-video-director-turned-movie- director Garth Jennings, of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is a funny, sweet and rather peculiar family fantasy for the filmmaker in you. Set in 1980's England when the first Rambo flick, "First Blood" became big in theaters, the movie follows bully Lee Carter (Will Poulter) and artistic Plymouth Brethren Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner). These two are not good friends to begin with, but Lee uses Will to be a part of his new movie he's making inspired by "First Blood" (Actually, it's Will's idea, after seeing the movie) for his participation on the vintage BBC show "Screen Test". Turns out, everyone wants to be a part of the movie, including French New- Wave kid, Didier (Jules Sitruk) and even Lee's brother, Lawrence (Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick). While the film is in progress and their friendship is being tested, they realize that the near-fatal consequences wouldn't keep them apart from their friendship. This is a rather amazing film that really got me interested with a talented young and old cast. Poulter and Milner creates a realistic and fun chemistry as the two friends. Other supporting players including Jessica Stevenson as Will's mother, Asa Butterfield from "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" as a Plymouth Brethren child and scenes involving Sylvester Stallone in "First Blood". I hope this film will entertain the entire family and I bless Jennings for inspiring himself to make a film about the kid in all of us. This is an enjoyable film.

It was inspired by Jennings' own experiences as a child in the 1980s, when video equipment first became available to the public. No. Son of Rambow isn't about Rambo; rather, it's about young boys who are inspired to make their own video after having seen <a href="/title/tt0083944/">First Blood (1982)</a> (1982). Apparently, the spelling had to be changed because of problems with copyright infringement. It is also a way of communicating to moviegoers that the film is not part of the Rambo series, which it would have seemed at first glance if spelled correctly. The "mistake" is acknowledged in a brief dialogue between the film's two protagonists at the end of the credits. In England education is compulsory until the age of 16, but many students stay on until they are 18. The school years when a student is 16 (or 17) and 17 (or 18) are respectively called the lower and upper sixth form (or year 12 and 13). Many schools have separate buildings for these years, and nearly all have common rooms for sixth-formers. The common room is an area where pupils can spend time when they don't have classes. Younger years will generally not have any free periods and so don't need such a facility; it therefore emphasizes the boys' new-found popularity as they normally wouldn't have been allowed in. Several people have noted that Son of Rambow reminds them of Stephen King's <a href="/title/tt0092005/">Stand by Me (1986)</a> (1986) in the way that it provides a nostalgic look at the camaraderie, the coming of age, the bittersweet vulnerability, and the fantastic humor of childhood. <a href="/title/tt0095765/">Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)</a> (1988) has similar themes.
