- When to include “by” + agent:
- The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
- It was completed in 1506. (I wouldn’t repeat the by-phrase because you already know who did it.)
- My car was stolen by someone. (We probably wouldn’t say “by someone” if we don’t know who did it.)
- Soccer is played in every country. (We don’t need to say “by people”, because it’s obvious.)
- ---
- p. 168 practice 2 - Change the active sentences to passive. Use “by” + agent if appropriate.
- 1 The goods will be transported to Asia by ship. (or “on a ship”; “by ship” is not the agent, it’s just telling us the type of transportation used, like, “I go to school by train.”)

- perfect = [have] + past partciple
- continuous / progressive = [be] + verb(ing) = [be] + present participle
- passive = [be] + past participle
- We put these together in this same order:
- perfect continuous = [have] + been + verb(ing)
- perfect passive = [have] + been + past participle
- continuous passive = [be] + being + past participle
- perfect continuous passive (not common) = [have] + been + being + past participle
- (We do sometimes use it with “getting” instead of “being”.)
- He has been being bullied at school. (strange) -> He has been getting bullied at school. (okay)
