- The main ones I follow are:
- TYT's main show
- TYT's politics youtube channel
- Secular Talk
- I mainly get my politics from Youtube, I don't follow any written sources in any dedicated fashion but I've listed a couple that are worth looking at.
- ---
- The Young Turks and their network:
- TYT is funded by their users, with membership on their website (giving access to their full show anytime, as well as some exclusive shows and parts of shows). They also crowdfunded for their journalists; they had 1 journalist over the whole of 2016 who was paid for just through their regular membership contributions, and was regularly covering important issues such as the Dakota Access Pipeline, Flint's water crisis, the WikiLeaks revelations, and so on. They crowdfunded $2m from their audience which got 14 people overall, about 5 for investigative journalists specifically. They're largely on Youtube, but they have some written presence on Medium too. They're the biggest news network on Youtube, and significantly outperform any other news network. 3 mil subs, > 80 million unique viewers a year, etc.
- TYT's Main Show:
- This is their website: https://tytnetwork.com/
- To find their live stream: https://tytnetwork.com/live/
- It's on 6pm - 8pm ET (not sure what that is in your time) Monday to Friday.
- If you don't have the time to watch them live, they put cuts of their show on: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheYoungTurks
- On Election night, their Youtube stream had as many as ABC news.
- They've had Bernie Sanders on twice, interviewed by their CEO and Founder Cenk Uygur. Cenk also got to introduce Bernie at a few rallies in California, and got to have dinner with him too. They've had Jill Stein on twice too, and in the 2012 election hosted a debate between Jill Stein and Gary Johnson (the Green and Libertarian candidates).
- Related TYT Shows:
- Related ones include any that are basically recorded in their LA studios. Hosts on these are often seen on their main show too.
- TYT Politics: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuMo0RRtnNDuMB8DV5stEag/
- The TYT politics youtube channel is probably the next best thing to pay attention to on this list. Any videos by their investigative journalists get posted on here, as well as a couple of others, such as Ryan Grim (who is HuffPost's Washington Bureau chief of staff or something) who posts short segments which first go live on Facebook. I'd also suggest subscribing to getting an email from Ryan Grim when he publishes new stories; you can do that here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/author/ryan-grim
- TYT Interviews: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKw8kdkYfmuNSVehGoDw8Mg
- In-depth interviews generally get posted here and sometimes are also posted on the main channel.
- Jimmy Dore: http://www.youtube.com/user/TYTComedy
- I don't personally really watch him but he does some good stuff. He comes from the more staunchly progressive angle, which supported Jill Stein in the general moreso than the main show did. He's a comedian but I don't personally find him all that funny though he does have some good jokes. Very progressive, pretty cathartic, worth at least knowing about even if you don't watch it regularly.
- TYT also has a Sports channel, called TYT sports, a film review show called What The Flick?!, a pop culture channel called Pop Trigger, a more casual and fun channel dealing primarily with social issues called ThinkTank, and a show for gamers, nerds, etc. called Nerd Alert.
- John Iadarola: https://www.youtube.com/user/johniadarola
- One of TYT's main hosts has his own channel which he posts the occasional video to. Always political.
- Other shows on TYT's Network:
- These shows aren't necessarily funded by TYT themselves and may have more independence financially etc. They're all pretty good.
- My favourite one is this:
- Secular Talk: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCldfgbzNILYZA4dmDt4Cd6A
- Hosted by Kyle Kulinski, he's very sharp and funny. As the name suggests he does sometimes deal with issues pertaining to secularism and atheism, but really it's a broader political talk channel. Shows are uploaded in cuts on Youtube, and he also puts the 'Kyle & Corin' podcasts on Youtube, which are more casual conversation with his best friend. Trust me, you should watch him, he's great :3 Amusingly even though it's just 1 person and maybe an editor or two, he often outperforms CNN in the key advertising demographic (namely millenials) to give you a sense of scale, and just how big independent media is in spite of where the money is currently flowing.
- In addition, it was Kyle Kulinski along with Cenk Uygur, TYT's host, and a couple of people from Bernie Sander's campaign who came up with Justice Democrats. The idea behind Justice Democrats is to take over the party with progressives from the inside, rather than do a third party approach. The fundamental thing that every Justice Democrat must agree with to be considered a Justice Democrat is that of wanting proper campaign finance reform, that is, taking no corporate money, no pac money, no big donor money on the trail into office - so only taking money in small individual donations, from the people, with the goal being that in office we can have publicly financed elections. Everything else is negotiable, but their platform can be found here: https://justicedemocrats.com/platform/
- On their website's homepage you can find TYT's video introducing JDems (about 15 minutes long), and here is Secular Talk's video (about an hour long): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj_95Ld2g9I
- At the very least, you should sign your name in support of them on their website. :)
- Important related videos:
- How did Justice Democrats come about? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzLnI-DB81I
- Justice Democrats mentioned on MSNBC - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1bGGwr7dQ0
- They have announced their first candidate already, Cori Bush. She already has the endorsement of sitting House of Representatives member Ro Khanna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQW149b9zBc
- Also, very much worth discussing is WolfPAC. This is an effort to pass a constitutional amendment demanding free and fair elections, that is, publicaly financed elections. It is going through the state legislatures: currently they have the backing of I think 6 states which have already passed it, some of which are republican states if I remember rightly. Whilst congress is bought off, the same is not so true at the state level. The website is http://wolf-pac.com/ I think they already have California so no work for you to do here :P it's non-partisan, all it, as an organisation, cares about, is campaign finance reform.
- other important ones:
- The Majority Report with Sam Seder: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-3jIAlnQmbbVMV6gR7K8aQ
- I guess perspective-wise this leans closer to the establishment / right-wing end of the spectrum within TYT, but that spectrum doesn't go so far as to even support Hillary Clinton or anything. The people on here are pro-Bernie and progressives, don't get it twisted. Usually a couple of cuts from their show + the full, long show often posted too. Worth the odd glance at least.
- The Humanist Report: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Q4rvzJDbHeBHYk5rnvZeA
- pretty good channel too, focussed more heavily on democratic party politics. Worth having a try and seeing what you think of it, I like to watch it occasionally.
- The Bill Press Show: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQuX4jRgybTdKu5YvVKfVSw
- TYT's inside-the-beltway channel, Bill Press reports in Washington every day. Quite dry, I wouldn't watch it often but there's some advantages to that location, I enjoyed watching the interview with Bernie Sanders on there for example. :3
- Non-TYT:
- Democracy Now: https://www.youtube.com/user/democracynow
- Quite dry, good for more in-depth reporting, better coverage of world issues than TYT perhaps does. Amy Goodman is a deservedly award-winning journalist. Definitely give it a glance but it's not as entertaining as TYT and some of its network shows are.
- The David Pakman Show: https://www.youtube.com/user/MidweekPolitics
- Personally not a big fan and feel maybe his coverage gets a bit lost in the weeds sometimes
- Outside of Youtube, I'll recommend a couple of written places:
- The Intercept: https://theintercept.com/
- They're probably the best written source around. Glenn Greenwald is a legendary investigative journalist and one of the editors of the online publication.
- truthdig: http://www.truthdig.com/
- Also good, progressive
