- Why do I have to use Yellow? I want to play Red/Blue.
- 1.) Yellow Brock is nerfed at L15/L18 compared to L18/L21 in Red/Blue, but the Gyms in Yellow from Lt. Surge onward, on average, are 10 levels higher than in Red/Blue (except for Erika's, which is 6 levels higher).
- 2.) The Elite 4/Champion fights are the same levels in both.
- 3.) This prevents everything in the mid-game from being an absolute joke.
- 4.) No concessions will be made for those who choose Red/Blue. If you get past Red/Blue Brock, then you deserve the easier mid-game. Congratulations.
- Why are we using the Slow EXP curve here? And what about evolving into legendaries on this curve?
- 1.) There is no Fluctuating EXP curve in Gen 1.
- 2.) Therefore, run the Initial Randomizer String to set all of the required settings (see end of this page for strings).

- Kaizo Gen 1 Victory Condition - Defeat Champion after Elite Four.
- Team Composition / Usable Pokemon Rules:
- 1.) Starter will always be chosen at random. No favorites.
- 2.) Only one usable Pokemon at all times. The second can be an HM friend. If you want to switch to a Pokemon seen in the wild, declare it before catching it, and it becomes your new leader. Same applies for gifted Pokemon.
- 3.) Full ban on > 480 BST Pokemon:
- Zapdos;
- Moltres;
- Articuno;
- Mew;
- Mewtwo;
- Dragonite;
- If it's the lab Pokemon, then reroll your seed.
- 4.) Pokemon evolution cannot be stopped.
- 5.) On a team wipe, the run ends.
- 6.) Static Pokemon will not have a level increase. Forced Fully Evolved at Level 30. No "Make Evolutions Easier."
- 7.) "Force Change" is disabled. This is to add a bit more variety in evos, and to stop Dratini from directly evolving into Dragonite.
- 8.) No TM or Move Tutor usage except for TMs gotten from Gym Leaders. Only use these or the moves your Pokemon learns naturally.
- 9.) In-game trades are randomized, so if you have the Pokemon the NPC wants, you're free to execute the trade no matter what.
- Route / Dungeon / Travel Rules:
- 1.) Can only catch one Pokemon per route. Not allowed to faint wild Pokemon anymore.
- 2.) You may only catch a Pokemon that is up to four levels higher than your current lead.
- 3.) In the event of KO'ing a wild Pokemon while scouting a pivot, you DO NOT have to reset your run or take an item penalty. Instead, you must pivot to one of the Pokemon in that route before leaving, no exceptions. This means you cannot go and heal UNTIL another new Pokemon is caught as a pivot.
- 4.) One-Shot Gyms and Dungeons. Once a Gym/Dungeon is entered, there is no leaving until it’s complete. For Gyms, all trainers must be defeated.
- 5.) Dungeons are defined as:
- Mt. Moon;
- Diglett's Cave;
- S.S. Anne;
- Rock Tunnel;
- Rocket Game Corner + Rocket Hideout;
- Lavender Tower;
- Silph Co.;
- Seafoam Islands;
- Victory Road.
- 6.) Healing items/PP restoring items/status curing items cannot be used outside of battle. PP Up/PP Max OK.
- 7.) No Pokecenter healing in dungeons, such as the safezone in Lavender Tower, or the bed in Silph Co.
- Bypass the one in Lavender Tower by initiating the trainer fight such that they move to open the path to the next floor.
- 8.) Adding three additional Pokemon to boss trainers is not do-able in Gen 1, so don't worry about this.
- 9.) Immediately fight Gary on the S.S. Anne before doing anything else.
- 10.) Immediately fight Gary in Lavender Tower before doing anything else (Pokemon Center OK).
- Battle Rules:
- 1.) No HM moves in battle are allowed.
- 2.) No healing moves allowed in battle:
- Recover;
- Softboiled;
- Mega Drain;
- Leech Life;
- Leech Seed;
- Dream Eater.
- No Spore allowed in battle
- No trapping moves allowed in battle:
- Wrap;
- Bind;
- Fire Spin;
- Clamp.
- 3.) The exception to rule 2 above is in the initial Lab fight. Banned moves can be used here and ONLY here; once you leave the lab, you must pivot or simply not use those moves.
- 4.) 50% level increase on trainers and wild Pokemon.
- 5.) Battles on “Set” mode.
- 6.) If your HM Friend is swapped in through Roar, Whirlwind, or a related move, swap a team member back in immediately.
- 7.) OK to box your HM buddy when you don't need it.
- Example: OK to box when battling trainers on Cycling Road.
- Example: NOT OK to box when tackling Vermillion Gym, as you need CUT to access the gym.
- 8.) Hyper Beam usage is OK. (referring to no recharge time when KO'ing opponent).
- Item Rules:
- 1.) Can’t buy anything at stores except Pokeballs, Repels, and the one Fresh Water/Soda Pop/Lemonade needed to enter Saffron City.
- 2.) No playing of the Poke Flute in battle.
- Can I access Saffron City early because random Items resulted me picking up Fresh Water/Soda Pop/Lemonade?
- Yes, this is legal, but with conditions:
- What you can do: collect items and fight non-story related trainers.
- What you cannot do: Skip Rock Tunnel. Enter Rocket Game Corner/Lavender Town/Celadon Gym. Buy a drink to replace the item you used for early Saffron access.
- You still have to go through Rock Tunnel to get to Lavender Town and progress as normal.
