	` Max is a Mist user with Ether wings. The other two with Ether wings are Ether users.



	The septet's rations were provided in two equal containers, because an uneasy tradition had developed. Settlement leadership was typically disconnected from its people, and thought of food as if it were a luxury commodity. Thus, in addition to providing useful support like materiel, settlements would try to bribe septets with excessive amounts of food. Half the septet's rations would be split among the seven, while the other half would be spread among their support personnel, who would keep some and distribute some to the settlement's needy. Individual septet members would usually repeat this on a personal level with their own rations, whatever exceeds the considerable needs of users of their magic. If there were any imbalance then the septet would take the smaller container, so their rations were provided in two carefully-equal containers. The wealthy don't understand charity, and thus the middle classes must provide for the lower.

	Rachel unlatched and doffed her helmet, tucking it under her right arm. "I'm not a monster, I'm not dangerous to you. I'm only dangerous to monsters, and you're not a monster either. You're an elf like me."
	The boy poked his head out from behind the ruins, then slowly emerged, but lingered by his hiding place. He was skinny, with his ribs visible on his bare midriff. His short shirt was the rough-sewn remnants of three shirts, and his skirt looked improvised from some building material left here. His skin was pale and his right ear was notched, but he was indeed an elf.
	She turned to survey the ruins, finding a low stone wall to settle on. She set her helmet to her right, with an empty spot to her left, and fished out a snack stick from one of her hip compartments. Once rent in half, she held half in each hand, taking a bite of the right and offering the left to him.
	He approached, but shyly and haltingly, so she took her eyes off him.
	Snack sticks for septets were typically breaded meat, and this one was poultry in potato bread, with a hint of beef as a taste of greater luxury.
	However, it was not the beef flavoring but the nourishment that drew him. Once close enough, he rushed to sit beside her and take the half-stick and cram it in his mouth, his cheeks puffed up like a chipmunk. She gave him a nod but focused on her own half. His cheeks slowly deflated as he took bites from them, chewed perfunctorily, and swallowed greedily. His actions spoke volumes; he didn't live alone, and if there were adults then they didn't pay enough attention to the children to keep them from robbing each other.
