55. Near the small desert town of Santa Ynez, a mysterious black car runs down two teenage bicyclers en route to camp, then it hit-and-runs a hitchhiker with local Amos Clements as witness. Sheriff Everett puts his men on alert and plants road blocks in the area to arrest the murderer, but soon he himself falls victim to the car. Sheriff Wade Parent leads the hunt for the vehicle that threatens their town and seems impossible to locate. When his beloved girlfriend, teacher Lauren Humphries, challenges the driver in a cemetery, the car hunts her in her home. Wade realizes he might be dealing with supernatural powers.
 56. A mysterious black, sleek automobile terrorizes everyone it comes into contact with in a small town in Utah. The local sheriff may be the only person who can stop this menace which has been possessed by pure evil.
 57. In this 70's drive in classic a small, isolated desert community is visited by a sinister presence who sets out to mow down anyone who ventures in the streets. As such is the case in films like this, the problem is not just your garden variety hit and run driver. That would be too simple. The Sheriff (James Brolin) is forced to admit that the problem is that Satan has shown up in the form of a possessed car.

Although this film was dismissed on first release as a Jaws rip-off it has slowly found its audience thanks to very positive word of mouth. This fast paced, dumb as dirt, thriller has become a cult favorite thanks to its absurd premise (and its willingness to run with it) and some surprising drama. Ronny Cox delivers a strong performance as a alcoholic cop who has trouble dealing with the stress of the killings, especially when one strikes close to home.

The sequence involving the school teacher standing on hallowed ground with her students taunting the evil car as it revs and roars on the edge of the property has to stand as some bizarro masterpiece and the way she meets her ultimate end is a true horror classic. Any movie where a wife beater gets to stand up and join the good guys for some last reel heroics deserves a special place of honour on anyones DVD shelf and Anchor Bay has created a great one (thats sadly out of print) that allowed viewers to spot the long rumoured demon in explosion which was much harder to see on the murkier fullscreen VHS transfer from the eighties.

All in all, a good time for anyone who appreciates either car crashes or just weird cinema in general.
 58. Okay, so this might not be the most superbly plotted horror movie of the wonderful 70's decade, and indeed the plot is mainly just a mixture of similarly themed Steven Spielberg films like "Duel" and "Jaws", but … who cares?!? "The Car" guarantees thrills, suspense and excitement for an hour and a half straight, the cast is terrific, the filming locations are atmospheric & breathtaking and the demonic titular vehicle is one massively engaging depiction of pure evil! I, for one, simply love this picture and can't help praising it and I would definitely recommend even the most skeptical horror fan to watch it. Because, despite the absurd and implausible sounding concept, "The Car" actually manages to be genuinely creepy, plus the deaths and chases are extremely spectacular; that's all you need to know! The plot can be summarized quite easily. A fairly well populated (judging by the initial amount of deputies and school children) Californian community is under the reign of terror of a devilishly black and seemingly driverless car. The more attempts Sheriff Wade Parent (James Brolin – woohoo!) undertakes to stop the fierce vehicle, the more aggressive and relentless its attacks on innocent citizens become. It'll require the collaboration of the entire town to defeat these hellish wheels. I truly appreciate how the script doesn't waste any time figuring out the origin of evil before trying to stop it. The no-nonsense, destroy first and ask questions later attitude of the cop characters is probably why this movie remains enjoyable from start to finish without ever featuring a single dull moment. Efficient suspense is marvelously achieved through simple tricks, like isolated filming locations, the constant use of ominous music and – most of all – the unforgettably eerie sounds produced by the car itself, like its rough engine and the rhythmic horn. Several sequences are literally oozing with legitimate suspense and I guarantee you'll be sitting on the edge of your seat. Some highlights include the shocking first deaths during the pre-credits intro, an extended scene taking place in an old graveyard, a macho man versus car showdown inside a garage, the unpredictable living room attack and much more. Elliot Silverstein ("A Man Called Horse") does a solid job directing this sadly neglected gem of the 70's trash-industry and the ensemble cast nearly couldn't be more perfect. James Brolin is the excellent Sheriff of a town filled with familiar faces, like R.G. Armstrong, John Rubinstein, Roy Jenson and the always-amazing Ronny Cox. "The Car" comes with my highest possible recommendation.

 60. The demonic car in this film was designed by George Barris, who specialized in custom cars and who worked on a number of film and television projects, including the car driven by TV's "The Munsters", Herbie "The Love Bug", and the vehicle driven by the heroes in "Ghostbusters". For "The Car", Barris modified a 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III. a5c7b9f00b
