Chapter 217 - Cliff's Return Home
　ミリス神聖国の首都ミリシオンに到着した。
We arrived at the capital of the Holy Kingdom of Milis.

　この町に来るのも久しぶりだ。
I've finally come back to this city after such a long time.
　転移魔法陣を設置した時もミリスという国には来たが、首都には訪れなかった。
Though I visited Milis when I installed the teleportation circle, I didn't visit the capital.
　だから、人生で二度目だな。
So, this is only the second time in my life.

　前に来た時は北側からで、当時の光景はいまでも思い出せる。
Even now I remember the scene I saw approaching the city from the north.
　青竜山脈から流れる川が湖へと流れこむ様、湖の中央には純白のホワイトパレスが浮かんでいて、川沿いには金色の大聖堂や、銀色の冒険者ギルドが建っていた。
The river flowing from the Blue Dragon Mountain into the lake, the pure white palace floating in its center, the golden cathedral along the riverside, and the silver Adventurers' Guild.
　そして町を囲むように配置された七つの塔と、大きく広がる草原地帯。
The seven towers encircling the city, surrounded by a vast meadow.
　……あ。
... Ah.

「尊厳と調和。二つを併せ持つ、この世界で最も美しい都市である」
"Dignity and harmony. It exemplifies the two, making it the most beautiful city in the world."

　だったかな。
I think that was it.
　光景が昔読んだ本の解説そのままだったから、なんとなく覚えていた。
Even though it was so long ago, I still remember that line.
　いや懐かしい、あれ、なんて本だったかな。
How nostalgic, that book.
　そうそう、冒険家・ブラッディーカント著『世界を歩く』だ。
Ah yes, [Walking the World] by Adventurer Bloody Count.
　今思うとすごい名前だけど、あれ、誰が書いたんだろうな。
It's an amazing name, I wonder what kind of person would have that kind of name.

　旅をしてる途中、ブラッディーカントなんて名前の冒険者の話は聞かなかった。
While travelling, I never heard of an adventurer by that name.
　相当に昔の人間なのだろうか。
He might be from a considerably long time ago.
　なんでパウロはあんな本持ってたんだろう。
I wonder why Paul had such a book.
　まあいいか。
Well it's fine.

　南から見るミリシオンも、やはり美しい。
Milishion is beautiful from the south as well.
　高い塔と高い城壁のおかげで不要なものは一切見えない。
You can't see anything unnecessary thanks to the high towers and walls.
　ただ清廉な白銀の城だけが光を反射してキラキラと光っている。
Only a pure silver-like palace glitstening in the light.
　城壁が城以外を隠していることで、城の美しさが際立って見える。
The beauty of that palace stands out, the walls conceal everything else.
　シンプル・イズ・ベスト。
Simple is best.

「そうだな、この都は世界で一番美しい」
"Yeah, this city is the most beautiful in the world."

　ポツリと言ったのは、クリフだった。
Cliff said with a sigh.
　独り言を聞かれてしまったようだ。
He seems to have been overheard.

「でも、その中身はきっと、世界で一番汚い」
"But surely its contents are the dirtiest in the world."

　クリフの瞳には、ホワイトパレスだけが映っていた。
In Cliff's eyes, only the white palace had been reflected.
　今の彼にとって、あの美しい城は威圧感を与える存在なのかもしれない。
Now, that beautiful palace might be intimidating.
　これから、戦場になる町なのだ。そう思うのも当然だろう。
From now on, this city is a battlefield. Thinking so would only be natural.

　実際の所、アスラ王国の方が内部は汚いと思う。

　アリエルも、その他の貴族たちも、だいたい中身が汚かった。

　今回、俺は気軽な立場だ。

　ミリシオンには４つの入り口がある。
There are four entrances to Milishion.
　前の時は、冒険者区から入った。
Last time, we entered from the Adventurer's District.
　理由は確か、町の外の人間がそれ以外の入り口から入ると、面倒な事になるから、だったかな。
That's because when an outsider uses any other entrance it becomes a troublesome thing.
　ともあれ、城壁をぐるりと回って、最も活気のある出入り口から入った事は覚えている。
Anyway, as we went around the wall, I remembered that lively entrance.

　今回も同様だ。
It's the same this time.
　ただ、今回はクリフがいるため、入口にこだわる必要はない。
However, because Cliff is here, there's no need to wait at the entrance.
　南側にある冒険者区の入口が、最も近かったのだ。
The entrance to the Adventurers' District on the south side was the closest.
　もっとも、あくまで近いというだけだ。
In fact, it was near last.
　人通りの多い町中を通るより、人通りのない外周を走った方が、時間的には早かっただろう。急がばまわれってヤツだな。

　しかし、クリフは言ったのだ。

「久しぶりに町中を見たい」

　なにしろ、久しぶりの故郷、十年ぶりの故郷だ。
After all, being away for so long, it's his first time back in 10 years.
　これから何年も暮らしていく事にはなるだろうが、今日という日は特別だ。
Though he'll likely be here for many years to come, today is a special day.
　入口から家までの道を行く途中、あれは昔のままだ、あそこには昔あれがあったと郷愁に浸る。
The road home, remembering it from the old days, it's soaked in nostalgia.
　それが出来る機会は多くはなく、今がその機会だ。
There aren't a lot of opportunities, now's my chance.

　というわけで、俺はクリフの言葉に従い、真正面から馬車を乗り入れたのだ。
So, at Cliff's request, we rode in the front of the carriage.

「懐かしいな……」
"I've missed this..."

　クリフはミリスの美しい門をくぐった時に、ぽつりとそう言った。
Cliff said that to himself as we passed under the gate, and looked back out at Milis.<!--Reordered-->
　クリフは神聖区の出身で、あまり冒険者区には行かなかったと聞いている。

　けれども、なぜか冒険者区の門を見て、目を細めていた。
Yet, looking out from the gate at the Adventurers' District, he smiled.
　何か、思い出せるようなエピソードでもあるのだろうか。
Hmm, I wonder what memories he'd have here.

　俺がこの町にいたのは、せいぜい一週間程度だ。
When I last came here, I only stayed for around a week.
　思い出されるのはパウロとの事ばかり。
The only memory I have here is Paul.
　それはそれで深く思い出せば涙も出てくるが、それ以外に思い出というほどの思い出はない。
If I remember it too deeply, tears start to come out, it's an unforgettable memory.

　だから、周囲を見て思うのは未来の事だ。
So, looking around, I can't help but think of the future.
　これから、この町で作る傭兵団について。

　周囲には、冒険者が歩きまわっている。
Around us, adventurers are strolling about.
　アスラ王国に比べて獣族や長耳族といった種族が多い。
Compared to Asura Kingdom there are a lot of Beast Race and Elves.
　冒険者のランクは様々だが、服装を見れば大体わかる。
Adventurers' ranks vary, but you can guess from their clothes.
　明らかに中古の装備に身を包んでいる１５、６歳ぐらいの少年少女は駆け出しだ。
15-16 year old boys and girls wearing second-hand equipment are obviously fledglings.
　新品の装備を身につけているのが、１８歳ぐらいの初級。
Wearing new equipment, beginners are around 18 years old.
　新品と使い古された装備が入り混じった２０代が中堅。
Adventurers in their 20s wearing a mix of new and worn-out equipment are mid-level.
　一見すると使い古された、しかし実は魔力付与品(マジックアイテム)らしきものや、高級なものに身を包んでいるものがベテラン。
Although their equipment can look worn out at first glance, veterans can be seen wearing various magic items, which are some of the highest-grade gear.
　職業は様々だが、ミリス教団のお膝元という事もあって、治癒魔術師が多く、魔術師が少ない。
Though their professions vary, in the capital of Milis' religious community, there are many magicians who specialize in healing but few in offense.

　魔法都市シャリーアでは、歴戦の戦士・剣士と、駆け出しの魔術師が多かった。
In the Magic City Sharia, you'd see veteran warriors and swordsmen, and lots of fledgling magicians.
　魔法大学で生まれた冒険者志望の魔術師の卵を、歴戦の戦士たちがスカウトするような形だ。
The dream of being an adventurer sprouts for magicians at the Magic University, and veterans come to scout them.<!--Originally an egg metaphor, I couldn't make it work well in English.-->
　種族は人族と獣族が多かった。
There were mostly humans and Beast Race.
　獣族が多いのは、リニアとプルセナの長期滞在が関係していたのだろう。
Well regarding the Beast Race, they may have just followed Rinia and Pursena then ended up staying.

　アスラ王国の首都アルスでは、右を見ても左を見ても駆け出しばかりだった。
In Asura's capital Ars, you would only see fledglings.<!--I feel like the capital should be pronounced differently from Arus-kun's name.-->
　学校の類が充実しているため、職業に偏りは少ない。
Because there's so much schooling, there's a bit of a professional bias.
　ただ、種族は人族ばかりだった。
Also, there were only humans.
　人族以外の種族は、大抵中堅かベテランで、すぐに王都を発っていく。
Other races, and most experienced or veteran adventurers, don't linger in the capital.

　ミリスにおける冒険者の人種と熟練度がバラけているのは、大森林が近いからだろう。
There are probably so many different races and skilled adventurers in Milis because the Great Forest is so close.
　大森林から獣族、長耳族、小人族、炭鉱族といった種族の駆け出しが南下し、
The Beast, Elf, and Hobbit races come from the Great Forest, and Dwarves from the south.
　ミリス側で実績を積んだ冒険者が、魔物の強い大森林へと北上する。
After piling up experience in central Milis, adventurers head north to fight stronger demons in the Great Forest. <!--Holy fuck I do not want to translate a god damn cultural lesson.-->
　だが、大森林には冒険者ギルドが無いため、ミリシオンを拠点とするわけだ。
But, because there's no Adventurers' Guild in the Great Forest, they use Milishion as a base.
　もっと慣れている冒険者の中には、一年の間にミリシオンとザントポートを往復しているヤツもいるだろうが。
Some adventurers familiar with Milis will spend the year traveling between Milishion and Saint Port.

　結果として、冒険者ギルドの本部もあるこの町には、偏りなく色んな冒険者が滞在する事になる。
As a result, in this city, which headquarters the Adventurers' Guild, adventurers are treated without bias.

　さて、そんな中で、どう傭兵団を立ち上げるか。
Well, in this situation, I wonder how it would be best to launch the mercenary branch.
　アスラ王国では、アリエルのコネもあって、楽に事が進んだ。
In Asura Kingdom, I had Ariel's connections, so things advanced easily.

　あの国では、『剣士』と『商人』と『貴族』があぶれていた。
There were disenfranchised swordsmen, merchants, and nobles who all welcomed the work in Asura.
　剣術道場に入ったものの兵士にはならず、冒険者にもならず、誰かに剣術を教えるコネもない平民。
Swordsmen who were raised in dojos without the dream of becoming an adventurer, or the connections to become a tutor.<!--Bring us your huddled masses and we will give them a job. That sort of feel-->
　商人の息子として生まれ、商人としての勉強をしてきたものの、店を長男に取られ、独立を余儀なくされた者。
Merchants' sons, who studied all their lives to be merchants, only to have the family shop taken over by the eldest son and forced into independence.
　そして、総合的な勉強をしてきたものの、家督をもらえず嫁ももらえない、下級貴族の三男坊、四男坊。
And, although they were all educated, there were also the third and fourth sons of the lower nobility who wouldn't receive any inheritance and couldn't be married off.

　人材を集めてみるとあら不思議、各方面にコネが出来て、兵士のやりにくい仕事を中心にうまいこと回ってくれた。
We attracted talent, and presto, we gained influence in every district, and started taking on the work that the country's soldiers couldn't.
　最終的には、アリエルの紹介でやってきた上級貴族の五男坊に支部長を任せてきた。
Ultimately, Ariel introduced the fifth son of a senior aristocrat to become the branch chief.

　いやー、あの五男坊に支部長を任せる時に面接をしたが、楽しかったな。

　返答は「身分を隠し、積極的に平民と交流していました。そうする事で、文化の違いを知ると同時に、仕事仲間一人ひとりをよく知ることの重要さを学ぶことができました」だった。
He replied [I hid my identity and interacted with the commoners. By doing so, and at the same time learning the differences in culture, I was able to learn the importance of knowing each fellow worker well.]
　受け答えが理路整然としていて、「おっ、こいつは」と思ったものだ。
His reply was articulate and thoughtful, [Oh, this guy] is what I thought.

　実際、人をまとめる能力も高かった。
In fact, he was good at bringing people together.
　貴族と平民の生活・文化の違いに熟知し、団内でモメ事が起きた時は、互いの言葉を理解して解決に導けるヤツだった。
He was familiar with the differences between the social classes, so when disputes occurred, he was a guy who could easily understand and resolve it.
　カリスマ性はなかったが、不思議と人には嫌われないタイプだった。
He didn't have charisma, but he wasn't dislikable.
　そりゃ任せるよ。

He's better suited to this than me.

Now, I want to lauch a good mercenary branch in this country.

I need human resources and a branch manager.
　傭兵団としての方向性。
And directionality for the mercenaries.
　アイシャはなにかメモを作っていたようだが、決断は現場を見てから、という判断だ。
Aisha seems to have written something like a memo, but we can only start making decisions after seeing what we have to work with.
　ゆえに、彼女も俺と同様、周囲をキョロキョロと見回している。
Therefore she's looking around restlessly like me.

　だが、ここの様子で全てを決めてしまうのは早計だ。
But, it's still too premature to decide everything now.
　ここは冒険者区だから冒険者が多いが、神聖区やら商業区、居住区もある。
Though there are a lot of adventurers in the adventurers' district, there's also the religious district, the shopping district, and the residential district.
　冒険者より、現地の人々を相手にした方がいいのは確かだ。
Not just adventurers, we should try to include the other locals as well.
　神聖区や居住区を見てから結論を出した方がいいだろう。
After seeing the religious district and the residential district we should be able to draft a plan.

「前に来た時は気にもとめなかったけど……色んな種族がいるね」
"I didn't notice last time... but there are a lot of different races here."
「大森林が近いからなぁ」
"Because the Great Forest is nearby."

　言いながら俺も周囲を見る。
I keep looking around while I answer.
　本当にいろんな種族がいる。
Really, there are a lot of races.
　１０歳ぐらいにしか見えない小人族、枯れ木のような細い手足を持つ長耳族。
A group of dwarves that must be around 10 years old, a group of elves with thin limbs that look almost like dead trees.
　獣族も色んなヤツがいる。犬、猫、ウサギ、鹿、鼠、虎、狼、羊、熊……。
There are also a lot of different beast races. Dog, cat, rabbit, deer, rat, tiger, wolf, sheep, bear...

　ふと思ったが、ああいう連中って、家畜として飼われてる牛とか豚とか見て、なんとも思わないのだろうか……。

　いや、人間が動物園で飼われてる猿を見ても、何も思わないのと同じか。

　ふと後ろを見ると、ゼニスが馬車の上で立ち上がっていた。
Looking back, I suddenly saw Zenith standing up on the horse-drawn carriage.
　アイシャが慌てて座らせようとしている中、馬車の揺れによろめきながら何かを指さしている。
Aisha panicked and tried to sit Zenith back down in a hurry while she staggered and pointed at something from the shaking carriage.
　指先の向こうにいるのは、猿だ。
Beyond her finger, it's a monkey.
　いや失礼。
Iya that's rude.
　猿のような顔をした男だ。
It's a man with a face like a monkey.

　そういえば、獣族に猿っぽいのはいない。
That reminds me, there isn't a monkey-like tribe in the beast race.
　てことは、むしろこの世界において猿は珍しいのだろうか。
Well, I wonder if monkies are rare in this world.
　ゼニスが指さして喜ぶぐらいに。
Zenith is happily pointing at him.

　ん、あの猿、どっかで見たことあるな。
Nuu, that monkey, I've seen him somewhere before.
　っていうかあれ、獣族じゃなくて……。

「おぉ！？　ゼニスに先輩じゃねえか！ どうしたんだこんな所で！」

　魔族(ギース)じゃないか。
It's a demon race (Gisu).

「いやー、まさかこんな所で会えるとは思わなかったぜ」
"Geez, I never expected to see you in a place like this."

　ギースは俺たちの姿を見かけると、すぐに馬車に乗り込んできた。
Gisu spotted us and immediately jumped onto the carriage.
　まるで遠慮がなかった。
There was no hesitation at all.
　勝手知ったる自分の馬車とでも言わんばかりだ。
But I'm not about to cast an acquaintance aside.<Ref>勝手知ったる自分の馬車とでも言わんばかりだ。Bad TL, possible reference or idiom.</ref>

「偶然ってのは恐ろしいな！　っていうか何しに来たんだよ！」
"What amazing luck! How should I put it, this is once in a lifetime luck!"

　ギースは俺たちに会えたのが、よほど嬉しかったらしい。
Gisu seems exceptionally happy to meet us.
　満面の笑みだ。
He's got a full-face smile.
　そこまで喜ばれると、俺も嬉しくなる。
Seeing that puts me in a good mood too.

「半分は仕事、半分は家のことです」
"Half the work, half the house."<Ref>「半分は仕事、半分は家のことです」 Japanese idiom/expression?</Ref>
「そうかそうか、ちなみに俺はな、聞くも涙、語るも涙の――」
"Yeah yeah, by the way, I haven't heard any tears of joy--"

　ギースは聞いてもいないのに、シャリーアで別れた後の話をしてくれた。
Gisu wasn't listening, and began telling us about what happened after we parted in Sharia.

　ギース、タルハンド、ヴェラ、シェラの四人は、予定通りアスラ王国に到着。
Gisu, Talhand, Vera, and Shera arrived on schedule in Asura Kingdom.
　そこで、吸魔石を換金し、莫大な金を手に入れた。
There, they sold the magic stones for a fortune.

　ヴェラとシェラは、その金で冒険者を引退。
Vera and Shera retired from being adventurers with their share.
　そのまま、自分たちがもともと住んでいた町へと戻ったらしい。
They returned to their hometown.
　その後の事は知らないそうだが、金はあるため、何かしらの商売を始めたんだろうとギースは言った。
Sometime after, because they had so much money, Gisu thought it would be smart to start doing some kind of business.

　さて、ギースはというと、案の定というか何というか、ギャンブルにハマった。
Well, about Gisu, how should I put it, he's addicted to gambling.
　俺はよくしらないが、アスラ王国にはギャンブル街があり、そこに入り浸ったそうだ。
I don't know much about it, but in Asura Kingdom there's a so-called gambling town.
　ギース自身がもともとギャンブルが好きなヤツだってのもあるが、大金を手にしてタガがハズレてしまったらしい。
Gisu can normally handle himself gambling, but with that much money he couldn't help but lose control.
　ギースはほんの数ヶ月で、手に入れた大金をすっかり溶かしてしまったのだそうだ。
After just a few months Gisu had lost everything and then some.

「いや、あの時はさすがにヤバかったぜ、着るものも全て取られてな、あとは命ぐらいしか賭けるものがねぇって状態だった」
"Well, everything fell apart, all I had left were the clothes on my back, so I put that life behind me and ended up here."

　きっと、そのままいくと、コンクリ詰めにされて海の底だったろう。
Surely, if you'd kept going like that, you would have ended up at the bottom of the ocean with concrete boots.
　それを助けてくれたのがタルハンドだ。
Talhand prevented that.
　彼はそろそろ次の冒険に出かけようと、ギースに挨拶しにきたところ、その場面に遭遇したそうだ。
As he was about to leave on his next adventure, he stopped by to greet Gisu, and saw him in that state.

　タルハンドは呆れながらも、工房で作ってもらったばかりの篭手を売り払い、ギースを助けたんだそうだ。
Although Talhand was disgusted, he sold off a pair of gauntlets he had made to help Gisu out.
　吸魔石を使った篭手で、これも開発費に全財産をはたいたものらしい。
Those gauntlets were made with the magic absorbing stone, apparently Talhand spent his entire fortune on development costs.

　お陰で二人は一文無し。
Thanks to Gisu two people were broke.
二人は物価の高いアスラ王国にはいられず、南へと旅立つ事になったんだそうだ。
Those two couldn't afford Asura Kingdom's high prices, so they journeyed south.
　俺だったら、さすがにそんなレベルまで金遣いの荒いなヤツを助けたり、一緒に旅をしたりはしないが、タルハンドもギースと長いから、お互い様な所とかあるんだろう。
If it were me, I'd still help a friend in a rough spot, but to that extent and then starting a journey together, I wonder if it's because they've known each other for so long that this kind of thing is just a mutual understanding.
　タルハンドも逆にギースに助けられていたり、とか。
Talhand helped Gisu, so Gisu helped Talhand.
　まぁ、友情だね。
Well, that's friendship.

　そうして二人は、内乱できな臭くなっていたシーローンと、それに加担していると噂の王竜王国をスルーしてミリスに戻ってきた。
Just like that, those two left behind Shirone with its bloody civil war, ignored Ouryuu Kingdom with its complicit rumors, and returned to Milis.<Ref>Kingdom of Dragon King sounds awful, I replaced it with Ouryuu Kingdom which is the partially-untranslated name. I plan to use it from now on.</Ref>
　古巣に戻るかのように。
They came back to their old home.

　その後、タルハンドは思う所があって炭鉱族の里へと戻り、ギースは一人になった。

　ギースはぼやいたが、俺はなんとなくわかる。
Gisu was complaining, but somehow I understood.
　長い旅をしていると、ふと家族に会いたくなる気分になる時もあるだろうさ。
After such a long journey, it's normal to start missing your family and want to meet them.
　ホームシックってやつだ。
He's homesick.
　ナナホシの持病だな。
It's Nanahoshi's chronic disease.

「ギースは戻らないのか？」
"Gisu didn't want to go home?"
「俺が？　馬鹿言えよ。あんな辺鄙で何もねえ所に戻ったって、面白くもなんともねぇや」
"Me? That's stupid. There's nothing interesting at all about returning to such a remote place."

　そんなもんかね。
Is that so.
　俺はいつだって自分の家が恋しい。
I always miss my home.
　シルフィの触ると体力の回復する胸、ロキシーの触ると一定時間ラックの値が上昇する胸、エリスの触ると時間をスキップできる胸。すべてがあるのは家だけだ。
Just touching Sylphy's chest restores my strength, even Roxy's chest will rise to the occasion, and it feels like hours fly by with Eris. All under one roof.

「あの野郎も、自分の故郷には嫌な思い出があるみてぇなんだけどな」
"That bastard, even though there were so many unpleasant memories."
「じゃあ、その嫌な思い出を精算しにいったのかもしれませんよ」
"Well then, maybe he wanted to go fix some of those unpleasant memories."

　昔なにをしたとしても、年月が経過すれば、色々と変わってくる。
No matter what happened, if time passes, things change.
　１０代の時に絶対に許せなかったものが、２０代の時には許せるようになっていたり、５０代ぐらいになる頃には、どうでも良くなってたりするもんだ。
Even if something is unforgivable as a teenager, in the 20s it becomes something understandable, and in the 50s it doesn't even matter anymore.
　タルハンドも、心の方に一区切りついたから、何かを見直しにいったのかもしれない。

　ギースはタルハンドと別れた後、ここでまた冒険者として活動を始めたようだ。

However, he doesn't seem to be able to find any work.
　魔族だし、戦闘能力はないしで。
Well he's a demon race and has no combat ability.

「で、先輩はどうしてこっちに来たんだ？」
"So what is Senpai doing here?"
「母がこんな状態になったということで、実家の方から呼び出しを受けましてね。友人を送るついでに、顔を見せに」
"With mother in such a state, I received a summons from her parents' house. I took the opportunity to travel here with a friend, and make an appearance."
「へぇ……ゼニスん所の実家ねぇ……」
"Huh... Zenith's parents' place..."

　ギースは気の毒そうにゼニスを見た。

Although Zenith normally has a blank look, she seems to be in a good mood.

「……どういう風に聞いてるんですか？」
"... What have you heard?"
「詳しくは知らねぇ、お固い家って話だ」
"I don't know the details, but they say it's a stubborn house."

　ギースは肩をすくめた。
Gisu shrugged.
　その程度の情報は、来る前からわかっている。
Information like that, I heard it before coming.
　でも、行くしかないだろう。
But, there's no choice but to go.

「っと、もうすぐ区境か。悪いが、止めてくれ。魔族の俺が神聖区になんて入ったら、ひでぇ目にあっちまうからな」
"We're almost at the district's boundary. It's too bad, but I should get off here. If a demon race enters the religious district it'll cause trouble."

　ギースの言葉で、俺は馬車の動きを止めた。
At Gisu's word, I stopped the carriage.
　ギースはすぐさま、ひょいと馬車から飛び降りた。
Gisu immediately jumped down.

「んじゃ、しばらく滞在するってんなら、また会うこともあるだろ。達者でな、先輩」
"Well, it was short, but we should meet again sometime. Stay strong, Senpai!"

　ギースは手をヒラヒラとさせながら、路地へと歩いて……。
Gisu waved and walked into an alley...
　行こうとして、振り返った。
As he was leaving, he looked back.

「先輩！　一つ聞いてもいいか！？」
"Senpai! Would you listen to a request!?"
「なんですか？」
"What is it?"
「あの迷宮でパウロが言った言葉、覚えてるか？」
"What Paul said in the labyrinth, do you remember?"

　迷宮での言葉。
What he said in the labyrinth.
　心当たりは多かったが、心に残っている言葉はあった。
Even though a lot has happened, I still remember those words.
　おそらく、あれだろう。
Probably, it's that.

「はい」
"Yeah."

　そう言うと、ギースは満足そうにうなずき、踵を返した。
At that, Gisu nodded with satisfaction, and turned to leave.
　唐突に出会った知り合いは、唐突に去っていった。
A sudden meeting, and an abrupt departure.
　本当に偶然の再会だったのだろう。
It really was a chance reunion.

　しかし、偶然とはいえ、緊張してる所に知り合いに会えるというのは嬉しいものだ。
Even so, although it was by chance, it was nice to see a familiar face in such a tense atmosphere.
　そう思いつつ、俺は神聖区へと足を踏み入れた。

　クリフの家につく頃には、すでに日が落ちていた。
By the time we got to Cliff's house, the sun was already setting.
　クリフの家は、思った以上に普通の家だった。
Cliff's house was more ordinary than I expected.
　普通の一軒家、家族３人か４人で住むのにちょうど良さそうな、こじんまりとした家だ。
An ordinary single family home, it looks like it could fit a family of three or four, it's snug.
　隣の家と代わり映えしない。
It looks just like the neighboring house.
　というか、神聖区には、まったく同じ形をした家が並んでいる。
How should I put it, in the religious district, the houses are all uniform.
　教皇の家だというのでアリエル並のものを予想していたが、拍子抜けだ。
Because it's the Pope's house I expected something similar to Ariel's estate, it's kind of anticlimactic.

「意外と小さいんですね」
"It's unexpectedly small."
「教団本部に勤める聖職者は、みんなこの家を支給されるんだ。もっとも、祖父は本部の方にも部屋を持っているから、この家は使っていないがね」
"Housing for the clergy is provided by the religious headquarters. However, because grandfather has a room at the headquarters, this house isn't used."

　クリフは俺の失礼なつぶやきに腹をたてる事なく、説明してくれた。
Cliff explained to me, without getting angry at my rude comment.
　要するに、社宅というヤツだな。
To put it simply, it's like corporate housing.

「送ってくれて助かった。もう遅いし、泊まっていってくれ」
"Since we're already here... It's late, please stay."

　クリフの提案に、ふと俺は考えた。
At Cliff's suggestion, I suddenly had a thought.

　ゼニスの実家は、居住区にある。
Zenith's family home, it's in the residential area.
　てことは、今からだと少し時間がかかるか。

　あまり夜中に訪ねても迷惑な気がする。
Although I have a hunch they wouldn't want us visiting so late.
　旅装のまま訪ねるのも、あまり心象が良くないだろう。
Visiting in travel wear, that might not be a good idea.
　冒険者区の方で宿を取り、明日改めて訪問してもいいが……二度手間だな。
We could set up an appointment to visit them, but we'll be staying in the adventurers' district... so we'd have to come all the way back here.

「そうですね、お願いします」
"Well, thank you."

　俺はクリフの提案に乗る事にした。
I decided to accept Cliff's offer.
　荷物をおろし、馬を馬小屋に、馬車を倉庫に入れさせてもらっているうちに、残りのメンツが荷物を中へと運んでいく。
We unloaded the luggage, stabled the horses, stored the carriage, and brought everything inside.
　が、俺が馬車を操ろうとした瞬間、扉の中から白い煙のようなものがもわりと上がった。
But, while I was dealing with the carriage, I noticed a white cloud of dust.

「くしゅっ！」
"Gah!"<!--More weird sfx? Kushu? I think Gah is a good manly yell, but my sfx-skillz are weak.-->

　ツンとした匂いが鼻について、アイシャが可愛らしいくしゃみをもらした。
The dust had an acrid smell, Aisha let out a cute sneeze.

「けほっ……酷いな……爺さん、掃除してなかったらしい……」
"Keho... terrible... Jiisan, doesn't seem to have cleaned..."

　クリフは鼻のあたりを布で抑えながら、悪態をついた。
Cliff held a cloth over his nose, swearing.
　まだクリフが帰って来ないと思って放置していたのかもしれない。
He probably didn't expect Cliff to be back yet and left the house unattended.
　何にせよ、家の中は埃まみれのようだ。
In any case, the house is really dusty.

「泊めてもらうお礼ってわけじゃないですけど、掃除ぐらい手伝いますよ……アイシャが」
"To thank you for letting us stay here, we'll help you out with the cleaning... Aisha."
「ああ、すまな……え？」
"Ah, sor...ry?
「えっ、あたし？」
"Eh, me?"

　アイシャが素っ頓狂な声を上げ、ゼニスが非難がましい目を向けてきた。
Aisha said in disarray, and Zenith gave a reproachful look.
　いや、ゼニスは無表情だけどね。
No, but Zenith's expressionless.
　ただ、視線に意思を感じる。
However I can feel it in her eyes.

　アイシャもそんな目で見るなよ。
Aisha also gave me that kind of look.
　俺がお前一人に掃除を任せた事あったか？
Wasn't I supposed to entrust the cleaning to you?
　あったな。いつもだな。任せっきりだな。
Wasn't that it. Every time. Something like, [Leave it to me!]
　感謝してるよ……。
We have to express our gratitude...

「や、もちろん冗談ですよ？　俺も手伝います？」
"Of course it's a joke? I'll help too?"
「当たり前だ」
"Of course."

　夜の大掃除が始まった。
And so we began a night of housecleaning.

　窓を全開にして、風魔術でバッと大まかな埃を外に出した後、サッと箒ではく。
We fully opened all the windows, even with wind magic it was rough, so we finished up by sweeping.
　あとは、使う部屋だけを雑巾で水拭きだ。
After that, we wiped everything down.
　数年間使われていなかった事も考慮して、ベッドや毛布も熱風で殺虫しておいた。
Since nothing had been used in several years, I used hot air to clear any bugs out of the beds and blankets.

　台所なんかもかなり汚れていたようだが、アイシャが一人で何とかしてしまった。
The kitchen was also considerably dirty, but Aisha somehow managed it.
　ていうか、俺とクリフがリビングを片付けている間に、アイシャが使う部屋の大まかな掃除を全て終わらせてしまった。
Meanwhile, Cliff and I gave the living room a rough cleaning.
　通常の三倍のスピードで。
We finished in three times the normal speed.

　その後、旅の途中で余った食料を使って、軽い晩餐をした。
The, using the food leftover from the journey, we had a light dinner.

「クリフ先輩。ご帰還おめでとうございます」
"Cliff-senpai. Congratulations on your return."
「まだ早い。祖父に会うまでだよ」
"It's still too early. I have to meet with Grandfather.

　水で乾杯しつつ、干し肉とスープを食べる。
While toasting with cups of water, we enjoyed a meal of dried meat and soup.
　家の中での料理としては、少々味気ないが、こんなもんだろう。
As food goes, it's a little bland, but it's fine.
　食材を大量に余らせても困るし、使いきってしまおうという魂胆だ。
I was troubled over how many ingredients we had left, so I had an underlying motive to finish them.

「ルーデウス達は、明日はどうするんだ？」
"Rudeus, what are your plans for tomorrow?"
「ひとまず、ラトレイア家を訪問します」
"For the time being, I will visit the Latreia house."
「そっか、夜はそっちに泊まるのか？」
"I see, do you plan to stay there?"
「多分そうなると思います」
"I think that will probably happen."

　なんだかんだと評判は悪いが、一応はゼニスの実家だ。
Even if they have a bad reputation, they're Zenith's family.
　しばらく滞在させてもらっても、問題ないだろう。
Even if we stay for awhile, it shouldn't be a problem.
　傭兵団支部の設立準備に、クリフの様子見にとやるべき事が色々あるから、ラトレイア家に滞在していると少し自由には動きにくいかもしれないが……行ってみなきゃわからない。
For establishing the mercenary branch and assisting Cliff when the time comes, staying in the Latreia house may limit my freedom to act... but I won't know until I try.
　なんだったら、挨拶だけして、別の所に泊まってもいい。
Well, after the greetings, I could always stay somewhere else.

「じゃあ、誰か家事の出来るヤツを雇わないとな……」
"So, I'll need to hire someone to do the housework..."
「なんだったら、うちのアイシャを何日かに一度、派遣しましょうか？」
"If you'd like, every couple of days I could send Aisha over?"
「いや、いいよ。君たちだって忙しいだろうし、心当たりもあるからな」
"No, that's fine. You guys are going to be busy too, it's just something to think about."

　クリフは肩をすくめてそんな事を言っていた。
Cliff said with a shrug.

　寝るのに、俺達は客間を使わせてもらった。
We slept in the guest room.
　さして広くない部屋に三人。家族水入らず、川の字になって就寝。
Three people in a small room. The family, sleeping shoulder to shoulder like the 川 character.

　……と、思ったが、俺もアイシャも体はすっかり大人だ。
... And, Aisha's body is already that of an adult.
　ベッド自体も小さく、大人が三人も並んで眠れるスペースはない。
The bed is small, it can't fit three adults side by side.
　って事で、ベッドはゼニスにあげて、俺とアイシャは床で寝る事にした。
So we left the bed to Zenith, Aisha and I slept on the floor.

　クリフに借りた毛布とクッションで寝床を作る。
We made a makeshift bed out of blankets and cushions we borrowed from Cliff.
　床にはじゅうたんが敷かれているため、野宿に比べればなんてことはない。
Because there's carpet on the floor, it isn't exactly camping out.

　枕に頭を乗せて横になる。
It's time to go to sleep.
　すると、いつしか俺の目の前に寝床を作っていたアイシャと目があった。
Then, I noticed Aisha looking at me.

「えへへ、お兄ちゃんと同衾なんて、シルフィ姉に言ったら嫉妬されちゃうなぁ……」
"Ehehe, Oniichan, I wonder if Sylphy-ane would be jealous..."
「旅の途中では、結構あっただろ」
"Well, during our journey, it was fine right."
「うん。でもなんかね、えへへ」
Yeah, but somehow, ehehe..."

　アイシャは家の中で雑魚寝することが楽しいのか、にへらと笑った。
Aisha laughed and huddled next to me.
　可愛らしい笑みだ。
She has a cute smile.
　これがシルフィであったなら、なんとなくムラムラきて、そのまま抱き寄せただろう。
If it were Sylphy, I would already be past my limit.
　シルフィもそれとなく、俺の方に身を寄せてきただろうし。

「俺に仕えさせるとか、アレするとか、コレするとか、そういう事」
"To be a maid, and work for me, stuff like that."

　そう聞くと、アイシャはきょとんとした顔をした。
When I asked that, Aisha had a blank look.
　それから、ふと考えこむようにアゴに手を当てた。
Then, she put her hand on her chin and had a look like she was thinking intently.

「んー、別に嫌じゃないよ……でも、多分、シルフィ姉とかとは、なんかね、違うと思う。なんか……なんかってなんだろ……」
"Hmm, it's not disagreeable... but, perhaps, for Sylphy-ane, it's different. Something like this... I wonder if it's selfish..."
「いやわかるよ。そうだな、なんか違うよな」
"No, I understand. It's different."

　ファジーな会話だが、なんとなく通じる。
It was a fuzzy conversation, but something clicked.
　フィーリングが合っている感じだ。
It felt alright.

「んふふ、そゆとこわかってくれるから、お兄ちゃん大好きー」
"Nfufu, well it's a given, that Oniichan is loved."

　アイシャはそう言いつつ、ずりずりと俺の方によってきて、体を密着させてきた。
While saying that, Aisha curled next to me and pressed against my body.
　温くて柔らかい。
Warm and soft.
　いい抱きまくらだ。
A good holding pillow.

「……あたしもいつか、誰かを好きになって、子供とか産みたいって思うのかなぁ」
"... Someday, when you find someone you love, you can start a family of your own."

　感触を楽しんでいると、ふとアイシャが思いついたかのように言った。

It's hard to imagine it.

Aisha can choose who she wants, I don't like the idea of arranging a match.

Aisha normally hangs out with a certain crowd.
　傭兵団は……獣族が多いな。
The mercenaries... there are a lot from the Beast race.
　あんな野獣のような連中にアイシャが？
Would one of those guys fall for Aisha?
　どこの犬の骨ともわからんようなヤツに妹はやれんぞ！
My little sister isn't a bone for some dog to chase after!

　オルステッドあたりに聞けば、アイシャがどんな相手と結婚したのか知ることが出来るだろうが……。
If I ask Orsted, he should be able to tell me about the type of guy that Aisha marries...
　まあ、聞かないでおこう。
Now now, let's just forget about that.
　一生独身って聞いたら、なんか可哀想になってしまいそうだ。
If I heard something like she's single for the rest of her life, it would be pitiable.

　と、そうだ。
Oh, that's right.
　寝る前に確認しておこう。
I need to confirm something before going to sleep.

「アイシャ、明日、母さんを実家に連れて行くけど……お前はどうするんだ？」
"Aisha, tomorrow, when I bring Zenith to her parents' house... what do you want to do?"

　アイシャは俺の腕の中でもぞりと動いて、距離をとった。
Aisha slid away from my arm.
　元に位置に戻る。
But returned.

「行くよ。お母さんに、くれぐれもって頼まれたから」
"I will go. Okaasan, because she asked me to earnestly."
「そっか……」
"I see..."
「うん」
"Yeah."

　アイシャの心強い返事を聞いて、俺も安心した。
Hearing Aisha's reassuring reply, I was also relieved.
　明日はゼニスの家への訪問。

　アイシャの眠そうな声を聞きながら、俺はまぶたを閉じた。
While listening to Aisha's sleepy voice, I fell asleep.
