50. In the year 2019, a plague has transformed almost every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.
 51. In a world 10 years into the future, vampires make up the vast majority of the population with only 5% of the human race remaining. This presents particular challenges as the vampires' food supply - human blood - is dwindling and rationing is now the norm. There is growing evidence that vampires deprived of an adequate blood supply are themselves evolving into wild, vile creatures that attack anyone and anything in order to survive. Dr. Edward Dalton, a vampire and hematologist who works for a pharmaceutical firm, has been working on finding an artificial blood supply that will meet the vampire society's needs. He is sympathetic to humans and sees his work as a way of alleviating their suffering but his views on finding a solution change considerably when he meets someone who found a way to transform himself from being a vampire to again take human form.
 52. The Spiering Bros. present a film that has been in the can for a couple of years, well , the copyright was 2008 on the end credits. So, that being said, either lack of funding or faith, or both keep this film from a timely release.

In the year 2019 , Vampires rule the world, but now face a shortage of blood as humans are becoming scare. Even harvesting them has its' limits, and now the search for a synthetic alternative is desperately needed. Enter the corporation of Bromley-Marks, solely dedicated to the survival and proliferation of the Vampire race.

So, as it turns out, sucking your own blood is a no-no, with disastrous consequences. This is where the sub-vampire race literally survives, in the underworld, and even they are getting antsy for a new blood supply, so they seek the suburbs, this is a hilarious plot device.

Dr. Edward Dalton(Ethan Hawk) one of the leading hematologists assigned to find the cure for Bromley-Marks Corp., is a victim of his brother, now both vampires, and has no desire to find humans or harm them. Brother Frankie Dalton(Michael Dorman) , works in security as a finder of humans, and he does his job quite well.

Charles Bromley(Sam Neill) is the head corporate baddie, whose desire to find and promote the Vampire race overrides his fatherly devotions and places corporate profits at the top of his agenda.

Needless to say, Hawke literally runs into humans and they become close associates, in order to find a cure , and secure the human race from a Vampire feast.

The positives of the film are the fresh approach, good chase scene, interesting special effects, good acting. The negatives are an average script, that relies on shock value and ALLOT of blood, but doesn't trust itself enough to deliver the powerful impact that it should have. And there are the traditional conventional scenes, and some are repeated within minutes of each other.

Still it is worth viewing, especially on A big screen. Lionel "Elvis" Cormac( Willianm Defoe) plays the once human-once vampire-now human again, and has THE answer Hawke is looking for.

So, if you are looking for a multicultural Vampire film, then you might enjoy this one. I gave it 7 out of 10 for a decent effort, but the final punch, just not there. And yes, Michael Dormans eyelids flutter after he was partially consumed, drained of blood and left for dead. Interesting edit...
 53. The Australian-based Spierig Brothers have the distinction of writing and directing the second-best zombie comedy after "Shaun of the Dead" changed the genre for good. "Undead" did not illuminate movie screens in American but went straight to DVD and if you haven't seen it then you have missed quite a treat. The Brothers Spierig make their big-screen American theatrical debut with "Daybreakers," but they have forsaken giddy, outlandish comedy for straight-faced, humorless drama in this lukewarm vampire chiller with a unique premise but little payoff. Two-time Academy award nominee Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill star in this glossy, widescreen, futuristic epic. The Spierigs have made a traditional vampire movie where the fangsters cannot be seen in mirrors, and they have to restrict their comings and goings to after sundown or confine themselves to sheltered walkways or blacked out vehicles with video screens so the sunlight doesn't bake them. The title "Daybreakers" refers to what happens when vampires expose themselves to moderate amounts of light under controlled conditions.

The film opens on a downbeat note as a young girl who will never grow up leaves a suicide note and steps outside at sunrise to turn herself into ashes. Meanwhile, vampires have gained the upper hand in society and imprisoned the human populations to blood farms. If you go back and watch the revolutionary and far better Wesley Snipes thriller "Blade," the vampires have set-up blood farms where they milked humans, but they remained subservient to humans. In "Daybreakers," they dominate humans but they find themselves now in the precarious predicament where their supply of human blood has dwindled to dangerously low levels, perhaps a metaphor for the world's declining supply of oil. Some vampires, like our protagonist, Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke of "Dead Poets Society"), prefers to drink synthetic blood.

The Bromsley Marks Corporation employs Edward as its chief hematologist and he is struggling without luck to discover an artificial blood substitute that does not blow his vampire test subjects to smithereens. Unfortunately, the blood shortage is having severe effects on the fanged population. Some of these starving bloodsuckers are turning into what the authorities refer to as subsiders. In other words, they are reverting to their bat-like origins. They turn cavadaverously pale, lose their hair, sprout wings and hang from the ceiling. Just so this transformation does not evoke laughter, the Spierig brothers make these renegade vampires extremely violent as well as hideous looking. Indeed, the scene where a subsider breaks into Edward's residence is probably as scary as this anemic movie gets.

Although Edward is a vampire, we learn from his brother, Frankie Dalton (Michael Dorman of "Suburban Mayhem"), that Edward never wanted to be a vampire. Frankie serves in the cammo-clad vampire army that ruthlessly scours the earth for fresh humans. They resemble SWAT teams, cruise around in armored carriers with video cameras serving as their eyes and wear specially designed outfits to operate during the sunlight hours. Frank craves human blood and loves being a vampire. Indeed, Frankie transformed him into a vampire because his older brother wanted to die. Meanwhile, Edward sympathizes with the plight of the poor humans who are put into comatose states and drained of their blood.

One night during his drive home from work, Edward notices that his ears are being to change, an unmistakable sign that he has not partaken of human blood. While he is checking out his deformed ears, he crosses the yellow line on the highway and nearly collides with an on-coming vehicle. When he goes to check the SUV that he almost sideswiped, he is surprised to see that the passengers are humans armed with automatic crossbows. The driver, Audrey Bennett (Claudia Karvan of "Aquamarine"), is prepared to pull the trigger, but Edward convinces her and her companions that he does not represent a threat. The alerted Vampire Police careen to the scene of the accident to investigate. Edward persuades the humans to take refuge in his vehicle. While Edward sends the vampire cops on a wild goose chase, Audrey spots his ID tag and later introduces Edward to her friend about seeing a friend.

Lionel 'Elvis' Cormac (Willem Dafoe of "Spider-Man 3") tells Edward that he was once a vampire, but he was involved in a one-vehicle car crash and catapulted him through the windshield into the sunlight and plunged into a stream. The baptism of sunlight and water changed him back into a human. The Vampire Army are breathing down the necks of these human resistance fighters that take Edward into their hideout where he finds that the blood supply shortfall need not be the doom of his race. Despite several scenes where the Vampire Army ambushes humans smuggling themselves through the back woods at night or the Vampire Police round up the subsiders, "Daybreakers" has little time to develop the budding romance between Edward and Audrey.

Although Spierig Brothers are mining a fresh, different vein for vampire movies, "Daybreakers" rarely generates the same caliber of suspense, tension, and high-octane action scenes that the first two "Blade" movies created. Indeed, when the explosive crossbow arrows hit their mark on the Vampire Army, they vanish in bloody explosives, but there is no charisma here. Edward Dalton does not make a good action hero. In fact, Willem Dafoe steals every scene that he has with Ethan Hawke and he delivers the best lines of dialogue. As imaginative as "Daybreakers" is, this vampire chiller lacks hair-raising scenes, with the exception of the subsider scenes and an occasional bats shrieking out of nowhere. Altogether, "Daybreakers" seldom shines.
 54. Just when it seemed as if the vampire narrative had degenerated into terminal suckitude, along comes this gleefully gory little gem.
 55. In 2019, vampires rule, less than 5% of the human population remains (viz. a third of a billion people), and vampires are starving. Doctor Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke), vampire and hematologist, is desperately searching for a blood substitute, made particularly imperative because vampires deprived of human blood are devolving into "subsiders," bloodthirsty bat-like creatures who will feed on anything—human, vampire, or even themselves. Edward, who refuses to drink human blood, begins to make the transformation into a subsider. When he runs into a small group of humans led by Audrey Bennett (Claudia Karvan) and is introduced to Lionel "Elvis" Cormac (Willem Dafoe), an ex-vampire who has cured himself, Edward attempts the cure thinking that he can offer it to other vampires. Unfortunately, some vampires, such as Charles Bromley (Sam Neill), owner of Marks Blood Harvesting Pharmaceutical Company, don't share his vision. Daybreakers is based on an original screenplay by Australian brothers/directors Michael and Peter Spierig. This movie follows the traditional vampire attributes including vampire fangs, no reflection in mirrors, extreme photosensitivity to UV light, different looking eyes, a wooden stake to the heart and beheading to be killed, pale skin, low body temperature, immortality, and no heartbeat. In response to some of these non-human traits many cities have developed an elaborate system of underground walkways called "subwalks" allowing vampires to move about in the daylight. Also school, work, and other standard daytime businesses and activities now occur at night; public service announcements alert people of the approaching daylight; and cars may be modified to include, or be purchased with, blacked out windows and cameras allowing for daytime travel. Humans are also captured and kept restrained and unconscious by various companies who in turn sell their extracted blood for food. Due to critical shortages, much of the blood is mixed in limited amounts with other substances such as coffee. This suggests that while the vampires need blood to survive, they may take some nourishment or simply still enjoy the taste from normal food and beverages. The movie begins ten years after most of the population have already become vampires so the source of the disease is not a main plot point or even fully addressed. However a news story shown in passing at the beginning of the movie had the title/headline: "How a Single Bat Started It All." This suggests that the disease initially was one of an animal origin but quickly spread alongside vampires who were biting humans for sustenance. We also see large bats flying about during the daytime several times throughout the movie which is certainly out of the norm. This is a sign that the disease remains in bats and has affected them in various ways as well; such as larger size, more aggressive behavior, etc. As far as how it was possible that most people became vampires, the disease must have occurred in such a rapid pace that the military and medical communities were unable to contain it. It is mentioned that as humans became the minority they were offered the choice to convert, but those who refused to do so were forced into hiding. It requires being subjected to sunlight for a short period of time. In Elvis' case, he was ejected from a car, tossed through the sunlight, and landed in the water. The short exposure, coupled with the rapid cooling, apparently cured Elvis of his vampirism. In Edward's case, he stands in a wine fermentation tank and is exposed to sunlight while wearing robes soaked in water. Later in the movie, it's discovered that feeding on a former vampire is also a cure for vampirism. Having discovered that feeding on a former vampire is another cure for vampirism, Edward gives himself up to Charles...with a plan. He goads Charles into turning him back into a vampire. When Charles drinks Ed's blood, he is turned back into human but not before he summons the vampire patrol. Before the patrol arrive, Ed ties Charles to a chair and seats him in the elevator. When the patrol arrives, out of desperate hunger, they leap on Charles and start feeding. Meanwhile, Ed rescues Audrey, and they rejoin Elvis and Ed's brother Frankie (Michael Dorman). Before they can get away, however, they are surrounded by a large vampire patrol. Frankie orders Ed to run, while he stays behind and allows the vampires to feed on him. When those vampires turn human, more vampires move in to feed on them, until only humans are left. Suddenly, Chris (Vince Colosimo) appears and machine guns all the remaining humans. "There can't be a cure," he tells Ed. Before Chris can kill Ed, however, Elvis shoots a crossbow through his heart, and Chris explodes. In the final scene, Elvis, Ed, and Audrey speed off in Elvis' car. In a voiceover, Ed says, "We have a cure. We can change you back. It's not too late." a5c7b9f00b
