the genres are arranged up to down with the first ones being the easiest to listen to as an entry level metal head and lower ones being much more difficult to digest and for big metal fans



HEAVY METAL
traditional, midpaced, blues influenced; takes it's main sound from traditional western music and British interpreted blues rock
mostly the genre of choice for early metal bands, many still are keeping this particular genre alive to this day
far from what we know in the modern music scene as 'hardcore' or 'brutal' metal music, it originated in early 70's and exploded in popularity by early to mid 80's

POWER METAL
melodic, upbeat, fast; power metal (or epic metal, symphonic metal, etc) uses symphonic textures and relies on medieval and other classical western music styles as its base
originated in central Europe; as metal exploded in England and eventually the US the wave of metal in Europe was very different and mixed with traditional music differing by nation

FOLK/PAGAN METAL
diverse, mystical, folkloric; primary sound is based on traditional folk music while under playing the guitar in a western classical way for using classic instruments/symphonies instead
opposed to power metal it has more build ups and is less oriented on riffs instead relying on application of scales as the main source of melody around the traditional metal sound
associated with the European pagan movement representing distintive cultures; primarily only in Europe as it originated around early 90's and peaked late 2000's

DOOM/SLUDGE METAL
traditional, slow, depressing, heavy, negative; is actually one of the first genre's of metal that came from the 70's and largely from the sounds of Black Sabbath
pushes riffs and atmospheric qualities mostly and is usually interlaced with distorted and somewhat scratchy recording qualities; vocals range from clear to screams to muffled singing
originated early 70's lacking a proper label, now in the modern metal scene it is clearly defined as a subgenre; got popular in late 80's and became widespread by mid 90's

technical, experimental, intricate, forward-thinking; has progressive elements applied to metal such as odd time signatures, experimental sounds, untraditional instruments and composition
progressive can be a very broad term in use with music genres; many groups sound different from one another, but the progressive root to make new sounds puts them in this category
generally started to emerge and be recognized early 90's reaching the height of fame between mid to late 2000's

Is associated with creating the modern 'heavier' or 'brutal' metal music we know today, as it was the starting point for death metal and so on

harsh, melodic, emotional, fast, approachable; incorporates death metal and power metal and is associated with the same scene folk/black metal had in the European nations it developed in
can be fast, riff oriented, dark, and also have well composed riffs and melodies as well as drop offs that turn soft before turning into brutal screaming heavy chord metal
highly recommended to get into this before trying to get into black metal as the latter is similar but more harsh and atmospheric; emerged mid 90's in Europe and peaks mid to late 2000's

not easy to access for those barely getting into metal; if death metal doesn't appeal to you try listening to thrash, melodic death metal, and work your way up to heavier genres

fast, evil, lo-fi, atmospheric, harsh; is often associated with European pagan movements, right wing white nationalist movements in Europe, and on a much lesser level satanic communities
subset of death metal with power metal compositions, focused on waves of sounds and very harsh lyrics/singing, unclear recording quality, and heavy sets of chord and melodic progressions
is NOT an easy genre to get into, even death metal fans may be very disagreeable with this sound, and sometimes due to its content as it can be (but isn't always) pro white supremacy

honestly, nearly every band in this genre sounds the same, not as important to listen to as the other genres but is somewhat noticeable as a starting point for full scream metal subgenre's
grindcore emerged late 90's to early 2000's from the hardcore metal and punk scene, most songs are less than 2 mins to less than 1 min long and yes all of them sound like that
