Maxi jumped straight up into the air. When she saw what was behind her, she jumped a second time, but it was only a statue of Lizzie Borden, the famous ax murderess, gazing at her with painted eyes. The statue held an ax above her head. So Maxi must've just imagined that she heard the statue whisp---

The statue blinked. Maxi backed away, terrified all over again. Selena tried to grab her as she went by, but she pulled free. Maybe Selena was right. Maybe Maxi was going crazy. It didn't matter to her. All she knew was that she had to get away from the statue of Lizzie Borden.
