Label: Mosaic | 5% recovery record | Remastered originals | Jazz, mainstream jazz

This superb seven-CD set draws its material from the period 1950-1965, when Rich, before creating his own big band, led short-lived bebop big bands, a variety of combos, toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic, recorded with all-star groups, and had stints with the orchestras of Dorsey and Harry James. As most Mosaic releases, it is highly recommended for all the fans of the remarkable drummer.

Buddy Rich was, among many other things, the quintessential big-band drummer: As he proved on countless bandstands over a half-century career, he could kick-start a horn section with pitch-perfect brawn and brio. But Rich also led plenty of small and midsize combos over the years. This box set chronicles a handful of them, from 1953 to 1961, and makes the case for Rich as a galvanizing drummer in any setting, as well as a gifted, if limited, ensemble leader.

JazzTimes Review

Buddy Rich, the most remarkable drummer to ever play jazz, can easily have his career divided into three. During 1937-1945 he was a notable sideman with big bands including those of Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, and Tommy Dorsey. In 1966 he formed his own successful orchestra that capitulated him to his greatest fame. During the 20 years in between, Rich led short-lived bebop big bands, a variety of combos, toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic, recorded with all-star groups, and had stints with the orchestras of Dorsey and Harry James. This seven-CD set draws its material from Rich's second period and it can also be divided into two.
