- TOEFL has four parts:
- 1 reading: 3 or 4 academic texts, each followed by 13-15 multiple choice questions, 20 minutes for each text
- 2 listening: 6 or 9 audio passages (2 or 3 sets of three), each followed by 5-7 multiple choice questions, it will take about 10 minutes to complete each passage (each set of three passages gives you 10 minutes to choose the answers)
- - 10-minute break
- 3 speaking: 6 tasks, the total time will be about 20 minutes
- 1 independent prompt: 15 seconds to prepare, 45 seconds to speak
- 2 independent prompt: 15 seconds to prepare, 45 seconds to speak
- 3 reading/listening/speaking (conversation about a campus announcement): 30s, 60s
- 4 reading/listening/speaking (text and lecture about an academic topic): 30/60
- 5 listening/speaking (conversation about a student’s problem): 20/60
- 6 listening/speaking (lecture or discussion about an academic topic): 20/60
- 4 writing: 2 tasks, the total time will be about 1 hour
- 1 integrated listening/speaking/writing: 20 minutes to explain how a lecture you heard supports or contradicts a text that you read
- 2 independent writing: 30 minutes to write your thoughts about a prompt (either agree/disagree with a statement, or choose between two positions)
- ---
- For speaking and writing, content and organization are usually more important than fluency and accuracy.
- ---
- Homework: complete the sample reading section (give yourself 20 minutes for each of the three passages)
