  1. Well, the problem is that now that we're "free" from foreign powers, Hungary is cursed to re-live and re-battle the same ideological quarrels that we failed to resolve after Trianon.
  2. We're completely split on ideological grounds both along political and cultural lines.
  3.
  4. There is also the fact that schools are understaffed because nobody wants to be a teacher. This is especially true for informatics and science subjects. Why study 5 years at a university to earn close to minimum wage when you can earn triple that in the private sector?
  5. It's getting so bad, that the new curriculum will mash together Biology, Chemistry and Physics into a single subject called "Natural Sciences" to ease the burden of the labour force shortage.
  6.
  7. This is the smaller issue. The bigger one that made people freak out is how they handled History and Literature.
  8. For example, look at the new goals they set for our history curriculum:
  9. >1. (The goal of history education is) for the student to learn the basics about the past of the Hungarians, of the Hungarian nation, of Hungary, of European Civilisation and of humanity's history;
  10. >2. To build a strong Hungarian identity through the learned information, so as to make the Hungarians a natural reference point;
  11. >3. To be able to use the common cultural code's most important elements (symbols, historical figures, stories, expressions and works of art.)
  12. In addition, in 12th grade, there will be a mandatory "Citizen-studies" class that aims at "fostering patriotic feelings and teaching national defence"
  13.
  14. With literature, the problem is a bit more overt. To simply put it, contemporary and late 20th century stuff is mostly off the table.
  15. They instead introduced "patriotic" and "national" writers into the curriculum. (In reality, actual and crypto-fascists.)
  16. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences warned the government that this will lead to "unforeseen levels of distortion" in a short span of time, and it's not in line with the way our current literary tradition is evolving.
  17. In essence, it's trying to "rectify the past" as if it were the present. Okay, these writers were excluded often not only because of their mediocrity, but for ideological reasons too, but even then, it's been 60-70 years now, and there is no way you'll reintroduce them effectively, since the canon evolved without their influence.
  18. They're not part of the great dialogue, and you can't retrospectively force them to be the part of it.
  19.
  20. Nobody is happy with the new curriculum. Not the teachers, the literary community, the university teachers or the Academy of Sciences.
  21. Funny thing is, the government made this internally without any help from the Academy of Sciences or the teachers. We don't even know the name of the authors.
