  75. PERSONALITY
  76.
  77. Personality: Richard can often be a dick, like his name. One way he displays this dickish behavior is his tendency to be a sore loser. While his mother and stepfather tried to teach it out of him, there are still some parts of him that whisper he deserves better. ‘This isn’t fair, I worked hard for this accomplishment, I should have won’ his brain might cry at the end of a game where he lost, pettily flipping a table or taking his frustration out on something else inanimate. Richard also can be an extreme perfectionist. Things that are not perfect according to his standards on the first try are sometimes smashed or scrapped immediately, or the practice left entirely after a failed first try. For reasons where his spouse wasn’t a manipulative person and a user, he’s been divorced partly because of his outdated and stubborn ways, and other behaviors due to his condition (such as being a sore loser, and taking his anger out on inanimate objects, being seen as a potential threat or bad influence to the children). This separation opened his eyes to it somewhat, though he focuses most of the blame in this area on his outdated style. She also left partly because of his smoking habits and addiction to nicotine.
  78. He’s usually on the boisterous side when socializing, and was a real frat boy back in college, not afraid to mix up a party with crazy super soldier stunts. That was at least until he was indexed early on in his continued education.
  79. He’s got a real chip on his shoulder for a number of things, including but not limited to: how society sees him and his immediate family, the sense of being a mistake compared to his brother, not growing up related to both of the active parents in his immediate family while his brother was, feeling like his whole life was a lie, and feeling like his best has never been good enough for anyone despite his enhancements. He’s prone to being snappish around these subjects or anything that ties to them, which would be many subjects, so this goes back to Richard being a dick. Even still, he can become very humble when he’s scared of hurting people with his powers, or if he’s exposed to something like one of Steve’s inspirational moments.
  80. Richard is a huge modern trend follower. His style is very stuck in the seventies, although he’s recently been trying to update his look without losing the 70s aesthetic completely. He was in Elementary school by the end of the seventies, watching cartoons every morning with his name brand sugary carbs and milk, but likes to dress like he was an adult then in the present. He yearns for a time when things were easy, and it was just him and his mom, before SHIELD ever checked in on them like they did something wrong, or the Accords after it. He’s constantly haunted by the subtle, remaining feeling that 'if Captain America is my father, shouldn't I be doing more with my life?’, even after the fall of the Triskelion with the massive SHIELD info dump, resulting in him and Claudia knowing who the real father is now.
  81.
  82. Likes: Vaping (it helps his smoking addiction a little, and anyone who has to stand around him), Instagram (gotta flex and has those nice, vintage filters), skiing, Fishing, seeing his kids, spending time with his ex (even if it didn’t work out, and she’s prone to using him), brisk water (hydration, the only Hydra anything he likes)
  83.
  84. Dislikes: HYDRA, SHIELD, his biological father, failing on the first try, feeling inadequate in any way, being compared negatively to his fathers or Steve, talking about his family issues, leaving things incomplete, untidiness, his mounting financial obligations (mortgage, property tax, alimony, child support, still paying off the rest of his college tuition that wasn’t paid by scholarship)
  85.
  86. Fears/phobias: Failure to live up to the standards of (his previously perceived biological father) Steve Rogers, being too rough with someone and hurting/killing them with his strength, stooping to the level of badness that he thinks his actual biological father is at, never being able to see his kids again, natural disasters, his kids hating him or seeing him as sub-par, drowning financially
  87.

  190. James Barnes and HYDRA
  191. For most of his life, nearly all of it, Richard’s mother told him that Steve Rogers was his father by proxy. Aside from this being leverage used against him so that Dick wouldn’t be an overpowered bully expecting the world to hand him everything, this meant he would forever need to hold himself to the same standard of his supposed father. He watched, read, studied everything he could about Captain America, and everything he could on the man behind the shield. He read up on just how terrible HYDRA was in its day, and their crazed leader’s quest for world domination and total power. When the Triskelion and Helicarriers fell, and SHIELD’s information was dumped, as well as the identity of the Winter Soldier coming out, there was a very long and emotional talk between Dick and his mother. The fact that his real father had been a HYDRA assassin after all this time, after being held silently to Steve’s standard for decades, it didn’t go over well with him. The fact that his mother slept with what he thought is a nazi because he was cute at the time, but he never even visited or told them they were doing a good job, it snapped something in Dick. This man had been alive when the world thought he was dead for decades, and he’d become a traitor to work with these horrible people, murdering so many innocents to further HYDRA’s cause. He’s been angry ever since these revelations, and has vowed to try and live up to Steve’s standard out of spite now. He’d take out any HYDRA operatives he could find. As far as he knew, that included his own father.
  192.
  193. SHIELD and Phil Coulson
  194. At the age of 19, and early on in his College education, SHIELD stopped by to visit Richard and formally put him on the index. It was a right of passage, they said, never mind this never happened to anyone normal. His mother had been on the list for years, and now she couldn’t keep him off of it any longer, being a legal adult now. The agent tasked with indexing Dick was pretty full of himself, so sure that he and SHIELD were in the right about tagging anyone with powers, like they were a liability by default. That knowing everything about their personal lives for being different, and being told what he could and couldn’t do with himself was for everyone’s safety. That this secret organization that monitors everything cares and knows what was best for him. He wouldn't have been be surprised at the time, if it was SHIELD that was trying to raise an army of supersoldiers, and was lying about other people with different powers. This agent acted so much like being the son of Steve Rogers was such an honor at the time, chiding him and acting jealous for Dick having problems with this ‘privilege’. That Dick should know just how many people would give their left arm to be that close to Captain America. It really set the stage for Richard’s feelings towards the organization as a whole. The agent was a young Phil Coulson.
  195. He felt some vilification and relief when HYDRA came out and SHIELD fell, amongst the awful realization that his real father was murdering people on tv. He felt more resentment after about the fact that HYDRA basically took all of his and his mother’s personal information, coupled with the question of ‘what were they really doing with all of that info anyway?’
  196. When SHIELD was reinstated as a legitimate organization, he refused to believe they were a new group, and that it wasn’t still HYDRA trying to wear the same disguise. He didn’t care who their new director was, if he saw SHIELD elbowing their way into a situation, he swore to make sure they didn’t get whatever they wanted.
  197.
  198. BACKSTORY
  199.
  200. Why Richard Exists:
  201. In January of 1973, James Barnes had managed to overpower guards assigned to watch him while he was out of cryo, and not actively on a mission. He had broken free of his Winter Soldier programming quietly enough to turn on HYDRA operatives without warning, and fled their current base of operations in the DC underground. He soon went missing for six months.
  202.
  203. Quickly fleeing the general area of Washington DC soon after, not wasting time before any search parties could spread out to retrieve their asset, he stuck to less-traveled paths heading north, at least until he hit I-83. From there, he walked rather than hitchhiked all the way up to Harrisburg, changing up his general direction for safety’s sake, and eventually followed I-78 eastward to a small town named Allentown, Pennsylvania. This took about a month and a half to reach this town on foot, with him trying to live a low-key drifting style, and neither wanting to hang around or catch anyone’s attention for too long.
  204. In the meantime, James was still trying to adjust to, and get a grasp of the new and different time he was in. This was true for technology, local customs, and his place in the world alike.
  205.
  206. While he was spending a couple nights in Allentown, he met a charming gal at a club, who went by Claudia Hemingway. Clubs were one place he was drawn to strangely despite trying to lay low, his previous love for social life and dancing creeping back to the surface of his mind. This dancing joint of the future stirred something in him, an experience he’s still revisited, even after the fall of the triskelion.
  207. Claudia was loose as hell with everyone. While James noticed her, and saw platonic company for the evening, all she spied was another one-night stand. This wasn’t more apparent to him until they were leaving the club, and soon found themselves in a cheap motel. She wasn’t saying good night here, and beckoning him to come along with increasingly forward and flirtatious behavior. He couldn’t say no, having little concept of speaking out against something fishy at this point in his freedom, and so he gave in and followed. He was confused about having sex with whoever, and whenever when she offered, but he was quickly assured that this was a normal practice for everyone cool these days. Her reasoning to him was that such intimacy at first sight was completely the norm, that it was no big deal to hop on whoever said yes. She found him odd, thinking him the only ‘straight’ guy she’d seen that hadn’t torn her clothes off by that point, yet he didn’t exactly come off as the type to be a virgin either.
  208. James still being fairly used to Hydra conditioning, and presuming so much was silently mandatory, he would have interpreted this as something he was supposed to do. In the end, their mutual lack of understanding the full situation left no one at blame. Such is life, sometimes.
  209.
  210.
  211. What James didn't expect, was for her to be gone when he woke up. Nothing was missing or added besides her, but the old standards he grew up with regarding courtship came bubbling back to the surface, as mostly unplaceable and incommunicable nagging sensations. This left him feeling betrayed, full of regret, subconsciously expecting Claudia to stay after something so intimate they had together. Despite these feelings, he had to keep moving. To carry on with his life from there, and try to keep himself from being recaptured by Hydra. Something that was unfortunately temporary.
  212.
  213.
  214. Claudia might have gotten her pleasure for the evening, but it didn’t come without a permanent cost. Not only did the one-night stand land her pregnant, but with a child who was positive for super soldier serum genes. These genes had programming in them, that kept producing serum after any initial injections, causing the fetus-mother fluid exchange to affect her as the child developed. Claudia experienced slight physical mutations as the serum became part of her body, a side effect as she gained every other enhancement offered to a super soldier. Any diseases she'd had previously were attacked relentlessly by the upgraded immune system, leaving a body that was fresh and new on multiple levels.
  215. While this lack of ailments gave her looseness a renewed energy after recovering from having Richard, she had no outlet for healthily dealing with these confusing, terrifying new problems she faced. Who was that man with the metal arm, and what did he do to her? Was it permanent? Were these mutations going to get worse, like the horror movies they showed about radiation? She couldn’t talk to anyone about this because they would fear her, right? How was she going to take care of this kid she was left with, and was he affected by this? Who was this SHIELD showing up at her doorstep?
  216.
  217. Describe their childhood (newborn - age 10):
  218. Household: A cheap two-bedroom house that had been converted from a trailer home, until Claudia got married and they both moved into a larger ranch-style home with Brendan.
  219.
  220. Family: Claudia Hemingway (then married as Walker), Brendan Walker, Victor Walker
  221.
  222. Friends: A few friends from School, named Kyu Bong Yun, Philip Sims, and Roy Dailey
  223.
  224. Hobbies: Watching his favorite Saturday morning cartoons with his breakfast, reading DC comics, hiking near his house when he was older in this stage of life
  225.
  226. Interests/likes: Dinosaurs, fast cars, nature, Superman, kid science kits, building-type toys and action figures, diy candy kits
  227.
  228. Education and/or occupation: Early life lessons from mother, kindergarden, and then Elementary
  229.
  230. Major events, memorable moments, character growth moments, and turning points:
  231. Claudia had kept up her habits at first, after getting her figure back, until around when Richard was four. One particularly violent and aggressive guy had come home with her for the night, hitting her and breaking a lamp, after she disagreed with how quickly he wanted to jump into anything intimate. It was only by the strength given her from the serum, was she able to kick him back out - at least before his aggression turned on something besides her bedroom, or herself. This ruined evening made her reconsider her life choices; How this continued lifestyle of hers might affect the life of, and her relationship with her son, wondering if the situation could have gone much worse, and how. Richard heard more than he saw, but was upset by the encounter all the same. He never liked the men mommy brought home, all different and not his daddy every night. She didn’t use motels as much as she used to because her son was young, but he hated leaving his room after it got dark out because of all the nights she’d bring someone random home.
  232.
  233. Claudia eventually married and stayed with Victor’s father for stability and romantic reasons. Richard was jealous of Victor the first year after he was born, but they’ve been extremely close ever since.
  234.
  235. Richard himself had shown signs of being positive for the serum, ever since he was born. From the get go, he showed more muscle control than any infant or child his age, a far accelerated rate of learning and understanding the world around him, and an energy that couldn’t be satisfied by others. There was enhanced strength and speed, though it was never as prominent until his teens. This posed as a potential problem to other kids around him aside from his brother, so Claudia worked closely with Brendan and Geraldine to try and humble him as much as they could. One of the most effective methods they were able to use, was establishing Steve Rogers and Superman as idols.
  236. Kal El could relate with an ability set that seemed isolatingly unique, and taught the importance of being gentle and humble with everyone ordinary around him (a man in a world of cardboard). That his powers didn’t raise him above them, his powers made him an example of what they could be. Steve taught him through the media interpretations all the values of freedom, justice, the American way, and fighting for those who can't stand up for themselves. After an in-depth conversation between Claudia, Brendan, and Geraldine about her history, Richard was stressed the importance of having him as an idol and how he may have related to Dick.
  237.
  238. He was fed the story that it was Steve Rogers who was his father, since Brendan and Geraldine made the presumption that Claudia was knocked up by a government agent, actually trying to restart the super soldier project by other means.
  239.
  240. Describe their teenage years (11 - 19):
  241. Household: A lower-middle-class, two-bedroom, single story ranch-style home with a garage, basement, and a shed out back
  242.
  243. Family: Claudia Walker, Brendan Walker, Victor Walker, sometimes Aunt Geraldine
  244.
  245. Friends: His older school friends Kyu Bong Yun, Philip Sims, and Roy Dailey, plus Shannon Phillips and Carmen Lazaro
  246.
  247. Hobbies: Fishing, hitting the gym, reading DC comics, studying everything the media showed about Captain America (and eventually Steve Rogers), over studying for school, ?
  248.
  249. Interests/likes: Fishing, hitting the gym, hiking, nature
  250.
  251. Education and/or occupation: Completed middle school and high school. He started taking different odd jobs after school and over the summer starting at 16, and went to college right after high school graduation on a Presidential scholarship.
  252.
  253. Major events, memorable moments, character growth moments, and turning points:
  254. When Richard started middle school, his strength had become far more apparent than before. While Superman and Captain America were brought into his life, to help teach him how to be good to others with his strength, he was still a child that needed to learn how his limitations and strengths were different from others. This was a terrible combination, when coupled with the fact that he had an aggressive desire to win, and one day ended with him losing his temper with a peer. What was intended to be a single punch in frustration, landed the other kid in the hospital for two weeks. Horrified at what he had done, he became extremely reserved for two years in his school, especially avoiding the other kid after giving his apologies in a card and a gift for the kid to the nurse watching him.
  255.
  256. This incident was soon pointed out to SHIELD, quickly leading to two agents knocking on the door of the Walker-Hemingway residence. The agents wanted to index the kid and mark him as a potential threat, and Claudia had to work hard to make her case, that Richard was just a child still learning and trying to understand himself. These agents reluctantly held off from indexing Dick for now, but promised frequent visits from here on out, and that refusing the Index by adulthood would have… Consequences.
  257.
  258. In his home life, Geraldine had another idea. Over the summers, and very early on weekends that didn’t have much homework that needed finishing, she would take Richard and Victor out to fish. He hated it at first because he couldn’t throw right, and he didn’t know if anything he did was going to succeed. Geraldine agreed that sometimes catching fish some days just wasn’t meant to be, but no one knows that before they start. That they wouldn’t catch fish anyway if they didn’t try. That one had to have patience and see it through, before any judgement could be made. She did everything to teach the boys all she knew about fishing, gauging the terrain and what kinds of lures and bait would be ideal, what kinds of setups and throw styles would scare fish away the least. With Dick already having a fascination with nature, it was easy for him to pick up on learning about different freshwater and saltwater fish, and he kept a journal with pictures as a reminder to himself about what he needed to use. It became a zen hobby after a while, him taking it up more when outside forces, or his own impatience and quirks became too stressful.
  259.
  260. Richard eventually began to open up again, when his old friends convinced him that he could surely become popular with other people. That they still liked him for a reason. While he was chummy with a number of groups from then on, the only two new real friends he made were Shannon and Carmen.
  261.
  262. After months of studying when the importance of certain tests were stressed in his classes, Richard got a Presidential scholarship to help fund his college education, after scoring very high on his SAT. While he was already a perfectionist with his grades, the satisfaction and glee he felt from this result caused him to move onto college studies at the first opportunity.
  263.
  264. Keeping their promise from years ago, SHIELD visited Richard again to index him. His encounter with a young Phil Coulson only added to his mounting stresses, and the idea that the world expected a certain level of quality out of him, that he had to be a certain level of successful. It helped even less, when rules about what he could and couldn’t do were stressed to him. This removed more ways for him to blow off steam, and he silently loathed it. Because Dick couldn’t use his powers at all hardly, the party tricks died down and had to stop, unless his bros could promise that word about the tricks wouldn’t go anywhere. Especially not to anyone calling themselves SHIELD.
  265.
  266. Describe their early adult years (20 - 39):
  267. Household: A shared college dormitory until he graduated from Bryn Athyn, then a single-bedroom/kitchen/livingroom apartment until he grew close with Shirley and got hitched. Ended up mortgaging a one-story split level, two-bedroom modern colonial house with an attic, garage, and a basement.

  278.
  279. Major events, memorable moments, character growth moments, and turning points:
  280. He graduated from College with a Bachelor’s in a double-major degree, after many years of hard work and studying, and found a small apartment for himself. He liked it because it was so very low rent, so he could focus most of his non-bill-paying income on paying off his tuition.
  281.
  282. He took up several jobs that paid after graduation, trying to dip his toe in careers such as nursing, working as a mall cop, a bouncer, and . On the side, he was simultaneously hopping from internship to internship for different labs and research groups, while working his regular jobs one at a time. Nothing really seemed to click with him, much to his frustration. He eventually got a job at one of the docks by the city, working as a longshoreman. It wasn’t exactly his true calling to simply be a grunt, hauling heavy loads faster than the other guys, but it had a perk. Pay wasn’t one of them, but there was a lady that worked as a bartender nearby who noticed him when she was off work, and the early morning water provided a nice spot for him to practice his old zen hobby.
  283.
  284. The bartender that always worked near PhilaPort was named Shirley, and had started to visit fairly frequently whenever he’d fish in the morning, after a few weeks of him working in the area. She suggested he come by her workplace once in a while, playing up how it would benefit both of them when he told her he couldn’t get drunk. He’d fish before his shift started, work much of the day, and then hang around at the bar in the evening. The rowdy and predatorial guys hanging around it were cleared out easily by him, and he found himself growing very close with Shirley over the course of that year and a half.
  285.
  286. Things eventually got serious, and they were engaged soon after. After getting the blessing of both families, Richard and Shirley got married and found a house big enough for them and their future together. They needed to take out a mortgage on it, especially with Richard still paying off the rest of his tuition, but they figured they could handle it all with both of them working. Shirley had Lindsey about two years later, and after very long, in-depth discussions about what having kids would mean, and Chad was born three years after that. Slight mutations happened, but Shirley had made it clear in advance that she’d be okay with this trade-off. As long as it didn’t make her vile to look at, but then that’s what surgery was for.
  287.
  288. At some point after when Steve was thawed and public, Richard would have reached out to him, and would have been met with initial confusion.
  289.
  290. Describe their middle adult years (40 - 59):
  291. Household: The one-story split level, two-bedroom modern colonial house with an attic, garage, and basement that he’s still trying to pay the mortgage for.

  298.
  299. Interests/likes: Vaping, Instagram, skiing, Fishing, seeing his kids, spending time with his ex, brisk water
  300.
  301. Education and/or occupation: Longshoreman at Philaport, and now getting back into education despite his tuition loans from before, taking Culinary Arts to fend for himself better (at home and in the job market)
  302.
  303. Major events, memorable moments, character growth moments, and turning points:
  304. The attacks in DC, the fall of the Triskelion, and the massive SHIELD info dump all happened. He and Claudia know now that Steve isn’t related. Richard made a point to himself to never be like what he thought his actual biological father was.
  305.
  306. Being typical law-abiding citizens, Richard and his mother decided to register under the accords. Knowing so much about Steve Rogers, thinking for so long that he was the father, he didn’t understand Steve’s protection of a well known Hydra agent (at least in the public’s view).
  307.
  308. Shirley pushes for and succeeds in getting a divorce from Richard. He kept their family home, but Shirley took the kids. She asks for Alimony and child support, despite both parents working. This demand gives Richard financial strain, between what his job can offer, and him trying to keep up the now too-large house his kids grew up in.
