  24. Writing Section: fourth and final section, about 60 minutes total, 2 tasks
  25. 1 integrated: read 3 minutes, listen to a lecture, 20 minutes to write about how the points from the lecture relate to the points from the reading
  26. 2 independent: read a choice-question prompt, 30 minutes to prepare, write, and revise your response
  27. ---
  28. There are two common types of choice-question prompt for independent writing:
  29. - agree / disagree: “Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?”
  30. - some people / other people: “Some people think… Others prefer… Which do you agree with?”
  31. ---
  32. “Some people think that scientists make the most important contributions to society. Other people think the contributions of artists are the most important. Which position do you agree with? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.”
  33. ---
  34. - The first thing you should do is brainstorm some possible reasons to support each choice. Also think of possible details and examples to support those reasons.
  35. - Choose the option that you can support best.
  36. - Outline a response that supports that opinion (choose the two or three best reasons and note some supporting examples for each reason)
  37. ---
  38. - Write your thesis statement (your opinion) and a basic lead-in.
  39. - Take 5 minutes to write each body paragraph.
  40. - Write a concluding sentence.
  41. - Add to the introduction, complete the ideas in the body paragraphs, write more of a conclusion.
  42. - Make corrections to what you’ve written.
  43. ---
  44. Each body paragraph has three “jobs”:
  45. - State your main point/reason.
  46. - Show that your reason is true.
  47. - Show that your reason supports your thesis.
  48. ---
