  1. Shonen Jump X Nintendo is a turn-based strategy role-playing game similar to titles from the Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics series. Players take control of various characters from manga properties of Weekly Shonen Jump and video game properties of Nintendo. Gameplay is divided into levels which the player unlocks as he or she progresses through the game's story. Each level is split between story segments told through character interactions and gameplay in which characters, known as "units," from both the player party and the enemy party partake in battle. Battles take place on a grid-based map shown from an overhead perspective. Players can have his or her own units move around this map, interact with objects on the field such as treasure chests, use obtained items with various benefits, and engage encountered enemies in action role-playing battle sequences. Playable characters appear as pair units, which consist of two characters, and solo units, which consist of one character. Units take turns moving around this map and performing actions until the player’s win or loss conditions for the level are met. Movement and unique actions are determined through the units' respective number of Ability Points (AP). Each unit is assigned a set amount of AP when the level begins, and whichever unit has the highest amount of AP available has its turn to act. When a unit performs little or no actions during its turn, it will recover AP. A unit's AP will also regenerate automatically over the course of the battle's turn phases.

  3. When a battle commences, the game transitions to a horizontal view. Each unit possesses its own specialized repertoire of attacks for short-range or long-range battles. Pressing the A button combined with moving the control stick in one of four directions will perform a unique attack based on that direction. Each attack uses up one of the number of "Branches," the number of attacks that a unit can use during its turn. These attacks will knock the enemy into the air. Akin to how combos work in a fighting game, the player must successfully chain attacks together to gain benefits such as items, additional branches, and extra damage. Once a battle sequence commences, bonuses aside from items are converted into experience points (EXP), which allow the player to reach higher experience levels. These levels enable the player to gain increased stats and acquire additional moves.

  5. Successfully landing attacks builds up the SP gauge. Upon filling up the gauge, the player can press the X button to perform a special attack. Magic Points (MP) can be used to active character-specific skills which provide stat boosts or perform a unique combination attack called a Multiple Assault. Additionally, receiving continual attacks will fill a unit's Stun gauge which, when completely filled, prevents the unit from acting for several turns. When a rival unit attacks, the player has the option of entering the Defense phase. By successfully timing presses of the directional pad, the player will decrease or nullify damage and regain AP. The player can also choose to use both AP and a portion of the SP gauge to evade or directly counter the enemy's attack.
