In some ways the running off mechanic can be annoying but I also vaguely get the impression that that isn't entirely scripted and you can kill them off the first time you encounter them if you do it correctly. I'd be more annoyed if it felt entirely scripted but I'm not sure it is given that there are clearly Metroid arenas that I could have fought something in but never did.
